Dear Mr. Colin, I came back to deeply thank you for this video because you saved me thousands of dollars by teaching me how to do this. I even found a technique to separating the sticky mold tape. I do it by hand (kind as if I'm threading - while wearing my covid mask, lol!). I have learned how the visual can be harmed by even having a bad casing. For some reason I have come to enjoy it and feel happy when my family finds a new uploaded video. This will be a great treat to display some of them on my parent's 50 year anniversary. So true!! I just started handling the very same problem of hi8 moulded tapes. Yes they snap exactly that way, and the described procedure is indeed crucial to be applied BEFORE trying to play them and convert them. I am currently building a similar “machine” to help me as I have around 20 hi8 cassettes to handle. Thank you SO MUCH for your video.

I too thank you for helping me transfer an old tape and I did some personal tinkering as well. I read on Wiki that methylated spirits causes mold to explode so I got a small piece of a A4 cartridge paper a dipped it into the metho then slid it parallel to the spool and onto the edge of the tape. Rotated it a few times and the mold vanished. I then fast forwarded the tape and rewound it to dry of any excess. No stick. You may frown but I hope not. Cheers.

Wow! I loved this video! Very instructive !! I have digitized and restored countless tapes 8 and hi8 of my collection but some moldy need yet to be recovered. Seen lots of tape with fold over but none yet with mould. Will keep my eyes open. I have one of those 8mm rewinders as well. Very handy units. I have a mini dv winder too.
What model is your miniDV rewinder? I had heard that some cheap units could damage tapes so was wary of them.
It is a maxell, and it was not expensive. Hundreds of tapes have been rewound on it, no damage to any.
Alas it seems that one was never sold in Europe.
Recently I modified an 8mm cassette shell to allow the back tension technique shown here by Colin, but while the reels are in the cassette shell. The whole exercise seems more controlled and manageable for me.
HI like the rig i had to do this in a lot bigger way i had some one inch tape i had to check before baking some ampex nab's don't like the heat so i had to move
tape to nab that were ok in the oven it's a pain and take a lot of time

Have old hi 8 handycam videos and some are like in a blue color not the true color I don't know how to remedy this as they are very old good memories of my grandchildren are they repairable? I don't see mold what caused this?
I was looking everywhere for this kind of DIY VHS spool cleaner with a Sapphire block, I still have several valuable VHS tape which cannot be clean using a winder/cleaner, I carefully wipe every inch of the tape manually spooling, which takes days for single tape, I was wondering if i make some spool machine with Sapphire block it would work wonder, will it be possible to get a sapphire block or buy an used TAPECHEK machine
When the tape has folded over I have passed it over an external smooth surface and wound through by hand. It may be that the 12 minutes of tape is all folded but it might not be. The tape now flat is unevenly wound and needs to be wound and rewound a few times. The playback may still be too damaged to have any value.
Hi Colin, it almost looks like someone tried to play the tape, it threaded around the head, locked up and a video head sliced the tape at a 45 degree angle. I had a similar failure in the early 1970s when I was trying to get my Cartrivision machine working. Fortunately it did not damage the head, adjusted the tension and I had the first color vtr in South Miami when I was 17.

Would the magnetic tip of the screwdriver degrade the magnetic information on the tape when using it as a pointer ? :D Or is it not magnetic?
Metal tape takes a large amount of energy to erase it. Even my huge degaussing machine, designed to video erase tapes, doesn't do much to metal tapes.

Is it possible to modify a small portable battery/dc audio cassette player (ie inserting a vaiable potentiometer for the speed) for HI8 spool rewinding? Or would i be wasting my time? Cheers
Do you have any experience with squealing ME tapes? I've got two or three of them that are pretty bad, all Bauer branded I think.
Hi, I have an issue with a MiniDV tape that has some residue that isn't mould. What ever machine I play it in, the heads have to be cleaned. I've played the tape end to end and then run the cleaning tape, (cleaning tape fixes the machine) but I can't seem to get this weird stuff off the tape itself. Have you got any ideas? Cheers
At one time with MiniDV, lubricants in the tape formulation varied by manufacture. The difference between brands could sometimes cause head clogs. Back then, we went by the rule to always use the same brand tape in the camera and never mix brands. I would try several different players that may allow you to play the tape long enough without issues to capture it.
hi i have just found 2 long lost tapes of my dad only footage there might be its on 8mm tape has a little mould would it be worth trying see if work or would they most likely snap?plz any advice be good thanks
If there's any visible mould, they will almost certainly snap if you try to play them. Perhaps send a photo of them via email (on my website video99.co.uk) and I can advise more.
I had a question, I have a digital 8 Sony Handycam. DCR TRV250.
I have a brand new hi8 8mm tape and playback works when I rewind it. But older tapes that don't appear damaged won't have playback, it's just a blue screen. Other tapes with that that C message and little icon on the screen. How do I fix this issue? I'm trying to digitalize the tapes with a USB converter but it won't even play on the camcorder screen.
USB converters are horrible, so don't go down that route anyway. Note that the TRV-250 is one of the cheaper Digital8 camcorders which will not play analogue tapes, so that might be your problem. I have some 8mm tapes that are sticking so much that even slowly unreeling the tape by hand is causing it to break. Do you think soaking the reels in Hydrogen Peroxide would loosen the tape and make it easier to unspool?
I've never tried soaking the tapes, it would probably destroy them. There's knack to clearing mould by hand, it takes a lot of practice and patience. I must now have de-moulded about 200 Video8 tapes. I had to give up on precisely 1 tape.
Question, do you accept tapes by carrier? We have 2 tapes with mould on them and no one around where we live will touch them or have the equipment. The problem is we live in Canada. How much do you charge per tape?

