If you're interested in learning more about how to make money online with music, I also made a tutorial about releasing music through the digital distributor Distrokid, which you can watch here: ruclips.net/video/Q4F2jtKBwSA/видео.html
This is extremely informative, more so than bigger channels that try to explain this process. I’m surprised this doesn’t have more views 🤯 thank you for the info!
THANK YOU! I also make anime and video game covers every now and then but I wasn't sure which ones I could monetize. This has been extremely useful though, subbed! :)
Vicki, this is absolutely wonderful information you shared. Thank you so much for posting this. Watching it made my day. I feel more prepared, especially because I make anime music myself! :)
Question: so if I have a song that did well but has no copyright claim, how do I go about getting permission for that one? I don’t know why content ID didn’t catch it
@@anaisdone I haven't quite figured that one out yet, but will let you know if I do. From what Taylor Davis told me, she was signed up with an MCN and though working with them I think she was able to get more content ID claims. I haven't worked through the youtube help centre yet, so potentially there is some way to get in touch with them to track down some content ID
I don't at the moment, as I haven't been monetised all that long. I'll keep it in mind for a future video idea though. So far I haven't made very much.
Thank you so much for this information! I’m trying to upload and monetize one video with many Disney songs acapellas. How would you do it? Same way? Thanks again!
I think it gets a little more complicated when there are many songs in the video. I'm not sure what I would do in this scenario. If it was me, I'd probably not monitise just to be on the safe side
Finally a real-world example. I haven't seen anyone do what you did here. But what about 3rd-party donations? I see that you have a patreon page. Is it legal to receive such donations if you have monetization turned off?
As far as I am aware yes it is legal to receive donations. But I don't think it would be okay if you were giving your Patreons downloads of cover songs unless you had purchased a mechanical licence for those downloads. But things like early access to RUclips videos should be no problem.
@@VickiBalfour Yeah, I've scanned several popular YT musicians and found out that many of them use patreon while not having the license. Thank universe Patreon exists
Thanks heaps! I teach piano cover songs step by step and a few have come up with Copyright due to the computer recognising the song as u mentioned but I wasn’t sure why it tells u the steps to remove the section of the song etc if there the only ones u can monetise once accepted into the programme ? In order to monetise all the other songs that say NONE what is the process especially the ones that are doing well? 😊
From my understanding, the option to remove the 'copyright' sections is so that you can monitise your video a) without having to share ad revenue with the copyright owner or b) safely montise videos that then contain no copyrighted content. However, this only really works if you remove all the music in the video, even the sections with no copyright claim. If you have copyrighted music in your video, even if there is no copyright claim, if you try to monitise it then you are at risk of copyright infringement. Some people do put ads on their music covers which have not had copyright claims, but this is not something I would risk doing myself. Music is rather more complex in copyright regards than some other forms of content on RUclips. This is just my understanding of things. The information provided from RUclips is sparse and not well explained. I hope this helps answer your question a little though.
Thanks so much for the info I really appreciate it so basically I need to aim to have every song recognised don’t cut the videos then share revenue and not monetise the songs that say NONE because if I try to monetise those songs and it gets picked up down the line I risk legal action, is that how u see it?
Is there any way to get youtube to rereview a video to get it picked up by the content ID system? (Wasnt picked up before but can likely be picked up if it was reviewed again at a later time).
If you have written your own song (melody and lyrics) then you can monetize it. If you have written your own lyrics but have used the melody from another song then you should not monitize it unless you have content ID. Does this help to answer your question?
It’s says here 1:35 (The use of any commercial sound recording, is not eligible for monetisation.) what does commercial sound mean ? Does it mean that popular songs that are available for purchase is not eligible for monetizing ?
This is a great video. Can you please confirm if I still have to take mechanical license by paying money? Or we can directly post and share that? Thanks❤
I think this is what my friend means, mechanical and synchronisation licence are given by the song writer or publisher to the cover maker to be able to monetize the song on audio or video platforms like RUclips. So he wants to know if you would still need these licence as other tutors recommend them. @@VickiBalfour
Hi I know that I’m late Idk if this was in the video or not but I was wondering what if I made a cover of a song using the original instrumental but I changed most of the lyrics? Could I get it monetized?
Really thank you for this great video! , but please i have aquestion :In this case, how will the profits be distributed among us? Will the profits be divided equally between us? Meaning that I will get 50% of the profits?
What is the criteria to get picked up from content ID? If you make a cover song more of yoir own version (slower speed, different key, more improv) does that mean you will basically not get recognized by content ID and you wont be montetized?
How much money did you get on some of your covers ? This is just a curious question and I know it’s different for each, but is there an average amount per 100-1,000 views? And how does this work for smaller channels who can’t be part of the RUclips partnership program? I have heard that if you get 50 things that say “copyright” or “copyright claim,” Your channel will get a strike. If you don’t notice, is there any source that might specify this? Also, thank you for this information in the video!

My channel is not eligible to be a RUclips partner yet, but some of the content is marked on RUclips studio as “copyright” and not “copyright claim”. Does it mean I’ll be able to monetize those videos once I’m a RUclips partner ?
I'm not 100% sure to be honest. RUclips studio has changed its interface since I last used it regularly, so I'm not sure if this might be the same as 'copyright claim'. If you have a read of the youtube documentation on the youtube info/terms and conditions etc pages you might be able to find the updated information on this

It means if im singing that is not cover song and it's mine so i could not monetized as you said your video should contain copyright claim content ID.

You would still need to make sure you were sharing ad revenue with the original artist as the melody/instrumental will be copyrighted
