- The Sherman Firefly in War Thunder has one of the highest penetrating rounds for its battle rating. This British Tank is iconic in appearance and it’s effectiveness against enemy armoured vehicles.
The Sherman VC houses a 17 Pounder Cannon which just barely fits in the turret. This gun can fire a solid shot projectile at almost 1000m/s and can punch through German Armour up to 190mm thick. This gives it the same penetration as a Panther but at only 4.7 BR.
However, the Firefly has some short comings and I go into great depths as to why this UK tank doesn’t really fit War Thunder Meta.
The Firefly FR Mk V is a formidable aircraft when it comes to ground striking. Close Air Support is such an important tool and with 16 RP-3 rockets and 4 Hispanos this British Plane can get the job done!
The Firefly FR isn’t a good turn fighter but it can be deadly in head ons and if ignored, can make short work of any enemy air with its 4 20mm cannons.

The Sherman Firefly was, in both World of Tanks first, and in War Thunder second, the first thing I ever ground for. The very first tank I looked at and told myself "this, I want to drive this thing". I played WoT first, endured the rank stinking grind and the mod-infested monkey model meta, eventually scored my Firefly, played it for a good while, then threw my hands in the air along with the table and quit the game entirely over how not-enough it was. Then I saw War Thunder and thought "hey, this seems like the perfect fix, this heroic underdog tank is getting the proper treatment here". Then a strange case of deja vu happened, but I no longer had anywhere to go, so with WT I stuck.

It is a great tank, but I feel like it suffers from being c o m p r e s s e d into constantly fighting Panthers. When it fights panthers it's straight up worse than 76mm's since they both can only pen the same place but 1 can kill the entire turret and the other the commander, gunner, and maybe the breach. Same with the Tiger.
For me, the tank I rushed was the M18 because I heard it was great, used it like a medium, lost all my credits, was unable to buy the 7 tanks I'd researched and then stopped playing for months until I found Phly and similar channels, which made me want to play again. Now I actually understand how to play, I find playing tanks like the Firefly alot more rewarding (Dopamine and SL wise) than other vehicles. Maybe it's just my playstyle of no flanking, into the center of combat on the ground and supporting my team with air cover and spotting once I get in my typhoon, but this tank and it's accompanying fighters just works in its correct BR, fighting Pz 4's that, while definitely better in most ways than it, have massive flat plates and close together crew that you want to shoot.
Morale of the story: Don't rush into playing games with the sole intent of getting 1 tank or 1 gun or 1 set of armour. Find a beginners guide to see whether the game is what you think it is or whether the playstyle you think you want to do is really the one your gonna get the most fun out of.
Also, if your still playing, maybe try grind a different tree instead of UK if it's not very fun. Each tree is surprisingly different gameplay wise, but they all have something to offer. If your finding the UK too slow, maybe try the USSR with its speedy T34's and above average heavies. If the Solid shot of the UK is the problem, try literally any of the other main 3 trees (USA, USSR again, Germany). All of them mainly use APHE that will kill on hit. If your want a point and click adventure with the only skill needed being angling hulls and checking corners, try Germany 5.3.

Firefly is also my least favourite Sherman, it has the worst armour for the BR other than the French Shermans, bad gun depression, it's less mobile than other Shermans as well, and it lacks a stabiliser which is so useful. Also it has less survivability because it only has 4 crew. Having said that, I do still like it just for the gun, although I'd take the avenger over it

It's gun is still decent in a full up-tier, it deletes tigers and panthers and can go through mantlet of a tiger 2 at 500m iirc, you just have to play it as a snipey sherman not a brawler sherman

I liked this video a lot im grinding to get the firefly plane right now, I haven’t been playing enough war thunder because if school and this taught me a few things keep up the good work!
I went into test drive the instant I was able to preview the Firefly, and it couldn't penetrate a Panther hull at almost any range despite the armor analysis saying it could. I even tried out the premium one that has all the ammunition unlocked, and none of them worked either. I mean obviously the Panther's weak spot is the turret which is why it's kind of a POS, but still. IT DEFINITELY is supposed to be able to shred a Panther at long range, at least with ONE of the ammo types! MSSGA!
Solid AP just sucks compared to APHE it needs a buff, there is no point of chosing solid shot compared to the other shells.
Solid shot mk8 can do it sometimes around 0-300m that's about it for now :(

Could it be when they nerfed the Cent Mk 1 into the ground by making the turret go from 152mm to only 127 because German 88s had trouble with it? Or when they took the Cent Mk 10 and Vickers to 7.7?
Or when they have consistently been shown that the turret of the Cromwell is 76mm, but they keep it at 64mm so the Wirbelwind can pen it.
Or when they keep the turret traverse of the Comet slower than it was IRL. Or when they refuse to reduce the gun bounce on the Comet, despite the British having fitted an additional shock absorber unit specifically to reduce that.
Or when they give the 2 Pounder - an accurate gun IRL - shot dispersion so bad, you can't use it pat 400 yards.
well the vickers mbt ( one of my favourite tanks ) is still extremely powerful in a 8.3 uptier due to its insane reload for the l7a3 and its ok topspeed plus good turret traverse and two plane stab.The Centurion mk 10 could be 7.3 , since its reload and turrettraverse is a big drawback , also t54 (1947/1949) has trouble piercing your ufp at range and its storage boxes and big turret allows for good anti bmp1 protection.The biggest issue with 6.7-7.7 british tanks is the ridicoulous repair none can afford (~ 40-50k sl for full linup repair)

@@AG9229 plus the ridiculous repair costs for 7.0-7.7 British tanks. It's a huge turnoff for me from properly grinding British tanks like I did aviation. That and the leopard 1 with a 105mm L7A1 at the same BR as an early centurion with an 84mm. big brain gaijin.
A lot of aircraft that function as attackers are classified by the game as strike fighters, the TIS MA is as well, along with all the Me 410s - even the Mosquito with the 57mm is not considered an attacker, and the A-36 is an attacker just because the Americans called it one to get around their own rules.

