One of the most surprising catches of my life was when i tossed a piece of nightcrawler to catch some bait and a 36 inch brown trout grabbed it. I was only using 4 pound test, no net, took me 30 minutes to get it in. Unfortunately, i caught its gills and it blead out, but made for a good meal that night.
This is why I tend to use 12lb at the lowest, regardless of what I'm fishing for. Tiring out fish is bad for the fish, many studies show this. Even if they survive, exhausting them fucks up their immune system for many days/weeks afterwards, making them prone to diseases and death. Everyone should make it a priority to land the fish as quick as possible, not let it fight and wear itself out, unhook it and release as quick as possible.

I fish mostly smaller bodies of water, streams and resivours. So 12 pound test doesn't work in these places.
If I was in Texas I use minimum of 15 pound for sure, but in these parts a 5 pound fish is huge. So 4 or 6 pound test is much better. Fly fishing even smaller at times.
Most fish up in the mountains average about 1 to 2 pounds. But if ya catch 10 a day, it's still fun
Where were you fishing at because a 36 inch brown weighs over 25lbs
The world record brown was 38 inches and weighed 44 lbs 5 ounces
@@clarklindquist8137 The fish do not give a sht what test you use, believe me. No matter what other people say. The fish are not seeing the line and ignoring the bait unless you are using 50lb mono or something. I have trout fished with 20lb line many times. No need to use drag.

What you'll see if the water was lower is a deep hole up within the spillway area where when faster water has gone thru erodes
downward making a hole. Many times you can throw bait up into the edge & catch fish as it rolls out of the "Hole". Also you'll
find that if you get lucky you can get your bait to lay up in the edge of that hole & wait til any large cats come for it but if you
get one up in the Hole, you'll have to walk the fish down so you can get him out of that place. I once sat for almost an hour
with a large Cat staying up in the "Hole" not moving. I passed my 13foot surf rod off to multiple fishermen to tell me what
they thought, one thought I was snagged up but I kept pulling & a 54lb Cat came out of the Hole. There are 100+ fish in
some of these holes ; Alligator Gar as well will push 100 lbs & I hope to see you get one. Yep, you will. peace
