I was in NOLA last October and I've found that the people there were some of the nicest people around and the food was beyond amazing. For those planning to go, my piece of advice is to explore outside the French Quarter. Go find local dives for just as amazing food without the tourist trap prices.
Another local here. Avoid the French quarter as a tourist. The real culture and food is there but you’ll really find something memorable other places. Plz avoid Bourbon st lol
The savory version you made is very similar to something we make down the bayou called a pistolette. It's basically the fried dough in more of a roll shape, and it's filled like a donut afterwards with crab and cheese or a thick crawfish etouffee filling. So good.
This was a godsend, because I’m 24 hours away from going to NOLA for the first time. Obviously I’ve heard of Cafe du Monde, but after watching this I am demanding that we go to Loretta’s…love supporting Black businesses, and that crab beignet looked bussing. Thanks Josh!
I just learned the hard way back in October that if you sit at Cafe Du Monde and get table service, you get fresh beinets, which are a different beast than the walk-up window ones (highly disappointing).
Ever since I saw the movie 'Chef', I have always wanted to go to Cafe du Monde (irrespective of how they taste), and now Loretta's is also now on my list.. I still haven't gone there, some day for sure, but I now have a good beignet thanks to you! 🖤🖤
cafe beignet down the street from du monde is better, plus they have alcohol, other food besides beignets and sometimes live music. oh and its inside seating so if the weather isnt nice its good to go inside
My first experience at Cafe du Monde….the wait lines for these was .insane. and it was so HhhhAhT outside They were kinda worth it but the powdered sugar was EVERYWHERE! If you breathed mid-bite, your esophagus would be filled with grit and laughing about it made it harder to breathe 💀
As someone who lived in NoLa, the line is a tourist trap. There is no MD to seat you. You just sit at any empty table (even if its still dirty) and they clean it and serve you. The line are all tourist waiting to be seated until they see a native just walk by and sit.
Oh yum! The last time we went to New Orleans was a few years ago (pre-pandemic) and we discovered Loretta's! Since we didn't want to wait in line forever at Cafe du Monde, we started wandering and found Loretta's! I loved the beignets, but wow - the praline candy's won my heart! We bought some to eat on the way home, and some to take home, and - they didn't make it that far! Thanks for the memories - and the recipes! A fresh, hot beignets is the perfect starter for weekend! I just hope I can find the thing you said softens the dough here in Italy!
OMG I didn't know Ms. Loretta passed! I loved meeting her when I visited NOLA. Props Josh for visiting and allowing her daughter to showcase her mom's legacy.
7:17 Ik it's probably sacrilegious, but when my dad and I used to make beignets, we just got a large ziploc bag with powdered sugar and shook them around in it for a bit.
Cafe beignet’s beignets we’re delicious when I last went. Hot, fluffy, light. I went to cafe du monde also and was disappointed. They were a lot denser than what I was expecting. Also cafe beignet has an iced mocha that is amazing
As someone born and raised in New Orleans I'm always kind of skeptical of ppl when they try to talk about our food but your beignets legitimately look delicious and I'm happy to see your love for the city and our culture
My favorite thing about Louisiana food is how easy it is to make and it’s usually pretty cheap I’ve lived here for years now and will never get tired of the food
Used to give culinary bike tours here in New Orleans before the pandemic. Born & raised here. We were free to change up the restaurants however we liked, but Loretta's was my most frequent stop. The food was always amazing, her beignets the apex form of the dish, and the woman herself one of the kindest, warmest, most genuine people it was pleasure to interact with.on a daily basis. I'm glad the family is carrying on the tradition. Miss Loretta will be sorely missed.
Looks like NOLA borrowed some Spanish sopapilla desserts, shrunk them down, though put on It's own unique praline flavoring. Good job on adapting Spanish cooking
Im from New Orleans. Beignet's are delicious, but PLEASE do not wait in those long lines during peak season at Cafe Du Monde. There are other locations that sell just as good beignets. Also, R.I.P to Ms. Loretta, she passed away only a month ago.
I'm so homesick! CDM's beignets are definitely one of those things that 'used to be better', so I'm not surprised you were a bit underwhelmed. The savory crab beignet looks freaking amazing. At Jazz Fest and some places around town, you can get crawfish beignets that are banging.
Destiny, your comment here was worth me reading through all of the others!! I never knew about this beignet festival… Ill lookup which week it’s held and start my diet today!!
Beignets are spectacular and I cannot understand why they're so hard to find in the midwest. They remind me of Greek lukumades but even better. In fact I love to drizzle honey on them for a similar flavor.
I remember my first time in NOLA we were exploring around the French Quarter, and the last stop was at Cafe Du Monde. That beignet was really good, though it was really powdered down with sugar.
