Hey Jay. Since you're not using the Alex drawers for storage, why not drill passthrough holes at the back of it and put your power strip in them? This is what I've done with my own setup. Exactly!! At my desk I have two computers (Personal and server) and two laptops (Personal and work) connected to one screen through a KVM switch. Those monsters are cable magnets!!! I also inherited my desk, with minimal desire to purchase a new one, so it is not an optimal format. While I manage my cables, I never see them regardless because I am standing up when I approach the desk and the desk is blocking them when I sit down. I would have to make an effort to stand on the otherside of the room and be like damn thats a mess.
I tried it without proper cable management. I always kicked them below the table, touched them with my feet and was annoyed to hell. Also it just looks really really bad. I cannot tell you why but I absolutely hate cables dangling around. It’s the worst.
Hey Jay, you're pretty handy with a circular saw. What about constructing a cabinet to replace the double Alex drawers in the back corner? You could even leave the floor out of it and tuck the subwoofer back into it, saving a bit more space and looking a bit classier. Cut down a sheet of plywood, or start from some 4'x4' project panels. Glue, stain, and finish, and boom, done! I built my own desk out of 1x3s and a butcherblock counter top, and I love it. Was fun to combine woodworking and tech stuff.
Positioning one or both of the corner drawers at a 45-degree angle would provide the necessary support while making the drawers immediately accessible. You're right about the shelves. I would remove everything off the walls in the room, put them on a bed, pick the one you like the most, decide the best place for it, go back to the next one you like the most, and so on. Also, laminate flooring.
31 days of techmusss!!! hell yeah! Nice vid. My feedback for your room would be to defo keep the things important to you over a set up that may be more in flow with the room or gaming.
Alex drawers with the Uppspel desktop is a great desk setup. I just got it 2 weeks ago and absolutely love it. The Karlby tops are just not deep enough. Unfortunately the Uppspel is wider than the Alex drawers, but I put a plant beside it to hide the gap behind the wall and it looks great. It is a beautiful, functional monochrome setup that looks very modern. I couldn't be happier
A good start is listing materials and colors. After it s done, everything is building up fast. I would keep the 2 wood tops and mix them with dark tubular metals, dark chakcoal grey and antique metal cabinets. You have fun painting and moding cases ! Do the same to your desk
I find the notifications statement at the end funny. Every other youtuber was making a big deal out of also hitting the bell and now it's like "doesn't work". I never used it because I only get on youtube when I am going to watch videos. Which means I am always going to see 100% of my subscribed channels videos as soon as I possibly can. Which quite often is seconds to minutes after they come out. The RUclips alerts I get are often for videos I already watched or have already seen exist several times. RUclips could do with some work on that lol
Hey Jay, for the corner drawers you could turn them to be angled, leaving a gap in the corner... possibly enough room to hide the sub?? Also would make the drawers look accessible to those who complain lol.
8:10 agreee 10000% its insane quality , they are the only channel i cant do something while there video in the background i cant even use my phone while seeing it its eye pleasure , the nice thing is that some channels took this approach and one of them Optimum i love his channel
My favorite RUclipsr setup in all honesty for me Jay, is yours. I really like what you did with your game room and it gave me ideas for what I would like to implement in my own gaming room when i actually get the space for it.
24:40 take out the far right draws stick woofer inside and make timber frame (painted) with 8mm x 8mm steel mesh insert with 2x kitchen Blum hindge with touch catch . also paint the draws same as wall.
I love Paul's setups and his content around them. His vlog videos building and working on their home and setups have always been a massive inspiration for me on ideas for my own space.
Honestly Jay, just do you man. By that I mean make your setup an extension of yourself, it doesn't need to flow we're not here cause we like how nice of a setup you have, we're here cause we like you as a person. So long as your setup feels comfortable to you and is an extension of yourself, that's all that matters.
Yeah, but if he wants to do a few videos about changing his set up, that is easy content for him to create while also keeping things fresh in his life. He doesn't just build and upgrade PC's because he HAS TO HAVE THE BEST! Pretty sure he just likes messing with setups, PC's, cars. Jay likes to have projects haha. But I get what you're saying. I also like showing off a few items that have meaning to me rather than doing some type of theme.