Is there any chance you would post pictures of hos you put these motors together to make this tape cleaner? I'm clueless.
It's very dependant on what motor types you can get hold of. I think Philips V2000 video recorder reel motors are ideal because they run smoothly at a speed and torque which can be set with a normal DC power supply. But arranging the mounting of motors and how you connect tape reels to them, is fiddly and my solution isn't necessarily the best. If someone could design and 3D print spool holders for the common tape types, that would be good, but I don't have time.
great video. just a question, though, regarding mould. Is it possible to de-mould the tape without your machine? Can it work advancing the tape by hand? thanks. chris
Yes you can do it by hand, with lots of care and a huge amount of time. Before I built my machine, I used to do it by hand. You have to pull the tape taut to get the mould to peel off rather than snap the tape. But you will probably snap it sometimes, so you need splicing tape (not normal Sellotape).

I think the TVR-120E is one of the best for the job. But they can be expensive.
Thanks for the upload, this was amazing to watch. Is it at all possible to fix the flickering/glitch ? my tapes have no mold and don't stick but seems like they're worn out or something... the sound works but the pictures is pretty terrible. I had a look around for an answer but can't seem to find one except maybe the fact that tapes only last 10 to 15 years. If you know what i can do would be amazing, all the best thanks anyway!
Probably your player is at fault, but if that's proven OK then you may have an alignment error on the original recordings, I have a RUclips video on that subject too.
Hi, thank you for video! Do you know where I can find splicing kit for hi8 tapes? Also is there any rewinder which may help in my case. I tried to digitize old tapes, the one in camcorder worked fine, but any other from storage snaps in camcorder. I even tried to rewind manually one using pencil, it snapped too. Now my only option is to open tape and manually unstuck them from reel. I don't see any mold though, it was in the basement which is cold and dry with dehumidifier. Using your services will probably not work, I have over 20 tapes, probably too expensive.
Sometimes you can barely see any mould, but it's still enough to snap the tapes. Video8 splicing kit is very hard to find, the supplier of the splicing block I use has apparently gone bust. Splicing tape can be bought online, search for VHS splicing tape (it is fine for 8mm). There is a USA supplier here for example: www.tapecenter.com/splictapinby1.html
@@video99couk Thank you very much!!! Am I correct to assume that splicing tape should applied to the inner side of the tape? Also, do you think slight heating the tape may help, I think you mentioned this in one of the comments?
@@donqixot3243 It needs to be in the side of the tape which goes inwards when wound on the spools. Put it the other side and you could destroy the heads. Heating won't help at all. Mould and sticky-shed (for which baking is useful) are two very different problems. It's not unknown for a tape to suffer both, but the mould is the bigger problem for 8mm.

Very helpful and informative. I have a question... Could a UV sterilizing light destroy the mold without damaging the tape?
I don't know if UV might stop the mould from growing, but it wouldn't get it to "un-glue" itself from the tape. Anyway you would have a lot of trouble getting UV onto the back edge of the tape, you would have to break the spools apart. Alas I don't think that's a solution.
No. Never in a million years. Follow LunchmeatVHS's mold removal guide. UV lights only sanitize the air, not physical items.
hi good information. thanks, but my tape top flap will not laydown how can I get the top flap to go back into place so i can then insert it in my camcorder
There are "tracks" on either side of the front lid on the inside, where small plastic protrusions in the flap should follow. Sometimes these pop out of the track then it won't close properly. Just nudge them back in with a screwdriver.
Most camcorders will work with the whole flap assembly completely ripped off the cassette, but most bigger 8mm decks won't accept a tape like that, so it's not the preferred repair.

