The thing with Crimea is a weird fuckup by Khruschev in 1954. Crimea belonged to Russia/USSR since 1783 and was majorly populated by Russians, and aligns itself quite clearly with Russia.
Then in 1954 Kruschev had the (now in hindsight) moronic idea to transfer it to Ukraine for the sake of "unity". Back then this was just a weird political gesture with little importance as it was under the domain of the USSR all the same.
But then the USSR fell apart, and suddenly that Crimea now belonged to Ukraine mattered, and Crimea left with Ukraine. Now Russia is suddenly in a situation where a good chunk of population that considers themselves to be Russians, and a place that contains an important military base is outside of Russia.
Picture it like this: in some weird political gesture, the US President declares that some chunk of land formerly having its own existence inside the US, containing very strategically important US military assets as well as a population that overwhelmingly thinks of themselves as American, now belongs to Puerto Rico. People raise their eyebrows but it goes through, until 50 years later the US breaks apart, and suddenly some uber-important military asset and an American-identifying, English speaking population now belongs to a separate country, that's not on the same wavelength as what remains of the US anymore.
So why does Russia want Crimea so badly? Because Crimea only belongs to Ukraine by a weird gesture made 50 years ago, but which had effectively no meaning until the USSR broke apart, and because it's a strategically important place. Crimea seems to want to belong to Russia anyway, which is unsurprising given the population and that the military base is bound to Russia.

There's also St Petersburg in the Baltic Sea. It used to be the case that a forward base for a navy, back in the days of sail, was a huge advantage but now, with aircraft and missiles and satellites, it's much less so.

Crimea was first settled by the Greeks 2000 years ago and then by the Byzantine empire and then controlled by Venetians through till medieval times. It was then Conquered by the Mongols, then mostly settled by Crimean Tatars in the sphere of Ottoman influence. It was then annexed by the Russians in the 1700s. The Ukrainian population of the peninsula has never been over 25%. It's been Russian dominated since 1900s when the Russian population outgrew the Crimean Tatars. This is why the majority of the population want to be part of Russia. For anyone to think Crimea belongs to Ukraine is totally ignorant of history.

Why Disputed? There is nothing to dispute, other than strong headed opinions of some there in Kyiv. For someone in America to gift Maine from America to Canada, two thirds of the lawmakers on Capitol Hill have to sign a gift bill put up on the lawmakers floor, and then after 400 lawmakers signs it, the President of the United States signs it when ti is put up on his desk. Gift document did not have the signature of Khrushchev. The gift process attempting to gift Crimea peninsula from Russia to Ukraine was incomplete. well Secretary General Nikita Khrushchev tried to gift Crimea from Russian inner kingdom province of USSR to Ukraine province in 1954: he had three lawmakers (then the lawmakers were called political-bureau) who has smaller office rooms in his office building. The role of the Secretary General of the Soviet Union was similar to the role of the President of America. He cannot gift away land all on his own. only three lawmakers signed the gift document, whose offices were in the Secretary General's office, and sat in smaller chambers of the office of Secretary General. There was NO signature of the Secretary General Nikita Khrushchev. The three lawmakers were the only three people and they were members of certain lawmakers committees, such as communist leaders family relation association, another was a member of lawmakers foreign relation committee, etc. To gift land, as per law of the Soviet union tho thirds of the lawmakers of the gifting country (Russian Federation) have to sign the gifting document. However only three signatures could be obtained. When a messenger went from the third lawmaker to the fourth lawmaker with the document, the messenger boy came back with a bloody nose or a black eye every time he asked the remaining three hundred lawmakers to sign the gift bill to gift Crimea from Rusia to Ukraine.
Finally RENT dispute::: Finally in about 1961 or so, Khrushchev asked that lawmakers sign a bill approving the Soviet union pay Kyiv for rent of military base in Kyiv or Crimea. That's when the confusions arose. He just told them not to ask questions of ownership, as Kyiv needs the rent money at the time.

Every single European neighbour of Russia was unilaterally invaded by Russians or Soviets in the past, and the whole of eastern Europe hates Kremlin, not only because of past invasions and occupations but also because of the governance system of Russia, which is based on the worship of authority, the cult of personality and - yes - serfdom and serf mentality. Add to it extreme militarism and brutality inherited from Mongols and Tatars and there is nothing that could even remotely attract any potential allies. The only supporters of Russia are decrepit one-party totalitarian states with a genocidal history China etc,

They fabricate "votes" saying that the people there want to be part of ruzzia and then send troops there to "maintain peace". And if anyone tries to take it back, ruzzia justifies it (to their own people, so they don't revolt) by killing even more, saying that "they had to". People back home accept it and stay silent. When in fact they should be doing the exact opposite. But they won't, since there's no longer independent journalism in ruzzia so they don't have access to information.
