I have considered a MAME cabinet for 20 yrs. What you have done gives me inspiration all over again for this Pi I bought last year that's sitting around collecting dust.
very cool build!!! on a side note the hinges you installed on the front door, I work for the company that manufactures them. I even helped with the R&D of the soft close damper that is in them.
+Michael Natrin Thanks Michael! It does feel really nice to have it completed, although there's a part of me that still keeps thinking "there's got to be another little thing to it that I haven't finished yet" even though it's been finished for a few weeks :)
@@Iliketomakestuff - Have you upgraded this setup to an Odroid XU4 yet? Saturn, Dreamcast, Naomi, & Atomiswave support. Great looking setup. I'd love to build one of these.
Bob. I have become hooked on your channel. You have built some of the exact same projects I have around my house, my super secret hidden door/bookshelf goes to an open space under the stairs. I hide all of my network equipment, ESXi host for media server, security, IP Cameras and more. And I just built a table top pi arcade. My next project is to build my daughter bunk beds with a desk and shelves. She's been begging me for bunk beds for a year and I can't come up with good safe plans for it just yet so it's on hold til I can figure that out. I love the videos... Very well put together. Thank you for taking the time to do this!!
+Brian Dixon Thanks! That's awesome to hear! Check out my site, I did a post (no video) about the bunk beds that I made for my boys a few years back. There are some measured drawings that might be helpful or give you an idea.
Dude your my hero. You just made yourself a fucking arcade machine with graphics of your family as superheroes.!! So awesome brother. U da man. I I'm close to where u live I challenge yo to some classic street fighter.!
Bob -- It's been a pleasure to follow this project! My oldest son and I appreciate all the inspiration for great projects and has he gets older this is a project I'm looking forward to doing with both my boys.
It turned out fantastic! I love the fade up of the lights when you walk up. That's a really cool feature. Favorite game that you played once it was done that you had not planed in a long time?
+I Like To Make Stuff I never really played that one. That's what's funny about some of these games...we thought they were great and they really weren't. Some of them are still fantastic. I remember really liking Contra and Pac-Man.
+I Like To Make Stuff Oh, yeah...the 2600 was horrible. ha. We had an Odyssey system before the Atari, and it was really bad. There was one fun racing game though.
You should use a CRT monitor. It might sound weird, but it would be worth it to me to redesign a bezel and everything for a CRT. The games just pop on those monitors, as they are what the games were originally designed to be displayed on.
Would have been awesome if you used a push button on/off switch....then you could have used the old school arcade "insert 25 cent slot-buttons" or whatever you call those things
That moment when you realize you should've took woodshop more seriously after watching a 3 video series on something that would be awesome to build 🤦🏾♂️😅
The arcade machine looks great, ironically I just finished listening to Ready Player One which happens to be all about retro video games! Thanks for the suggestion and the dope video Bob!
Bob, your arcade cabinet is sticking AWESOME!!!!!!! Love what you have done and how much it reminds me of going to the arcade as a kid and playing games. Can't wait to see it in person one day.
unreal video series. I've been listening to the podcasts where you spend a year thinking about this, good to see the build. And the inspiration for my arcade table is growing
Haha...How fitting that the ad before the vid was "The Final Countdown" Geico Ad. Awesome series Bob, thank you and I cant wait to see what you do next
Great project. The only thing I would suggest is following the main power cable to the machine to inside of the cabinet and securing it with a staple. That way if it ever gets pulled or tripped over the connections inside the box won't come loose, the wire will just get disconnected from the wall.
Nice job Bob. I kinda want to build one of these after seeing you build this one. I never thought of connection the LEDs the way you did. I just made a project video where I used LEDs and I just kinda wrapped them around leaving them all together. Since they wouldn't be seen I wasn't too worried about it, but the way you did it was great and I will probably do it that way next time. Another great video in the books!! Two thumbs up
My fiance and I were going to build a table arcade with RetroPie but you've inspired us to build a full-sized arcade with storage! His dad has some really nice professional CAD software so it's been super easy to design our own custom build, maybe we'll share our design with others when we're done :)
Dude... I love this. I wish I had the crafting abilities (and tools) that you have to build one myself. This is by far the best looking arcade cabinet that I've seen yet. (and I've looked at a lot for ideas on how to make my own in the future.)
Haeinscute this is a really sophisticated build, but you could totally pull off something similar if you wanted. The control board is quite easy to wire.
I know this is a few years old and emulation has developed further. With that being said, this setup would be amazing upgraded with a loaded up Asrock A300 w a 2400g and some fast RAM running RetroArch and a modular controller deck for use with multiple systems. These series of vids were amazing. That arcade turned out super sick.
Dude, you and your arcade machine (and all of your other projects) are incredible. Your videos always get me so inspired to make stuff! Thanks so much Bob!
I have recently built my own full size arcade cabinet and was wondering what to do next. Your idea for the Arduino controlled lights with a PIR was a real inspiration for me I have to say! 6 weeks of head scratching and tinkering with Arduino, soldering irons, different types of LED strips and more, I have now got the result I want with PIR activated backlight and marquee. In that time I have learned a bit of C++, how to (properly) solder and just a whole load of fun. Thanks man! I would love to see your code to compare if possible?
I actually had the idea to make something exactly like this the other day. Fast forward to today when I search RUclips to see if someone else had done something similar and you hit it dead on! The only thing I wasn't including in my build idea was the arduino relay sensor (was just going to do a switch). I also wanted to include a spare video out option and wireless game pads in case a few friends decide a game of Mario kart is needed and we want to run a line to a larger display. I will have to check out your build plans to help build even more reference than your video. Excellent job!
I have considered a MAME cabinet for 20 yrs. What you have done gives me inspiration all over again for this Pi I bought last year that's sitting around collecting dust.
Sweet! Go for it!
That sensor is brilliant addition, didn't see that coming. And 2 thumbs up for Excite Bike
+Robin Lewis I was just thinking the same thing! Excite Bike! Such a cool game.
3 years later, came back to watch this after your MK cabinet build. Love that sensor wakeup\sleep feature still!
Never thought of using pencil to hold down wire during soldering...
ARRRRRRAH, I always does that on the table saw!!!!
Great tip!
very cool build!!! on a side note the hinges you installed on the front door, I work for the company that manufactures them. I even helped with the R&D of the soft close damper that is in them.
Cool project Bob, boy does a machine like that bring back some memories. Double thumbs up
I actually loved this series. Shame it's over 😥
+Jamie Drew :) Don't worry, more cool projects coming up!
+I Like To Make Stuff , Good, your subscribers bumped up ... the pressure is on, but don't burn yourself out..awesome work.
+I Like To Make Stuff you should make a rubber band gun! It's perfect!
Showed all three videos to my Tech students. They say this guy and his arcade are "sick!". I agree - great work, Bob!
+Tom VanderHorst I'll take it! Thanks Tom!
IT LOOKS SO GOOD. Great job. Must feel good to finally be finished. I'm sure you and your family will enjoy it for many many years.

