My brother has double vision due to his muscular dystrophy. He had cataract surgery done because of his blurred vision. When he got done having surgery he started seeing double in one eye they are using a prism in his one eye to help him Focus but now it is starting to get blurry. What can he do

Mine went away by itself after 4 months! I had brain surgery back in August which caused me to have double vision. Mine was pretty severe, my prism prescription was at 32. I just patched my eye at all times. I noticed it starting to get better at about the 3 month mark, prism prescription went from a 32 to an 8 in about a months time. but it takes a longgg time to get back to normal. I know one of the comments said it took 4 days for it to go back to normal, mine took more like 4 weeks. Just want to give folks some reassurance if going through the same thing. It was super frustrating and there's not really any resources out there that tell you how long it could take. Wishing everyone good luck though... I empathize with anyone going through this.
Mine went away by itself after 2 months! I read on the internet that in most cases it will mysteriously , slowly go back to normal even if you do nothing. I had to close one eye or wear one eye patch to drive for those 2 months, then I was at work and I cut hair, so my close up vision was never double. I would cut hair easily, then close one eye to walk or drive. It was a scary 2 months but one night I noticed it was not so bad, it got better over about 4 more days and now my vision is perfect again. I did go to an eye doctor in the first week, they said my eyes were fine, just wait 2 months. IF it doesn't go back to normal, they would prescribe prism glasses that would correct it. Good luck everyone.
I'm going through the same thing currently at the moment, 5 weeks in. Could you tell me more about your experience, any other symptoms, anything else you noticed? It would be much appreciated
@@manssupar just on one eye, you choose. Close one eye and see how the double vision goes away. I had to walk around like that for a month or more with one eye closed.
@@Izrl1 yes, don't panic. Go see your eye doctor and let them test your eyes. Most likely you will have good vision in each eye. They will then put a lens in front of your eyes that will begin to bring your vision back together. They will make a note of which lens works the best. If you're eyes do not correct themselves in another month then you will need to get those glasses it will correct your vision. Hopefully it will go away like it does for most people. If not you will have to wear those glasses for a while to function. I had no other symptoms. You will be fine eventually my friend. Keep one eye closed at all times so you don't see double. I switched eyes every few minutes. I wrote an eye patch also to drive out watch TV. 👍
@@SuperStanster thanks man, I've seen my eye doctor and they did exactly that. And my double vision has almost gone away now, however I still see double when I look to the left and it's been like that for a couple of weeks. But I can function like I used to which is great.
I was born with double vision, so when I was a little kid, I didn't know that anything was wrong since I'd always seen that way. My mom and grandma did notice when I was a baby that I didn't cross my eyes. Most babies cross their eyes at least now and then, but I never did. They weren't sure if that was a problem or not. What I and my family did notice much more was that I was incredibly clumsy. I couldn't catch anything reliably. Usually, if I did catch something, it was by accident or luck. I also had trouble with depth perception. If I reached for something, I would sometimes miss it, closing my hand too soon, or hitting it with my fingers and knocking it away accidentally rather than closing my hand around it. I also had a hard time learning to walk and didn't walk without falling down a lot until I was almost three. I would run into things and trip over things much more easily than other kids seemed to. I also never spoke. Didn't even try to babble, until I was three. When I turned three, I started speaking in complete sentences without any babbling. I would sometimes stutter, but you could understand me perfectly. Thinking back on it later, we wondered if I took so long to learn to talk because I wasn't seeing people's faces correctly, so I had to learn a different way to learn to talk than mimicking other people's mouth movements. From the time I was born until I was about four years old, I had terrible fevers and headaches. Sometimes, the fevers would get so high that I would hallucinate and point to things that weren't there, just scared to death of them. Other times, I would see inanimate objects and shadows moving around. When I was able to