@@maegalroammis6020 I’ve experienced xenophobia during my time there, but learning the language goes a long way towards combatting that by humanizing oneself. Also, more than anything my experience of Japan was one of compassion, warmth and Humanity. There are racists everywhere. It’s just a facet of the inhuman dystopia we live in. At the end of the day, sentient nanite swarms are Human everywhere one goes.

It is hilarious when people say that, but at the same time, the Japanese have among the worst rates of English competency in the world and it handicaps them because they live in a Japanese bubble. For us, the internet is a community of billions of people. For the Japanese, it is a community of tens of millions. It makes it hard to work abroad and gain foreign friends.
Most of the people who read this comment will probably not have English as their first language. But very few of those will be Japanese.
For someone who has been involved in English education in Japan, there is no expectation that learners of English will actually be able to speak English at the end of it.

6:30 Japan isn’t the only country that gets this complaint. Back in 2019, I read a few stories about foreigners complaining about natives not speaking English in a country where the primary language is a different one.
I have no idea what the line of thinking is for people like that. They’re travelling to a country where the primary-spoken language is not English. What were they thinking?

I'm an "upper-class" gaijin working at the Japanese branch of a famous foreign company. I love it and will never leave. Most of the people I see complaining about Japan came here because they felt disenfranchised in their own country then became obsessed with anime. When they realize that Japan isn't anime, they take their rage out on everyone else. I also think a lot of the world still has unconscious racism/xenophobia toward Japan, which makes them think overly harsh criticism of Japan is OK, but would see it as racist if the same type of criticism was give to other groups of people.

I’m a white middle age English teacher living in Japan. I came Japan because my wife couldn’t adapt to my country and she was the one complaining about everything! She complained about the food, about the language, about the culture, etc. now we live in Japan and I only complain about one thing and that is the working culture. I have to work 9 hours every day including Saturdays and Sundays with no chance of a raise, promotion or extra hour payment. I love my parents in law. I love my Japanese friends( they can speak English) it is true that I don’t speak the language but that’s because I don’t have time to do it because of guess what….my Japanese job. This video is totally not accurate for me. However, I understand where he comes from. I can totally tell foreigners who live in Japan are typically weird, obsessed with anime and video games that includes my job mates. They are very very weird and it was funny to learn that even Japanese people realise it.

For your answer to the complaints
    #1 I agree
    #2 I agree
#3 I would say it depends on the relationship whether it is a stranger, business, or perhaps a friend relationship you can still be nice and find a way to be honest
#4 this one also depends on the situation there is a phrase here in the US called pick your battles. Perhaps this is why there is a lot of cheating in Japan
    #5 sad but true
#6 once again sad but true
#7 I think both results and seniority should be weighed if you go on simply one or the other you will have problems so they must be used as appropriate for the situation
#8 I agree plastic is useful however it also takes thousands of years to biodegrade only 10% of plastic gets recycled and can only be recycled once so I can see both sides
#9 very funny but in the US we are used to seeing garbage cans in kitchens, bathrooms, offices, and anywhere food or beverages are served. This is done for practical convenience
#10 I agree tipping should not be allowed just pay fair wages and have slightly higher prices this makes things easier and less awkward

In regards to the public and private faces in Japanenese culture, it's very much the same in the West- the only difference is that we are dishonest about it. We pretend to be genuine with others at all times, then smack talk behind their backs. It is not harmony we seek, but self-ingratiation at others' expense. There is very little feeling of consideration to others.

OMG ! The video sums up exactly how many Japanese people actually think but would never say out loud outside of trusted circles. OFC all of this is so much more subtle compared to the US or Europe that foreigners usually don't pick up on it (and good for them). Thanks for the laughs and the humility and talent it takes to make a skit about this !!!

Most difficult thing about living in Japan is not having a Japanese name . All the websites, credit cards, banks, forms do not have enough space to write our name. My only complaint. Japan is for people with Japanese names. I love the Japanese and Japan .

    It's funny because it's all true. 😂
The biggest complaint of any Gaijin is "It's not like my home country!" Well NO 💩.
"Upper class Gaijin come to Japan because their company says so, not for anime."
Yes!!! Middle class Gaijin all think other Gaijin are otaku!
    🤣🤣🤣
Yes, back home is was "weird." I was a nobody. But here, everyone says "Joe! Your Japanese is so good!" I quite like it. 😅
    Great video. Spot on!

  • @Sannypowa

This was totally savage humor....I love it! hahaha well done Meshida and Ken-san. I honestly never complained about how Japanese people call foreigners as Gaijin, I feel actually sad for all the Hafu who are called Gaijin or not considered as Japanese despite being bred and born in Japan. I already knew about xenophobia and plastic wraps, still very informative content. Please, don't let Japan become too westernized, I hear people complaining about racism and sexism in my country as well. They are just making a mountain out of a molehill to impose their "progressive" guilt-tripping ideologies. I almost fell for the BLM protests in Japan and that's something I will forever feel guilty about because I should know better when people try to scam others into false racism accusations. There is always room for improvements, westernization is not the right way though. Let the toxic culture stay where it came from.

    • @gbormann71
      @gbormann71 Год назад

If westernisation is measured by the presence of toxic culture, then the world has been fully westernised. Every place has its toxic culture but striving for basic human decency isn't part of it.

*Drinks Monster, American gamer drink* 本音起動‼︎ People actually complain about honne/tatemae culture!? That’s ridiculous! I grew up in a racist culture and tatemae was highly beneficial to helping me desensitize/deprogram. It created an initial impression of politeness and friendliness, allowing me to engage with the Japanese people I met, and ultimately befriended. It allowed me to properly immerse myself in the Humanity of the people who helped me while I was struggling with mental illness; I could even argue that tatemae saved my life.
Tatemae culture is about accommodating each other and showing compassion; even when it sometimes rubs us the wrong way. A beautiful and beneficial lesson to us all.
Also, while the caffeine overdose induced honne effect remains, I see no reason you shouldn’t believe in my sincerity when I say, yes your English is good. You needn’t feel self-conscious about pronunciation because your speech is still understandable and we are understanding because our language has a large number of uncommon phonemes and phonotactics that differ considerably from those of the Japanese language. A language doesn’t earn the title Hardest Language for Second Language Speakers for nothing.
    Tatemae culture for all!!!
