I'm doing my slow and steady research before starting my own capture project of VHS, 8mm and MiniDV. Have you found any rewinders for MiniDV? Everything I see and read is just to buy a lower priced miniDV camcorder. Also, do you use any upscalers in your capture processes?
@@EmeraldCoastDigitizing there is nothing like these in Australia and the ones on eBay from the States are roughly $150AUD or more including postage. Our exchange rate with USD is not good at the moment.
Ive started repairing my family's old Hi8 tapes and all of them have sticky tape syndrome. Ive been using a fine needle type tool to unstick it as I go. It is such a grueling long process.
@@EmeraldCoastDigitizing yea they can be. The amount of drop outs are annoying. That one actually didn’t have any drops after that. It was a prerecorded store bought tape. I suspect it had not been played in years. I have a pioneer ct-w606dr. Run that with izotope elements using AI, sometimes it’s hard to know it came from cassette! P.S. I worked at a machine room for many years at a few post houses in Ny! I’m pretty familiar with almost all formats, digibeta, hdcam, hdcam-sr
1. You don’t risk damaging or dirtying the workings of the camcorder. The right camcorder in working order can be hard to find now. 2. Rewinders are much more open than a camcorder. As he has done with VHS, you can mount the rewinder into a box and create a routing of the tape around other spare reels with alcohol to clean the whole tape length. 3. Rewinders are variably controllable, as the light dimmer switch here demonstrates.
That’s the big part. The sticky tape areas from the mold often ditty’s the heads. This tape actually ended up being the full length of the tape. Nearly two hrs. It played all the way through with no issues after this. But I have had plenty of start stop, clean, start, stop clean. Senerios. They Succkkkkkkk
Great channel, Sean. I'm in Australia and enjoy you sharing your knowledge. Thank you.
Thank you! I’m hoping to help. I also just have fun editing and slapping videos together
I saw a friend of mine a year or so ago do the same thing. He is frome Brazil. Great job!!!!
Great idea.
Glad you think so!
Will you be buying a rewinder?
@@EmeraldCoastDigitizing I have 4 of the same 8mm rewinders that you have
Those are the best made.
Great idea.
The obvious next step is to build an 8 mm. rewinder into a box with routing reels for cleaning the tape length. Do you accept this challenge? 😊
I don’t want to take apart my cherished 8mm rewinders they already have a cleaner on them!
@@EmeraldCoastDigitizing They do? Bonus!
Hey Dude, awesome content! My name is Celso, I´m from Brazil. Just found your channel. I'm very happy to see this type of content! Long live VHS! ;-)
Welcome aboard!

I do have one mini dv rewinder
Question i love your overhead light. Where do i purchase the light and stand?
That stand is Callled a c- stand or century stand. And the light is a Ameron bicolor led
Would love to get a rewinder that i could take the cover off, nothing available like that in Australia.
Why is it so hard

I see another invention coming down the pipe

Can you show us how you hooked up the dimmer please?
You just plug it in!
I just had a case where an audio cassette was hard and wouldn’t play. I manually rewinded it and then it played perfectly.
Audio cassettes are the worst

Will y’all be picking up a rewinder now???
I already have 2 of them that I found as new old stock last month at almost the only electronics component store in my area. 🤙
@@ObiWanBillKenobi hell yeah!
I came across a couple 8mm rewinders and I even have a 6mm DV rewinder. Mini DV rewinder was super hard to find.
Did you have to rewire the rewinder to add the dimmer? If not, how is it connected?
No it works fine as is! Just plugging it in worked for me
Glad you are trying it!
whats the benefit of using a rewinder compared to rewind the tape in a camcorder?

I can tell a lot about a tape based off how it behaves in the rewinders.
If it rewinds without issue I feel way more comfortable putting in player
What about the sticky part of the tape that clogs the head?
