I’m happy that I have most of the gear except the Foolography that you raved about. That tiny gadget is interesting. I agree, it is surprising it does not have the capability to control the shutter above 30s like Pluto Trigger. I’m glad getting the 20 mm f/1.8 S as my main Milky Way imaging lens based on your results. What a superb lens! Best of all, it is lightweight. Great for backpacking trips.
Amazing video, as always Hudson! Thank you so so much for keep sharing your knowledge and experiences in the field, so we can hone our craft and take it to the next level and refine it. This channel is truly a gem!
Great summary. Will have to check into the bulb ramping. I have the move shoot move with the laser and the optical polar scope. There is a great free app called polar clock, which gives the precise point for the polar scope to lock in a much more accurate north point for the tracker. The laser is really important to get an approximation when pointed through the polar scope, and then use the polar scope to lock in north. This allows you to shoot longer 50mm and 85mm with pinpoint stars. One issue in bulb ramping beyond 30 sec on the tracker is blurring the foreground. The Uber ultra setup would be 2 cameras.
Excellent! Thank you. I was wondering how well the Unleashed device would work. While varying the aperture might be necessary to get the range of EV needed for a full holy grail, doing so changes the field illumination and vignetting. You can see that in the St. Helen’s clip, and that sort of field illumination change is tough to even out in LRTimelapse, despite the deflickering. Better to shift just the Shutter and ISO. The TimeLapse+ View has a mode that doesn’t shift aperture, so all the frames are more consistent for ease of processing. Look forward to seeing more!

Really great presentation and jealous of the family time and that you were at Mt. St. Helen's. I am a Sony shooter and with the new 12-24 f/2.8 GM But does not matter because it is the tool and how it is used and you always have a new dream with study material. And hey, The fluid head is great at everything, a little lower on the pay scale I use the Manfrotto Befree with leveling center, you must have been the inspiration for it, the key is the rock hammock, thanks for the show and tell. Been doing the MW's since 2014 and the 1018 @ 12mm Full Frame lenses get so much better and like ON1 so does software. I know you know but putting a Radial tool around the MW for all its adjustments is a great learn and fast post. Can not wait to see long exposure on tracker and the blending of foreground and the NR in stacking!!! Watching every post!!!
Hey Hudson, great video as always. I use the Unleashed with my Z7 and I dig it. The main reason I got it is that there is no way to view the camera’s meter while doing a time lapse (if using the internal intervalometer). So, if I want to do a holy grail time lapse, I need to be able to see the meter to be able to know if I need to change the settings to adjust the exposure. With the Unleashed, I can see the meter, and even better, I can change the camera’s settings right from the Unleased app. Pretty neat! I haven’t tried the auto ramping yet but I’m looking forward to it. I’m really looking forward to your night sky course, especially if you’re going to dig into the software aspects as you said (the noise reduction for instance).
AS always, a great session. Thank you. Interesting comment you made about Photopills and the Milky Way actual position to the left of the AR view in Photopills. I had the same thing Thursday night. Set up w foreground interest (old church) and had the MW (supposedly) positioned to be directly with the steeple but as it became visible, it was to the left. And, yes, I was using AR view set to the time of the MW appearance, not the actual time I was setting up. I wasn't shooting time-lapse so it was no big deal for me to move my tripod and reframe but in the dark that is a little irksome.
@@DBest1966 thanks, I just rewatched the video on AR calibration. It was a good refresher and likely explains my situation. That said, when you arrive at a site at dusk (sun already out of view) on a moonless night, It is a bit difficult to do a visual calibration BEFORE the MW appears. Thanks again.
Hudson, thanks again for another greatly informative video. I am a huge fan and admit to being seriously influenced by your thoughts and suggestions when adding to my photography kit. I shoot with a Z7 and love my Z lenses - 14-30 f4, 28-70 f2.8, 85 f1.8 and I'm at the top of a waiting list for the 70-200 f2.8 which hopefully will be shipping at the end of August. I also have the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 which I use with my FTZ adapter. I'm very interested in adding the Z 20 f1.8 to my kit, especially for night sky photography. My question for you is this: With the Move Shoot Move or iOptron trackers using either the Pluto Trigger (which I have) or the Unleashed device you recently reviewed, is it possible to get results with my Z 14-30 which can approach what I would be able to get with a Z 20 f1.8 lens? With what I have paid out for my Z7 and Z lenses including what I'm about to spend on the 70-200 when it ships, I'm wondering how to justify purchasing the Z 20 f1.8. If the end results are fairly close, I'll probably will postpone adding the Z 20 until next year. Also, do you expect to continue using your Pluto Trigger now that you have the Unleashed device?
Two great questions. Yes, the 20mm is significantly better in backlit situations. I like it's sunstar too, not quite as much as the 20mm 1.8 F mount it replaces, but it's the nicest S lens sunstar yet. Wide open at F1.8 it has profoundly cleaner, sharper corners than the 14-30 at f5.6. It also has ZERO coma doing Milky Way work. It's the first lens I've used I can say that about. To use the 14, you really have to have a tracker set up just right with a very long exposure at f5.6. That's a lot less light than f1.8. Yep, the Pluto is so great for exposures longer than 30 seconds. You go to Bulb, set the time in app and forget it. The unleashed doesn't let you do that. The Pluto also opens up lightning photography.
Hi Hudson, I just got my Unleashed for D850 and Z6 two weeks ago and used it extensively for night photography. Two points: - you can set the Unleashed to bulb mode, but you have to turn it to bulb on the camera, then the control activates in the app - I had a sunrise timelapse ruined yesterday because the Autoramp somehow stopped ramping after a few minutes, it was still taking pictures but overexposing. Did you come across similar problems? My biggest minus on the Unleashed is the lack of a histogram
Oh yeah. The Unleashed actually says that at the bottom the moment you put the app in Bulb mode. It has a reminder that to use Bulb in the app, you need to activate Bulb on the camera. No it ran great for me. No such issues. That's a bummer. It's ramping mode looks at the histogram, but I agree it would be nice to look over it's shoulder in app. I keep Snapbridge connected alongside bringing the files in so that I can watch them there or in another app that supports histograms.
It's funny. their advertising kinda turned me off and I never looked at it again. The fact that after it launched I didn't hear anything else about it didn't help. I'll make a note to check on it, but Foolography and QDSLR have proven systems for it developed in conjunction with Gunther from LRTimelapse.
Have you looked into the Timelapse+ View for holy grail time lapses? It...is...awesome. Been using it for a few years with my Sony. Does automatic day to night timelapses, including ramping your interval so you can have a short one during the day and ramp it along with shutter speed into night.
I'm very curious about it. I'm in talks with Gunther to test the LR-Timelapse Pro 2.5 as soon as he can get me one. It doesn't do the ramping teh way the Plus does, but it cuts the dark time needed to adjust settings way down from the Timelapse+. It's great to hear you're loving it though. I'm going to keep an eye on it.
Seems like tha best star sharpness on the Z7 with the Tamron 24-70 G2 @2.8 was 8 seconds, 10 max for the slights trail in a star while at 12 seconds and higher easy to see the the stars trail off @3200 iso. 10 seconds on my Z6 with the kit 24-70s F4 seemed best while once you hit 15 seconds trailed off.
That's where that little move shoot move tracker I link in the description comes in. The shots I'm showing are all 90 seconds plus and iso 800 or less with the camera rotating with the earth to eliminate trails. You have to shut it off for the foreground and composite, since the earth blurs as the tracker turns, but $218 for this 2 pound device let's you open the night sky up. I'm a huge covert!

