The notch MacBooks have an anti repair mechanism where if you replace the screen there’s these weird spots unless you desolder the IC chips from the old display and solder them to the new screen.

Drilling is standard practice in many IT departments. Unfortunately they don’t always realize they need to drill the memory chips or it won’t work.
@@JasperJanssen sometimes it's just to show the manufacturer that it's been destroyed before getting a warranty replacement, not to protect/destroy data. Other times, people just don't care I guess.

Always astounds me how many people have such anger management issues they'd smash a hugely expensive piece of electronics without a care in the World.
I'll bet that the person who smashed it was probably a spoiled and/or entitled kid who's parents should've never been parents... after all, stupid parents often result in stupid children.
For real, I never understood how do they do that either. I have a year old MacBook Pro and not a single scratch or even a single wear out marks. My phone at other hand is a 7 year old Sony with no noticeable scratches. Some people are comfortable throwing their anger towards the device if it's not bought with their own hard earned money. My bro has also destroyed several expensive phones in the span of 8 years.
Just like how parents intentionally break electronics like consoles in the name of discipline. What a waste.

Screens on their own are pretty hard to find because most sellers would just list the whole computer rather than part it out. Especially for vintage systems its damn near impossible unless you have part numbers to search for. I bought an entire Thinkpad just to harvest the screen assembly since a replacement panel would cost as much.
Makes sense business wise. The most wanted part is the screen. Once that's gone u left with unwanted parts.

Dang I feel lucky, the screen replacements on laptop are $80 at max for my HP Probook 445.

Actually, in the newer Macs I think the setup screen really encourages turning on encryption.
Macs from 2018 and newer have a T2 security chip that encrypts the drive (in the Apple chip Macs I'm pretty sure it's built into the chip). I should know, because I lost all of my data thanks to it.
Yeah, this doesn't work anymore. I had to do it recently and it now prompts for the Apple ID thanks to Activation Lock.

As AASP Technician i can also told you, that computer (12 inch retina from 2016 and 2017) after disconnecting battery need to be booted by 5W charger. That was kinda tricky as it was only mentioned in apple manuals

Funny, I JUST fixed one of these about a week ago. Similar story with the smashed screen, but mine also had a bad keyboard for $80 USD. I bought a used chassis for another $100 and just swapped the logic board over. It's now perfectly functional and being used by my dad. :)
I believe most of the displays out there are for the 2015 model. The 2016 and 2017 models introduced the small bracket on the LCD. Another issue I found that people should be aware of is that the hall effect sensors in the replacement were either missing or didn’t line up with the magnets on the chassis, causing it to not detect when the lid was closed. Fortunately I fixed that by buying some replacement magnets and taping them to the bottom of the keyboard.

Hugh, NEVER use Loctite RED 271 on something like this. Those hinge screws will now NEVER come out without using a lot of heat and effort...even with that, the heads of the screws will strip out well before the screws would even start turning. For small screws and electronics, use Loctite blue 242 as it keeps things from loosening over time but is removable.

Big mistake: 1:44, you need to press a small button to shut the battery down before removing the keyboard flex and logicboard. Otherwise there is chance of damaging the ISL charging IC. That IC is still very expensive, and you can only source it from a donor board as they have program in it. By the way, A1534 has a design flaw; after using it for few years, the CPU will be degraded. Then you will have bunch of weird issues. Such as random shutdown, unable to boot when cold or unable to recognise the SSD. Overall, e-Waste.

The cheating student situation is such a strange tangent to include in your video. The leap from essay writing websites to getting caught to smashing the laptop's screen is tenuous at best, fantasy at worst.

I disagree. While he doesn't have hard evidence that it was smashed because of something to do with the cheating, he's right that it's the type of smash you'd get from hitting the screen as opposed to dropping it, and if you're using essay-writing websites, you're cheating. On top of that, as Hugh pointed out, the history of the laptop ends right around the time there was cheating taking place. It seems like a reasonable assumption to me. There's still wiggle room for an alternate explanation, of course, but the timing adds up quite nicely.
He describes it as an ‘educated guess’ in the video, which it is.

My samsung RV laptop was a bundle in with a better pc that ran windows 7 , the samsung had 2gb of ram and had a very hard life , at first roblox wasnt so hard for it , but by the time 2017 swung around it was chugging , and 2019 was a big hit , by then the 500gb hdd had been filled with games , in 2020 my little brother , threw a cup at it , rendering the top bit of the screen junk , which means i had to plug it into the family tv every time i wanted to use it , 2021 was a sad year , the laptops hard drive was giving up , it had done from 2009-2021 , i had a yt channel that was run on that , its gone now , the google account was deleted by mom , because google wouldnt let go of her credit card , but when the hard drive gave its final few laggy seconds of roblox , then started clicking , it was , the end of an era.

I’ve got one of these with the “T” key half functioning and now a dead SSD. Classic 12” MacBook
I had the 2015 model and good god that keyboard caused problems. I had one key just fall off for no reason one day, and a bunch of them just kept sticking.
I still love the aesthetics of them, but I never found them very usable lol. Especially since I lived in an environment that gets hot during summer and it would just overheat and die the second you tried to do something simpler than stare at the desktop

You could search for used one with a hopefully a good screen but fried motherboard, but how do you know? "Well it worked until it didn't" is about all there would be to go on. Ridiculous situation.

When I retired my last laptop (gave it to a charity), I ensured that the hard drive was first removed. Whiping it did not seem adequate to ensure that my personal data was completely gone.

