I have a very old home, when we took down ceiling tiles underneath was wood with old newspapers pasted to the boards. I took some of the paper with date off carefully and saved them, we wrote what yr we bought the house and our names on a board with nothing on it. We put a new ceiling up, but we know what is under it. This house has been an adventure 😊 So much to do in the Smokey’s!

The best time to be at Cataloochee is around 3pm until dark. or dusk. The elk will start coming out of the woods on the back field. Past the Caldwell house. Some of the bull elk will gather around the Ranger's station and barn beside of it. and across the road of the ranger station. On my page, we went in Agust and the bull elk came out, on that back field crossing the blocked road back there...He was calling his cows...lol. It was amazing.

Loved this place!! We drove up a couple years ago in Oct and there was a hurricane that came up with us. Just a cat 1-2 wasn’t much. But we ended up driving out that way to miss the hurricane. It was such a beautiful drive . We went through a national forest starting with an N. Nahtal something. But we ended up in Cherokee and went over the mountains to Gatlinburg. We hit the rain and wind up on Newfound gap. Could t see much.
Anyway, that drive through North Carolina of the interstate was really beautiful. Maybe we will do that again and go and see this♥️♥️♥️

There are 2 hikes in Cataloochee I recommend and fairly easy. At the very end of the road where you have to turn around is the Rough Fork Trail, easy flat hike 1 mile to the Palmer House, another restored home in the valley. The Caldwell Fork trail and Boogerman Loop Trail that you passed on the way in, lots of big trees and it is easy to moderate but there was a couple log bridges washed out and you have to ford the creek but no big deal.

If you take the exit at waterville off i40 it goes all the way over the mountain it's like a hr drive thru the mountain. It comes out right into there .dont know if that's he way you guys went in you can go out up the paved way. To I think Maggie valley. I like it there I like going up at the porch of the house to eat and sit and watch the elk .
