    He's so musical, it's incredible. Because one could easily make just random noise with all those strings at once, but to arrange a song that you don't even suspect is being played all on the same instrument, is insane. The meticulous amount of arranging and synchronizing of parts weaving in and out, is so cool to watch being performed.

    The thing that makes Steve a cut above the rest is his use of dynamics and melody. The other guitar 'hero's' just seem to be doing acrobatics for most of their performances, but Steve Vai has great song structure. This was so obviously evident to me when I saw G3 with Steve, John Petrucci and Joe Satriani years ago. Steve played last and it was really like 'now here's the headliner' when Steve came on. Of course Joe and John are amazing players but after the first 5 minutes it all just sounded the same but Steve has variety and melody which is just so much more entertaining

      What if Tommy Emmanuel is older than Michael Hedges? Wouldn't that make Tommy the pioneer instead of Michael Hedges?

    • @Joshreece
      @Joshreece 2 года назад

      @@pihermoso11in terms of age and percussive fingerstyle, Pierre Bensusan predates the both of them, but ultimately what made Michael hedges so impressive to me was the fact that very few of his songs remind me of anything else, most of them contain techniques that almost no one had ever used before and many of them were in tunings that almost no one had ever used before. I don't really think Tommy Emmanuel is comparable example either.

    • @pihermoso11
      @pihermoso11 2 года назад

      @@Joshreece Tommy Emmanuel is a guitar god, he is one of the 5 certified guitar players picked by Chet Atkins himself, when he auditioned for Favored Nations, steve vai's own record label, he left steve vai speechless, so if Tommy is good enough for steve vai, then he's good enough for mere mortals.. and Tommy inspired new and upcoming players like Seiji Igusa and Kent Nishimura, while you downplay Tommy's guitar contribution to the world, i have yet to hear any of Michael Hedges work or the new players that he inspired

      @@pihermoso11 I am not making a qualitative judgement about them. I am saying in terms of the road down which Andy McKee is only developing real estate, Bensusan and Kottke, and Hedges settled and terraformed it. Emmanuel is fantastic but in a discussion about Andy McKee I don't see how comparing Emmanuel to Michael is the least bit sensible so maybe Emmanuel has work I haven't heard that makes that comparison apt

    A lot of instrumentalists/artists strive to innovate and take their craft to another level. Many aim to make their mark in their chosen field. Very few, however, have attained the incredible virtuosity and creativity that Mr. Vai has throughout his career. Hats off, Steve, you are a legendary artist and a gifted musician with a sound and style all your own. Phenomenal!

    I love how the second verse begins with the reverse line of the first verse. Like... the hydra was awoken at first, wandering around for those unexpecting souls, then crazy dance and chorus, then, calm down go back to the den by reversing the line. This track is crazy.
    I like how all those sound textures complement the Hydra. Like a lot of jewels hitting like a windchime around the hydra's necks.

    Steve Vai has obviously paid his dues and probably does not have to prove that he is one of the best modern day progressive rock guitarist, BUT, being the true innovative artist he is, he continues to hone his skills and always presents something amazing and inspiring. I actually had the chance to meet Steve after a show. He's so humble and down to earth, when I told him I was doing a report on him for my rock & roll history class, he told me to email him through his website and he would answer questions for my report, and no shit he was a man of his word. Took him about 10ish days to get back to me, but he actually replied which was more than I expected. Needless to say my professor was jealous I got to meet him haha.

    That's why for me personally, Vai is The GOAT. It's not one set of techniques, it's not his speed, he has all that but it's how he sees the instrument. It's such a natural extension of his mind that whatever he imagines actually comes out uninterrupted and unhindered. He's insanely creative and to do that takes a special kind of kind indeed and so many hours living through your instrument. He goes well beyond simply playing the guitar.
