This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band and Marco Hietala, bassist and singer, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). Thanks for your reaction! You are correct... drummer is Jukka Nevalainen and bassist is Marco Hietala who was replaced by Jukka Koskinen from Wintersun. Marco is really great musician and singer by himself. He is one of the godfathers of metal in Finland.
R.I.P Ann Waychoff mother of the Nightwish Army. June 28th, 2020 . Ann was a big Nightwish Fan. And every new person who listened to NW, she went through a little chat. And gave them some info about NW. This was her favorite song. And this song belongs to her. I like very much that Gabriel have continued Ann s work.... so her heritage is still here.

I've seen a lot of your Wintersun reactions and just automatically assumed you have checked out Nightwish before, my bad! It's nice to see you come from Wintersun route to Nightwish, it usually happens other way around. Nightwish is a great band. Kai was their drum technician and jack-of-all-trades helper from 2007-2014 until he replaced their original drummer Jukka Nevalainen. Keyboard player Tuomas Holopainen is the mastermind of the band. Tuomas and Jari (Wintersun) both are great composers and are truly masters of epic metal music.

NW Army Finland here. A very nice reaction! Just Nightwish doing Nightwish things! And as you have surely noticed, although they are all outstanding , none of them standout Well, except our Valkyrie Goddess, ofc. Nightwish is their own genre and no other band comes close to the level they are at. Never, in the history of music entertainment, have a set of skills and talent collided in such powerful manner. Tuomas is a true genius as a composer and with lyrics!
When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’. Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera). 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’. Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’ Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see. Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on RUclips. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered RUclips in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish. Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Originally Floor was sent by Allfather Odhinn to Midgard to gather the souls of fallen warriors to Valhalla, but she got distracted and joined a series of bands. However, Floor still gathers souls by her grace, beauty and the sheer power of her vocals. This song forever reminds us at Ann Carone Diamond Waychoff. Well known as the Mother of the Nightwish Army. She sadly left us at June 28, 2020. It was her favorite song. I am pleased to welcome you to the wonderful world of Nightwish from the UK Oldies Division of Nightwish Army (East Anglian branch). As you delve deeper into their music (as I hope you will) you will find many diverse songs. Symphonic metal is the official genre, but you will find songs ranging from metal to ballads and even a jazz track. I have subscribed to your channel in the hope that you'll keep on watching and listening to Nightwish, especially their live recordings. I saw them live at Wembley in November 2022 and it was the most amazing unforgettable experience. Greetings Gen X from the Silent Generation. In my not so humble opinion, Floor Jansen has the most versatile, powerful and pitch perfect voice in the known universe. My favorite band and singer of all time. 😄🤘
Floor's and Marko's voices were like the Beauty and the Beast. They complemented each other so well. I think Tuomas is not much of a growl fan, he only let Floor loose once ('Yours is an empty hope'), and there were no (harsh) vocals from Jukka on the latest Nightwish album.
This is about as Heavy as Nightwish gets so don't know if it'll be you're cup of tea .....They are the definition of SYMPHONIC METAL and IMHO the best to do it . Floor Jansen the lead singer can do anything vocally from Classical to growling and everything in between......she is next level ......doesn't growl that much with Nightwish did it more with her old band Revamp. .......you should react to " An ocean of strange islands " a new song by them
Perhaps you should try Ghost Love Score at this concert Wacken 2013 as the usual starting point with the current singer ,Floor Jansen, who you just heard. This drummer Jukka Nevalainen chose Kai to replace him as he suffered from severe insomnia at the end of this tour. So from the next album onwards plus live shows it is Kai. The bassist Jukka Koskinen joined in 2021 for latest tour bur so fat doesn't sing. Nightwish rarely has growls and Floor is quite capable if needed. The sixth band member the multi instrumentalist, Troy Donockeley also sings.
Kai replaced his friend Jukka (here) due to insomnia. And Jukka from WS got a member in 2021 oder 2022 because of leaving of Marko (singer and base player).

Until the Breakdown hits you with a 10 ton hammer it is all fun and games. But then the slow chugging monster with the machine gun riffing takes over. And for every Metal Head this lights up the day. This is one of my favorite Nightwish songs. I have a mild case of bruxism, and sometimes I find myself grinding my teeth to the end breakdown. It's not frequent and hasn't damaged me in any way, just how my brain without me noticing expresses my appreciation 😄.

