  • Tombstone carvings are a great way to add some much-needed character to an otherwise flat canvas, but finding store-bought appliqués to fit your need are hard to come by. Carving Halloween tombstone details is easier than you'd think, and with a bit of planning and patience, you can make your own custom carving.

      Thanks! Its not the best carving, since I don’t really do stuff like this, but decided to post it to encourage other people to try stuff they may not be good at and maybe they’ll be surprised like I was.

      VanOaksProps I think you did a great job Derek, it looks awesome! And I’m with you, I really love to encourage people to try new things! I taught FX classes and sculpting for over 20 years and I loved those moments when people created something themselves for the first time and were so surprised and gratified by it! It’s such an awesome thing to watch and be a part of! So many people have the talent hidden within and just don’t even know it cuz they’ve never tried! Keep up the awesome work buddy, you’re doing great things! 😁😍🎃👍

    Another great tutorial, at first I was thinking “I’ve seen this before!” But it was from the overall tombstone build vid. Nice job! The small sanding sticks- I don’t recognize those, but they kinda look like a nail file cut into strips... I have a set of small metal files (harbor freight) I use for small details, but I use my Xacto as far as I can to shave.
    (Everyone who’s ever used an xacto for any period of time has a good injury/scar to prove it! 😂)

      They're similar, and you could definitely use nail files for this. What makes them different is they're a bit thicker, flexible, and come in a variety of grits.

    Oh Jeez, in the other video, I assumed you sculpted it from Sculpey or made a mold and used Plaster of Paris. I didn't know you formed the thing out of foam. WOW! Wonderful job. Question: Where does one buy sanding sticks?

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  3 года назад +1

      Thanks! Hobby shops carry them or you can get them on Amazon.

    I didn't know sanding sticks were a thing. Here I am wrapping a piece of sandpaper around an ice cream stick. 😂 I wonder if they sell them in Australia. You guys seem to have heaps of things there that we can't get, and not just Halloween related stuff.

      You're not alone in the wrapping sand paper on sticks. I do that too!

    Your videos and tutorials are great! Almost 60 days from Halloween and I'm watching some videos for the 3rd+ time. Where do you get inspiration for your designs and epitaphs?

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  3 года назад +2

      Typically from real life and then I mix them together to create new designs. That way it’s not disrespectful to the dead.