I went to NOLA on my honeymoon back in 2016 and we stayed at the Place de Armes in the French Quarter. WHAT a great time. My goodness, the food was just the best I've ever had. I ate gumbo twice a day. And yes of course, we went to Cafe Du Monde.
Just had a conversation last week with some friends at work about beignets. Your "party on wall Street in the bathroom" comment was really close to mine about the powdered sugar everywhere. Enjoyed the savory spin you put on them, too.
We have a place in town that makes some delicious beignets and I’ve been stuffing my scrambled eggs/omelets in them since I was a kid. Everyone looks at you like a monster but it’s amazing
I am just a the start of the video, but i wanna say, that i love the aspect of seeing american food culture together with a bit of where it comes from etc. as an european person. The first thing that i usually connect with american food is Burgers and overall unhealthy fast food, and i love the introduction of special foods and places in america, even tho i will never probably be able to come and eat them myself. So thank you for that!
Just went to New Orleans for spring breaking got the same order, beneits and caffe au lait. No joke did exactly what josh did and burned the f*k out my mouth first sip, that coffee is brewed in the earth's mantle.
I am visiting NOLA now and as this video was posted the day before I left I took it as a sign I needed to go to Lorettas. Best beignets I've ever had (aside from homemade of course) I highly recommend a visit to Lorettas, heaven on a plate.
For those of y'all who are like me and are too broke or too lazy to make these from scratch, I've found that Pillsbury biscuit dough makes a lovely substitute. 👌🏽
Just an idea: Polish Pączki (donuts). They are absolutely delicious. Don't be fooled by the imitation ones filled with lemon curd either. They are traditionally made with prune jam and topped a light sugar glaze. They may not sound like all that and a bag o' chips, but they really are special. Na zdrowie!
Last time I was in NOLA was for Jazz Fest ... pre-kids but with my (now late) husband, so some time mid-1990s. If you love music, it is the place to go for (almost) everything (not just jazz)! The locals are the nicest people in the world! My husband & I had planned to go back in 2020 & then 2021, but, well, you know...
Absolutely loved the bit at Loretta's. Hope you get to visit more places like this, do an interview with the owners and then do your own recipe inspired by what you've seen and learned. "But Different"?
When it comes to beignets, Belgium has this beautiful, crispy on the outside, soft inside, that is only served at fairs and town fetivals called a "croustillon". The recipe seems rather easy, and if you ever want to try, please do, these are just great. I've been obsessed with those since I moved to Belgium seven years ago, and I just can't have enough of them!! T^T
As a European I didn't know about this kind of beignets, we have different things we call beignets here. These look so good! I've never been to New Orleans but from what I know it seems like such a rich and interesting culture, would love to go someday!
Louisiana has an interesting culture because before being apart of the city. it was influenced by the Spanish and the French. which you can see through the architecture and the food
I LOVE this channel ❤️ Just when I think YT is getting boring I find channels like this one. Definitely want to try to make these but they'll be sopapillas with cinnamon sugar and honey... same difference.
I once had the opportunity to stay overnight in "the Kwa-tah" aka The French Quarter and was fortunate enough to try some beignets @ Cafe DuMonde at around 6 a.m. - probably near to, I'm guessing, when they make them and these were the best, freshest, most amazing I had ever had there. My guess is 100% you got a bad batch during your shoot or they were not 100% fresh. So timing over there, most definitely makes a big difference in flavor and fluffiness, etc!
My wife and I go to NOLA about once a year and it's a Musician/Foodie heaven! The sweets are amazing, if you have room left in your stomach from eating all the crawfish and oysters rockefeller 😏
New Orleanian here! Before the video even began I was thinking, his probably won't be as good as Cafe du Monde, only to see that you went to try them first! No wonder your beignets looked good!
Ended up going down there 3x in one year to help family. It was the best food experience I ever had and I’m a super picky eater. 99% of it was homemade 🤤 Definitely trying Loretta’s place next time!

NOLA has the best food!
my gf and i went around that time too and actually got the praline beignets at lorettas in the french market :)
Yep. This here. I'm from Louisiana. Some of the best places to eat are not in the French quarter.
Another local here. Avoid the French quarter as a tourist. The real culture and food is there but you’ll really find something memorable other places. Plz avoid Bourbon st lol
Yeah... Who knew everyone was nice in the service industry in NOLA. NOLA is a dump

Another adaption to Spanish cooking. See, there's much to be learned from the Spanish culture. Even the French creole adapted it to their areas.

Other black businesses to support in NOLA: Willie Mae’s, Morrow’s and Ne-yow’s to name a few. These don’t disappoint! Enjoy!
I love supporting white businesses.
