Rakim''s "My Melody" was mind blowing ~it felt like he was literally painting poetry in flow motion & I was awestruck by his uniqueness ! But even more so his laid back vocalz ~1 verse on "Paid In Full"(never mind that bassline and that dope azz beat) had me hooked ! Thank u young man 4 showing ur appreciation 2 Hip-Hop (Higher Infinite Power-Healing Our People {Professor Griff } ) ! Enjoyed ur reaction & ur thoughtful commentary. U got me as a subscriber.... I also respect ur willingness 2 stand on yours ! 🙏🏾
In 200 years people will still be catching the vapors from this brother his style is untouchable "cursed kids like pyramids when they found the style first to ever let a rhyme flow down the nile" Rakim brought so much food for thought and mystique to the game and NEVER did he poison the youth with negativity and I can't thank him enough a human being of this caliber only comes once in a lifetime thank you Rakim!
That whole 18th Letter was Rakim's Master Album. He got us up and partying initially and then his more spiritual side stepped upon us. All throughout lyric game assassin. Glad I grew up on him. Definitely my #1 GOAT 4 ever. He's unmatched. Even Will Smith said that he emulated him on Summertime and you can definitely recognize it. ❤❤
That's right!! It's mentioned in an early song that the rhymes will get better & better but was slowing down the flow & bars for hip hop to catch up as folks weren't ready for that hard core flow with so many bars folks wouldn't understand them.
This was his first album back after a layoff. I'm surprised that my cassette didn't break. I still have it to this day. Don't know why this popped in my feed. Glad it did. Now down the rabbit hole I go.
I take 7 Emcees... Put 'em in a line... I take 7 more Brothas that think they can rhyme... It'll take 7 more before I go for mine... AND THAT'S 21 EMCEES ATE UP AT THE SAME TIME --Rakim Allah (My Melody)
YES, that whole album!!! - It's been a long time _(Dj Premier) - The Saga Begins_ (Pete Rock) - When I'm flowin' _(Pete Rock) - New York (ya out there?) _(Dj Premier) - The Mystery (Who Is God) - Remember That (Dj Clark Kent) - Guess who's back (Dj Clark Kent) This album is up with Illmatic , quality wise; Top Shelf!!!!
Because Rakim was one of the rappers who literally pioneered modern lyricism his body of work begins with the more simple lyricism of early Hip Hop and evolves into the more advanced lyricism of the modern age. You can't be a pioneer unless you begin before things become advanced and you push things along to bring about progress. But even in songs like As the Rhyme Goes On you can see the subtle advancements that he is making over what everyone around him was doing.
Great review man. This is also one of my favorite songs by him. U should definitely react to Follow the leader, Know the ledge, Don’t sweat the technique, Microphone fiend, The punisher, In the ghetto, Message in the song, It’s nothing, When I be on the mic, It’s been a long time, Love 4 sale, and Untouchables… prolly my fave artist of all time cause he never misses. He has 7 albums and some features and you think he’ll slip up but he’s on point each time. He’s mastered rhyming and especially flowing on a beat 💯👌🏾
Fact's...Rakim never missed a beat. The architect for modern rap music. He almost single handedly change the scope/direction of rap music and turned it into a serious genre. I know he's nominated but he most definitely deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
His lyrics on this album were truly something unique, powerful, and amazing. I think the production could have been better, held the album back from commercial success. ‘It’s been a long time’ is also from this album and is a lyrical hip hop masterpiece. When listening to that song it’s really important to know the context of his career and the changes that occurred in the rap industry since he’s previously released album. With that knowledge, the song’s genius is clear.
When he said "always ready to drop it", he meant he's always ready to put down bars or spit bars/lyrics. In the 90s we'd say he's getting ready to drop a verse
Check out rakim's verse on jay-z's the watcher 2 for more spitting like that. If you wanna hear one of the coldest beats ever and rakim just vibing out, listen to don't sweat the technique!
You are on point, young man. Just keep doing what you do. The music is gonna affect you differently from those of us that were teenagers when Rakim and others came out. We knew the tremendous difference that was expressed in Rakim's style and expression versus what was out prior to his debut. With that being said, the music vibrates on a whole different level, but you are here now. You are drinking it all in as a young man, so just keep doing what you doing.
Bro love this album..... still gets a spin in my car every now and then...ra was the master... great vid... cool show....check out "da fold - rejection, you do you, lose it, falling, thunder" dont think u will be disappointed, keep on grinding brother!
Im 52 and this is the lyrics I grew up on,so when I speak to young folks they think Im from Saturn, nah I just was inspired by these type lyrics, and RA didn't curse!!!! Do hear any curses?
I am glad that you recognize talent. Rakim is the GOD! When you get the time, give "Set Em Straight", "Relax With Pep" and "I Know You Got Soul" a listen. These are three that demonstrates just how versatile and dope he is at his craft. There is a reason he is considered #1 in the industry.
Rakim said I proved that records don’t have to be long if it’s understood and the message is strong you can speak out and hold the crowd as listeners,, you still listening,,,,
Peace Mighty! Good Job! This is definitely one of his bangers! Thae light was shining on tou because The God was sending you some light...Rakim also about produced 80% of his music as well. He has a New Joint out that he is producing with features from , Nipsey, Method Man, Kool G Rap, Kurrpt , Masta Killa', just to name a few. You migh like "Pendulum" ...his production is Crazy!!! As gar as his old stuff you've covered quite a bit. Have tou heard "The Punisher"?! If not check it out! Good to see New School give Old School some love!
It was a dream come true when him and dj premiere linked up i was like finally because preemos beats are sooooo hip hop that you have to be a real mc to understand how to flow on a preemo track and Rakim is that mc

