Aphantasia tip/hack here! So I have this and my therapist taught me a trick to help bridge the gap between a physical object and picturing it in your mind. Pick up an item (an apple for example). Spend a minute or so looking at it, all of its little details and doing your best to “burn that image” in your mind. Now, close your eyes while still holding the apple. As you move the apple around in your hands, try to remember what you were JUST seeing. So it’s not so much you “picturing” it in your head, so much as you’re “remembering” it. Doing this repeatedly with random objects a couple times a day really really helped me. I think it has something to do with creating new neural pathways, kinda like you’re rewiring your brain to make a connection between the physical world and your imagination. Hope this helps 🫶

I think he's losing his hair. I'm not 100 percent sure, but this style would certainly provide a reasonable explanation for what he's been doing with it lately. I know his wife cuts it, but there's no way she's encouraging that style.

i am not gonna lie, people being able to visualise anything in their heads is absolutely insane to me. it's like a superpower. i have complete aphantasia, no outlines even - i can't imagine *anything* and i can't believe people in the world actually walk around with fucking hd images of anything they want in their brains.
My sister is like that! Which is crazy to me because I can close my eyes and envision an entire house-or whatever-and interact with objects inside the house. I can make coffee and sit down, I can talk to random people and go to parties or restaurants, I can live an imaginary high detailed world inside my own imagination
What is life like for you 😭 your minds eye is just empty?

I find the apple scale so interesting, me and my friend talk about this a lot because they are a 5. they cannot picture anything, they say it can be described in words but they can't see anything. I find it so fascinating because they're one of the most creative people i know and i always wonder how they know origional concepts of what to draw or paint when they cannot picture it first. I on the other hand am a 2, I can see things clearly in my mind so we just exchange how it feels to eachother. Also idk about anyone else but i see a green apple.

I do Shane's soap trick when I travel, but with music. I pick an album and only listen to those songs during my trip. Then anytime I hear those songs in the future, it transports me back to those trips I went on

I have aphantasia. I didn't know for a long time because it's all I've ever known. When I heard people say "picture" a thing, I always thought it was more of a figure of speech. It's really refreshing to hear people talk about it more because it's kind of hard to explain to people. Making art is hard because I can't "see" it in my head first, and mental math and spelling out loud is hard because I can't visualize it all in my head. My partner also has aphantasia, but he falls on a different part of the spectrum and can see things a little clearer than I can. Thanks for bringing this up, Steven!

I absolutely love the vacation soap idea from Shane, I've always felt like scent-based memories are the most vivid ones
Hilariously I feel like they do fall into the oldest, middle and youngest stereotypes but not at all in the way they describe! Ryan is the worrier who makes plans, takes the lead and tries to keep things on track.
Steven is much more concerned about letting things run smoothly even at his own expense and does his best not to rock the boat and is uncomfortable with too much attention.
And Shane is an independent goofball who is happy to stand out but not even worried enough to fight anybody who disagrees with him.
But then I’m a youngest so feel free to disagree with me 😂

Shane and others on the opposite of afantasia actually have hyperfantasia, sometimes our imagination can be so vivid that we imagine doing things and it feels like real memories. I visualise doing chores all the time and then genuinely believe that I've done them. I also often think that other people's stories have happened to me, like if a friend tells a detailed story about an experience, I might later think it was me that had that experience
I don’t have that specific problem but I need to learn things visually. When learning a language I need to know it’s spelling because I will need to look it up visually a hundred times until I remember it audibly. I get so irritated when people insist on just telling me something and not understanding I need to see it. All my mental math involves visuals too.
I literally cannot grasp that people can’t picture stuff in their head. I’m like Shane. I can picture stuff in vivid detail. It’s all I’ve ever known. So I cannot fathom that some people can’t 😅