Jukka (Koskinen), who replaced Marko Hietala hasn't sung far within the Nightwish songs so far. But we know he can sing. But we (and he himself) think, that he can't replace Marko in duets with Floor. I don't know how Jukkas solo voice sounds.
Just for clarification, there is no organ - there are three synthesizers set on an art piece and stand. Over the years the stands have changed and usually there are two or three synthesizers. These are used in conjunction with the recorded symphonic and choral music. Since the new bassist, Jukka, has come in I am not aware of him singing at all. However, there is another male vocalist who has a softer voice. You hear him most on the newest album. There won't be live shows yet for this because Floor was pregnant with her second daughter (Lucy) and has been given "mommy time". However, one should note that she recorded the album vocals at her home studio (the band went to her) after she was ready - six weeks after giving birth (crazy soon, but that's Floor).
Just to clarify, the decision by the band to not tour in support of the album had nothing to do with Floor being a new mom. The band announced back in 2023 that they wouldn't be touring for the album for reasons personal to each member of the band. Floor in fact stated multiple times that she was disappointed that the band's would not be touring so I don't think she needed or wanted "mommy time" although I am sure she will make good use of the break to work on her second solo album. as well as spend time with Lucy.
Jukka had to stop drumming after this tour because of severe health problems; he is still with the band but now in management. In 2014/2015 he was replaced by Kai. In 2021 the bassist and second singer Marko Hietala left, also because of health problems. He was replaced by Jukka Koskinen and therefore they now have two members of Wintersun in the band. Nightwish is my favourite band but I also like Wintersun. If you want to see Kai as the new drummer and if you prefer more heavy stuff watch Nightwish "Yours is an empty hope" Wembley 2015; here you even can hear Floor growl (yes, it is her growling, not Marko). To see Kai and Jukka with the band try the concerts starting with 2022 (e.g. Hellfest 2022).

That little sample you gave of Jukka's rough vocals kind of explain why he has not sung in Nightwish, and Troy has picked up the backing vocals. I understand Tuomas is not a big fan of that vocal style, although Floor does harsh vocal growling in some songs like Yours is an empty hope.
I have read comments suggesting that Tuomas is not a fan of growls, but I strongly doubt that. He had a big black metal phase just before starting Nightwish. His history in the Darkwoods My Betrothed. Also he has always been a fan of Amorphis, Children of Bodom and Insomnium.

Glad you are checking out Nightwish and of course the Valkyrie Goddess that is Floor Jansen! ...... After watching I'm not sure this is your cup of tea tho .... First off this is kind of a curious choice for a first NW listen ...... Not a usual choice nor recommendation. Nothing wrong at all, it's a killer performance as always and always one of my favorites, but it's not necessarily the best starting point in my opinion. I may very well be wrong but it seems you are kind of looking at this or perhaps everything, thru a filter of comparing it to symphonic death metal as your musical base line ...... It isn't. Nightwish is greatly more melodic, and does not rely on "Heavyness" and/or "vocal aggression" as a formulaic ingredient to all of their compositions. Now that being said, Floor can death growl with the best of them. Just check out her earlier band After Forever. Its just that now she has come full circle and is the "yoda -Jedi" of vocal ability....... She is not trapped or limited by genre. Her instrument is so highly developed she is able to just express herself in ANY way or style she wants without regard to limits. NW music being the brainchild of the keyboard player Tuomas is DEEP, and never about any one thing or goal other than to convey emotion and the story. If it needs to be heavy, trust us, ..... it WILL BE. But it might also be delicate and subtle, or theatrical and bold, sad, or epic ...... Their music is completely unpredictable, yet you listen in complete confidence that every note will land on its feet so to speak.
Nice reaction! I like that you started with this song, which is very atypical. It’s a wonderful song, but doesn’t really show off the musical ability of the band, aside from maybe clever writing. Would love to see you do more live Nightwish, I think you’ll get a much different experience than with this one.

Jukkis brings something new to Nightwish both in terms of his bass playing but also his very laid back persona and stage presence. He isn’t doing any vocal work though which I think is fair enough as Marko is irreplaceable on that front.

Hello April, even as a big Nightwish fan I was surprised that Finnvox Studio in Helsinki is mixing, recording and mastering Nightwish as well as my second favorite band. Thanks for your reaction! You are correct... drummer is Jukka Nevalainen and bassist is Marco Hietala who was replaced by Jukka Koskinen from Wintersun. Marco is really great musician and singer by himself. He is one of the godfathers of metal in Finland.

I've seen a lot of your Wintersun reactions and just automatically assumed you have checked out Nightwish before, my bad! It's nice to see you come from Wintersun route to Nightwish, it usually happens other way around. Nightwish is a great band. Kai was their drum technician and jack-of-all-trades helper from 2007-2014 until he replaced their original drummer Jukka Nevalainen. Keyboard player Tuomas Holopainen is the mastermind of the band. Tuomas and Jari (Wintersun) both are great composers and are truly masters of epic metal music.

The drummer here is Jukka Nevalainen. The original drummer who had to step down due to health issues. He is still working with Nightwish though

have a set of skills and talent collided in such powerful manner. Tuomas is a true genius as a composer and with lyrics!
When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on RUclips. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered RUclips in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.

I think Tuomas is not much of a growl fan, he only let Floor loose once ('Yours is an empty hope'), and there were no (harsh) vocals from Jukka on the latest Nightwish album.