talk, I would tell my family about how I would have nightmares that wouldn't go away when I woke up. The monsters would chase me from my bed to my parents' room. My family took me to all sorts of specialists for years trying to figure out what was causing the fevers, clumsiness and developmental delays. It was the early 70's, so they didn't know as much about how the brain works as they do now. My family was told all sorts of theories from mental retardation to brain injury possibly caused at birth to possible brain cancer. It was a scary time. We found a specialist in Denver (the nearest 'big city' to where we lived in the panhandle of Nebraska) who did a bunch of tests and determined that I had a hive tumor in my head. It would flare up periodically when I would be too hot, stressed, scared or very tired. The tumor seemed to be benign, but they didn't know of any way to remove or reduce it. They had us come back every six months for a few years to monitor it. Over the next few years, it gradually reduced on its own, and I stopped having fevers so high that they caused hallucinations. I still get feelings of an intense prickly itch and heat in my face when I am too hot or stressed to this day. In the meantime, I still was clumsy as all get out. The specialists who found the tumor suspected that it could be having some effect on my brain's ability to process information, but they weren't sure. We eventually went to a new optometrist who had recently moved to the much closer town of North Platte. I was five now, and my parents had decided to not send me to Kindergarten yet because of my problems. Nebraska didn't require a kid to go to school of some kind until he was seven in those days. This eye doctor examined me and determined that I needed glasses for nearsightedness. He also noticed that both of my eyes didn't track movement together, nor was I able to focus on an object for more than a second or two at a time, and even then only with concentration. Somehow, no other specialist we had gone to had even considered checking my vision. Go figure. He taught me how to do several eye exercises to strengthen the muscles that made my eyes move from side to side especially, but also the ones that made them move up and down. I still do those exercises now and then to this day. Many of the exercises that this RUclips channel has videos for are among the list of exercises that I do. Doing the exercises was very difficult at first and I hated doing them when I was a kid, but they did help me a lot. As the muscles got stronger, I was able to learn to read and solve math problems by the time I was eight. I was also able to improve my dexterity and depth perception well enough to dribble and shoot a basketball by the time I was ten. I was and still am a bit more clumsy and slow than the 'average' person, but I can read and write, do math, build models, play video games (not very well but I can play them) and even drive a car. I can more or less control my double vision now as long as I don't get too tired. If I get tired, no amount of concentration can keep things together. Now, over the last five years or so, I've had to deal with primary hypoparathyroidism which has affected all of my nervous system, joints and muscles, including my eyes. I'm having a harder time keeping my vision singular than I used to. I feel like I'm starting over again with the eye exercises as they are much harder to do now. I'm going to see my current eye doctor and ask about putting prisms in my next set of glasses to see if that helps. Thanks for posting this video and your other videos on vision! People need to know about these vision challenges that they or their loved ones could have. If you haven't done so already, could you do a video about how things like brain tumors, endocrine system problems, etc. can affect peoples' vision?
Had DV since 10 y.o.a. 3 corrective surgeries helped, but haven't cured. Nobody I've consulted, here in Japan wants to take me on, as I'm already 74. It's the the type where I can "snap to normal", but, I'd still love to find a decent pair of corrective glasses. The ones I currently wear only deal with my astigmatism. My eyes (L/R)focus, is also unmatched. (A "triple-whammy", if you will. I think I'm basically "screwed".
My friend (just 70) developed it and had the prism fitted to his glasses, then uncannily a month later I developed it. I blame it on looking at my phone too closely and too long 'cos I'm short sighted and take my specs off when I look. I would suggest the glasses prism makes your eye muscles lazy. Exercise them instead.
I have double vision, age related since March 2022. I'm so tired of the headaches every single day. 24/7 headaches that Panadol and Nurofen only take the edge off the pain. I'm almost 68yrs and i've given up.

