Before I ever got my cheap 2006 Bentley Continental Flying Spur it had been through some terrible things. It came out of Florida, it was only $12,000, and all it needed was keys or the immobilizer replaced with one from a Cayenne... it turns out the keys work perfectly but there are so many problems, fire, hacked up wiring harnesses, missing parts, and possibly a broken steering column. A previous mechanic had replaced the steering column module after it was sold at Copart and they found out they couldn't program the module. They took it to Bentley where they found out that the module couldn't be programmed to the car unless the wiring harness was repaired and with all of the cut up wires and issues we found they wouldn't even try to repair it. Now I know that even if I fix the harness, the car won't run since the column module was replaced.

New harness, new computer with a VERY high bill is code for piss off.
I have had PLENTY of cars I have repaired in which their diagnosis was complete rubbish. My favorite was a Ford Taurus shorting out the 5v ref system intermittently. They claimed it needed a PCM. I found the issue in 15 minutes. The harness was rubbing through a valve cover stud and shorting out on the 5v reference wire🤣. Literally had it fixed in another 30 minutes and it was good to go for no parts cost.

@@RexerYTRexer There could be a short anywhere in that harness, and there's a ton of common splice points in it that can go bad... if he had a shop he could pull the full interior out and start tracing it all out but it'd likely take weeks and be really repetitive content at that point. The original owner that swapped the column and dumped it ruined the chances of anyone DIY'ing it as well since the original EEPROM probably could have been swapped to the replacement column, negating the need to remarry every component in the start circuit.

I have fixed wiring issues multiple times that were misdiagnosed by multiple different dealers. The key is to have wiring diagrams, connector views, splice locations, and pinouts available to you. For example, Ford: I can buy a 2 day subscription giving me all of this information for $20. Same example, Ford offers a service in which I can remote in with my j2534 and a laptop and program modules, relearn trans shift solenoids, program keys, Exc. This runs $50 for 2 days unlimited.
I have never worked on, or even seen a Bentley in person. BUT, that information similar to Ford is available through Er win after a quick internet search. It would just take a specialist or a knowledgeable person to spend plenty of time to figure out Bentleys particular system.
JR, its not worth it to him to spend weeks or months on this car. Punt it off and move on.

Knowing someone who worked at Crewe the wiring loom is not bespoke for each car. Bentley had the looms for each car on the line in big boxes to go into each bare shell, the first thing to go in the car. They had to heat up the main loom to actually fit in the cars, so it would bend into place. As you said each car has different modules for the loom to connect to. To accommodate this there were additional attachments that connected the main loom, like electrical tails. The only thing bespoke about Bentleys is the interior. Bespoke bodies and engines went out with the end of Rolls Royce at Crewe. Each new Bentley built at Crewe has a build schedule with everything that goes in to the car so they know exactly what loom setup is in each car.

What I learned from JR; You can do half ass repairs on a BMW but you can't do half ass repairs on a Bentley. (Not JR specifically-just folks in general) The only issue I have with Bentley and their anti-theft system is a Black Hat tech savvy car thief or thieves will find a way to steal a Bentley. It's too bad the previous owners totally effed up the security system (CASS) which ruined the ignition system. It's a serious reality check for anyone with the financial resources to buy a new or used Bentley and or Rolls Royce to do their due diligence and make dam sure the previous owner or owners did any "mods or fixes to the car's ignition/security system.

I bought a 1976 Datsun 280Z in 1977…paid $5600. Had about 5k milled. Unfortunately I discovered that after driving just 15-20 mikes, or some other drinking conditions the car would loose power, mis-fire and the tachometer would begin bouncing from actual revs to redline event few seconds. That’s why it was on the used car section at a Ford dealership!
I worked at an aerospace company while in college so I borrowed a multi-meter and invested in a shop manual.
Low and behold I, over time, traced it to a bad set of “points” in the distributor. The car has two, the second set kicking in to advance the spark…replaced it and all was fine! In my senior year I sold it to my roommate who drank too much whiskey and crashed it into a bus at my university!