@@careless-minds I can’t wait till U do more of the Rakim reaction….. I’ve been friends or Family like with Rakim for around 25 years….. U might not get 💯 like u loved The 18th letter but u should start off with Let The Rhythm hit em….. this song is Gun Bars from Ra!!!!!!! Lol!!!!!!
Ra got better with time so if you like heavy heavy bars you should go with his later stuff when he was just Rakim, not the earlier stuff with Eric B. There are some great old songs like Lyrics of Fury and Know the Ledge, but his bars are crazier later on. My favorites include Holy Are You and Flow Forever.
I remember whenI copped the CD back in the day and I couldn't get past this song. Over 20 years later and this shit is still one of the dopest tracks ever. If you get a chance check out Holy Are You by Rakim.

Instant 👍 -- Rakim is The GOD M.C. Every other MC's flow is derived from him.

I actually thought it WAS Rakim rapping on Summertime a few years ago 😂
@@careless-minds A first listen will make you feel that....well for me up until he talked about the Plateau.
That album is incredible.
I bought it 6xs
And very underrated
Rakim was teaching!!!
Rakim- "Holy are you"
" The Punisher"
shit, ERRRTHING he makes!
"As heavy as hip-hop is i always ready to drop it." GOAT
Damn I never caught that.
That line "I made waves for Noah"
The Best MC of ALL TIME , PERIOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"I roam through battle zones with, chrome for chaperone". c'mon man......Rakim is so lyrically tough.
Top 3 Emcees ever.
Dope reaction!! If you’re not already familiar, you should go back to his beginning with “Eric B For President” & “My Melody.”
Review “Follow The Leader” “ Microphone Fiend” “Know the Ledge” “The Ghetto”
One of my favorite albums. EVERY song. The Saga Begins might be #1.
Here's how crazy Ra is. In some of his early songs, if you listen closely, some of the lines ends up being the name of one of his other songs.
He did that on this album! He made a verse out of his song titles !!
For awhile I thought I was the only one to catch that!! I’m honored to see someone else caught that!
That's right!! It's mentioned in an early song that the rhymes will get better & better but was slowing down the flow & bars for hip hop to catch up as folks weren't ready for that hard core flow with so many bars folks wouldn't understand them.
The saga begins 💯 🔥 on the same album as the 18th letter
I swear I just said that!!! The Saga Begins Scares me how bananas that shit was!
Rakim is the Greatest,.....

Rakims 18th Letter & The Master are both underrated albums. Classics from The God for those who love real hiphop.
I take 7 Emcees... Put 'em in a line... I take 7 more Brothas that think they can rhyme... It'll take 7 more before I go for mine... AND THAT'S 21 EMCEES ATE UP AT THE SAME TIME --Rakim Allah (My Melody)

You should listen to Rakim song, The Mystery (Who is God)? On this same album. I think is one of the best songs ever written.
Hip Hop can be broadly classified as either Pre-Rakim or Post-Rakim. He's that important.
He bascially birthed every rapper that came after him.
