What if you had real superpowers like withstanding deadly cold temperatures and having almost unlimited energy, drive, or motivation? Wim Hof is a self-proclaimed daredevil, and his stunts like breaking world records in staying in an ice bath, climbing Mount Everest over the death zone in just shorts, and running a marathon in freezing temperatures barefooted and untrained made him famous. People believe he has superpowers. But it's not only him. His breathing method and cold exposure practice found millions of followers, and many of them performed similar stunts. People who experience similar superpowers from never getting sick anymore to extreme cold tolerance. People who found an unlimited source of energy and motivation or experience enlightenment-like states of mind with the breathing method. But you know all this. And you don't feel any superpowers. And today, I'm going to point out common mistakes why your superpowers are not awakening when doing the Wim Hof Method.
A little bit about myself: I'm Kitaro, a Movement, Kung Fu, and breathwork practitioner and teacher. I don't like fitness. Hey beautiful people, I forgot to mention the actual protocol of the Wim Hof Method for those who need a reminder:
    30-40 powerful inhales (hyperventilation-like breathing)
Breath retention on the exhale (empty lungs)
Recovery inhale and hold for 15 sec (full lungs)
Repeat for 4 to 5 rounds
PS: Don't forget to sign up for my newsletter to be ready when my short guided breathwork course launches 😉

Breath retention after a passive exhale. Wim insists on not forcefully exhaling completely before the breath retention. So, after the 30th inhale, let your lungs empty naturally, without forcing. Also, counting is there just to give us a reference, for our analytical minds. We should not fight the urge to breathe, but should allow the gradual and natural increase in lung capacity lead us. Patience and regular practice are the path leading to safe results.

Ive been doing wim hof breathing for a few months now. After 3 rounds i have experienced some powerful visions. Intense energy through my body. After the breath hold and inhale for 15 sec it feel like a blast of energy in my head then flows through my body and out from my toes its a exhilarating feeling. Aftrr the 3rd round ill lie there and look into my 3rd eye for 30 min or 45 min. Waiting for an awakening. This breathing method saved my life. I now feel at peace with myself 🙂🙂

Great, great explanations and information. Thank you, Kitaro! I started daily breathing when Covid hit and have done it every day for about 4 yrs. I’ve had the usual immune system improvements - almost no colds, all allergy symptoms went away, etc. But the most notable impact was with my meditation. It helped to open up my internal energy, which now flows with greater ease and control. This really is amazing. Each day, it does take some will to do it though - it’s strenuous and while it’s partly relaxing, it’s also partly unpleasant. I can imagine beginners failing to stick with it due to the effort and will required to make it a daily routine. But to me, it’s worth it. I have noticed that my breath holds have definitely plateaued. Maybe it’s my age of 51, but I typically max out at about 90 secs on my last hold. I think I need to put more effort into relaxing my body and easing in, as you explained. But it’s tough when time is rather limited, depending on the day.
Thank you again, you are a real inspiration.

Wow! This is really a game changer! I realized that I was doing my breathwork somewhat mechanically. Now I have been practicing it very mindfully for a few days and it became very different. I tune every breath to that particular moment. Sometimes I go slow, sometimes fast. Sometimes nose, sometimes mouth. I go not just by instruction, but by feeling. I listen to my body and mind and adjust accordingly. The experience is probably not as intense as it was in the beginning of my practice, but it's still very good. I am doing it now with curiosity, I dive fully into it. I feel like there is a room for improvement and I want to explore.
Thank you so much for giving new life to my(and probably many other people's) breathing practice! 😊
Everyone who feels that he/she is doing it wrong or that it doesn't work, please, just keep practicing! You have to master it, it's a long time affair. Listen to your feelings, apply advice from this or some other video, take a class with instructor(if it's possible for you).
And don't worry, don't stress yourself. You are doing it to minimize stress, not to amplify it. It's ok to make mistakes, if you acknowledge and correct them.
    Keep going!

I do start with warm water and then switch to cold at the end. In the summer months the water isn’t as cold, but we play with what we have.
Maybe one unrelated subject: I also do high intensity interval training (or a variation of it). I do 4x 100m sprints each spaced out by four minutes rest. I think you get some benefits from being kind of out breath here, but I suppose the main benefit is human growth hormone.

I was actually watching because I was curious if you viewed the "mistakes" that led to the method not working properly, the same as I did. .. I've realized that my state of mind preparation makes all the difference.. & commitment is the main issue.
If I have the option to use warm, my tolerance goes down. (unless I am in an extremely disciplined state at that moment).
I've done 1 year of straight cold showers outdoor with no warm option and never shivering...but have also been off and on with discipline since, & find that committing to the meditation part of the breathwork is what allows the state of being / mind to kick in for the tolerance / feeling of the cold dissipation .

I first tried Win Hof method breathing in January of this year, but it didn't become a true daily practice until about 3 months ago, and I have hardly skipped any days since then. A bit over 2 months ago I started introducing the cold showers, and it has now been just shy of 2 months since I last took even a lukewarm shower, I just open the cold water and nothing else for my entire shower, and I can't stress how much this plays a part in all of this. In those 3 months my wife and daughter have gotten sick several times, I haven't gotten even the hint of a sniffle. Even some of my allergies seem to have subsided.
I haven't done the full ice-water Immersion yet, but that would obviously be the next step.
I know (and fully respect, as everyone MUST) the rule of never doing this in water. But the past me that did freediving misses breath-holding underwater so much now, and every time I do the retentions I am reminded a bit of that time.