@@firesayer23grumpybuns75 I know, I've been watching him for awhile now. He loves changing things up a lot which I totally get I was just trying to let him know that he doesn't have to if he's comfortable with his current setup.
My wires under the desk were a breeze by using a simple staple gun at a slight angle to partially attach the staples to the underside of the desk in a uniform pattern about a foot apart, then I use them to attach cable the ties. If you, do it correctly in multiple rows you can make it just as nice to look at as the rest of your cable management. Another trick is for small cables like a wall mounted surround sound speaker wire just use painters' tape to cover the wire then paint the tape with your wall color. You will be amazed how close you have to look to ever see the wires.
With all do respect to all Tech RUclipsrs, including Jay, Paul seems (because I never met him) like one of the nicest guys anyone can meet in the world ... Hence Jay calling him Fuzzy 😊
Jay your setup is great. You talked about how it looks like a bunch of randomly elements have been pulled from thin air and that there is no theme but there is a theme. The theme is that everything there is important to you in some way, and that is a great way to create any pc setup
Honestly, I'm digging some of the Asus ROG Ikea stuff. Particularly the peg board and trophy case, but if you'd use it in your already dark room I would have preferred if they had a white option or stainless steel instead of the black. Or they do have metal pegboard at Home Depot or Lowes that you can get in stainless steel which looks good, too, but I do like the ROG theming on the Ikea one. Linus's setup was updated last December, prior to the picture used in this video, and he did a Logitech sponsored video taking care of the cable management. His clickbait title for the video was "It's time to break up." He did switch over to a wireless keyboard and mouse, as well as drilling holes through the desk to route cables underneath it as best he could.
I mean, Ikea have the pegboards in different sizes and colours, including wood tones and white (just missing the ROG logo stuff) that work with the accessories
You are right about wood tones, wood is your friend Jay. Wood shelves would make your room look more comfortable. Too much metal is bad feng shui for a room.
Jay, your not a BOOMER, you are a tech savvy GenX. I am a late Boomer; I played Pong, Atari 2600 and Intellivision when they first came out and we had an Apple ][+ in our home in 1982. I consider myself a late Boomer that knows more about tech than my peers. However, you know more about tech than 99% of GenX'ers which makes you a fantastic resource for most of us Plebs. Great channel, love everything you post...
Hey everyone, if you’re struggling with cable management you can get 100 of the really easy and discreet Velcro cable ties for like $5 to $6 on Amazon or at lowes, Walmart, and Home Depot (as far as I know) but they are reusable and they hide your cables amazingly while being hardly noticed if they even are spotted
15:28 - I'm gonna take a safe guess and say the top (16:9) monitor is the primary because it's the one that has all the tray icons, click, audio & notifications in the lower right corner.
You should build your own custom feature thing which you could mount on the wall with lights or however you see fit. The Star Wars themed build proves that you have the ability to make your own artwork would be awesome to see a personal touch of Jay in there.
Didn't Linus make an entire video about cleaning up his cable management? He even went with the 915 TKL and like a G pro both lightspeed? he even drilled his desk.
One support I can give for not totally hiding power strips is it does make them more accessible if you do ever need to plug or unplug something. I atm still have my PS5 on my subwoofer, mostly because I do have a sort of entertainment centerish thing I could stick in it but I am not sure how its air flows, The slot is not at all tight and the back is fairly open but that does not mean the console itself has linear airflow.
Kinda neat that since the pandie started the amount of tech channels that have switched to the rest of the setup is really nice. Like, we're not getting new tech, so we might as well get comfortable.
I prefer speakers firing down at about a -30 degree angle. To me, it just presents a better sound stage. My mind is much better tricked into thinking something is real than thinking it's coming from a speaker with them elevated.
I have the same speakers as Mike! I like his warm wood tone setup. My walls are light grey with white trim, my desk is made of three white Ikea Alex drawer bases and a birch countertop......had to add the warmth of wood to the space!