I don't know! I bought it via eBay some years ago. It was used in a VHS duplicating machine for splicing the leader tape on.
How much experimentation was necessary to arrive at that voltage for the winder?
Well it's a matter of finding what voltage would wind the tape but not snap it if the mould was glueing the tape up. The start of the tape may require 200mV, but by the end when the spools have a different amount of tape on them, that won't move the tape so it has to be increased to about 300mV. There is more to the process that I've showed in the video, it would have got a bit long and boring if I had shown it all, but when I run in a "high torque" mode with lots of load on the supply spool, I have to apply much more voltage on that motor. The way I handle each tape varies depending how mouldy it is. Some tapes I can clear in 20 minutes, some take 2 hours. I would love to make some kind of rig that could do this in a slightly more automated way.

Very informative video i would like to know the baking process for tapes sticking to video heads while playing i tried using rubbing alcohol but it's not useful
Tape baking works best for sticky-shed oxide formulation tapes like VHS, Beta etc. as well as audio tapes. However it can help a bit with sticky metal tapes such as 8mm. I usually start by trying 8 hours at 50C in a modified scientific oven, an incubator, or at a push an electric fan assisted domestic oven. If 8 hours doesn't do it, try 24 hours, right up to several days. I will do a short video about the process one day.

Can you confirm if the white substance is truly mold. Some searches on the internet suggest it could be a type of salt mineral white power leaching from the tape material?

Mr. Colin, I am trying to playback 8mm/Hi8/Video8 home videos and each and every tape is white/black fuzzy. There is NO picture, no sound (just white noise) and I am very concerned. I unfortunately don’t have the original camera so I’ve purchased 2 different used 8mm camcorders, both have the same result. The tapes visually look ok, but I am no professional. The videos are precious to me and I’m hoping they are not lost forever. Any suggestions?
Yes, you are probably trying to play later Digital8 recordings on an older analogue Video8 or Hi8 camcorder. You need a Digital8 player or camcorder for these tapes.
Ive been looking forever for someone to fix my tapes they are broke in half and moldy how much would you charge to fix my 8mm tapes
Costs depend how bad they are, and I always do the transfers to video files too (not just repair tapes since repaired mouldy tapes can still be troublesome). Usually it's about £15 - £30 to de-mould a tape plus about £10-£15 to run to video files. I charge £5 per splice to correct any "Sellotape" bodged up joins, if there are any. Video splicing tape should be used. But it's hard to find these days. Normal sticky tape can be very damaging to the player, may even destroy the heads.
Hi Colin, I have disassembled an 8mm video tape and when I lifted the top part of the cassette up, the small plastic piece that you push to allow the tape flap to open flew out together with a small flat type of spring with a V shape in the centre. I have managed to re-locate the plastic piece but can't figure out how the spring fits. Any ideas? Thanks for your videos, they are a great help.
Would that be a Maxell tape? The spring is horrible on those. If you leave out the whole spring and door latch mechanism, nearly all 8mm decks will still play and eject the tape fine. A few decks though like the EV-S9000E, won't like a tape in that state.

@@tommytoytv3058 It depends what you will be playing it on. Most camcorders will play a tape with the door missing. Most bigger video decks will not.
I know this is a year ago but if you need to agian, just re-assmble the case withhout the spring. Then put the v point into the gap between the lever you push and the fixed case. then use a pin to push the V spring down into the gap, folding it in half and it will slide in until the ends click into place.
i once had a tape what i opend the lid on (where the player opens it to get the tape) it was an 8mm when i closed the lid it some how creased the tape to the point where if i would put it in a player it will be unplayable, so i just threw the tape out.
Quite a common problem. It can be caused by slack on the tape, but also can be caused by the lid's guide pins falling out of their tracks in the cassette shell. So the lid then doesn't line up properly when it closes and it will hit the tape. Exactly the same thing can happen with miniDV tapes too.

I'm from the u.s. and not sure what you charge in U.S. dollars for HG120 8mm tapes? I also do have a couple that have mold/fungus on them too. Do we pay before sending them or when you complete the process?
Say, I'd really appreciate some advice. I've had tapes that have been sat around for about 20 years. My camcorder was so old it wouldn't work so I bought another that was in good working order. When I tried to play my tapes, they were all unplayable. No mould or damage at all. The best luck I had was that on about 3 tapes, the first minute or two was in ok condition, then it would suddenly deteriorate into either bad condition or just like there was nothing on the tape. Is this salvageable??
Probably tape degradation. Put the tapes in a fan assisted electric oven or incubator at 50c for a day or two and try again. Also use a head cleaner for a few seconds on the player.

