I’m a classic liberal (think American Founders) with conservative social values and libertarian economic values. A longtime student of history, esp of Western Civilization, I find the corruption in Ukraine and Russia appalling, though many Western countries are holding their own in this regard these days. America First is a view I share. However, defending innocent civilians is another. For decades have I dreamed of a world where it’s not tolerated… by enough nations to serve as a deterrent.
The justification he gave is the reason for my opposition to Russia’s cause, too. If the United States were to target innocent civilians? Shit. Some things are supposed to be simple. This is one. I was a kid once. I had a good upbringing in relative peace and security and, though I didn’t understand while young, it was never free. Well, people speak of human rights. LIFE, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? The order of these is no accident.
I’m immensely grateful for the costs endured by those who have fought against tyranny and evil, in the past and today. My respect for you both is off the chart, mate. 🇺🇸🍻🇦🇺
Thanks for sharing. What I would love is peace. “Can’t we all just get along?” Thousands of years say no, but attacking children is horse shit in any century. 🙏🏻🫵🏻

Just for reference for those civilian folks who don't know, when Josh talks about the "ccp" he's talking about the casualty collection point, which is where units establish their initial medical field centers to treat wounded before moving them further to the rear. I figure that was pretty obvious to most, but just in case someone was confused, I thought I'd help out. Have a nice day.

He brags a little too much about how they are better than the Russians, especially because he fought in the Kharkiv Oblast, where they fought against a smaller pro-Russian army, which consisted of the local population, who wanted to help the Russians re-establish democracy in Ukraine and remove the fascist regime, which mercilessly liquidates Russian-speaking civilians. Officially in Ukraine, if you don't support the fascist regime, you can be imprisoned for 15 years, but when they took power in the Kharkiv region, they even filmed themselves slaughtering the local population, and those who fled from them to Russia say that Americans and other foreigners also supported the fascist genocide against the Russian-speaking population.

This guy is so sad to see. I think it's safe to say that this guy was broken in either Iraq or Afghanistan and is unable to assimilate back into society in a functional way so he's on the war path, wherever that war is. If he weren't in Ukraine, he'd be "freedom fighting" somewhere else. I've several friends like this, and coming back from intense combat where they experience unimaginable terrors, they really are like junkies trying to recover. Getting these guys the help they need should be the primary responsibility of the DOD, instead they're being encouraged to serve as mercenaries in these proxy wars doing the foreign policy bidding of the US, with none of the benefits or commitments. I see a lot of people talking about the moral ambiguity of this war;however I dont see that.
Ukraine is a sovereign country. Russia invaded and then annexed its cities. Russia has razed cities, bombed civilian targets, and is arguably engaged in a genocide.
Ukraine is not a perfect country and their tactics are questionable. I would argue a lot of the issues (corruption, indiscriminate waste of life) are relics of the USSR. Ukraine is in transition and is working towards learning western value and culture.

I'm an Australian Vietnam veteran and, from my observations, most wars tend to be thrown by people who expect to make a lot of money out of it, but we're the ones put in harm's way.
The vast majority of people everywhere would rather get on with each other. However, there are a relatively few people who massively profit from us not getting on and they're the ones running things. We're just the disposable cannon fodder.
BTW, every nation has its cultural narrative, its own story of who we are and what we stand for, and, without exception, they are fabrications. Ours assures us we have democracy, government of the people, by the people, for the people, but you'd have to be blind, deaf and dumb to not notice the massive corporate influence on our govt. What we have is govt of the people, by and for the corporations. It shouldn't be hard to work out which corporations are enriched by war, those weapons aren't going to sell themselves.
Beware of our own regimes' propaganda, particularly any encouraging us to war.

I’m Indifferent towards a lot of these former American soldiers, and marines that participate in the fighting. This guy reminds me of a few infantry soldiers I was around. My background is not infantry, but as tanker (19K). Many of these guys need quality NCOs and officers to guide them. I notice only a few can actually articulate why they are there, but I get feeling many are there for the glory. Obviously people are going to do whatever they want . I will never celebrate these individuals, but I’m old school in my stance, your either a soldier serving your country or not.