I have tried it and had some pretty funky connectivity issues with it on multiple cameras. It hasn't been reliable for me sadly. If it works for you, then it's great and yes. It also has Gunther's engine built in from LRTimelapse.
I have used dslrdashboard for years and for 10$ it does all that unleashed can plus more. Personaly I have used it with no problem on d750 and z6. D850 a nogo due to the implementation of wifi on this camera. On Z50 it works but at present no liveview. Nice tips. I have the Move-Shoot-Move rotator (slightly older version). Works well for a very small unit and relatively low cost. Can I ask... does the Unleashed device require a constant connection to your phone/tablet or will it run "on its own" if disconnected? I have a Timelapse+ View that is considerably larger, but runs completely on its own and has its own storage and battery (along with a small LCD and is a mini-computer). I like the very small size of this Unleashed unit.
I haven't tested that. I didn't want to risk messing it up. I know the phone is sending it the instructions, so my guess is that you can't take it out of range and expect it to keep making complex ramping decisions. It might be a good excuse to have a spare tablet or old phone dedicated to connect to it with and free up your own phone. Tablets are nice if you can take them, since they have such a large easy to read interface. I'm working on getting a tripod mounted tablet/phone holder for this stuff. ;-)
@@HudsonHenryPhoto Appreciate the reply and information. I just ordered one... they are on back-order at B&H, but are currently on sale (1/2 price direct from them in Germany), as a bonus! Even if the phone/tablet must remain connected, it still looks to be a nice setup. www.foolography.com/products/unleashed/
@csimet The Unleashed also works once the phone is out of range or disconnected. It just keeps running whatever has been set. Note that if you turn your camera off during the timelapse, it will continue where it left off when you turn it on again (it needs to be ended properly in the app, if you want to cancel it).
@@natashameissner Appreciated. I wonder if also does that while doing the bulb ramping. I'd assume it needs the phone/tablet to review the shots and make adjustments. Normal time lapse mode, while disconnected, would make sense, since nothing changes. I received mine and tested normal mode and you are correct... it continues to run when disconnected. I plan to test the bulb ramping as well... soon.
I have a Nikon 14-24 and don't have any problems because I very seldom shoot wide open. Usually nothing less than 3.5 and usually not less than f.8. Are you going to do anything with the Moon/Mars night sky on the 27th?
I'll watch the weather and see. I might. :-) Trust me, it pains me to consider selling the 14-24. It was my favorite lens for a decade and I've made more money with it than any other lens bar none, but... These days it seems big, heavy, filterless and sadly superfluous. I find the 20mm 1.8 a far better night sky optic. It's the best lens I've used by far for that. I will preorder the new 14-24 the moment it's released though. I can't wait to see if it tops the new 20. :-)

I plan to test the bulb ramping as well... soon.
Not sure about delivery to the US but Foolography have a 50% off deal running just now
I just ordered from their website. With Fed Ex delivery to the U.S. the total cost was $143.04 for the Z7 connector version.
Hope you offer an astro time-lapse course here in the PNW someday in the post-COVID-19 era...
That's a fun idea I've been thinking more about. It would probably be an astro class with time-lapsse as a component.

I tried getting moon/Mars photos, but no Mars. I did get some new moon photos.
