Great tutorial! Far better than the ones from the other guys who think loud annoying music is better than audio of the tech explaining the steps.
Love all your videos. You do such a great job of explaining ans no ridiculous loud music. You have helped me before and even uploaded extra videos for me. . Thank you.
Hey, this guy makes it look easy (fair play to his skills) so before you try this - I just tried doing this twice, and spent a total of two hours. I ended up giving up because my hairdryer kept over heating and switching itself off which meant I couldn't keep the glass hot enough to peel off, plus the credit cards and old gift cards I was using just kept bending and were actually too wide for the glass on the whole. I managed to get small pieces of the glass off but only because it was already cracked - I personally don't know how I could've got the whole credit card side under the glass if the screen had no cracks because it was really hard.
I'm glad I tried this DIY, but personally I found it a real faff so I'm going to just pay the money for someone else to change the glass covering on my screen because I'd rather spend my time doing other DIY projects and other things. If you want to do it yourself, I'd say leave a decent amount of time to do it, and buy the proper equipment instead of trying to skimp using household objects that aren't suited for the job.
Hope you fix your screen either way :)
It maybe the glue condition. Depending on how old it is and at what humidity the laptop was used the glue may become petrified and heating it won't do much. Plus these computers are now 9 years older than when this video came out :)
I ordered and successfully replaced my screen using this method and the screen is working fine. Thanks for that
it was easy?
I just followed these instructions for my broken LCD screen and it worked great! A lot cheaper than the 550$ quote I got from the apple store.
Hello Nadia, did you have to change the display cable as well? I'm looking for one because mine has a false contact.
Work great. The LVDS cable was to difficult to get out but by doing what you showed and pushing the cable through made a difficult job easier. Thank You
Our offices are generally clean, ventilated, air-filtered and regularly sanitized.
We've heard of customers doing these repairs outside on a bench with good results.
We would not recommend exposing electronics to high moisture levels such as well-vaoured bathroom.
A quick wipe with a microfiber cloth prior to sealing usually does the trick for us.
I did this today but i made a HUGE mess. My screen was cracked pretty good and it just kept spider-web cracking every time I lifted on the edge. I used 2-inch clear tape to completely cover my screen so the tiny pieces of glass would stay put when it cracked. I took me a few hours but I got it done and it looks GREAT!
+louie GREAT IDEA!!! My entire screen is cracked so I'll have to tape the whole thing.
very good video! great job professional and straight to the point. two things i may add 1 suggest to wear some rubber gloves to prevent finger print stains. 2 remind to check the surfaces for dust specs, before closing it up.
It's a common problem, popped out during filming of this video as well. It's pretty easy to repair - put it back in-place, re-crimp the metal on the connector.
Any heat is better than none.
We use residential grade, walmart brand for these tutorials, but we use heating stations in repair shops.
Best video i seen so far ... tells you ALL the details to get it done propper
AWSOME dude you make it very clean and professionally congrats!
Yes, you could put the glass back in.
You could warm it up after and apply pressure with your fingers - that'll help to reinitialize the glue. It won't be as strong as "unopened glue", but it'll hold functionally the same.
Ironically am watching this video on a cracked macbook pro that I just damaged this morning. Haha.
Will be ordering the part and using this video to replace the glass shortly
Same here lmao
Jordan Sinclair Then it's not ironic.
Same here. Hands down my most miserable morning.
im using less then 40% of my screen if not less atm lmao
KungFu Rasta Started as a band along the right side of the screen, grew, then came up from the bottom and now finally I have 3"x4" of viewable screen...
Anything that can raise the temperature upto 50-60 degrees C,
otherwise there won't be any effect on the adhesive.
A hairdryer, a heat gun, even a portable heater/fan combo would work.
We are using the cheapest heat gun that the Walmart caters (we don't put many HOURS on it)
There are 1080p screens that will fit the profile, your only problem is the proprietary LVDS connector. There are no adapters known to us, if you find one, let us know!
Ordered from them and my screen is back to life. Thanks for the video.
No, the cam is not included with the "LCD screen"
However if you find a "back cover" / "top lid" it will be included.