Stanley Rama I began experiencing double vision when I looked far away, It started 2 months ago. I could see fine up close. So IT GOT BETTER and now almost back to normal. I had read that this is a possibility it would just go away after 2 months .and my eye doctor told me just to wait and see before getting prism glasses. I could close one eye and not have double vision, so I closed on eye or wore an eye patch so I didn't get dizzy. Wearing the eye patch on either eye, I could watch TV and drive to work, then my work is up close so I was able to do that. Good luck to everyone . It can just go away in 2 to 3 months, but not always. Check with your doctor for advice. they never found a cause.

As soon as the object begins to split into two images, stop moving it and try to focus on making them back into one image again

Hi Dr Lam, can an binocular esophoria be reversed with vision therapy? I have 3 diopter prism glasses (1.5 in each lens) that work to eliminate the double vision since 2017, but my prism arose without a head injury, concussion etc. Cat scan came back in perfect condition. At this point I am losing the ability to wear contacts without seeing double at long distances and the prism seems to be increasing (optometrist has stated that the brain can “eat prism” and get worse with more use). So far I’ve been given transparent lifesaver card and a Brock string to work on. Will my esophoria be reversible and I can get rid of my prism lenses. Help!
Yeah, I’ve had prisms for a year and my vision has gotten worse. Seems like a quick fix and a quick buck. The medical industry wants to sell us things. Rather than leading us to vision therapy in the beginning, they offer prism glasses. I’ve started doing eye exercises at home. It’s not a quick fix, but I feel some improvement.
@@totallyfrozen since the doctor I guess is too busy to reply. I’ll add more details as to my journey. So, after visits to my hospitals eye institute twice, and to another ophthalmologist - they had no answers or were blatantly stating there was nothing they could do. Couldn’t even diagnose the problem properly and quite smug about it. I ended up by luck, visiting a optometrist office on the ground floor of the building for that one terrible opthamologist, who didn’t even want to hear my story as to when this started happening. She took me on as a patient, tried some therapy, which made minor improvements but she was open about being unable to diagnosis it properly, however, she did know exactly who to recommend me to. What a great optometrist and person - not fearing her inability to solve the case and without an loss of pride sent me to someone she thought could solve it. I went to visit the new optometrist and within 10 minutes he had identified that it was a “binocular esophoria”… many of the ophthalmologists and my very first optometrist who gave me the prism lenses were saying it was an “esotropia” or being even more vague as a “strabismus” (which a general term that means your eye isn’t pointed correctly, original optometrist who gave me the prisms couldn’t even get deeper into the details about what it meant, just that it was irreversible and that I’d eventually need surgery. That information was completely wrong and my current amazing optometrist blatantly stated no surgery would be performed on a binocular esophoria ever!!!) After much research of my own, the basic difference between esophoria and esotropia is an esotropia is an eye turn that is always present. An esophoria is an eye turn that is only present under certain conditions. Esophorias may be reversed with therapy, esotropias cannot (ex lazy eye). The good optometrist gave me brock string exercises, you can make one yourself or buy one (he had ones made for his practice) and a lifesaver card. Both of these exercises worked on divergence, making the eyes turn out when looking at farther distances. Took about a month and I was into contacts where I could see no double vision in the distance, it was actually on my birthday! Best birthday present ever. I used the contacts as much as possible because I still had my prism glasses at the time. About a month after that, when he noticed my eyes were getting better, I made the investment for new glasses. Glasses were made with zero prism and I’ve been wearing them ever since with no problems. Night driving now is not as clear, but still doable. Now I understand what my parents mean when they used to say “I can’t see as good at night when driving”. But I can live with that. I’ve personally reduced my phone usage and computer usage as much as possible. I used to read a lot of articles on my phone with small print. I personally believe that this was a main contributor over years that lead to my eyes over converging over time. This is also a behaviour change I can live with. I wish anyone well on this journey, I felt lost at many points and had to spend a lot of money bouncing from one doctor to another to find the right one that had the proper knowledge. Eye exams and glasses prescriptions weren’t something I ever thought about much before, now I realize the importance of having a great optometrist that goes beyond basic prescriptions and is more knowledgeable in their field. I hope this comment helps others find the answers they’re looking for!

Nice story
I hope you are okay now

The fact that I can switch it to double vision and at normal vision at any time
Yeah while you're young. The older you get, the more difficult it becomes.
Mine first appeared in 2005. In 2009 I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.
How did the camera create the double vision effect, generally curious.
Secret, but it's very simple when you have two of the same video layers. Change the opacity of one track, and use motion.

I began experiencing double vision when I looked far away, It started 2 months ago.

That information was completely wrong and my current amazing optometrist blatantly stated no surgery would be performed on a binocular esophoria ever!!!)
After much research of my own, the basic difference between esophoria and esotropia is an esotropia is an eye turn that is always present.