I've seen some people pushing this theory but essentially, an all-volunteet force attracts a certain kind of individual as the enlisted. It's hard to explain, but imagine for the first 18 years of most people's in a modestly modern state, you go through life being told what to do and have a regimented life: wake up time, school time, meal times, class periods, recess time, lunch time at school. All of the sudden, whrn you are 18, you are told "aight, you're an adult, now go figure it out". Some go to college, go crazy, sleep with lots of people, then finding out something they want to do, do their best at adulting, etc ... Some find being in the army and again, being told what to do and when they sleep or eat, well, comforting and that's who end up in an all-volunteer army.
That's one of the reason why I do think a conscript army is good for a republic. It pulls diverse people into the army and not having an isolated caste of military men. Singapore has a conscript army and some of their reservists thought about going to Ukraine and the Singapore state said, without any ambiguity: they have been trained by the Singapore state for Singapore state's defence and their skills belong to the state. It is not to be thrown away for foreigners.

Some of us are asking why we had to have an adversarial relationship with Russia. The absolutely hysterical response to Russia since 2016 isn't good for anyone and much of it is not rooted in fact. Russia is also far more resilient than people are giving them credit for. They haven't really ever fought a multi-year war where the first year wasn't a comedy of errors. They appear to be getting things together. I don't think this bleeding of Russia will end the way people think and we're just forcing new alliances between countries who are tired of being bullied by the handful of countries that run everything. Russia would make a far better ally than an enemy in the future. Even if it's an uneasy relationship. But that ship sailed. Nothing will ever be the same. At least not in our lifetimes. And if they really want to ratchet up the pain look for them to all but stop exports of fertilizers, etc to their new enemies.

Go to history..Russia made a lot of catastrophic mistakes during the beginning of Barbarossa ...so history is repeating again, they learned improved and defeated...only such big countries can turn the tables under such circumstances....

On the topic, i think it's very creepy how easy it is become the enemy you loathe. The "free world" immediately banned russian media, restricted the movement of people (no flights to/from Russia) and goods. Including sanctions on private citizens, some of them who aren't even russian, but British, french and so on.
Not to mention freezing the assets of the Russian State. That wasn't even done against Nazi Germany, and no matter how bad anyone thinks of Putin's Russia, they are nowhere near Hitlers Germany.
And then there's Ukraine. When it comes to democracy and stuff like that it's even worse than Russia. The media isn't free, they are banned if they do something wrong, and political parties are banned if the president doesn't like them.
And since 2014 you also have Azov, the right wing and others threatening, torturing and murdering citizens as well as politicians that they feel arent patriotic enough...
And they call this "protecting the Ukrainian democracy".

Why do we have to have an adversarial response to Russia. Where have you been living under a rock? Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 for no reason other than to subjugate the country to Russia. Putler’s talk of protecting Russians in the Donbas was complete lies. Russia has invaded most of its neighbours since Putler took power. Russia has to be stopped and forced to be a good neighbour in the world.😒

Russia is fashist state. That I can say to you as russian for sure. Civil live is modern and all that, but people has no power here (not like no one tried to change our country peacefully, those military fashist and nationalist fuckers don't give a shit). I can't see how you will "peacefully" negotiate something with those who in power in Russia. It just can't happen. So wait for another revolution or something, lol. I don't even see something else for sollution to this problem, as I hate this (because country will fall appart and millions will die).

The absolutely hysterical fear of Russia dates back way earlier than 2016. The west, and America in particular, has been manufacturing hysteria since May 8th 1945. We created a boogeyman for a variety of reasons…some rational…but mostly irrational and it’s become a self fulfilling prophecy after 80 years trying to keep out boot on their neck. Its a sad reality that primed a powder keg which has now ignited. Hopefully when this war is over the politicians and governments of the world will reconsider the use of nationalist fear mongering as a political tool.

Willy, it is not a sixth or seventh of the US defense budget going to Ukraine. It is *** 5.6 % *** !!!!!!!!! That is about four times less than what you said. America is risking bugger all on this war and it is bloody shameful. We promised to stand by them in Budapest - we should be giving them a shitload. We are giving them small amounts out of our surplus. No one has the right to talk about our Ukraine policy as if it is harming our stores in any way. With respect, sir, but you over-estimate our "generosity". I am utterly appalled at how little this government is giving to Ukraine. Thanks for letting me rant. And thanks for these terrific interviews.