Before you order any new parts, its best to check connections and reconnect the cable to camera board at the top and to the motherboard on the bottom.
You turned what may look very scary into something very simple and easy! Well explained!
Is this far from changing the webcam or it may be just 2-3 more steps?
Thanks :) The Webcam is probably easier - it likely has a disconnect at the top and can be removed with-out taking out the LCD, once the glass cover is removed. But considering the age of the computer it maybe easier to use a USB external webcam.
It will work.
Just keep in mind that the crack can be either on the LCD or the Glass cover, or both - purchase your parts accordingly.
Okay so if the glass is just cracked, NO damage to the LCD, can I just stop after removing the glass itself and not have to worry about disconnecting the video cables and all that?
I'd like to know this as well
must be disconnected see the tutorial
tuneadoes Lo
The glass is just superficial - you can remove and replace it with-out touching any other components, cables or plugs.
It's better to keep the computer off for this though.
Actually unlike PC laptops, Apple doesn't supply fantom power to the LCD in the OFF cycle. Plus there is a warning about having to be authorized to disconnect the battery on a Mac.
The ElectroStaticDischarge bracelet is a hotly contested topic in technician circles.
You can do it if you want, but no devices pictured in our videos have ever been killed "under camera" and all were filmed "live" with no ESD bracelet.
Disconnecting the battery is a good idea generally, however some devices do not come with easily removable batteries and in this case, the Apple sticker said don't do it - but there were no warning sticker for the LCD :)
Do you sell just the glass screen?? I only need to replace the glass as it has a crack in it, the LCD is fine. If so how much and I have been told that there are different grades of glass also, do you recommend any?? Sweet vid. Cheers
Your description sounds a little vague.
The camera should only have one connection (5 wires - USB standard)
As long as that connection is intact, the camera can be put back in-place and help with the glass, or you can go an extra step and secure it with glue/tape (just not over the iris)
Only if you are careful, soldering irons are typically very pointy and sometimes very hot. I wouldn't use a soldering iron for anything other than soldering though.
I've just seen a Macbook on ebay with nearly defect display, wondered if it's possible to repair it, thanks for your video im about to buy a macbook with a low price and change the screen later ...
Great tutorial, I would recommend disconnecting the battery before removing the LCD cable cause on reinsert could blow screen backlight fuse.
i think this may have happened to me as i cant see the screen is it an easy fix?
Androski Diberooni
It is the likely suspect. The fix is moderately simple - there will be a tiny fuse near the video connector on the motherboard, it can be jumped or replaced. It is usually marked F1.
Just a note regarding the battery disconnection - we always recommend doing so, however it was less necessary in this video since the LCD was reconnected when the video cable was disconnected from the rest of the computer.
Fuses blow when the connector is slanted when plugging it in - probably should have mentioned it in this video (and we do in most of our newer videos) - always plug the video connector straight-in - and always use both hands when plugging it in - helps to keep it straight.
thanks
hi, guys, thanks for video, but how about the dust? how to avoid getting it inside? where is the best place to do such operation at home? I heard about the well-vapored bathroom, but it seems little strange for me because of condensation
It should be pretty self-evident from just looking at it.
Does it look like a regular picture with just glass cracks overlaid (from the top glass) or do the cracks have black "ink" around them? Are there any vertical lines coming from the cracks?
Best is to Google images of a cracked LCD and compare.
Should be very self-evident.
You make it look easy. Thanks for this installation guide.
Typically LCD replacement's affect on the warranty varies from vendor to vendor, laptop to laptop, and are subject to warranty terms that vary by market (geographical location), year and model.
This question is best suited to the support department of a specific vendor, prior to repairing, and after the model number (or serial number) have been identified and declared to the support agent.
Not much heat is required for this repair, you will melt and warp the rubber side trim if you overheat. Unless, the glass is badly broken. In which case, it will be a slow process heating and removing glass shards. Do not overheat and don’t hold the heat gun in the same place for long or you risk burning your LCD. Don’t heat bottom of the screen much, as you risk warping the keyboard.