Discovered I had a deviated septum at 22, responsible for a lot of nasal drainage and shitty sleeping habits early in life. Undergoing corrective surgery is easily one of the best decisions I've ever made. Substantial quality of life improvement, fewer illnesses, and no issues 10 years on. Talk to your physician first and probably an ENT specialist, though I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who has it and suffers from difficulty sleeping and breathing on one side.
I also had a deviated septum. While that was being corrected they discovered I had an extra air cavity(sinuses). Had that also removed. It helped tremendously. I honestly didn’t know what I was missing.
I think I have another air cavity that is blocking my airway again.
By the way they originally thought the air cavity was a polyp.
I also do the soap thing that shane does… I always buy a scented soap bar from lush, so whenever I’m at home and feeling nostalgic about a certain vacation, I just buy the associated vacation soap… for example, on my birthday we always go on vacation in northern Italy, close to Austria, and I always use lush’s sleepy soap bar and bathbomb. And if I smell the “sleepy” scent from lush I’m transported to all the nice memories from all of my birthdays! I also do it with music. Every vacation has a certain album associated with it, for example, during my last trip to the uk I only listened to Flower Boy by Tyler the Creator, and every time I listen to a song from that album all the memories from said trip come to mind. 1000% recommended
On the aphantasia thing, as an animator not only can i picture an apple, i can picture a fully rendered articulated 3D hand, tendons and all
Steven is right that Furby was definitely that gift to give in 98. I remember having a sleepover at a friend's house, and we both had our furbies out when we went to sleep. A car's headlights must have triggered them, because those little gremlins started talking to each other in the middle of the night and scared the shit out of both of us.
I do the same thing that Shane does with soap, with music! I have certain songs that i will listen to for all of a trip and when i listen to them i feel like I’m there…. so cool.
The reaction of everybody when Shane reveals the store had cherry tomatoes finally was hilarious. I love this saga they’ve talked about this place more episodes than not at this point
i learned that i have aphantasia in my freshman year of college and it was weird at first but i've come to be ok with it. the point steven made about not being able to visualize loved ones' faces is a particular point that has lived rent free in my mind over the past few years but i think as long as i have pictures and memories, i'll be ok :)
additionally, there's levels to your mind's eye regarding internal dialogue as well. some people hear their own voice, some people can hear entire songs, and some people hear nothing in their mind but still have words/thoughts that pass through.

I’m glad Steven brought up the aphantasia. It’s actually more rare to not see anything as opposed to being able to. Many ppl on tiktok have the misconception that they’re somehow special for being able to visualize things in their head when it’s just the opposite.
Hey, Steven! Fun fact for you, there's also an opposite of Aphantasia that exists under sepcific circumstances. It's called Synesthesia and I'm one of the people who have it.
The way it works is when I hear sounds, my mind creates "colours and shapes" that I see. Think "fireworks in your imagination with colours based on intensity and tone of the music" kind of like a visualizer music video. Though its different for almost every person, and not just limited to music.
A good example is when I hear a loud unexpected sound, it's a combination of yellow and red and completely disrupts my ability to interact with anything for a few seconds.
I'm still not over Steven asking if Sportclips is for Sporty hair cuts 🤣🤣🤣

We learned in my neuroanatomy class that smell actually is highly linked to memory, as the path to the olfactory bulb passes through the limbic system (which has the hippocampus responsible for encoding memory, and the amygdala responsible for emotive states). Really cool neuroscience hack with the soap!

I have aphantasia too! I can see flashes of detail but I can't keep it for more than a second or two. I also start to be unable to picture loved ones faces after not seeing them for a bit. The longer I've known them, the longer it takes, but max like a month
Also I got my tonsils taken out when I was like 21 and it was the WORST. Remember the last time you really burned your tongue? Imagine that but x10 and the entire back of your throat lol bc they laser them now