If you still want shelves on the wall, maybe some hardwood shelves supported by wrought iron brackets. The white cabinet drawers stand out starkly for me, which I would paint a darker color to mute them. The entirety looks very good as-is. So minor changes may provide effective.
Jay: "I have no idea what Kyle's setup at home is." Kyle Bitwit, in the middle of the video's production: "I'm going to release a video of me cleaning up my home setup." Classic tech community.
Kyle did put up a vid recently on his home set up. Pretty basic but with plans to expand. Was originally his and hers. Great vid and I never thought of the amount of production effort hardware canucks puts in but damn!
Kyle needs to put more of a radius on the white the power cable @20:32 , it is pinched and might become a fire hazard. But the setup is so cool. You could do this at home with a false wall!
It's a nice setup Jay! It's very clean and simple, can't see any wires in it. The only critique I'd give you is your monitor setup should be more balanced in terms of size and layout. Maybe 2 equal sized wider monitors put together or 3 same sized smaller ones in a row? Or you could do 1 wide monitor in the middle and 2 smaller equal sized ones left and right :) Edit: I would also extend the ship shelf all the way to other wall and across the other side, that way you can put all your memorabilia on it and everything will look level with one another!
Hi bro, since you've been putting much effort into your truly fascinating Star Wars case builds, might I suggest that you come up with a Millennium Falcon-inspired interior PC setup, particularly the "gaming area" where Chewbacca and R2D2 were slugging it out with holographic chess in a New Hope. Your work on it would make a perfect series of videos as well.
Linus just happened to have an 'extra' dslr, and auditioned it against a web cam during the setup video... I remember that he also thought the webcam looked just as good, but if you have a dslr available, then why the hell not! It's also funny when his kids occsionally walk by in the background. Also, I'm not sure a stack of your racing wheel/tires is exactly a 'glamorous' backdrop... Are you streaing from your garage? Also, I'm sure this was a dig, but that was also meant to be temporary while he was locked down for a while with Covid. Linus and Luke actually just started doing live shows together in person recently!
You and Paul should do a monthly show. I love Bitwit. I understand the decision but I REALLY miss seeing dudes in this world at this level collaborating.
Maybe it'd be super niche and not as cozy as you're looking for, but your father's retirement flag reminded me of visiting the ship my grandfather served on, it's on display as a floating museum up in Washington state (USS Turner Joy), and it had a lot of that like matte military grey mixed with natural wood in the quarters he would've stayed in. Given your affinity for naval ships and family history it might be an interesting aesthetic to look into, especially with the incredible detail work I have seen you do with weathering and distressing metal textures. I look forward to seeing the new room tour/journey!
Been using an unfinished solid door that I got new for $70, stained it, and put it on a standing desk frame. The door was cheaper than the ikea tops, and combined with the alyx drawers, could be a more cost effective way to make a desk.
Jay this is actually my first comment, but you said you really like wood tones and wanted a texture or something of that nature on the wall, there are fairly affordable “wood panels” that mount on pre existing walls you may find interesting to give you a more contemporary, natural, adult, and unique feeling. They can also support shelves too
Ha thanks Jay for the analysis and the compliments
I think one of the things that Jay didn't comment on that I have noticed and appreciate is the amount of work that goes into the color grading your content. Glue, stain, and finish, and boom, done! I built my own desk out of 1x3s and a butcherblock counter top, and I love it. Was fun to combine woodworking and tech stuff.
Kyle wins for sure. I loved watching when he was putting it all together. The issues with that PC were pure entertainment. Lol
Steve from Hardware Unboxed recently showed his custom desk build for his new garage setup, it was pretty unique and cool looking.
Hey Jay, for the corner drawers you could turn them to be angled, leaving a gap in the corner... possibly enough room to hide the sub?? Also would make the drawers look accessible to those who complain lol.
8:10 agreee 10000% its insane quality , they are the only channel i cant do something while there video in the background
i cant even use my phone while seeing it
its eye pleasure , the nice thing is that some channels took this approach
and one of them Optimum i love his channel
My favorite RUclipsr setup in all honesty for me Jay, is yours. I really like what you did with your game room and it gave me ideas for what I would like to implement in my own gaming room when i actually get the space for it.