Nice guide, how about about a guide regarding replacing a lvd cable?
I have a 15' retina display MacBook and it is cracked. I really love your tutorial and believe I could do this myself, everywhere ive checked wants an arm & a leg. I do need it for the webcam especially. Do you have those in stock? and if so round about how much ?:) It might be a 13"inch retina MacBook pro I will find the box, for when you reply .
Retinas are harder to do an LCD replacement on. You'd most likely want the whole assembly. Find out the model number from the back of your laptop - i.e. A1398: www.laptopscreen.com/774118/
Tip: The lcd film protector should be removed at the very end before reattaching the glass to avoid any fingerprints and/or scratches to the lcd.
The one thing I would add (haven't replaced mine yet) is my display has many cracks of small shards. I realize these may be problematic so I'm going to use a wide roll of masking tape over the entire screen and trim to the edges so the whole screen stays intact.
In this case it is a good idea to reconnect video cable to the LCD and tot he motherboard before ordering a replacement screen. The symptoms described can indicate video cable ajar condition.
Well if you were worried that the glass is made specific to a panel, it is not.
You can just buy the glass. eBay is the best source for those.
If you are replacing the top cover, it's best to watch our 15" MacBook tutorial.
Generally you don't need to open the glass and remove the LCD, if you already have a full featured replacement cover.
Just disconnect the Video, Wi-Fi, Camera, BlueTooth cables from the motherboard, unscrew the hinges, profit!
Wow thanks for this! One question please, if I wanted to clean inbetween the rubber and the screen to take it off and put the exact same screen back on not a replacement would I be able to put it back on? Or is it as soon as you heat up the glue and take off the screen it can never be put back on?
Hi laptopscreencom, yeah that would be amazing! I hope you can upload it soon so I can change my resolution on my 15" unibody as well. Thanks!
Great tutorial, but NEVER DISCONNENT with the battery connector pluged.
You are referring to what commonly is monikered "top cover" / "back lid"
Such parts can be purchased used from eBay/Amazon.
We also carry entire top covers for some models, check our site!
If you follow the procedure in the video, you will not damage the LCD.
If you focus your heat gun directly on the LCD for over 20 seconds, it is likely to be damaged.
Sorry, hairdryer settings, configuration and operation is not something that we are closely familiar with.
But essentially you have to get the surface of the device to hot enough to the touch, but not searing the fingers.
I was able to replace my glass screen with your help. (I had no need to change out my lcd.) However, it continues to loosen every now and then. I applied heat with my heat gun again and it stayed firm for a few days before it slipped out slightly. I am glad I saved the money it would have cost me, but now I am always having to be extra careful, otherwise my screen could fall out & break. Any advice? Is there a glue you would recommend? I'm out of ideas. Thanks.
what did he use to heat the glass? &how much would it cost.. or is there anything else that could be used
My Macbook Pro screen recently got stepped on and has a crack across the whole screen and up the side, I was wondering if this would work to fix it?
One thing these videos do not tell you is that you always have to unplug the battery from the logicboard before you do any work related to the logicboard or it is a very good chance that you will fry the board.
+rnaderpo It is a good idea to do that, although "a very good chance" is too strong of an assertion - but I guess it'll depend on the installer ;)
I have a mid 2012 non-Retina display MBP. I have been getting into photography and videos lately. I was wondering if I could just remove my current screen and replace it with a retina display. Can we be able to do that?
You should disconnect the battery before starting, and you should use an ESD safe bracelet (or whatever that's called)
Can you use the same method to replace the screen if it is already cracked?
Hey, thanks for your video. It helped me a lot. I have one important question thoug. In the process of removing the LCD, somehow my connector bracket (?) (that little metal bridge that helps to secure connection broke... Is that a major problem? Do i have to buy a new cable
? or some tape will fix the problem?
Again, thanks for the video,
Best regards, Hugon
Thanks, nice video tho. Just having this question because I'm not up to changing the screen, but I want to buy a new top cover / back cover. But I have no idea how, can I use this method then remove the top cover or is there any better way?