Since I've done this video on de-moulding 8mm tapes, I've been doing quite a lot of them. I'm not sure that's necessarily a good thing because it's hugely time consuming and the airborne mould is a hazard, but since no-one else seems to do it, I will! I did speak recently to an outfit in New Zealand who offer a similar service, and I suspect it's not their favourite job either. But anyway, yes I can handle 25 mouldy 8mm tapes, usually I can do about two per day, depending how bad they are. Contact me via video99.co.uk when you are ready.
video99.co.uk The tapes don’t appear to be mouldy, but my old 8mm camcorder only seems to play the tapes terribly. The picture is terrible and the audio isn’t the best.
I’d just need them all transferred to digital format. I just want to protect a load of memories.

If there's just a little bit of mould, you could do the same process by hand, pulling the mould off carefully and winding onto the opposite spool. Face mask required.

I've operated a video production company since 1990 in New Orleans, LA. I do a lot of transfer work and have a good recovery method for VHS and VHS-C tape. The 8mm and mini-DV tapes have always been a problem. I like your method for getting the tape freely moving. Do you have to clean the tape after this process?
Generally no, it will play properly once de-moulded like this. Sometimes I do have to bake a tape due to sticky-shed syndrome. This is much less likely to be required on metal 8mm tapes than with Beta, Umatic, VHS and especially SVHS which seems to degrade badly, but occasionally an 8mm tape will require baking.

@@VideoSpecialtiesLa I bake them for about 24 hours in a modified scientific oven (added fans) running at 50C. You can buy incubators online which do a similar job.
Hi sir. I have two minidv tapes and two of them got eaten by camcorder and I managed to get them out but I am sure some of the film is damaged. I was wondering can u repair them? It's precious moment of my few months old daughter and it was 10 years ago...I regretted that i put the tape in the defective camcorder. If you can repair and convert to digital file that would be great and how much are you going to charge for that kind of service. Thanks.

very clever---i appreciate---one negative---worry about breathing mold, but no protective gloves?---i understand that it is difficult to work with gloves
So long as I wash my hands after handing the tapes, I don't see the tiny amount of mould I can pick up as a hazard.
Have you found mould only forming on one side of the tape? I'm thinking it's how they are stored for decades.
Flat makes mould only on one side where as vertical tape storage gets both sides? Your thoughts?. Your method is the only way for for mould on both sides! I'm tony
Usually mould is on both top and bottom.
What is your opinion on crinkled tapes damaged by a jam?
Unless severe, a crinkled tape can usually still be played OK. However make sure no grease from the deck has been picked up on the tape since grease would cause big problems.

hello I have a cassette that was broken and every time I try to stick it it breaks again, notice that the tape is stuck to the edges how can you fix that there is any liquid that you can use?
That's mould then. It's not easy but if you take the tape out of the cassette, you can peel the tape off with great care and avoid it snapping. It takes practice and lots of time. I don't use any liquid but I've been told that water may be helpful, albeit too much water would certainly ruin the tape, so it may be a case of very gentle wetting of the top and bottom. You would need to break off the spool flanges to do that and then replace the spool later. I've never tried that though so don't blame me if it goes wrong.
You do not use water on mold spores. It will just re-activate them. Follow Lunchmeat VHS mold removal guide.
@@MrWolfSnack VHS mould removal is completely inappropriate for 8mm. VHS/Beta etc. tape is much thicker than 8mm/minidv. On the larger tapes, mould will peel off the spool, whereas on 8mm the tape will simply snap.