Floor Jansen the lead singer can do anything vocally from Classical to growling and everything in between......she is next level ......doesn't growl that much with Nightwish did it more with her old band Revamp. .......you should react to " An ocean of strange islands " a new song by them

Jukka is the drummer on the first seven albums, all the good ones.
Perhaps you should try Ghost Love Score at this concert Wacken 2013 as the usual starting point with the current singer ,Floor Jansen, who you just heard. This drummer Jukka Nevalainen chose Kai to replace him as he suffered from severe insomnia at the end of this tour. So from the next album onwards plus live shows it is Kai. The bassist Jukka Koskinen joined in 2021 for latest tour bur so fat doesn't sing. Nightwish rarely has growls and Floor is quite capable if needed. The sixth band member the multi instrumentalist, Troy Donockeley also sings.

This is one of my favorite Nightwish songs. I have a mild case of bruxism, and sometimes I find myself grinding my teeth to the end breakdown. It's not frequent and hasn't damaged me in any way, just how my brain without me noticing expresses my appreciation 😄.

Jukka (Koskinen), who replaced Marko Hietala hasn't sung far within the Nightwish songs so far. But we know he can sing. But we (and he himself) think, that he can't replace Marko in duets with Floor. I don't know how Jukkas solo voice sounds.
Just for clarification, there is no organ - there are three synthesizers set on an art piece and stand. Over the years the stands have changed and usually there are two or three synthesizers. These are used in conjunction with the recorded symphonic and choral music. Since the new bassist, Jukka, has come in I am not aware of him singing at all. However, there is another male vocalist who has a softer voice. You hear him most on the newest album. There won't be live shows yet for this because Floor was pregnant with her second daughter (Lucy) and has been given "mommy time". However, one should note that she recorded the album vocals at her home studio (the band went to her) after she was ready - six weeks after giving birth (crazy soon, but that's Floor).
Just to clarify, the decision by the band to not tour in support of the album had nothing to do with Floor being a new mom. The band announced back in 2023 that they wouldn't be touring for the album for reasons personal to each member of the band. Floor in fact stated multiple times that she was disappointed that the band's would not be touring so I don't think she needed or wanted "mommy time" although I am sure she will make good use of the break to work on her second solo album. as well as spend time with Lucy.
@rnowak85 - within a few weeks of Lucy's birth Floor was back on stage in Amsterdam with her solo show.

Jukka had to stop drumming after this tour because of severe health problems; he is still with the band but now in management. In 2014/2015 he was replaced by Kai. In 2021 the bassist and second singer Marko Hietala left, also because of health problems. He was replaced by Jukka Koskinen and therefore they now have two members of Wintersun in the band. Nightwish is my favourite band but I also like Wintersun. If you want to see Kai as the new drummer and if you prefer more heavy stuff watch Nightwish "Yours is an empty hope" Wembley 2015; here you even can hear Floor growl (yes, it is her growling, not Marko). To see Kai and Jukka with the band try the concerts starting with 2022 (e.g. Hellfest 2022).

That little sample you gave of Jukka's rough vocals kind of explain why he has not sung in Nightwish, and Troy has picked up the backing vocals. I understand Tuomas is not a big fan of that vocal style, although Floor does harsh vocal growling in some songs like Yours is an empty hope.

I have read comments suggesting that Tuomas is not a fan of growls, but I strongly doubt that. He had a big black metal phase just before starting Nightwish. His history in the Darkwoods My Betrothed. Also he has always been a fan of Amorphis, Children of Bodom and Insomnium.

Glad you are checking out Nightwish and of course the Valkyrie Goddess that is Floor Jansen! ...... After watching I'm not sure this is your cup of tea tho .... First off this is kind of a curious choice for a first NW listen ...... Not a usual choice nor recommendation. Nothing wrong at all, it's a killer performance as always and always one of my favorites, but it's not necessarily the best starting point in my opinion. I may very well be wrong but it seems you are kind of looking at this or perhaps everything, thru a filter of comparing it to symphonic death metal as your musical base line ...... It isn't. Nightwish is greatly more melodic, and does not rely on "Heavyness" and/or "vocal aggression" as a formulaic ingredient to all of their compositions. Now that being said, Floor can death growl with the best of them. Just check out her earlier band After Forever. Its just that now she has come full circle and is the "yoda -Jedi" of vocal ability....... She is not trapped or limited by genre. Her instrument is so highly developed she is able to just express herself in ANY way or style she wants without regard to limits. NW music being the brainchild of the keyboard player Tuomas is DEEP, and never about any one thing or goal other than to convey emotion and the story. If it needs to be heavy, trust us, ..... it WILL BE. But it might also be delicate and subtle, or theatrical and bold, sad, or epic ...... Their music is completely unpredictable, yet you listen in complete confidence that every note will land on its feet so to speak.
Nice reaction! I like that you started with this song, which is very atypical. It’s a wonderful song, but doesn’t really show off the musical ability of the band, aside from maybe clever writing. Would love to see you do more live Nightwish, I think you’ll get a much different experience than with this one.

Jukkis brings something new to Nightwish both in terms of his bass playing but also his very laid back persona and stage presence. He isn’t doing any vocal work though which I think is fair enough as Marko is irreplaceable on that front.

Hello April, even as a big Nightwish fan I was surprised that Finnvox Studio in Helsinki is mixing, recording and mastering Nightwish as well as my second favorite band.