I played the firefly FR for the past 2 month in ground BR... im surprised how well it handled.. yes its heavy but not like other heavy monoplane.. sometimes i also forgot its a heavy plane.. lol
@5:37 that's true, 8 times out of 10 in a shooting range episode the targets are british, the only ground attacker thay have is the Wirraway which is not only a low tier aircraft but it's also a premium while things like the Fireflies, the Tempest Mk.V Vickers P and the Mosquito with the 57mm are considered strike fighters. HOW??? and WHY??? All things considered it seems like Gaijin really hates tea.

I would personally not recommend that tank or any of those british because they are a currently having the same issue that Odd had in this video with the jagds, the round pierces the armour and kill the driver but only him and keeps going without getting the the rest of the crew and modules. #makesolidshotgreatagain

I love the firefly. you should try out the Typhoon Vickers P. its hiding at 4.0 with 85mm of pen. Great CAS plane.

Gaijin's focus on APHE alone is pretty gross. There is a reason so many western powers used solid shot. It worked. But for no reason at all, solid shot in the game penetrates less than aphe, and/or has less post penetration dmg. Yet once apdsfs comes out it magically becomes good and can one shot things without filler.

Hey Odd, thanks, you've gotten me into the planes in TRB.I would love if you would do a CAS tutorial for newbies like me. Like how do you control your plane while looking around? I only have the freelook button set up, and I look around with my mouse, which is the same way I control my flight.
Press and hold C to look around in free look. Then just use WASD. I recommend binding the elevator pitch to seperate buttons so you can still control your aircraft. (I use my 2 mouse buttons for max elevator up and max down).
Will your intros ever stop being excellent? Because I'm not convinced they ever will.

Next video idea: Pz35t has shell with no tracer filling and allows for some pretty sneaky kills, even in higher BR lineups. There is something evil about playing with enemy team in this way.
Britain was my first nation, I got up to the Firefly, spaded it and even got a talisman on it... and I was still completely underwhelmed and got stomped by Germany forever.

Call me controversial but I absolutely love the firefly, able to rack up aces really easy in it and I’m not even an exceptional player. I like to play it as a kinda ambush/ sniper tank, out on the flanks being the first one to shoot, just laughing at enemy armour with 190mm pen.
Although the firefly takes second place to the avenger in this role for me, all time favourite tank. Both critically underrated and misunderstood tanks imo.

It's not the gun that makes it heavy. That Firefly is based on the Sherman V, hence the name of Vc, and it used the extremely heavy and huge Chrysler Multibank engine (which necessitated the tank being stretched to fit it in), which made the Sherman V about 5 tons heavier than the M4 model Sherman. You will note that the premium Sherman Ic Firefly is much faster and more mobile.

Low/mid tier British are fun! I managed to get 7 kills with the crusader mk3 on a single spawn breaking the record of 6 kills held by the m-18 hellcat
The Crusaders are some of the very few excellent vehicles in the British tree.
Historically, they managed to shove the 17 pounder in the regular 75 mm Sherman’s turret, just by turning the breech sideways.

I was playing with a 17 pounder and shot a pz 2 c from 50 m away in the side and bounced off a 90 degree angle of a track
Thats exactly what happens when I shoot Hetzers with the M4A4 SA50, 200mm pen shell stopped by 1 guy.

OddBawz you should play the British 7.7 lineup the falcon,vickers mbt, centurion mk 10, and the Conqueror Mk 2 and the Sea hawk. OddBawz it is one of the most fun lineup because you have a stabilizer and everybody else doesn't please try it out.
I remember being delighted when I researched and bought the Sherman Firefly... Only to spend the following days being swatted off the map! Better now as it is largely spaded, but still a marmite tank to play.

I find this video so odd, because I love my firefly tank, use it to grind SL cos I’m free to play. And I absolutely hated the plane but Odd has the complete opposite opinion.
I completely agree with you, Gaijin has this really weird hate fetish for the British and it doesn't make sense.
Solid shot is nothing like it was in reality for pen and the shrapnel effect too.
The British didn't bother investing in HE as the solid shot they were using had effective shrapnel to deal with tanks that HE was pointless.
The issue is the fact Britain relies on their solid shot, so it's a massive disadvantage and annoyance when it's not correct.
I guess it's not the big 3 lol

Hi Oddbawz, could you maybe make a video about the god line up with China at 5.7? I like to take the ZSD instead of the T34 AA, but it´s still strong. The lineup just combines very good Russian vehicles and the M18 + very potent AAs. Would enjoy it!

The Wyvern is similar but it's an entirely different plane.

To me the firefly is probably my favorite sherman because unlike you, I almost always see tigers at 4.7, don't mind taking multiple shots, and its the tank that kinda got me into tank games. I do understand why people don't like it and thats fair, but to me the firefly is always going to be my no.1.

Solid shot damage output drops significantly once the pierced armor is near the max. penetration of the round, courtesy of Gaijin.
Might still get a lot of fragments but they do almost nothing to crew or modules..
