some tips.....use a pencil to lightly draw your guide lines and trace your letters so no worries about covering the marker lines (which btw will give you the 3d effect since the good markers will eat into the foam ) . saves on doing paint layers
when coloring in the letters and cracks with paint....lay your stone flat and use a thinner wash.....when you stand it up (while paint is still wet) it will give you a more natural drip effect....just quickly swipe with paper towel downwards if you get too much or it looks too drip like and it will still look good and give you the effect you have ...dont forget a bit at the top....think about how water would pour over and down and where it would pool and drip
fast way to paint ( i like the idea of adding sand for texture) just take a paper towel or sponge brush and smear the base coat on. i just use cheap apple barrel brand from walmart..(non gloss) .one 50 cent bottle does about 3 tombstones front and back of the size you have. i have some that have held up in all weather for over 15 yrs doing this..one coat done
think about using diffrent shades and colors of paint ....browns, creams, dark and light grays and even some greens sponged on for a mossy effect ...it makes for a fun cemetary with variety and doesnt get boring doing the same method over and over.
you can add ebellishments or other cut out pieces of foam to the stones too(tho it does make stacking harder for storage. just paint them to match the stone....glue them on ..ive used rope (for a western one) and silk flowers
create your own stencils out of sheets of plastic ...the window stuff on the front of barbie boxes works good ...simply lay it over a font size you want and trace....cut out with exacto knife. dont forget to leave a lot of space between letters so you can cut them out and use individually if not making a phrase or name ...you can use them taped down on the stone and masked off the rest of stone and use whatever color you want your letters to be and lightly spray paint them...the spray paint will eat away the foam slightly and you can still do a few drips later

Instead of adding foam to back use short pieces of pvc pip and slide over some rebar or wood stakes

Slow down the speed of your Dremel and that will help with the melting of the foam. Great tutorial 🪦

Oh no! Well the mini hack saw is probably $10? That will get you the shape. If you have a flat head screw driver you may be able to use that to “carve out” the letters. Get creative! I bet you can make these with all kinds of different things! Happy haunting.
