That's why Snape portrayed the werewolf as a dangerous beast during the DADA class he covered - he needed to scare Harry into staying away, to keep safe. That's why Snape threw himself in front of the children to protect them from Remus, the werewolf. That's why Snape allowed Harry to compete in the TriWizard Tournament - at least if the events were supervised by neighbouring schools, Harry might be better protected from Voldemort. That's why Snape taught Harry Occlumency in fifth year. And I'm damn sure there's a reason Harry "stumbled" across Snape's potions book in sixth year. You're telling me Snape had left Hogwarts twenty years ago and his book was _still_ left there "by mistake", never to be discovered and used by _any_ student, only to be found "accidentally" by Harry Potter, the Chosen One?! If Harry was to defeat Voldemort and become an Auror, he'd need to improve in Potions. Snape knew this. It's also why Snape sent his Patronus to aid Harry on the night the boy found the Sword of Gryffindor during what should have been Harry's seventh year . Snape had known where the real Sword had been hidden. He had been the one to plant the fake in Lestrange's vault. And when the time came, and Dumbledore used Snape as a pawn to derail the path of the Elder Wand to confuse and delay Voldemort, Snape went willingly. He made the Unbreakable Vow to protect Draco, but in doing so he also solidified his fate - Snape knew then that he too would be killed by Voldemort's hand - for the Dark Lord was convinced the owner of the Elder Wand had to be killed in order for its allegiance to change. This was not so, but Snape still agreed to go with the plan, as it was Harry's best chance to have enough time to destroy the final Horcruxes. Snape never felt the pleasure of avenging Lily's death, but he knew Harry would, and Harry would ensure that no one would ever be killed or made to suffer in this way again. Once Harry won, peace would return to the wizarding world. Snape could finally rest in peace, perhaps reuniting with Lily - maybe after all he had done for Harry, she might at least forgive his wrongdoings. They might at least be civil in the afterlife. My hope is that Lily, upon seeing Snape appear in the afterlife, threw her arms around him and burst into tears. "Thank you, Severus - I'm so sorry..." But he didn`t betray his own people, Hogwarts. He betrayed Lord Voldemort and his cruel henchmen by showing Harry the right path as it has been foreseen all the time. He didn`t kill Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore because of his evil nature. He killed him to earn Voldemorts trust and to deceive him. All of it was part of Dumbledores plan.
