Most people buy a golf or a fiesta as their first car, but Rutger really wanted something special and fun to drive. And boy did he find that special gem. A Volvo 244 GL from 1977. He especially wanted it in a rare color, in order to make the lines and shapes really pop.
So sit back, relax and learn more about Rutger and his swedish classic.
Huge thanks to Rutger Hamel (@rutger98h) for taking the time to create this story with us.

Reminds me when I almost drifted my fathers 1982 Volvo 240 into my neighbour's 50s Chrysler. Good memories. Beautiful car.

That primitive feel of the road that is no inhibited by traction control or abs is also why I fell in love with my 240! Volvo for life

Great stuff, reminds me of the early petrolicious videos. I grew up in a 91 240 sedan and it was fantastic! It’s good to see these cars getting more recognition as classics and being looked after. Keep up the videos 👍

great video brings back many memories when was your age i bought my 1st Volvo a 1978 242 GT with B21F and the same 4speed with O/D like you say unique a blast to drive and handle very well and in the winter the heaters in them are like a wood stove which is awesome in our Canadian winters, and am now on my 5th 240 now a 1989 240 DL 4DR with about 350k and still getting an average of 9.5-9.7 litres/100 and have almost driven almost a total of 1.7 million kilometres in total all the cars combined since i bought the 1978 242 GT just a little over 40 yrs ago 👍

    My first car was a Volvo 142-S w/B-20 4-speed.
I drifted in the early eighties before it was coined ! Telepathic feel is right on !

Very recognizable story, bought a 240 1991 as a first car. Amazing car, never let me down. Bought it with "just" 290.000km. Your Volvo looks amazing with the round headlights and its unique steering wheel! Good luck with it, and never sell it!

      Thanks, Bart
We'll let Rutger know. But I think he loves it too much to even think about selling it.
      Cheers!

Congratulations! It’s not just a lovely car, but you’re not keeping it locked up in some garage and you’re actually using it as a daily. Kind of crazy nowadays but so am I!

My dad bought a 164E and then a 244DL. I loved both of them immensely, especially the former. Question: what is the difference between a 244DL and and 244GL as yours?

    • @rutgerhamel9461

DL is the deluxe model (base) and GL the Grand Lux with a higher level of trim

the 240 is an icon and d design and quality masterpiece, the best of all that is that car is fun and reassuring to drive in any road condition .I believe that the teams that designed the following ones have lost the soul of these old bricks.

Do they use a lot of salt on swiss roads? If they do I would rinse the car after using it during winter. These car are not protected as the Volvos after 1988 when they started galvanizing. The reason it has survived that good is spelled Morocco... Btw, with 100 kg of sandbags in the trunk you'll get more traction! Volvo owner since 1992: 244 -75, 242 -76, 244GLT -79, 960 -96, 850-97.

Can confirm car was thoroughly washed after the shoot. The electrical problem including the light that went out were also fixed the day after the shoot. The car lives in a garage and is wel looked after :) -The owner

This is a magnificent car. My parent had a Volvo 144 GLE very similar to this one. Beautiful landscape and filming but the music is deafening and it kinds of ruin the film.

Your description is wrong. That is not a '72 244 GL that Rutger is driving.

They are great as long as you don’t stop going up a hill. Then you just need a few friends to sit in the trunk and you’re good to go again
