    • @imEden0
      @imEden0 Год назад +10

      @@anekdoche7055 for those who want a better explanation, the orbiter vehicle used in the video named enterprise was used as a test article to make sure the shuttle was able to glide to landing and develop the procedures needed for landing. It never flew to orbit because mainly changes in design. After it was constructed, it was supposed to be modified to be flown to space, but major design changes, which were easily modified on the work-in-progress OV-102 (columbia), were unable to easily be done on OV-101 (enterprise), since it was further along in construction. Budgetary restraints meant that these modifications were not made. Fun fact: it was initially going to be called the Constitution, but Star Trek fans held a petition to change it to the Enterprise after the ship in Star Trek.
      After the challenger disaster, Enterprise was offered as a solution to replace the lost orbiter, but it was cheaper to use the spare parts for shuttle, so she never got to fly.

      I've seen two of the remaining orbiters in real life, Atlantis and Endeavour. They're currently working on a new building at the California Science Center, where Endeavour is located, to create a new exhibit for Endeavour. The ET-94 is also on exhibit at the California Science Center, and is the only remaining external tank that was flight certified. A specific class of lightweight tanks were designed for science missions, which were not planned to continue after the Columbia disaster. ET-94 was instead tested by NASA to help determine the cause of the disaster, and was eventually given to the science center in 2016.
      For the new Endeavour exhibit, two shuttle "srbs," which are really just big tubes of aluminum, are currently at the Mojave Air and Space Port. They are owned by the science center, and will be stacked with Endeavour, along with ET-94 to create a full shuttle stack. I think that'll really put it into perspective. You can also see something similar at Kennedy Space Center's visitor center, where a shuttle external tank and two SRBs area stacked outside the Atlantis exhibit, without a shuttle attached.

    Don't forget the water that keeps the Shuttle from blowing up in the sound suppression system. And the Shuttle can only be in space about 2 weeks before it runs of cabin air so you would some how have to cut 12 months or so off the trip to mars and back. Coming back from Mars, you would need a lot more fuel to slow down. Shuttles heat shield is not moon or Mars rated.

    • @TDChannelKSP
      @TDChannelKSP  2 года назад +6

      Just a few points:
      1: On the sound suppression system - valid point, although this makes me wonder: With the much thinner atmosphere for the sound waves to go through, would it only need a small system? Not like the pad has to be re-used - the shuttle does have to survive though.
      2: That would be true, which is why in the cargo bay there's an entirely new habitat and life support system, weighing some 80 tons or so.
      3: That's... exactly what I do in the video - the entry speed is well below lunar speeds, it's more like almost GTO speeds, plus multiple passes to limit the load - don't know if real shuttle could take even that, but it's better than direct.

    Hypothetically, in real life could you take a fully assembled Space Shuttle from the surface of Mars back to Earth?

    • @TDChannelKSP
      @TDChannelKSP  2 года назад +40

      In theory, with considerable modifications:
      - The RS-25s need to be upgraded to be able to light without GSE and light multiple times - definitely possible, just expensive.
      - Somehow you have to keep the hydrolox chilled to minimize boiloff over the trip home - I don't believe hydrolox has ever been stored for that long IRL, but technically possible.
      - Also need a power source other than the fuel cells, like solar.
      - Then there's the question of re-entry - not sure if Shuttle IRL could handle multiple aerobraking passes or not - maybe it could. If the cargo bay was empty, you could probably slow down more.
      Other than that though, sure!

    • @nls.135
      @nls.135 2 года назад +11

      @@TDChannelKSP Since the shuttles TPS wasn’t ablative, in theory it could’ve done multiple back to back entries/aero brake passes. Though this would require probably all of the tps to stay intact which the shuttle has a muddy history of, not counting the fact that the LV had sea dragon engines in the double digits.

    • @alexsiemers7898
      @alexsiemers7898 2 года назад +6

      @@nls.135 well, the TPS not staying intact was usually related to ice falling off the external tank on launch. Since water vapor basically doesn’t exist on mars, that’s not much of an issue

    Got an interesting proposal.
    A hundred or two years from now, Mars is just about self sufficient, and a war breaks out on Earth, knocking down all superpowers in existence at the time, and a technological setback might come along with it. So, the people on Mars manage to survive, and a long time later develop the infrastructure for spaceflight. They, of course, eventually send some people to Earth.
    This plot line sets up a classic aliens-come-to-earth plot, only with quite a twist, and it’s no surprise that the aliens look like humans. Just an idea, but it sounds like an interesting movie perhaps!

    I do really love the idea of launch vehicles launched from other worlds because of lower gravity and atmospheric drag. Like- Starship is planned to land on Mars and the Moon, but what if you built or landed a Super Heavy on one of those? Feels then you could get a much bigger payload or delta v. Or, like in this case, a Space Shuttle launching from Mars being enough to get back to Earth.

    You repurposed Enterprise as a full-fledged orbiter? What an amazing purpose of it to be put on mars.

    You've got to feel good for the crawler. 60 years later and it finally got its own ticket to space.
    (And it deserves astronaut wings more than Bill Nelson ever did. )

    I am honestly more impressed about the controlled landing on Woomera than on the whole trip to Mars. I'll never understand how some people have that much control over landing position, specially here when deorbiting was made by aerobreaking with little to no fuel for corrections. How the heck did you manage landing on an spaceport runway?

    • @eloscuro704
      @eloscuro704 2 года назад

      I made a tiny SSTO with one engine, about the size of a cruise missile and Jeb riding it all the way to orbit on a seat strapped to the side of the rocket. I got everything right - except the landing on the runway. I have never done that, even once.

      It's the closest landing site. What would have been more impressive is a landing at Cape Canaveral, but maybe I'm being greedy.