I got strep all the time as a kid, and it was a big problem bc I had huge tonsils and they would almost suffocate me every time they got inflamed. The doctors kept saying "we really gotta remove these, but we can't bc you're sick" and then when I'd be better they'd say "you're not even sick, why'd we remove them." I only got them out when I was 13 because they were actively stopping me from breathing when I slept.
My tonsils have been deemed Remarkable more than once. I have always been told they haven't excised them (I'm 49) because they catch all the contagions that would otherwise enter my system. Haven't had Strep since Covid/not working with the public.
It's fun listening to people talk about Aphantasia as someone with very severe Aphantasia, personally i like to explain it as when being asked to picture something like an apple, i know what it looks like of course, but the image file is corrupted and i cant open it. Also not a lot of people know but it also effects dreaming, I often don't dream at all but when I do it's the equivalent of being blind since my brain can't make the visual information, so I'm often very aware of the fact that I'm dreaming, so usually I'll just let it play it's course but if I don't like the dream I can just force it to end. Aphantasia definitely has more downsides than ups, but one benefit is if I ever experience something that gives me PTSD, I don't have to worry about triggering myself by visualizing the event.

Learning about how Steven communicates I’m realizing he sounds like Tobias Fünke from Arrested Development.
Once I bought a pack of tuna to eat in my car at lunch, and when I opened it the smell was so awful I went back inside work crying and gagging, and they had to give me different clothes to wear and sent a maintenance person out to sanitize my car. I couldn't eat tuna for years. Yesterday I was shopping and picked up some cat food, and one of them was open and rotting and the smell got on my hands. Not going to lie, it was definitely a little bit of a flashback.
And Shane's Kryptonite is discovered. Also, I'm a 5 on that visualization scale. If I try to picture an apple, I get nothing and my inner voice tries to make up for it by describing an apple for me with words.
Steven talking about his aphantasia reminded me a lot of Bob Muyskens (muyskerm) talking about his own aphantasia on Distractible, especially since Wade and Markiplier are also very good at visualizing and they go indepth about the differences a lot, like Bob almost never dreaming. If I had a nickel for every time a podcast trio of RUclipsrs I watch talked about one of them having aphantasia I'd have 2 nickels etc

This is hysterical and my daughter just had her tonsils and adenoids taken out and her voice did change but she sleeps so much better and doesn't struggle to breathe through her nose when she sleeps.

Mucus buildup in the nose is there to trap all the bacteria, viruses, pollen, dust, and other junk that enter through your nose. If you stop it, you'll get all the crap in your lungs and that will not be a fun experience. Also Ryan feeling shifting nasal congestion means you have sensitive nasal turbinates. Turbinates are like the air filters of your nose and blood that feeds the turbinates tends to enlarge the turbinates, making you congested on one side or the other. This is more prevalent when you're sleeping of course because you are on your side where gravity pools blood to the turbinate side you're lying on. Some people can feel this shifting congestion which is very annoying cause I have it too and yeah its annoying.

yo steven, for the aphantasia stuff, im definitely one of the people who cant visualise things super well. when i picture something in my mind, its like it has a black overlay (like an overlay of nothingness) that is quite grainy. i can picture an apple in my head, but i cant really focus on the details without it disappearing completely. i also find the scale of aphantasia really interesting. for sounds, if ive ever heard someones voice before, i can make their voice say whatever i want to in my mind, even if said person has never said anything like it before. i know people who cant do that and its wild to me. its also wild to me that some people can see full fledged HD pictures in their mind without it disappearing. the human brain is so interesting!

I’m an AP bio student who’s learning about the immune system rn. Mucus is a barrier defense that traps pathogens (or disease causing microorganisms like viruses or bacteria). When we secrete lots of mucus while we are sick, we are getting rid of a bunch of pathogens that are stuck in there. So yes mucus is annoying but it actually does rlly help in keeping the body safe from harm
Shane I do the same thing with perfume on vacation. I love getting a unique perfume, wearing it on vacation and then years later coming back to that scent floods all those memories back to me.
For steven: i know at least 4 people with afantasia, they all found out as adults that it wasn't the norm but they had spent their whole childhoods thinking phrases like "picture this" were metaphorical