If you own on of these macs, I highly recommend you apply a thermal mod to prolong its life. The 12’ macs are plagued with SSD failure issues, I have a video on my channel that demonstrates

I will never understand how people can treat their devices like this. I might overdo it somewhat by daily cleaning my laptop, mouse, keyboard, phone, ... but imo that's way way better than doing this.
It seems that anger issues are a completely different story. Here it was a horrible person, but i also have an honest to god highly intelligent friend who does snap and break some device every few months. It looks like a deep deep frustration but who knows what really causes this.

Also they are slowwww. Slower than even a 2012 air with sata drive. I have tested it with installing mohave on both. And the air had 4 gb of ram 😅

It looks like Apple used the same anti-repair methos as on the latest MacBook Pro that has the notch, when you replace the screen the display drivers stops working (that's my guess on why it loses every animation/transparency effects and on why there's weird spots) unless you solder the IC chips from the old screen to the new screen
I've always wondered why apple included the whole "resetpassword" method as their average user would have no clue about this and most wouldn't use disk encryption
Does this work on all macs? I was painting for a guy and he wanted me to move some boxes out before I started and I saw two macs that he was gonna throw out, one was smashed and the other is fully working, I asked him to remove the iCloud and then but he didn’t since he’s not tech savy. Just wanted to know if this method would work I think it may be a 2017.
I don’t recommend ifixit toolkits because the description sizes of the tools blends in with the color of the case.. I spend way too much time trying to find the right bit. Not to mention I can get as good/ better kits at 1/3-1/4 the price
Went to Apple and got a free keyboard and display replacement for my 12" MacBook. Some miracle I say.

I shut a wire into the bottom right corner of my M1 air and there is one crack that has rendered the laptop useless. Giving self service repair a go as I already had the tolls and if I send them the old screen back it would be $150 cheaper than the Apple Store.
I've always thought the design of this particular MacBook model is fantastic! I'll have to see if I can get my hands on one in good condition for cheap
They're very pretty.
And also everything breaks. CPU failures, SSD failures, keyboard failures, USB-C failures... even when they work properly, they're woefully inadequate and slow for even the most basic daily tasks. Never buy a 12" MacBook.
Just get a Windows laptop...

I life in Germany and buyed the 2017 I5 version from England. I only payed 90£. With taxes its arround 150USD. And i want to say 2 things: First, you can pull the LCD Connector down like the other one but without the need to open the plastic bit thing at the end. secound, be carefull with the Battery. The Battery in my Macbook was swollen and even a original replacement was swollen. If you ever have the same issue buy the EGOWAY A1527 from Amazon. I hope i helped you and sorry for my bad english XD

now that i know it is so easy to get into a mac without a password, i am sticking to laptops from 2010 with linux installed on them, after all of apples anti repair madness, im just going to stick with the old tech.
speaking of anti repair measures, one of my friends gave me an an interesting laptop, it is a dell inspiron laptop that has the hard drive in a very weird spot that requires a removal of the motherboard to access it.
Dude... You can get into any OS if you don't encrypt your files. It doesn't matter whether it's Linux, Windows or macOS
Not just Macs, any computer without encryption is pretty much open season. Always encrypt your data if you care about your privacy.

FYI: ForceTouch Trackpads like this one usually run straigt on PPBUS_G3H (always on). So would strongly advice connecting them BEFORE connecting the battery.
You can't connect them before battery in this Mac and the 14" an 16" MacBook Pro :(

I noticed some oddities with the display, the weirdly long black screen and then a weird graphical glitch on the apple logo just before the login screen appears. Perhaps a sign of non genuine screen or Apple doing some "serial number" bull?
That Display price is ridiculous; raw LCD panels are always cheaper, but with the condition that the Clamshell was in, there was no saving that one. That's why I always check the price of the parts before purchasing something.
I bought an A2337 for $345 that had a broken LCD, then the LCD Panel was $117 (a full Display Assembly is nearly $400), so I got a fully working A2337 for under $465.
Been watching your content for a few weeks now and it inspired me to try and fix up my old samsung galaxy s9 with crap battery life, smashed back glass and a broken charging port and headphone jack. I'm now writing this comment on that same phone! Keep it up and death to Apple

I knew an idiot guy who got ransomware on his Apple laptop (I expect he had been watching porn, or right wing political sites) he not only smashed up his laptop, he set fire to the remains.
i have repaired many laptops of Uni students laptops had simple issues like Static Buildup they had passwords and they trusted me to not look trough search history

Idk about you guys but when I get angry I still have some self control as to consider the price of something before I break it. I can throw an empty water bottle at the wall without a care in the world but I always stop myself before I grab something that I can't afford to replace 💀💀

This macbook doesn't have a fan cooling which is interesting because almost every majority electronics has it for a long terms cooling.
Most MacBook air like laptops don't have fans
The new M1 Airs also don't have a cooling fan, if memory serves me correct. Don't know about the M2 Airs.

I've learnt my lesson when I throw my phone on a mattress for losing a match on an online game.... The phone didn't break, the screen didn't shatter, rather the screen came flying out of the phone body that the momentum snapped the ribbon cable connecting the display to the motherboard.... Asked the repairer if i can get a replacement for the ribbon cable but he said no.... And so I replaced the whole display, lol

These MacBooks were the worst ever built for repairs, the designed way of removing power before anything else is to slightly lift the back panel and on the logic board there is a yellow button near the battery disconnect label, this is to be held 10-15 seconds to (de-power) I have repaired a few of these and even the slightest wrong move the logic board will just stop working
