I placed packaging tape horizontally over the entire screen so I didn't have to worry about it breaking and slivers cutting me or getting all over the computer. It made for a much cleaner project. Just a suggestion.
Yes I will do the same and instead of the plastic card I want try to separate it with a fishing line, I know In China they separate phone screens from the glas for refurbishing in this way.
I did it now also with a thin and flexible guitar pick, it was a very ugly job, and I had to remove it in a few pieces, because mine was cracked several times, I definitely recommend protection glasses and gloves
@lulua mahalo that's what I did, I used tape on the whole screen it was still bad, and I used a hair dryer and I covered the screen with a piece of wood, I was afraid of heat damaging the screen.
Hey, this guy makes it look easy (fair play to his skills) so before you try this - I just tried doing this twice, and spent a total of two hours. I ended up giving up because my hairdryer kept over heating and switching itself off which meant I couldn't keep the glass hot enough to peel off, plus the credit cards and old gift cards I was using just kept bending and were actually too wide for the glass on the whole. I managed to get small pieces of the glass off but only because it was already cracked - I personally don't know how I could've got the whole credit card side under the glass if the screen had no cracks because it was really hard. I'm glad I tried this DIY, but personally I found it a real faff so I'm going to just pay the money for someone else to change the glass covering on my screen because I'd rather spend my time doing other DIY projects and other things. If you want to do it yourself, I'd say leave a decent amount of time to do it, and buy the proper equipment instead of trying to skimp using household objects that aren't suited for the job. Hope you fix your screen either way :)
I’ve had to replace my glass twice. The second glass went very well after knowing what not to do, and how to do it without my mistakes made on the first try. If you do have to use a heat gun/hair dryer, try not to aim the heat all at the edge of the glass, you will melt the rubber gasket that runs along the outer edge. Try to aim the heat about 2 inches inside the outer edge so you are heating the glass, not the rubber.
I follow your videos and learn much. I have a problem, the metal camera cover was still attached to the broken glass and ended in the trash. Do I need one and if so where can I get one. Thanks
Could you please tell me what temperature I should set the rework station air gun to? It has such a wide range of temperatures and I want to do right! Thanks.
I'm going to give it a try and expect the worse since I've never done this before. You made it seem very easy, I'm afraid of the glass cracking as you said it can cause a cut. I have all the tools required except for the micro fiber and of course that expensive heat gun.
Hi there, would replacing the screen help with water behind the screen or would the whole LCD assembly need replacing? It's been there for months so turning it upside down and all is not helping at this point. My macbook is working great, but the display is very unsightly due to the water spots. If this can fix it, I might just do it myself lol
I have the 2020 macbook pro 13inch. My stupid nephew took a heat gun and heated up my screen. Is there a possibility it could of melted the screen? Are the displays plastic or glass?
couldn't you make some sort of metal frame, like a square with an "X" going through it, attach it to the glass, and pull up on it to remove the screen in one go. That way the glass isn't bending. I've never see anyone do something like that, which is surprising to me
Thank you. I bought one off eBay and had dust behind the screen and it appears as black dots when the machine is on. Now I know I need to get double sided tape
Yes, this is a mid 2012 (A1278), as yours is. Just always make sure your glass replacement will fit YOUR model MacBook. I believe all the steps are the same thereafter.
I just got a box cutter and started from inside of the screen and pealed ir right off. That permanent tape is mumbo jumbo. It was hard actually impossible to peel it off with a card but not with a box cutter. Had repaired put double sided tape before it broke again. Yeah. Used a heat gun 1500w. Totally useless, just used box cutter to peel off the strong tape
Another thing was I kept the screen on the whole time. As if keeping it on would cause an electrical shock that breaks the screen. Idk . Maybe the uploader didnt want to be held liable if he was shocked
Just cracked my screen today and checked how much it was for repairs... over $600....not that economic... So, I have ordered a glass part replacement and am going to follow this tutorial and do it myself because fuck apple

use normal tape but stick it to itself to make a loop :) and make sure the tape is strong. make the loop a little shorter than it needs to be because it'll lengthen when you flatten it out
That's very unfortunate, I apologies if that's what happened in your case. This procedure is extremely difficult and take at least 3+ times to get it down correctly. In this video I used a rework station that gets much hotter then a hair dryer but the heat placement and precision is much better. The hotter the better "on the outer rim of the LCD" should probably be better advise. Thank for the comment.

