Great video. I have the same kayak and love it. When I drilled the hole for the cable I bought a small rubber stopper with a hole in the center from a beer and wine supply store. I slit the cork lengthwise and actually ended up triming some of it away till it fit just right. It's not totally water tight but better than leaving a big hole
Just recently bought a striker 4 for my lifetime kayak and I do like the clean setup. What kind of box did you use for the battery. I figure any kind of waterproof box would work just fine.
Hi! I bought a regular waterproof box at Walmart for this project; I’ve bought a couple more on Amazon, Bass Pro & Dick’s since then and they all seem the same!
This is a nice rig runthrough! I just got my Bonafide SS127 (thanks again for your honest review which helped a ton and also told me what to watch out for -- I got the rudder installed off the bat) and will be rigging that up soon. I decided to go with a crate. I shore fish as well, but the YakAttack BlackPak can hold several of my 3700 size boxes and I can fit a few more under the seat, so I should be good there. Like you said, they really engineered that boat nicely to have a ton of room.
Hi, the cords themselves are waterproof but of course the connection points aren’t so you should use some putty or something to seal the hole in the box. The battery is sold separately from the sonar unit. The box is just a regular waterproof box I got at either Amazon or Walmart, and I put a sponge still in its wrapper in the bottom to hold the battery in place, then drilled a hole in the box for the cord to come out.
How much did this fish finder and transducer cost you? I love the simplicity of it. I just bought a perception outlaw 11.5 and can do a ram mount up front and go through a scupper hole but I don’t want to run a ton of wire. I can place my battery under my seat and the rail is right beside my seat
Does the transducer arm move at all? Curious to know if you have to be extra cautious in shallow water to make sure it doesn’t drag the bottom, or completely catch the bottom and break the arm
Nice vid. Why do some people just put their transducer in the hull caked with putty around it? Could you have done this and would it make it easier to keep the cables in the hull?
Will Chu yes I could have! Two main reasons I didn’t: It would have been more hassle to move it back and forth between the kayak and the Jon boat we also have. Also, in-hull installation doesn’t give you accurate water temps-at least not for over an hour.
Looks awesome! Knowing how to use a little more basic equipment is way better than not knowing how to use super advanced equipment! My buddy has the same fish finder and looooooves it 👍👍 great video and diy!
Would love to see a close up of how you fit the Striker 4 transducer to the Scotty transducer arm. I just bought a Striker 4+ and maybe I’m dense, but struggling to fit it.
Jamisson Hiffner not dense! I used this platform mount which the Garmin screws onto, then connect the mount to the transducer arm. It does seem like this should be easier to achieve without having to buy several items, but this is how I had to do it. www.amazon.com/Scotty-368-Universal-Sounder-Mount/dp/B00FPQZ95K/ref=as_li_ss_tl?crid=3NX2JYWUQ5Y4Z&keywords=scotty+universal+fishfinder+mount+368&qid=1554415203&s=gateway&sprefix=scotty+un,aps,129&sr=8-1&linkCode=sl1&tag=fishingfamily-20&linkId=1a2637c1e300bde215d6e4302fa0b552&language=en_US
Does the transducer need to be in the water? Ive seen some people use duct seal and put it in the hull and ive seen some folks use an arm like you did, so its in the water. Your thoughts? For me the hull design would be easier and cheaper, but i want to make sure that would work too.
I personally wanted to be sure I got accurate water temps, so that's why I put it in the water. I did do the in-hull transducer thing but it took like an hour to get a stable water temp reading and even then I was not really confident in it.
Oh no, not at all--the hole sits on the top of the gunwale, where it's mostly flat and facing up toward the sky. I also drilled as small a hole as possible AND used a rubber gasket as a stopper around the cord.
Hi! Please help!! I am installing this exact set up on my kayak, can you please show me how you attached the transducer to the transducer arm, it clearly does not fit, but it looks like you may have figured it out with a few washers to make up the empty space??? please advise!!!

Hey Bryan, that’s a good question; I’d say your best bet would be to just mount PVC or rod holders to a milk crate & bungee it into the rear tankwell behind you. Very few people are lightweight & balanced enough to stand in a kayak like this so just make sure your holders are within easy reach from a seated position :) You’d only have to add 2 so I think that’s totally doable.
@@TheFishingMommy Cynthia that exactly what I do. I have 2 built in rod holders and then I have 3 pvc pipes attached to the back of my milk crate. Works great!

