Hey J.C., EXCELLENT OVERVIEW of BLADE STEELS! Thanks for taking the time to make this video. LOL - I'm somewhere between a Non-Steel Nerd and Dr. Larrin Thomas! The more you hear this information, the easier it is to remember "off the top of your head", and there's always new things to learn! I sometimes check-out articles from Dr. Thomas on his site "Knife Steel Nerds", but I usually start falling asleep and seeing-double by the time I'm halfway through an article - way too deep of a dive! There's something to be said for keeping it SIMPLE, and this was actually quite a thorough overview! I like those charts you showed with the '4 Properties to Consider' (for blade steel). i also like the way you broke it down for different types of functional use/tasks. Very nice explanation of heat treatment as well. Thanks for showing how to use the Gemini & ChatGPT AI (I'm not as tech-savvy, so I had no clue!). Those Gemini & ChatGPT are so cool - I didn't even know you could do that! Thanks again bro!
Great to have the refresher on information and the carry system logic behind. What do you think of the blad geometry in affecting some of the blade characteristics you mentioned? Hapoy Lunar New Year! Thanks!
Thanks for watching! Yes, both blade and edge geometry will affect performance but then it gets quite technical. And from a practical standpoint, it is almost important to know how the knife will perform unless you try it.
Yep, I was saying grinds too. And there was something OD55 brought up recently…apex angle. I can get my convex and scandivex paper cutting sharp but not shaving…my angle is too steep…thick spine knives can affect angle readings. My problem sharpening is mainly with the thicker knives. Thinner convex not a problem I can strop them sharp but I have a BR Bravo 2 and a Aurora scandivex I cannot get to shave
I think most people pick a specific knife based on whether it looks cool or has a specific feature that attracts them. I tend to like blades without serrations but I still have a few with them. I also think many people have more than enough knives but there’s always something new and shiny that gets us to add more to the “collection.” I still want a button lock knife because I don’t have one. I also want a friction folder because they’re really cool. What about steel? I like basic steels and don’t have the budget for the higher end steels. If I can make it razor sharp, I’m good. Thanks for the education and dealing with my rambling thoughts 😊
Haha thanks for watching! I have only one friction folder but it is tough to get used too when you have so many other options for locking knives and slip joints. But, it is one for the collection.
Your opinion…Condor mini Duku vs My Parang whatever is similar shaped I like the condors tighter bird head grip. You only have to move bottom fingers not even wrist for machete work. And that brass wire and pins look very good…the ss is sick gorgeous…heavier and thicker. But the carbon will do most of my yard work. I’m still up for My Parang if it’s as good as the Condors at least
I think both are good but from my experience, the biggest difference is weight. MyParang is lighter, more front heavy and nimble. More shock absorbant. However, these strengths are because it is a rat tang. If one is insistant on a full-tang Parang, then condor is the way to go. I think both are good brands but MyParang is my preferred choice due to weight.
All steel is suitable. But I will look for a harder steel for edge retention since it will be used a lot. But a small size blade is also needed for small objects. Maybe look for wood-carving knives if you are only using it for wood-carving.
Love this video. Maybe a video on types of grinds?
Good idea
Ok!

Thanks so much! Glad you found value in the video. And yes, AI tools are incredible. Check out DeepSeek too.
Great video, great stable!
Thanks! I hope it's helpful!

Yes both edge and blade geometry will affect the slicing performance. I would also add thickness behind the edge too.

My favourite budget steel is the Sandvik 14C28N.
Indeed!

Sir which one steel suitable for wood carving?
