    Updates that include songs released after this video was made:
    3/29/2022 - 9 8 7 would go in “a slight groove”. This is a super chill song. Nothing wrong with it, but it feels more like background music rather than foreground.
    4/19/2022 - at the corner store is an Absolute Jam. Not to mention the music video being suuuuper cool. Big fan of this one!!! UPDATE 8/24/22 - This MIGHT be an Eternal Banger. I REALLY like this and I find myself humming the "hey that's pretty cool, tell that to the whole damn neighborhood, and all the people go: DAMN" part all the time. SOOOO good!!!
    5/10/2022 - "If the world doesn't end" has *the best* music video I've seen, yet. I really like all of the different scenes and lighting, and how it follows the song as it hops around from different feelings. Masterful visuals. The song itself however is sorta middle of the road for me. I would put it in low "a great tune". The ending is my favorite part (2:20-3:23) and the bridge/middle is my least favorite (1:45-2:20) (It reminds me a lot of the bridge of 987)
    5/31/2022 - I'm a huge gamer most of the time - I'm not particularly a fan of this one, actually! It feels a bit unorganized. I love the visuals but the actual "song" is just "Still good but not as good as others" for me. However, 2:02 to 2:27 is an absolute jam. That section is great! The rest of it feels a bit messy and it's just ok. I can really appreciate this one for being different, though. Some people complain about same-ness (not me), and this one is definitely different from the other post hiatus songs.
    6/21/22 - The Ground Plane - Cool song with a good vibe and good lyrics. A slight groove! Not much to say other than it's a little plain, maybe. Not "stand out" but not bad, at all.
    7/12/22 - meet me in september - Absolute jam!!! I love it! It's really nice. super cool instrumental that is really easy for me to follow without it feeling distracting or busy. I think it's really good. I like the little melodies sprinkled throughout this one, too!! The outro is really cute with the "doop doo mm doos"
    8/2/22 - I like to wear soft clothing - a slight groove overall. Super boring first minute with pretty much just one chord. 1:17 to 1:44 is really nice! I like it. the ending is dumb and the second chorus is not as coherent or nice as the first, in my opinion.
    8/23/22 - the ending - Super nice vibes. Makes me feel like it could be his last song for a while :( I hope that's no the case. As many others have pointed out, the modulations in this song are incredible. It's a super fun song to *actively* listen to. It's a bit harder to appreciate by just casually listening to it and trying to follow along. I dont really like the ending, either. This is probably "a great tune", for me. But it's close to "a slight groove".

    Bill Wurtz for me is a comfort musician. I recently went through one of the worst mental health periods I've ever experienced, and the only thing that would draw me out of it for just a moment was Bill's music. It was right around when Fly Around came out. When I listened to Fly Around for the first time it felt like a comforting blanket put around my body. I smiled for the first time in a month while listening to it. My depression didn't exist for a few minutes. Now while I'm out of that episode, I'm still depressed, and whenever Bill uploads something new, I find that solace again.
    I've enjoyed his music long before now, and I've felt depressed long before now too, but they haven't intersected like this until Fly Around. I appreciate Bill for making music that's goofy and/or directly uplifting, it's the only place I know I can go to for instant good vibes.

    • @FunkadelicPeach
      @FunkadelicPeach  2 года назад +4

      “Instant good vibes” is a great way to put it. I think his music certainly has a magical quality to it that I have yet to see matched by another musician/artist/animator. Seasons come and go but Wurtz is forever!!! I hope you found a similar happiness with watching this video and I hope you consider sticking around! :) have a great day!

    One of my favorites that wasn't mentioned here is "write a song on the count of 3", specifically the part that goes "if it makes you feel okay then i've done my job today", that scratches an itch in my brain like you wouldn't believe lol.
    Also, to me "at the airport terminal" sounds more like it's about the transition from one stage of life to the next than death in specific. Though death can definitely fit into how one relates to that reading as well.

  • @CountryMusic527
    @CountryMusic527 2 года назад +20

    First of all I have to tell you, fantastic job on the video. You put so much effort into it. I only knew a few Bill Wurtz songs before this, but of course knew him from "History of the entire world, i guess".
    So after watching your video, "la de da de da de da de day oh" and "fly around" are on repeat for me and I agree they deserve to be eternal bangers. I also really liked how uplifting the lyrics to "It's gonna be alright" are, as I am an optimist. I would probably have ranked it higher, but I think you mentioned you are only going by the music and not the lyrics. Some of the lyrics are really philosophical and I like to think of them as metaphors (as you mentioned when you were talking about "at the airport terminal." It's not just you, I do that with a lot of things I enjoy, I see them as metaphors for something bigger.
    Great job on the video and I can't wait to see more of your content, whatever type of video you decide to make.

    Bill’s music does some of my favorite things music can do. His melodies are so genuine and sweeping. The rhythms are endlessly interesting. And the whole package is funny not just for its lyrics but for how it constantly subverts expectations.