+Concord Roofer hey Ken, thanks for the question! You know what, to be completely honest I did not paddle enough with the Lifetime paddle to say honestly whether it’s junk or not. I bought the Bending Branches paddle because all my research told me to, and because I was paranoid about causing a tennis elbow flare up. I’ve got NO complaints with the paddle I purchased! That said... If I had it to do again, I’d probably just use the included Lifetime paddle (or in your case, try out both that one & the Atwood for at least a few hours each) until & unless I started experiencing problems with it. Paddles are pricy! Thanks for the question, hope this helped!
@@TheFishingMommy THANKS for taking your time to respond. I think your right. After viewing Headwaters Kayak review of ""5 kayaks under 500" and his interview on paddles with "out west with chris" Im convinced. I was in a tamarack awhile ago and it felt like a sled lol....but that was with the factory paddle. I might check with Headwaters next time im in Lodi and maybe they will let me rent or borrow one to try side by side. Regards and happy family paddling....Ken CA Delta
+Concord Roofer oh you’re so lucky to be near Headwaters! I really enjoy their videos, such a source of great info. In fact they not only recommended my specific paddle to me, but they shipped it all the way to me in NY! 👍🏼
Thanks for posting this very practical video. I just got the same kayak and the same Garmin device you have. After watching your video I ordered the Scotty track, transducer and sounding mount. Its a little extra investment but I think will make everything so much more practical. Some posted about the arm not being able to come all the way up. Is that an issue for you? Are you often having to completely take the arm off and on for transport and getting in and out, etc? Thanks again!
Happy it was helpful for you! I haven't had a problem with the arm not fully extending or retracting...but in full disclosure, I did actually lose the hardware that came with the transducer arm, so I had to improvise, LOL. I now use two zip ties to hold the two arm pieces together. It works great and I can easily adjust the height how I want it, and it stays where I put it but if I run into any obstruction it easily retracts upward. I actually think the zip ties are even better than the wing nut! I don't have to take the arm off to enter or exit the kayak--I can just swing it all the way up. I do put my Garmin on the left side and enter from the right, if that makes any difference. Thanks again!!
Where did you order the where you got your fishfinder on and your transducer arm I live in Vermont and I’m having a hell of a time trying to locate one I bought a kayak at tractor supply
I ordered these items from your Amazon list, but the garmin striker 4 doesn't mount to the universal adapter I ordered. Was there something else im missing? Please advise, ty
Hi there, that’s pretty strange; mine does! You have to sort of move it around a bunch to find the holes that line up, and there’s a “foot” that comes with the Striker as well. You can see how it goes together at 6:23. Does that help?
Good clean install! Your yak is very similar to my previous kayak. I had a Lifetime Weber 120. Served me well. One thing to note.... I preferred using a much longer paddle in the Native Slayer. I have a 260. Mainly because the Native is MUCH wider than my old kayak and I'm also much higher off the water on the raised seat. So my old paddle felt a little short. oh and I also like to stand up and paddle at times. I know... but I have a PEDDLE drive.... well in these shallow Florida lakes, you can't always use a drive (Such as at Fellsmere - in all that hydrilla), so I do paddle at times.
+Old Lady Angler great tips, thank you! That makes sense about the longer paddle; I’ll also check out how much work it is to paddle each of the big boats I try...I know it’s going to be a lot harder!
@@TheFishingMommy Yep it's definitely a different animal to paddle, but very doable. I do close to 10 miles at Fellsmere and sometimes 80% is paddling. But on most other lakes, really I only use the paddle when I'm launching thru shallow water.
Old Lady Angler to be really honest I think if we ever moved to FL I’d very likely do a lot less freshwater fishing. I think I’d use the kayak much more for inshore salt...regardless, I’d need to paddle over oysters, through seagrass, and shallow entries, so the same basic requirements as in a lake!
Daniel Sepulveda me too! 😀 I still use it as a grab n go even though I bought a Hobie last spring. The Lifetime is also great for fly fishing because there’s nothing to get your fly line tangled up in, according to my husband.
Scotty and Yack Attack make specific hardware for mounting the Scotty slide track to the boat. Scotty uses a rubber grommet which goes into the boat. You'll need ro drill a 3/8" hole for each grommet if you use The Scotty screws and grommets. 3/8 × 8 plus holes; to me those holes are HUGE. I chose to go with the Yak attack rivet system which required 3/16" holes (much smaller holes). I also used a some waterproof silicone under the scotty plate and around the rivets. Good luck and happy fishing.
This is awesome! That trac on your kayak did you have to install it? I have a lifetime fishing kayak just got it. And I want fish finder just don’t have that trac on mine! I was just wondering where to get that trac and transducer mount
Thanks! The transducer mount I used is linked in the description and it’s held up great! I switch it between kayaks & even onto our jon boat. There’s a link in the description for it; it was kinda hard to track down exactly what I needed, but once I did, the two parts go together quite easily.
I’d be very careful modifying it; this is a fantastic budget yak but if you’re bumping up against the weight limit, it’s going to get less stable & reliable with every pound added to it. And every mod changes the weight distribution or center of gravity, potentially.
Hey Jonathan thanks for watching! I think I ordered that box on Amazon but I’ve seen them at Bass Pro and at Dick’s before too. I believe the link to the exact one is in the description?
I have no idea how to answer that? If you have Amazon there, you can follow the links in the description to see prices for the various components I used. Thanks!
Ok lady I fw your video, but the title is misleading. You should’ve named it kayak mods or sum shit. I’m deadass trying to figure out how to install this stupid fish finder and none of the videos are helping what’s so ever..
Oh no! Haha, sorry to hear that! Well let me try to help! What are the problems you’re having? Like, what part of the process is screwing you up? The connections between the transducer & head unit? The mounting onto various components? The actual affixing to your kayak? Positioning? (Ps my own transducer was pointed backwards at one point in this video 😭)

