- I just couldn't wait to test out these really pretty toned papers by Fabriano! I have all four in warm and cool tones;l sand, clay, moss and sea. I ended up doing a bunch of drawings using various supplies; pencils and pastels. I think I will do another video using pens and other supplies, but let me know in the comments what you would most like to see!
Buy Fabriano toned papers:
Australia - The Art Shop: theartshop.com...
The Art Shed: www.artshedonl...
Eckersley's: www.eckersleys...
Overseas: Ok so they to be really hard to find! Surprisingly, Austalian stores seem to be the easiest places to get these paper pads right now, and Moss and Sea must be really new.
Here's a US website which has them all: www.trekell.co...
Let me know if there are other places and I will stick links in :-)

I really like these drawings. The camel and bee are my favorites but the fox is also awesome..😎
Thank you! I need to get these papers out again!
Great job Becky!! I can TOTALLY RELATE to the feeling of pastels against fingers.. I CANNOT STAND IT!! It really freaks me out, so you did really well to push through 👏👏👏👏 I really loved the baby penguin and of course, the BEE (no surprises there 🤣🤣🤣🤣). Well done 🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️
Thank you! I am glad others can identify with tactile issues....ughhh anything chalky just makes me squirm, lol. The oil pastels are slightly less horrible but man they make a mess! 🤣
I really like all the pictures you drew. I'm looking forward to see more of this paper maybe with metallic pencils or metallic Aquarell colors, or with more pencils. I think the caran d'ache will work well with the paper.
Thank you! I definitely want to use more pencils on this paper because they are so fun. 💜
@@BeckyTregear I'm happy to see more videos and more with pencils. I love coloring with pencils
Love the colors on the paper. You really chose some great colors to show them off. I liked your skittle penguin, tell Nick they really are that shape. Thanks for sharing all the pieces love seeing them.
Thank you! It was fun just making pictures as I went along rather than planning anything too complex. Baby penguins do look like fluffy skittles, haha. 🐧
They all great. I like the penguins and the fly has a semi abstract feel to it. I wouldn't mind seeing gouache on these papers. Have a nice day. V.
Thank you.💜
Amazing video!
These papers are gorgeous - I have never seen them before but I really like the look of the Sea and Moss - thank you for sharing with your fab demonstration drawings - thanks for sharing - stay safe✨🌈✨
Thank you - I only recently saw these papers and just had to try them. The blue and green are such unusual colours for toned paper.
I like how your pieces turned out, I'm realizing when trying new products to not expect my work to be my best and just to play with the supplies. I really like the colors of the papers, they remind me of the canson mi teintes papers. Those papers seem a bit too smooth to grip pastel, so need something quite texture like pastel mat or sanded paper to be able to layer well. You could use Spectrofix in between pastel layers to help it grip the paper. I would love to try these paper if I ever found them around my area :)
Ah yes, the Canson is a much rougher texture. I'd just use pastels on that I think. If I use pastels....*twitch*. Not my favourite medium! 😂
Fun experiments! I do love the drawings on the Sand paper, but I also think your other drawings are nice. I actually really like your adult penguin. I'll be curious to see what else you end up doing with these toned papers. See you Friday!
Thank you! Adult pengie turned out well enough....the baby not so much! 🤣 I hope you're well ☺️
Fun stuff. I’d like more different tests including watercolour, gouache etc.
I will test those out, thank you! 😊
So much artwork!! Okay, you’ve officially convinced me to add the Fabriano toned papers to my wishlist. They’re just so gorgeous. I’d really like to use them with my colored pencils (including the derwent drawing hehe). My favorite is also the fox, but the skull comes in second. It’s giving me Halloween vibes and I’m all for it💀 yes please, a derwent drawing pencil review!💜
Oh you'll love the paper with pencils, they're so pretty and the tooth is great! I was thinking of buying the updated tin of Derwent Drawing pencils, but wow have they increased in price! 😱
@@BeckyTregear ah yes they’re expensive! I got them on sale, and I’m glad I did
Thank you for sharing. Great video!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it! 😊
Fab drawings Becky all of them are beautiful, I've got a pad of toned grey which I've never used as I didn't really know how to go about drawing on it but you've inspired me so I'm going to have a go now but with pencils. Would love to see gouche on this paper
Toned paper is so addictive to use once you get the hang on it! Grey is nice for adding on any colour really, and white shows up very well. I hope you have fun with experimentation. Will add gouache to the list 😁
Lovely animals! The fox is so beautiful! Also the skull is so clean ;) and hey, that penguings are not a mess! Pastels are difficult to use :S Thanks for the video, nice papers!
Thank you! 😊
This is gorgeous :)
Thank you lovely! 😃
Great review Becky, you really put the paper to the test with pencil and pastel. I would love you to do pens and maybe ink, someone else mentioned gouache? 🙂 I love the combination of ink and coloured pencil on toned paper and we now know pencil works well thank you!