Thanks in advance

Warm up the glass with the heat gun or a hair dryer when closing it for the best adhesion.
Absolutely (not joking).
Heaters, microwave gel pads, leaving it in the sun - all these methods will make it easier than not heating the iPad at all.
Any disassembly may damage the logic board, the table, the tools and the installer.
Common sense should be used as the primary tool.
The LVDS connector supplies power to the back-light, and if inserted on an angle, in reverse, or any way other than "like a detonator into a bombshell" the logic board can be damaged.
is it possible to use a hair dryer for heating?
+Julia Michie YES. I tried and it worked!!
+Chetan Gole on what heat can i use the hairdryer. low, med or high?
"Philips Hair dryer HP8112/00" on medium heat.
sharp. i c it will work, but my impatience has caused me to break a piece. ouch
can a blow dryer be used instead of the heat gun
+David Ashton +LaptopScreen.com replied to another post, "Yes - hair dryer is fine. The temperature for the adhesive to start to soften is around 50C-60C (122F-140F). Higher temperature than that may melt plastic or damage other stuff. Heat-gun is good for heating quicker - but you still have to be very careful and gauge the temperature by touching the heated surface - making sure that its definitely warm - but is not searing your finger."
Yes it would.
Can you replace a normal screen with a retina screen?
no because the flex connector is different
too bad :( would be great if it worked
Do you know what replacement screen will work on a retina 13" macbook pro?
Hi,
I ordered replacement glass for my macbook 13".... the existing glass is shattered, but the screen works. Can I pry the shards of glass out without using a heat gun?
So is it possible? I'd imagine games would just take a massive hit, but you can probably still play them in a lower res.
Does the glue for the front glass hold as well after it has been removed and replaced once?
Hi! Thanks for nice video. Do you have any alternate for the suction cup? I bought a big one, and it wont stick on screen. Is it for instance possible to use tape, or just pick the screen up without any suction?:)
Thanks in advance:)
No, 15" requires top cover removal due to the mounting system under the glass.
Thanks for the help! My friend was going to throw his away because the screen went out and he just gave it to me and it works great now! He's mad but ohh well, haha, a laptop for $40. Yes
Please tell me where I can find. The lcd and bezel. I can not find it anywhere
Excellent Guide. Thanks for your guide...
If I'm just trying to put a colored overlay behind the apple logo on the back, would there be a more simple way to get to it, or would you recommend just going as far as tilting the lcd forward a bit?
I recently scratch my macbook pro screen, I think the lcd screen its okey couse its not broke, but the scratch bothers me a lot.
Can I only buy the glass and change it or I have toy buy the entire screen ?
Can I replace my old screen with a retina display??? that would be awesome!
I intend to do this repair, however, the LCD screen is not damaged. Will applying that level of heat damage the LCD? Or can I just replace the glass?
+Jonathan Warner As long as you do not over-heat the assembly you will be fine. The temperature for the adhesive to start to soften is around 50C-60C
(122F-140F), gauge the temperature by touching the heated surface - making sure that its definitely warm - but is not searing your finger.
Sounds good, thanks!
What did you use to apply heat? a heat gun as well? how did your repair go .. I have a similar issue
Hello, I think I need to change the video cable from my MacBook Pro 2012 1/2, since it's giving me problems in a way that I need to move the display so it makes good contact. How much does it cost and how can I get it?
Hello. Great video. I ran over my macbook pro mid 2012 13.3inches. The whole upper display screen is in bad shape. I will have to replace it. If I wanted to replace it with a retina display screen, is it possible?
Anything is possible, but in this case it wouldn't be as easy as just plugging it in. Neither the video interface nor the hinge mounts would be direct drop-in compatible. If one were to make such a mod, aside from the physical mounts one would have to design and build an eDP to LVDS converter, accommodate power supply for the back-light, and do it in such a way that it all fits inside the computer (which already has very little space in it). There are no off-the-shelf components available for that.