Thank you God for people like Jay's dad.
I about died laughing at the thought of Jay smacking his table and all his plugs falling out.
Super old stills for Linus’ setup. Doesn’t even have his beard yet lol
I love the suttle node to Jayztwocars with the tires mixed in with the pc towers.
Very classy Jay very classy!
The setup from Linus is specifically to deal with the corona style WAN Show aka at home 😂😂
And he made a follow-up video on cable management
Hence the "overkill" DSLR camera since its for talking head style WAN show.
15:30 primary monitor in Windows 10 has notification tray and icons next to the date and time, so the top monitor (smaller) is primary
25:15 Right on! It's always cool to see support for vets. I am one myself.
I always appreciate your willingness to critique yourself and how candid you are with all of us. Thanks for the great video.
I like "Machines and More's" simple soft setup, it fits his delivery so well. If you are not familiar, Machines and More is mostly about ITX builds.
I love my new setup; thank you Jay for your two cents on your 'how to' videos & on looking at other people's setups for inspiration.
Seems kinda odd you reviewed Linus' in progress desk setup instead of his completed one but idk. Cool video regardless.
Jay that Linus setup is from early Covid, he was just started the beard, and he finally fix it 11 mouth ago on YT call "Its time to break up".
I hope OptimumTech is in there. He has the cleanest setups ever.
@ 21:40 Hey it's lowfi girl! That's some serious chill right there!
I think Jay might be the first person in the history of the internet to say "I don't like anime" and get away with it.
this could really need timestamps!
27:47
With all do respect to all Tech RUclipsrs, including Jay, Paul seems (because I never met him) like one of the nicest guys anyone can meet in the world ... Hence Jay calling him Fuzzy 😊
Jay your setup is great. You talked about how it looks like a bunch of randomly elements have been pulled from thin air and that there is no theme but there is a theme. The theme is that everything there is important to you in some way, and that is a great way to create any pc setup
I saw 27 minutes and thought this would drag on forever. I'm on minute 26 and don't want it to end. Good stuff Jay!
Idea for next one: Reviewing small tech youtuber's setups! Eh? eh? Can submit via Twitter like the the previous entries of the setup review vids.
Upset By Setups: The JayzTwoCents Story.
Yep
jay just hates on linus for some reason
@@mrwick7961 jealous id guess
I love the Bismarck ship model in your set up Jay!
I feel like Hardware Canucks could host a master class in lighting.
Linus has cable managed his setup since that video.
Kinda neat that since the pandie started the amount of tech channels that have switched to the rest of the setup is really nice. Like, we're not getting new tech, so we might as well get comfortable.
As an Australian I am compelled to say I like Steve's from HUB. His studio setup is unreal. But then, yeah, Kyle kinda takes the cake.
I prefer speakers firing down at about a -30 degree angle. To me, it just presents a better sound stage. My mind is much better tricked into thinking something is real than thinking it's coming from a speaker with them elevated.
Wow. So looked at the headline of this video and thought, huh... What a cool idea!
Jay: "I have no idea what Kyle's setup at home is."
Kyle Bitwit, in the middle of the video's production: "I'm going to release a video of me cleaning up my home setup."
Classic tech community.
Or you could do 1 wide monitor in the middle and 2 smaller equal sized ones left and right :)
Edit: I would also extend the ship shelf all the way to other wall and across the other side, that way you can put all your memorabilia on it and everything will look level with one another!
Your work on it would make a perfect series of videos as well.
dimitri hair: awesome
jay hair: compressed to oblivion
You forgot to mentioned that Linus’s PC isn’t even in the same room as his set-up.
15:22 You can tell which display is his main because only one has the system tray icons (The top one).
I've always liked Paul's the most. The U-shaped desk just seems to be pretty convenient.
Kyle gives me a galaxy like vibe, and I'm an Astronomy junkie, so I like he's a lot.
Paul has the best production setup!!
You could put a section of "thin" brick in place of the floating shelves. Very classy and breaks up the wall.
Yeeees, looking forward to Techmas!!!