Thank you! Yes, I need to get pens and ink on the for sure. Not sure how gouache will go, but I will no doubt try that too. 😊
You can use water with the tinted charcoal to somewhat fixate it to the paper. It can help with the layering. Else a workable fixative is helpful. :) Love the whole thing!
I am not sure if I should laugh about your oil pastel struggle. Your suffering fingers did well.
I will have to try the tinted charcoal with water, maybe on some watercolour paper first! I thought you'd get a kick out of the oil pastels, lol.
I loved the drawings and paintings! Congratulations! I didn't know these papers and I loved seeing how these different materials behaved on them. As a suggestion, I would love to see them combined with gouache. 😊
Thank you! I definitely want to try gouache on them. 😊
Great idea about the gouache.. but is the paper thick enough? What is the weight of the paper, do you know? Would it take wet mediums too?
@@artbydrbee Looking at it, I think this paper is going to really buckle under water, but I will no doubt try it anyway.
I love the camel 😊
Thank you, he was a pleasant surprise as I wasn't sure if he would turn out at all, lol.
Alazon sells pastel holders 3/3$ no need to ever touch or pan pastels also use that clear gesso before hand it gives even the cheapest paper a perfect tooth I’ve heard air brush medium could work too
I reaalllyyy like this paper with colored pencils,
I agree, it's amazing with them!
Trying this out as a mid point between the kraft and black paper pads I have
You are way too hard on yourself, Becky! Your drawings are so cute! I love the camel's funny face and the penguins the most. Looking at sulls freek me out. I never drew one myself.
Pastels are frustrating when you are using the wrong paper. Pastelmat is wonderful for layering and grabs the pigments so much better than smooth paper.
And if you don't like touching the pastels I would recommend Pan Pastels. They come with Sofft Tools for blending. You can use Pastel Pencils for details (or even coloured pencils) and don't have to touch a thing.
Regarding the Sennelier oil pastels I found out that I like them better for final layers. I use Caran d'Ache Neopastels first and Sennelier on top. Blending with OMS is a joy and you don't have to touch them. But probably not in this paper. I used Colourfix paper and it worked very well.
Can't wait for your next experiments.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment! Yes I have used coarser pastel paper before and it is a much better surface. I was just curious to see how they'd go. Pan pastels are a lot nicer to work with, haha. I didn't end up using them this time though, silly me. I never learn! 🤣
@@BeckyTregear oh you have Pan Pastels already? I didn't know. I really love them.
@@BeckyTregear I noticed that Art Spectrum offers toned paper pads as well. Do you have this paper? I was wondering how it compares to the Fabriano. It is half the price at the artshop and is 250 gsm.
@@Bonnie10au No, I haven't tried their paper yet. I want to!
@@BeckyTregear thanks so much for replying.
Becky - could you please do an update to this video - how do you feel about these papers now? Do you use the MOSS (green) and SEA (blue) more than the sand or clay colors.. what drawings are you doing with them now (a year later)... SO HELPFUL to know how these papers do not get along with pastel... BUT I use Vine charcoal and pencils for my thumbnail sketches...
I am not planning on buying the SAND or CLAY but still thinking Moss or Sea could be fun
Oh yes, I am very overdue to make another video on these papers! I will try and get this done soon. ❤
@@BeckyTregear thanks
I LOVE the drawing of camel..
Thank you! 😊
I rhought all of your pieces looked good. Very found of the skull-Halloween is right around the corner!
I love Halloween!
Thank you so incredibly much! May I ask, have you used strathmore toned blue mixed media paper? If so, is the strathmore blue or fabriano blue paper darker?
You are way too harsh in your art work too- it all looks amazing!!
I’m so sorry for all the questions! Thank you so incredibly much!
Haha always my own worst critic! I haven't used the Strathmore toned blue but I think from my vague memory of seeing the papers in store, the Fabriano is definitely bluer and a bit darker.
I would paint this paper with clear gesso, let it dry then use the pastel pencils or soft pastels it will make all the sidference
Is Trixie your cat? I have a Trixie cat and she definitely does like to use me as a pin cushion too.
Haha yes, it's funny they have the same name 😸
i do prefer using coloured pencils on this paper, all the brands i have work well on it. def wasnt textured enough for me and pastels. put gloves on if the feeling of the pastels causes you to squirm?
That would be the sensible thing to do! But the problem with gloves is I lose sensitivity for fine details (if that makes sense) and I'm not a big fan of wearing them either. There's no helping me! 😂
I generally get the rainbow pack of pastel matt paper for pieces I know I am going to sell.
That stuff is good too!
I got some toned paper from Rembrandt and used acrylics on them. It says on the packaging it's good for acrylics but it buckled! And I didn't even dilute my acrylic paint. Could you try these paper with acrylic paints?
I can do that....I imagine this paper will buckle too though, but we shall see!
@@BeckyTregear I love the gray color background but so disappointed that it buckled when it advertised it was for acrylics!
Good! I subscribed, i draw too, i hope that my drawings can inspire
keep draw, Did you comment on your favorite drawing by me
Also Sand is Anakin's least favourite paper
Haha! 😆