If you are able to learn to do zen meditation, it should help enormously. I did mushrooms years ago maybe 5 times, and loved it, but now meditation ("just sitting") turns out to be the essential thing for me. I started yoga plus meditating 3 decades ago. 4 years ago I added WH before, which is a great motivator for me to "sit". Before I started meditation I was still smoking weed. The meditation brought me a sensitivity that showed me how the weed effect was interfering with my energy. I would do it when skiing or bike riding but would notice I was less smooth physically and more socially awkward, the good feeling was superficial. So I just naturally stopped. Mushrooms did not interfere in that way as weed, but soon became unnecessary. For me sitting is the most direct path. To what? To feeling just basically good, just like I came home, like I am myself, appreciating things, being focused, being appropriate to the moment and to the person I am dealing with. Before that I will often be stressed and irritated and frustrated and vaguely tired. But if I sit 20-40 minutes, hours later I will notice that "oh, something changed after I sat, and I somehow got a lot done- wow!". The best way to start is with a group, even better with a real teacher, but I also recommend to listen to Suzuki Roshi's lectures and perhaps look at Brad Warner's books. Anything like martial arts or yoga can also help, as can intermittent fasting. Good luck on your path!

Well, that certainly made a difference. I tried following your breathing tips and laid down instead of doing it seated. On the 4th and final round on the exhale hold I fell completely asleep, and had a mundane dream like any other night. I woke up involuntarily shouting and thrashing, gasping for breath and could barely hear anything. Totally disoriented, it took me a moment realize I was lying in my own room. I had hit my hand on my chair while I was thrashing, the pain felt distant as if it was someone else's.
I think I will get a live teacher before diving deeper into breathwork. I would have taken further precautions had I known, I'm glad it wasn't my head that hit the chair.

I am sad to hear you have Graves but great to hear you are in the natural therapies already :)
Try and look into plant based diet and supplements especially higher doses of vitamin D as D is an immune modulator and tissue and DNA repair five star general.
Also you might check Izabella Wentz who deals with thyroid related issues. I've read her book just as a natural progression of my cancer research and was able to
help few of my friends who had Hashimotto just based on the book. One of the gold nuggets was that everybody with thyroid issues have problems with leaky gut which gets the non digested proteins, bacteria etc to end up in the bloodstream triggering a molecular mimicry mechanism where the body attacks the invader and itself because something on the invaders cell surface is similar to the thyroid gland and as immune system attacks the invader it also attacks the thyroid...
So, few strategies to be applied to heal the gut such as diet (no gluten, no dairy, no pork as it has a bacteria that can trigger mimicry autoimmunity, go strong on the plants), supplements, intermittent fasting, meditation, breathing and reboot the immune system so healing can start, Pharmacological solutions don't do the healing unfortunately.
I hope some of this make sense and that I tickled your imagination :)

Or Is there a deeper connection, like e.g. one should apply some of the breathing techniques while in the cold water? Or maybe even doing a full round of the breathing while doing an ice bath? (Of course with somebody else taking care)

    • @KitaroWaga

My advice would be don’t do cold exposure but do the breath work. Cold exposure is a stressor for the autonomic nervous system, and as you are already weakened, I would wait until you’re better again. Similarly, when you’re sick, it isn’t advisable to take ice baths, etc.
      I hope this helps.

I ended up having a full blown Kundalini awakening by keeping myself clean for a few months and then having a micro bump of Ketamine and a glass of red wine.

Great video, thank you. Do you know if there’s an ideal time to go from breathing to cold exposure? The quickest I can get into water from leaving the house is about 20 minutes as it’s a drive away, but sometimes I hike to a high up lake which takes an hour or 2. Just wondering if I’d be better doing the breathing on the lakeside (although I think I’d be too self conscious to do that!). The reason i ask is that at the moment I can get into the water easily, but I only started this method in April and haven’t experienced the much colder temperatures of winter (i live in the French alps) Thank you

Kitaro this was a very interesting and informative video. It leads me to believe I am doing something wrong as I have been doing the breathing method for 7 months and taking a 5 - 10 min cold shower every day for the same 7 months. I usually perform a guided session that I have on my phone from Wim that is 1:00, 1:30, 2:00, 2:30 or slightly more / less on the last round. I have noticed that sometimes I forget what breath I am on or even stop breathing like I am falling asleep. I also no longer feel the energy like I did at the very beginning. I do the exercises while lying down with a pillow. I any suggestions on how to improve are greatly appreciated.

    • @KitaroWaga
      @KitaroWaga  Год назад +3

Hey Adam, great to see your dedication. Falling asleep is a common case. Usually it's because the body needs it. But you could try avoiding the pillow and inhale more intensely earlier of your practice. This will usually make you more alert. Also, by keeping your breath retention phase fairly short (60 - 90s) you won't engage your parasympathetic nervous system too much to fall asleep.
Generally, you can also experiment with no guidance and no time measurements - just feel. This will give you more control and you learn to listen to your feelings.
      Hope this helps.

    • @Muskettisopuli
      @Muskettisopuli Год назад

To add something to Kitaro Waga's great response: Doing it in a sitting position, just like with any meditation, helps you staying awake. The time perception changes are normal, you're meant to give up the systematic guidance at some point and just focus on how you're feeling, not guidance, counting or time measure. That's the end goal.
Ps. you can increase the cold exposure benefits by going to actual ice water, but don't submerge your head, unless you really know what you're doing, and never do WHM in a water if you're not observed by someone (you should do it BEFORE the water, and then just go to water and take the coldness in, but not do the breath retention) and if you insist on holding your breath, you should always do it after INHALE and NEVER after exhale if you're in water. That keeps you awake and you'll much likely let go of the hold before passing out because of all the CO2 that's quickly gathering to your already inhaled lungs and throat. That's how the man himself does it and he is taking it to the absolute extreme, it's not necessary to go that far to get the health benefits or exciting experiences, it's more about consistency and you seem to be good at that.
      All the best.