thanks man , it was really helpful, have just got my screen replaced, i did it with hair dryer.. and credit cards..
Great!
I follow your videos and learn much. I have a problem, the metal camera cover was still attached to the broken glass and ended in the trash. Do I need one and if so where can I get one. Thanks
Vey nice Video! It's a very simple process! I have everything except the gloves! It also prevents finger prints on the new screen!
Could you please tell me what temperature I should set the rework station air gun to? It has such a wide range of temperatures and I want to do right! Thanks.
This is a perfec informative video, thank you.
pry plastic card at the glass screen edge or the casing edge?
Thank you for recording and sharing. I’m off to give this a try now!! :)

Nice idea for the plastic card

When you said m3 tape, did you mean 3m tape? I can’t find any m3 tape online and don’t want to use the wrong kind for the job.
Yes 3m tape
Is it possible to do this on a 2020 MacBook Air a2178?
can i use iron heater ?
This is a lot better than a few of the other videos where the idiots use metal tools the whole way around the screen perimeter. Thanks
I see they have size 1mm 3m double sided tape on eBay and Amazon. Is this the right size to get ?
2 or 3 mm is good.
Very helpful, thank you.
Hi nice work thanks for share this with us, so i got a question how much celsius grades are you using to separate the glass? thanks so much. Fernando
240 celsius at a intermittent distance using a rework station. You can find a rework station new on ebay for $30
how go without damaging the rubber gasket around the glass?
Go slow with low head and pry in with a plastic tool.
im thinking of wether i should do this or not. im scared i will do it wrong but im not paying for apple to do it.
Great video! Thanks. Do you provide this service?
How to DIY video guides only ;)
Is it possible to sort of "reposition" the new glass a little before pressing it into place?
Yes, you can peel it back carefully, it will take some pressure and time to seal properly.
Thanks!! Worked for me.
Awsome! It's a very difficult repair, I'm glad you were successful :)
Thanks for the vid! You're awesome!
Thank you for the comment!
I have the 2020 macbook pro 13inch. My stupid nephew took a heat gun and heated up my screen. Is there a possibility it could of melted the screen? Are the displays plastic or glass?
AFAIK the outer layer is glass, but the lcd panel itself is plastic
Got a question, can't the credit card actually scratch the real screen behind the glass at 6:57?
If you're not careful, yes.
couldn't you make some sort of metal frame, like a square with an "X" going through it, attach it to the glass, and pull up on it to remove the screen in one go. That way the glass isn't bending. I've never see anyone do something like that, which is surprising to me
Where did you get the new screen from?
It's only a glass, you can find it on eBay or AliExpress
id like to give my MacBook air a glossy and black look, can i do the same thing with MacBook air??
No.
I’m in the process of doing it right now and I highly recommend using tape all over the screen, cause I didn’t do it and it’s a fucking mess.
What’s the width of that double sided tape?
3mm should work just fine here is a link ebay.to/2LeUyWF
Reeeeeeeeeeeee the link doesn’t work anymore
Thank you. I bought one off eBay and had dust behind the screen and it appears as black dots when the machine is on. Now I know I need to get double sided tape
You're welcome and good luck.
i need a replacement glass for a 2018 13", anyone know where i can purchase it?
ebay
True.
well done
Good Job! Thank you!
Thanks.
Can I do this with a hair dryer? Lol
Yes.
oh hell yes... it works brilliantly.
Not for me it took about 3 hours for me and the whole screen cracked
Yes I used it
can you do this on a mid 2012 model?
Maverick Morvant he Said in the range of 2008-2013 models
Yes, this is a mid 2012 (A1278), as yours is. Just always make sure your glass replacement will fit YOUR model MacBook. I believe all the steps are the same thereafter.

M3 tape. 😂 Also, your magnetic switch on your heat gun is not working.
why does he call glass lcd??
The LCD glass panel guards the LCD screen. Not sure what you are missing here.

welp, i got everything buuuuut the double sided tape :c

"The hotter the better..." Not good advice! My LCD has a big heat stain now.

Thanks for sharing, so now I know to put my hair dryer on a low setting when heating the screen.