    There are so many older Bill Wurtz tunes that I think are some of the best that didn't make it on this list. Like "you're free to do whatever you want to", i can play, rabbit snakes, all u gotta do is, hey jodie foster, Do What You Want To Do, and plenty more.
    Btw, Bill Wurtz has his own website, which includes a list of every song he's released since 2005. There's also a 'questions' page where he's constantly answering questions from people. During his yearlong break he was still active on there, and very clear about why it was taking him so long to release a new song.

      Yeah man!! I love those website/RUclips songs. I mentioned quite a bit in this video how I enjoyed those and spent a lot of time on his questions page and his subreddit. I really appreciate you watching and leaving a comment. Please consider sharing the video if you want!! :)

    Huge bill wurtz fan here! This one suddenly pop out in my reccomendation. I've listened to all of his songs everyday while biking to school/work, and the tier list is pretty much accurate. Songs like 'just did a bad thing', 'La de da', 'long long journey', and ESPECIALLY 'might quit' really has a special place in my heart.
    I remember when "here comes the sun" came out and holy shit I screamed and stopped whatever I was doing and it was just a banger when I listened to it, easily peak bill wurtz content. Long wait was worth it!
    You should do a tier list to bill wurtz' underrated songs that are only available at his website (naming a few of them that slaps for me: write a song on the count of 3, I guess I've got to listen to Bob marley, all u need is love, no brains). Unsure why he didn't publish them on RUclips (these are probably his least favorites) but i feel like more people should listen to it.
    Bill wurtz is easily one of my most favorite artist of all time. Love your video man! Just earned a sub :)

    Also, the Verse of "More than a Dream" sounds SO much like Brian David Gilbert's "See the Day" - from the melody, to the key, to the 7/8 time signature - which I'd totally recommend checking out (as well as Brian David Gilbert's "Dances Moving!", the thing that it's from - practically a 22-minute musical comedy drama short film split up between 7 parts)

    Ok, this was a VERY well informed list, by someone who is just as invested as me, and also a musician. As it happens, it matches really well with my own preferences, for many of the same reasons you describe. However, I was so sad to see Outside not being an eternal banger, and Mt St Helens bla bla not being a strong absolute jam. I can't understand your thought process regarding Outside, especially since everything after "leaving on a different plane" might be some of the best and most enjoyable things Bill has ever done. But I respect your opinion on it, and commend you for the high quality list. I just need to let go of how someone so incredibly similar to me musically can't appreciate how much of a banger Outside is. It tears me apart inside :)

    Super awesome video, I loved hearing about your passion for Bill’s music since it feels so similar to mine. I found it super interesting to hear which parts were special to you in each song and comparing them to my own; for example, Slow Down is a personal favorite of mine, and for some reason the part of that one that always gets me in a groove is the “my hat is bent” part, whereas you really loved the “bobblin’ down” part. And I’m so so happy you put “Fly Around” so high on the list, that one feels so special to me in a way that’s a little hard to describe. It’s just got those perfect vibes, you know? That’s a song that I can always revisit and it never grows old; I’m a huge fan of that ending too so I’m glad you pointed that part out. I really like “Money” as well and I probably would put it higher on my list than you did, but I also would probably put “School” in Eternal Banger so maybe that gives an idea of the kind of groove I love. And I’m glad you’ve been updating a comment with your thoughts on the latest songs, I think I’d probably rank 9 8 7 and at the corner store the exact same way you did.

    A few thoughts:
    - "In California" and "We Could Just Get High" are two of my favorite pre-HOTEWIG Bill songs, especially the latter. The key changes are incredible, and the vocals are some of his most passionate to date, especially on the second and third choruses. It is bit corny I suppose, but it captures a specific mood and might be my most played on Spotify. "In California"... man, that fucking GROOVE. One of the best bass riffs ever written, period. Straight out of the 70s. The chorus has a crazy progression and the lyrics are simple but very effective to me. For me, these two are high Absolute Jams to low Eternal Bangers, but it's OK you feel differently for now :')
    - Two other favorites of mine are "Got To Know What's Going On" and "I'm A Princess". The former is actually my favorite Bill Wurtz song, and honestly it's hard for me to express how much this song means to me. He made it in It's a song you relate to at 3 am when you aren't feeling so great about life and yourself. It tells you there is more. "I'm A Princess" is essentially the part 2 to this song. They have many peculiar similarities musically and lyrically that make them that much more melancholy and thought-provoking, and while Princess is more about Bill's troubled experiences with his own creative process rather than the general humanity-pondering of GTKWGO, they are two sides of the same coin in my book. Depressed Bill is really something special.
    - On that note of "Depressed Bill", I will leave you with my favorite 2011 song of his: "Go To The Store". This is honestly one of the most harrowing songs I have heard: it is sheer emptiness, the abandonment of all ambition, sinking into a hole that seems impossible to escape from. Bill was not in a great state in 2011, as he was really struggling with finding the right process to best help him satisfy his goals. Much of his music this year has undertones of emptiness and, for lack of a better word, stuckness. He was trying very traditional song structures and feeling unsatisfied, but with this song, that whole concept is flipped on its head. It is his heaviest song and really something special.
    - From his 2011 songs, two of my other favorites are "I Can Play" (recorded in 2014) and "All U Need is Love", which sounds totally unlike Bill and more like 80s European disco, FWIW.
    - I really admire Bill's 2018-19 streak, but I can't help but feel that at least a few of his songs got a bit "samey" during this time, partly/mostly due to the time crunch involved. The chord progressions and melodies were bright and poppy, but this led them to get a bit repetitive and... well, Bill was obviously a bit lyrically fixated on "getting back home". Most of his songs during this time are not among my favorites ("Slow Down", "Hallelujah", maybe "BF w My Own Front Door" although it's better than I remembered), and I think he has improved markedly as of lately, including lyrically, which is an angle I always appreciate with Bill.