It's really non-trivial and I would dearly love to make a new machine with special features. It would consist of two of the V2000 motors, a variable power supply and some tape guides to sit inside the unrolling spool to assist the tape coming off the pack. But that would take weeks to build and perfect.
Are you sure that tape with fold-over is unplayable? I have a VHS-C cassette that was eaten by the VCR so about 10 minutes of it has fold-over. I opened the cassette up and manually unfolded the tape with my fingers using a pen and now the whole thing is playable.
The part that was folded over still has a crease that won't go away so the video plays a bit shaky giving it a fuzzy line at the bottom of the screen and rolling shutter every now and again. But you can actually see the video which is what matters, and it is watchable too. Maybe capturing it with a nice TBC or stablizing the image frame by frame in software would make it look even better.
But then again this is VHS-C and not video 8 so I don't know if this method would translate correctly.
VHSC and Video8 are very different formats. I've been unable to play foldover 8mm tapes like this. It might be worth a try if it were just a few cm, but it's dozens of meters and would take an age to unravel, for almost no chance of it working.
Hi Colin.....HEEELLPPPPPPP....... I tried unravelling my tape by hand but it still rips...It's taken me Weeks of frustration... I've been told there is a "baking" process to loosen this mould First...?? can you help. may I send pictures to you..
Baking doesn't help at all with mould, that's for a different problem called sticky-shed syndrome. De-moulding is a slow and skilled process, so you can see why I charge as much as £30 to de-mould a tape. Send me an email via my web site if you want me to work on it. However if you have already done a number of repairs using ordinary "Sellotape" rather than proper splicing tape then they will all need to be located and properly re-spliced, increasing cost considerably.
I have a big problem. I have a 8mm tape, but the mold is so bad that when I try to pull on it, it is so stuck on the spool that it shreds! It's as if the entire spool is glued together.
Yes that's a common problem. It can take a huge amount of care and patience to clear mould from a tape that bad. But in my years of de-moulding tapes, I've only had in one tape so stuck together that I had to give up on it.
Which material used for tap joined?
I use video splicing tape, but it's very hard to obtain these days.

@@FasalMusicAndVlog No, the glue seeps out and can damage video heads. Absolutely don't use normal sticky tape.

@@daMoMenTum It may be a little thick, but might do it. Also perhaps look for audio cassette splicing tape. Though too narrow really, it is very thin.
What about apply UV light (that used to kill viruses and bacterias on fridges)?
Won't help at all with mould which is glueing the tape together.
@@video99couk agree with you on that, but i've seen this technique in order to sanitize the tape. They clean the tape with ipa alcohol
How would I make myself a machine yours to help me demould tapes? Can you make me one and ship it to me?
My machine was cobbled together from various parts including motors from a Philips V2000 deck and a variable power supply. It was time consuming to build and it's non-trivial to use properly.
Found some old tapes with mould. Will try the manual way. 😴

I just refitted the MAxell spring in two tapes, what an annoying thing to do.
Two Maxell tapes? Very good, I've only once managed to get it right. Fortunately most players don't care if the spring is in there or not.
@@video99couk You need to hold the lever with your thumb and insert the spring with pincers, then close the case while still holding the lever and praying to all gods that the spring will go neatly into position without bending permanently.
The first one was a Data8 cleaning tape, the spring fell out, so I disassembled a regular Maxell to figure out how it goes, it fell out as well, so I went with trial and error.
Do you know what type of mould that is? Certain types of mold produce mycotoxins, a dangerous toxic by-product.
No I don't, so I treat with caution. I'm not sure anyone has done the research yet to find out what tape mould usually is.
I wonder why Tapechek never released a 8mm cleaner, probably because it's mainly a consumer format.
Possibly because when mouldy, they just snap so a TapeChek wouldn't help. The same would apply to some other formats such as DAT, and actually to some extent is true of BetacamSP and MII, where the tape is very thin.
@@video99couk How do you clean a 8mm tape when the mold spreads to the surface instead of the sides only?
@@rsuryase The same process initially, get the mould off the edges so that it doesn't snap. Generally I find that if it's spread to the surface too, it's only for the few cm of tape which is exposed where the tape has been left parked, so that bit can be spliced out and the rest will generally play OK. It's worth winding the tape from end to end a few times before starting the transfer process, and a 24 hour bake at 50C is also recommended.

I bet all or most my top 40 tapes from the 80’s and early 90’s are ruined by mould now, as they’ve been in a shoe box at the bottom of my wardrobe for christ knows how long and I haven’t looked at them properly for more than 20 years!!!!
If they have been stored in a dry wardrobe then they should be as good as the day they were recorded.
But your not really removing the mold are you. You're just breaking it's adhesiveness temporarily. Won't it stick again later?
No it won't stick again, and it generally comes off and becomes airborne. That's why I use an extract fan and wear a mask.

It takes practice and skill to de-mould an 8mm tape. I've been doing it for years and sometimes I find it hard going too. So far I've given up on exactly one of probably several hundred tapes.
Well now I know not to put my collection of tapes in the garage.
EDIT: yes i still use video cassettes to record stuff.
It's not always obvious to people that loft and garage storage is so bad for tapes.
It's too bad that no one can have access to your equipment to de mold tape.
Really it's just a couple of motors, lashed up spool holders and a bench power supply.

This video is worthless you have to have the machine to demould your tapes.
You can do it by hand, as I mention in the video. It just takes an age.