So that’s called a Scotty trac
@@joshfarris5593 is that so???
Where did you order the where you got your fishfinder on and your transducer arm I live in Vermont and I’m having a hell of a time trying to locate one I bought a kayak at tractor supply
Hi Rodney, I bought mine on Amazon!
Great video! Thanks. I have the same setup. Looking to get the Garmin striker soon :)
+2 Weeks Up North awesome! Hope this was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!
Does the Garmin Striker 4 come with a battery?
Rory Oliver no, batteries are separate. Not sure any fishfinders come with a battery, actually.
What size battery did you use for fishfinder?
Just a regular 12v battery. But I have since upgraded to a 10ah Nocqua.
@@TheFishingMommy HOA to you like the new battery set up
The transducer don't fit the scotty mount. How'd you get it to fit ? Did you use plastic washers?
Yes, I used a few rubber gaskets I bought in a multi pack for like $3!
@@TheFishingMommy gotcha! too bad ya'll aren't living here now! I'd love to tag along on your saltwater adventures!
Old Lady Angler oh man that would be so much fun!! Maybe I’d tag along on your KBF adventures too 😀
I have that Kayak :)
Daniel Sepulveda me too! 😀 I still use it as a grab n go even though I bought a Hobie last spring. The Lifetime is also great for fly fishing because there’s nothing to get your fly line tangled up in, according to my husband.
how did you attach the transducer to the arm? Did you have to use rubber washers?
Yes, I bought just a variety pack of rubber washers at the hardware store for like $3 & experimented until I found what worked.
@@TheFishingMommy just did the same. Thank you. Does it work well on the kayak?
@@p374376 yep works great! I actually don’t use this kayak much anymore but it transferred seamlessly to my new one.
The Fishing Family What size of screws you use? Please answer back
Scotty and Yack Attack make specific hardware for mounting the Scotty slide track to the boat.
Where did you get the battery box
Amazon! Here’s a link Outdoor Products Watertight Box www.amazon.com/dp/B001AZNAWY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_GN3LFb95JAFP7
What kind of battery are you using?? And thank you for the helpful video
I was using a regular 12 volt at the time. I’ve since switched to a Nocqua system.
Thank you so much!!!!
The track is the Scotty low profile gear track which can be found on Amazon too: Scotty #440-BK Low Profile Track www.amazon.com/dp/B01I0V9E7U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_RZPBSHS4WW6H0AC6D22J

I'm not seeing the link for the seat. I have the same yak and my backside kills me two hours in.

I do believe your transducer on backwards!
nice lady fishing kayak. Install a sun shade....don't get sun burn
where’s the fun in that??
Awesome! Let me ask...what battery are you using?
Thanks! At this time I was just using a regular 12v battery. I’ve since upgraded both my kayak and my battery setup so now I use a Nocqua 10ah.
What battery do you have and how do you charge it?
Sorry for late reply; I have a standard 12V battery from Amazon, I think the link is in the description? It comes with a little charger that plugs into the wall and you connect it to the hubs. Sort of like tiny jumper cables :)
@@TheFishingMommy that's ok I have one now. Thanks for responding.
Does the hull get water in side?
Nope!
I’m not seeing the link for the transducer arm or the mount both would be appreciated!

www.amazon.com/Scotty-Kayak-Transducer-Mounting-Gear-Head/dp/B0174X6T5A
Where did you get the transducer arm?
There’s a link in the description for it; it was kinda hard to track down exactly what I needed, but once I did, the two parts go together quite easily.
How you got the track mounts on the side?
I'm concerned about the weight limit with mine. I'm 259LB and weight limit is supposedly 275 and I want to mod it
I’d be very careful modifying it; this is a fantastic budget yak but if you’re bumping up against the weight limit, it’s going to get less stable & reliable with every pound added to it. And every mod changes the weight distribution or center of gravity, potentially.
Can't find the link to the seat please?
They recommend having the transducer half in half out of the water . No bubbles...on the screen that way. Just saying
Nice video. Suggest you attach your whistle to your life jacket so it's on you when you need it.
Yep great suggestion! I did do that since this video was shot. Thanks so much for watching & commenting!
Great advice & I did!
Excellent suggestion & I did. Sorry I missed your comment!
Your battery box looks like a perfect fit. Where did you get that? Great video!!

How much price in bahrain BD
I have no idea how to answer that? If you have Amazon there, you can follow the links in the description to see prices for the various components I used. Thanks!

Glad it was helpful!
Ma’am, your transducer is installed backwards.
Haha yep it was!
Music is too loud, can't hear you
Drop the background music
Too late!