    • @FunkadelicPeach
      @FunkadelicPeach  2 года назад +1

      I can totally see what you mean about the 2018-19 streak being somewhat same-y. To me, it feels like he’s “in his element” more than things being samey. Good point on the “getting back home” lyrics though lol. The post hiatus songs are definitely the most interesting, to me. The pre-hotewig songs feel mostly silly/experimental, and they are hard for me to take seriously. Like some of them feel like Bill just thought “well I don’t have a whole song figured out but I have this one idea so I’m just gonna record it and put it out there”. We could just get high is definitely a great song and (I think) one of the first ones where he proved that he could actually be a “song writer” and not just someone who posts their melodies online. Definitely an important song for his career as a songwriter. “In California” is just not a favorite of mine. That guitar loop really gets to me and bugs me lol.
      Thanks for all your feedback and comments!! I definitely need to check out more website specific stuff and pick out some of my favorites. Thanks for recommending a few. (I can play is good. I like it).

    Loved the video. Very glad it showed up in my YT feed.
    "Money" is an eternal banger for me (I guess I'm more of a Jazz head which is why) - What gets me every time are the polyrhythms in the last section, I still haven't worked out each of the rhythms that are going on. I probably also like it because it's one of his few Minor key tunes.
    I agree they're not the best but I will Vibe and Jam along to "Hello sexy pants" and "The Ground Plane" for as long as I live!

    Out of all the songs, i just have to say that there is no contest for my favorite.
    By far, by a landslide, without a single doubt, More than a dream is one that I can’t stop listening to. you talked a lot about poppy versus interesting, and how you really have to pay attention to more than a dream. That may apply to others, but as a person who hyperfocuses on things that I like, paying attention to this song is the only thing I do while listening to it. it would honestly be my favorite song ever, if it weren’t for penelope scott and the postal service.
    Not to mention, I can tell this is the exact point where he got a hang of 3D animation. The whole music video is smooth, simplistic, and minimalistic, while also having enough details to keep my eyes busy for a long while
    In short: it’s simple and clean, but it also provides endless intrigue. It’s easy to get lost in.

    So good! My personal favourites are:
    fly around, all time favourite, kept replaying the outro and the heavenly sounding segment with the lyrics, "So I'm holding onto the details / Capture this moment..."
    more than a dream, its just so good, especially because of the "Dreams make sense / And all the best dreams will be dreamed again.." part
    second all time favourite, i'm scared, reminds me of one of those underground mario platform levels "help me understand help me formulate a plan" was a jam, and the little instrumental bit just before and including he 2 verses starting "I'm not scared / I'm just a little bit concerned and overwhelmed about something", super catchy like an earworm
    here comes the sun an absolute banger, I overplayed it so much when it came out that I'm not impressed by it anymore, hoping a listening break will allow me to enjoy it again, but I remember the feeling of glee I had
    and i wanna be a movie star because I can't get over the bassline and the "And I know your probably wondering who you are" and the outro with the "I'm gonna be a movie star" was so pretty

    great video! feel like youve missed some songs, though (like you're free to do whatever you want to and i'm a diamond). also, you infrequently told us when you skipped, when sometimes it was much less obvious you skipped it, yet still no disclaimer, an example being how you cut "i'm confused". you make it seem like it's the same length as i'm stuck in a rut.

    Shame you didn't do more interpretation.
    I know Bill's abstract lyricism can sometimes be hard to pin anything under. But I wanted for you to share some more of your theories other than just "at the airport terminal".
    At least some of the more straight-forward songs. (as straight-forward as you can get with Bill)

    • @FunkadelicPeach
      @FunkadelicPeach  2 года назад

      Totally. I have a few more theories that are more than just surface level (for example, “slow down” being about being on drugs and interpreting the world differently) but I think some of them are pretty far fetched.