Hey I have a 2009 MacBook Pro but don’t know model number and my screen just has lines on it. I was watching RUclips videos when it went dead. And the next day lines are like an 1.5 inches apart
everytime I take a screen shot of the crack if doesnt show up. how do I email it to the technicians? much help needed people
Raymond McSpirit Haha, funny. Try putting a mirror in-front of the iSight camera and taking a picture. (Unless you have something like a phone, tablet, hand-held gaming console - or even a camera - that you can use to take a picture).
lmfaoooooooooooooo
How can i replace the mini camera mines has completely detached from the screen and its holding place in the laptop? it does look like any ripped damage. but when i put it back In the right side has a match part but the left connection i cant tel where it would hook up too... help me please
i have a macbook, though i check the model and it says its A1278 which according to your website is a macbook pro, is that fine if i just buy the a1278 model
Thanks for this. Does this process work on a 2015 13" MacBook pro?
Nooo... this one is only up to 2010. 2015 requires the whole assembly replacement and would be similar to this: ruclips.net/video/R2uz3yEyqWc/видео.html
can I replace the screen of a 2013 13" macbook pro retina with a 2015 13" macbook pro retina?
Hi Friend, thanks for your. I have a MacBookPro 8,1 A1278 2010 says at the top and 2011 in the detail of software , core i5 4 of ram , screen 13 " . It happens that normally turns on fan startup sound and all but gives no video at all, is black screen , also does video to crank or start the system with an additional external display, but instead if I have video when I launch the single connected system the external display and disconnected from the motherboard native screen . this is why we tried to get the screen to try another but mori in the attempt and am with the trizado glass to one side, I guess for not hot enough the screen, by the way, a few degrees C I have my air gun welding ?, then Espro friend does not I am having bored with my detail and can give me a hand with the prognosis or solution
wanted to do this as part of a diy project to customize and laser cut the lid
Thank you!
is it possible to install a retina screen on a macbook pro Mid 2012 (A1278 non retina)?
Thanks again!!
It's not a direct plug-n-play replacement. But anything is possible, it is after-all about hooking up a computer to a display. Would definitely require some kind of an active signal converter device, small enough to be augmented inside the machine.
say I was wondering,
Is it possible to install a Retina screen into my standard Macbook Pro 13 inch? or possible an higher resolution one?
thanks for the info!
Will any kind of heat gun work, also, which heat gun is the one you use? Thanks
I'm a regular dude that replaces all my own screens on iPhone and MacBook. Also, I replaced my HDD with a SSD and increased RAM. My friends think I'm smart.
ruclips.net/video/5PsnxDQvQpw/видео.html
Wow....
please excuse my ignorance but why would you want to replace the lcd screen/panel? is it for higher resolution or something else?
+seatha03 No, this is for those who actually broke their screens (i.e. closing a lid with earbuds laying on the keyboard).
There aren't any better panels that would fit the MacBook Pro 13" for high-res upgrade or better angles - the connector is proprietary :(
If I just wanted to replace the glass is the heat gun going to damage the LCD?
Good points, and should be followed.
A1278 is Ok if i use this video for that model of macbook?
What do you do if there is no damage to the LCD screen just the glass??
Then just replace the front panel glass of the unibody macbook pro model. I have some experience replacing the LCD polarizer on a macbook air. Honestly, you could use a hair dryer (it'll just take a heck of a lot longer). Also you don't have to worry about breaking the front panel of glass considering you're replacing it.
"Heatgun", purchased at Wal-Mart, $19.99
Of course for professional repair a heating station is a good investment, but for home use, even a hairdryer is better than nothing.
From technicians world-wide,
Thank you!
can I use the same steps for a1502 model? (13 inch retina display.) are all the placements the exact same as the laptop on this tutorial?
+jade lucas No, the retina displays are different. An easy way to replace a retina display is by replacing the entire assembly like so: ruclips.net/video/C3-4qwml-F0/видео.html
If you were to do the LCD matrix replacement on a retina it would go something like this: ruclips.net/video/cXSR2dP6L1Q/видео.html
If I was careful could I use a soldering iron?
Is that a 2012 model????
Will this work on macbook pro retina display as well? Its a mid 2014
