I want to encourage those who are hesitant about using special items. My grandmother passed away last month. She had a set of antique colored pyrex bowls that she used all the time. She said she has memories of her grandmother using the largest yellow one to make biscuits. When I was little we would make tuna salad in the medium sized green bowl. When I would take my boys over to see her she would make cookies with them in that same green bowl. Several months before she passed she gave the bowls to me. I have used that green bowl almost every day since I got it. The large yellow bowl sits on my counter and holds the fruit. I know that there is a chance that they might break, but the joy I get from seeing them every day is worth risk. I want my boys to use them with me and talk about her. She would want us to use them and think about our happy memories together. Use the items that bring you joy; you won’t regret it. ❤

I took photos of things I have gotten rid of this past year and I tried to remember each item the other day. I could remember categories but very little of the specific items. That was very telling to me. I don't regret the hundreds of items out of my home.

My kids are grown, in their 30’s. Only one owns his own place. I have saved their school projects and trophies, bedroom decor, and books, games to hand down.
They want NONE for it. I’m saving it for me. I have to let it go! I will get a memory box for special projects they made just for me, and save those, but the rest has got to go. I look around at my house and know they don’t want this.
There are paintings my great grandmother made, my daughter wants those, but maybe an antique here or there but that is it.
They have their own style, which they should.
Problem where I started saving is my mom got rid of my childhood things, I didn’t have a choice to say yes, I’d like that, or no I don’t. I’m an only child, a child of divorce, I’ll get everything. My mom is a minimalist, so she gives it to me and tells me, this is from your aunt from Germany, or cousin. She gives me the guilt trip so I keep it. I have no place for the things.
I’ve downsized into a 900 sq ft house, no attic, a basement which is full. I have to be strong and declutter. Thank you, you help a lot. 😊
Sorry this got long winded 😂

I think my goals are making things more manageable, simple, easy to deal with, better flow with all the tasks I’ll need to do, feeling better in my home space…and creating the dynamic that serves me rather than me serving all my things. (Not to have things fit in all the spaces lol). Although I do use the boundary concept to keep some things in check.
For my cute and special dandies, I have a curio and they all stay there and I look at them every single day and use some of them from time to time. I used to be really bad about trying not to mess up “the good stuff.” Lol. (Or not let the cats ruin them or break them lol). I also think that it’s good to learn to not cry over stuff too much. Sometimes taking chances and having a loss or disappointment or two really does help us stop going around fearing some future loss. Frees us from that prison of fear about losing things or things getting ruined or broken. After all, the stuff doesn’t cry over us ya know Bcuz it’s just inanimate objects that have no feelings or souls. But just my opinion.
Some things really are very special, but a whole slew of things seem to just be more like sacred cows and why are we “worshipping” them? Well I hope that wasn’t too harsh…but if everything is special, then nothing is special. And many things do not need such veneration from us. It reminds me of the concept of how the Sabbath was made to serve us. We were not made to serve the Sabbath. Something like that.

      Well said
Our modern world measures success in materialistic terms
Not in quality of the person and how they can be of help to others
Where real joy and contentment live
      Remembering the wife of Lot…

    • @goodenoughgirl8102
      @goodenoughgirl8102 Год назад +1

@@lesliecarlson9984 Thanks! I agree. I def don’t want to become a pillar of salt either. Lol. It does suck when we have no choice and we have losses. Huge ones. But it also taught me a few things as well about how to not let it do me in or send me into some forever dark emotional place. How things are so temporal and really are the easiest things to recoup. The more important things are a lot harder to ever restore. It felt like I lost my potential for success when I lost all of my little “trophies” I kept around as “proof” of not being a loser. Other things also but still I can do well eh? Even if I don’t have any trophies left to speak of. Those things were just a reminder. Not the reason I can do things or make it somewhere. So I had to let go of a lot of basing my worth on achievement alone. Among other things I had to work through.
Or I guess one could recall the story of the Children of Israel when they bemoaned losing “the onions of Egypt” in their wandering desert hunger. Or their chagrin about daily manna that would never keep beyond the day it rained down. But really tho? You’d rather have onions than your freedom? And yet it seems to be very easy for any human to start thinking that way. I wouldn’t say get rid of all the precious things at all. But when is it really more of a hindrance than a help to us tho? As The minimalists have said…love people (and animals and living things) and use things. Not the other way around. But you said it tho. What is really “greener pastures?” I highly doubt it’s what a lot of folks really think it is. There can still be some grieving over some losses we have, but if we stay in that place forever and never let it go, we will be just like her. A pillar of salt (esp in the case of being so attached to things that were toxic or not even good for us or not serving us).

Brilliant, thank you for sharing!!! ❤️ My takeaways from this video…
    Decluttering things to remember:
    - You won’t declutter perfectly, however the reward/payoff is well worth the small, temporary regret you may feel. You need the space more than you need the stuff!!
    - The just in case scenario: There will be a way around finding what you need, without owning 3 crockpots (for instance). You will be surprised at how resourceful you can be. Don’t save things just in case because if there is a just in case you’ll find a way to make it work.
    - Sentimental items: Use now! Don’t pack away treasured items for safe keeping, your family won’t know it’s special. Use it now and enjoy!
    - What your clutter threshold is: Do you want your home to be packed full? Or do you want to enjoy the space that you have? If you make things empty and keep them that way you have space to move around and breathe. When you only keep what you need, life is better.
    - You don’t need backups. You don’t need so many “options”. You might want to keep your favorites. However, random extra clutter isn’t serving you. Two is an option!
    - Don’t look at your home as a project. Just do one area at a time. Bite sized categories will help you make the most progress

I have one crockpot and an electric pressure cooker that has a slow cooker option on it. Since it’s just my husband and myself now, we don’t need a lot of appliances so when our stove finally calls it quits we are going to get rid of it and use the small appliances we have instead of paying for a new stove. I need more countertop space instead.