I had a truck where the harness shorted out. It’s not even close to the complexity of a Bentley. But I bought a universal harness made for hot rods, gutted mine and wired back in the basic harness. It started, ran, had signals and all my accessories worked. Always wondered if a car like the Bentley could dump all the computers and put in a less complicated wiring harness.

Good thoughts. Just one part of the problem with changing so much would be how to smog check it. It's all integrated. OBD II cars are tested on a computer, and not the sniff and roll of the older cars.

All of which is why I absolutely hate newer vehicles. Oiled the door latches on my 2012 pickup, wouldn't start. No power to the dash, nothing. There is a switch in the latch that signals the door module which in turn signals a module behind the rear seat which then signals the etc etc...... It's beyond ridiculous.

  • @nickc7494
    @nickc7494 Год назад +1

Sorry to upset you but I think there is a hack to get it going.the modules are series so one break in the system causes lack of communication. I’d tear that car to the skeleton and look for a shorted wire. Remember a lil heat can melt wire insulation and pair 2 wires that shouldn’t be paired. When I was younger I worked at Chrysler Plymouth Dodge, I pulled out dashes and always came across a pinched or broken wire short to ground. Also with relays a little moisture will cause acid which break continuity. At least you broke even

So many cars go to waste sooner than they should because of the strangle hold of dealer only servicing. It's the same way with electronics sometimes. Apple is one of the worst offenders in that space. I work in computer repair and have to tell customers way too often that there's nothing I can do or it will cost more than it's worth to fix because of how it's designed.

I see a not too distant future where salvage yards will be filled with otherwise perfectly good vehicles EXCEPT for the fact that an electrical component has failed and there are no replacements or the replacements are $70k + like on this case. Also ie Tesla where the battery has failed = $$$$$$.

    • @supertouring1

If you're lucky to live near them, there are a handful of independent guys that could fix Teslas or replace the batteries for relatively affordable rates (when compared to what the factory charges).

    • @ckm-mkc

At some point it becomes worth it to reverse engineer the electronics. We are not at that point yet, but even "insanely complicated" cars are pretty simple compared to modern phones or laptops. And they pretty much all use Canbus, which is standard, easily decoded protocol.
The insanity of most cars is the fact that, other than Tesla, they use a million different individual simplistic low powered "computers" (actually microcontrollers) to run small tasks rather than one CPU and better software.... Basically a system designed by a mechanical engineer rather than a electronics/computer engineer....

My Dad started me working on his G.A. airplanes when I was 7) Anyway, We have a major problem here in Oklahoma EVERY spring. Everyone can't figure WHY they're summer vehicle that they parked under that old oak tree on the side of the house for the winter no longer will run !
When pop the hood and point to the many Rodent nest and absent wiring harness then, they understand why you don,t park vehicles off to the side and leave them for ANY period of time. In short, I am about the only person who can and will rebuild any wiring harness for a vehicle.

A sad ending to the bentley such a pity the wrong people came across it before it went to the dealer, I remember a while back in my country we used to have a company that specialised in rebuilding wiring harnesses they closed down due to a fire. maybe they could have saved that harness and you would just need 35k to have the modules coded with the secretkeys.

This one actually made me angry. I know it’s content and all the car-tubers have J&J as the emergency out now, but even still why would you ever buy this absolute trash at any price. VW takes German perfection from something like Mercedes, and then cocks up the simplest procedures to ruin any hope of ever repairing a car like this and turning it into effectively rubbish. Sure MB, Ferrari, Tesla etc all have their quirks… but a 65,000.00 wiring harness with a straight face, and that absurdly ridiculous startup security procedure is literally a middle finger. Then, had you actually gotten it running, it would be another thing and another and another and another. Typical VW. Glad J&J is making it go away.
