- Switzerland is famous for a lot of things, but perhaps one of the things it's most famous for is always being neutral in international disputes. So why does Switzerland never take sides, and how did they get their sometimes hostile neighbors to respect their neutrality for over 200 years?

Switzerland was neutral up until yesterday... Sorry y'all.
So my Dad is from Switzerland and I went there with him about 20 years ago just to check the place out.
My Dad use to tell me stories about what it was like growing up and stuff about his side of the family (because my Grandpa and Grandma passed b4 I was born so I never knew them).
Anyways my Grandpa was in the Swiss army and was defending the country versus the Germans(during WW2) from invading. One night my Grandpa was on watch at the boarder (they split shifts watching with 2 guys every 6 hours) and the orders from the higher officer was "Ask in Swiss 'who is there' and if no one replies in Swiss(because they could be German and don't know how to speak Swiss) or they do not say anything at all you shoot". That night my grandpa and his guard mate heard some noise from the bushes on the German side and ask "Who is there!" twice. No one replied so they shot.
Turns out it was the higher officer playing a prank to test the guards and he was shot dead by the guards defending the country.

The Palace of Nations was the HQ of the League of Nations, which Switzerland joined pretty much right away, but when that failed its people weren't so keen in joining the UN (the 2002 referendum was just the one that went that way, the others were for No to the UN). So, the Swiss were probably burned by how quick the League of Nations lasted and so waited several decades before deciding the UN was worth joining, but even so it leased the UN the Palace of Nations during that whole time as their second HQ.

Just A guy yup. They have a great defense location while also being surrounded by some of the most powerful states from France to Holy Roman Empire (later germany) and Austria Hungary. You tend to stay neutral for that reason

we respect Switzerland's neutrality, but people also need to know that it's not always sunshine either. Undeniably, a lot of the prosperity came from turning a blind eye and conducting businesses with the Nazis, other dictatorships (i.e. North Korea), and terrorists. For many corrupt politicians in other countries, Switzerland has been a prime location for money laundering.

but they don't. they only act as a bank. how the owner of the bank account got his/her money was only between the bank and the owner (who does pay a hefty fee for that privacy). How ever that law has been changed under pressure of the EU. Now EU nations can request to get the bank information of a individual if they have a court mandate to do so.