Bob! You crushed it! She's a beauty!
The "Hammer Drill" I laughed at that one for a long time!
Thats what it's called?
+James Norman No, he uses a drill as a hammer, and he writes below "not a hammer drill"
We need the Arduino wiring plan!! this is the most part making this build awesome and different!
You should make a arcade claw machine
yes
yea!
that would be cool
No. Make a home claw machine instead. If you make an arcade claw machine it will NEVER let you win.
Nebby how many "get in the bag" jokes have you received

after watching these I'm actually considering doing this
+Jesse Carman do it! It's a really fun and rewarding project!
Ok I will! Thanks man!
Jesse Carman same I want to make it
It's actually not too expensive, especially if you do a design that's a bit more simple
@@SayderCascading What do you define under "not too expensive", $500? $1000? I do like this more complex design with all the storage space.
I can't say I'm a fan of the finish on the cabinet, but I do love the build.
So when is the giveaway? ;) Great job man, wish my hand had more thumbs

Read mate, the internet is your friend
I give you mine!👍👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏼👍🏽👍🏾👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
headphone jack? You can force the Pi to output audio through it
Love the build, you just inspired thousands of people to learn and do something that they normally wouldn't have.

do the blueprints for this project on the website show a better and more detailed explanation of the arduino setup?
Very cool! I can see where the auto on/off would be nice with kids.
I loved this project, it was really cool :)
Probably one of the coolest builds ever!!
You should use a CRT monitor. It might sound weird, but it would be worth it to me to redesign a bezel and everything for a CRT. The games just pop on those monitors, as they are what the games were originally designed to be displayed on.
You could totally do that when you make yours. Personally for me, the storage is more important that using a CRT.
Plus a CRT is super heavy and you may need to think about how you support it properly.
James Rounding
Yeah, I guess I'm just one of those that doesn't like to see great technology (in my opinion) die.
Using a CRT isn't necessary for most emulators. You can get very similar effects by using HLSL and other filtering settings
You're entirely correct. I'm just one of those who would still prefer a CRT over any new display technology.
This is both the best and most practical cabinet I've seen. Great job!
"the hammer drill! not a hammer drill" xD
bob you rock man :D
The lighting kit of this arcade cab is the future off arcade cabinet
What can I say...GREAT !!!
