- This is Part 1 of a new build. How to build an Octagon Picnic Table. For as long as I can remember I wanted to build an Octagon Picnic Table and I looked everywhere for a good design and plan. Well I finally found one that was perfect for my patio. I got this design from Woodcraft Magazines April May issue Volume 10. It was a design and article by Bill Sands. Bill did a great job with this article and made it very easy to follow along. I only hope my build videos are as easy for you to follow. My table is build from Pressure Treated Pine and the material cost was around $152 US.
Plans and a cut list will be provided by the end of the build and will be available on my website shortly. In the meantime I recommend trying to get a hold of this Bill's article from Woodcraft Magazine.

Had a table just like this growing up. I must make one for my kids to enjoy
Cant wait for your come back on your shop and all your friends
Great to see you again. Yeah the morning weather was really nice Sunday and Monday. Even in Fort Myers, so you'll enjoy the table for a while anyway. And we'll enjoy the build videos. So keep them coming. Take care, David
Glad to have you back. Nice to see simple workmanship with a relaxed atmosphere.
Drawing up the Sketchup Plans and Cut List.. I will have them available for you all soon...
when??
I wasn't able to find the plans and list. Could you tell me where to find them? Thanks
Laney Shaughnessy
Did you post this by chance?
When will your plans be up please? Looking forward to building this
Nice Video clip! Forgive me for butting in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you researched - Rassiff Amazing Woodwork Blaster (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a good one of a kind guide for getting the best woodworking plans without the normal expense. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my friend Sam got astronomical success with it.
Nice my dad built one many years ago, I now have built several for family and friends of his standard design. I was too young to pay much attention when he built the octagon one so I am enjoying your build and will soon tackle it myself, many thanks and I enjoy your videos.
I've decided to buy a table because the wood is so expensive right now in Canada! But thank you for the great video!
For me this has been a very challenging build. There are many ways to screw up in even small ways that add up because of so many joints. I have been gathering new learning experiences in trying to get this completed, and I am still at it.
Howd it come out?
Don't give up! I find woodworking is a lot of trial and error being self taught. Keep attending RUclips university...lol. I frequently pause, rewind and take notes. My knowledge has grown in leaps and bounds because of RUclips university!
I just discovered this guy today because he doesn't have the word woodworking in his title. Three of my favorites are easy to understand like this guy: Stumpy Nubs, 3x3 Custom Tamar and Matthew Peech
My best show number one fan in san antonio tx
@LaneyShaughnessy thanks for the lesson and tips. Whenever I use my miter saw I'm usually throwing scrap under the long ends...why have I not thought of your style? Duh...lol.
And he makes a Grand entrance back! Great to be watching you build stuff again!
Like this design too, looking forward to part two. Today was a perfect taste of fall day to use that table! Thanks Laney.
Dave Ellingsen Today was a really nice day... The opening of the video when I was sitting at the table was shot this morning..wow the weather was awesome...
This is definitely on my list of things to build. Thanks for all you do. I really enjoyed the 'voila and the chuckle added something too. Keep up the good work!
wow that looks awesome. and at 152 bucks for a table is so cheap compared to commercial ones. 152 bucks wouldn't even get a plastic "hunk a junk" that would fall apart. nice job Laney cant wait for the next one
Excellent build and explanation. All the handy jigs were very impressive.. I guess time and again such inspiration is required to keep the passion going. Definitely going to try this and add an umbrella hole in the center:) thanks once again for doing all the research and bringing that woodcraft article to life.
I'm glad to see you back in your shop too. Great Part 1.
Hey Laney Just great to see you in the shop again. Nice looking picnic table. I like the walk through design . Great for us older folks that can't climb over the benches . This would be great for the wife who is disabled with RA
Thanks Laney
Roland
Great to see a new video from you Laney, the sponsor video was very well integrated in it, wasn't disturbing and totally understandable!
Welcome back Laney, great to see you doing your passion, we truly missed you. Nice build and timely for me. My wife has been talking about an Octagon Picnic Table, I guess that is my next project. Thanks again for all you do for us.
Glad you are posting on RUclips again . . . you have been missed !!!
Sponsor pitch is tastefully done. Good to see you back!

Hey brother, great explaining i feel like i could make anything, you explain it super well. TY for that :) excellent video!
Laney, May I sudgest you buy the DeWalt chop saw stand they are only about $230 and they kick ass
Glad we got all that footage of you loading and unloading wood from your truck. Helpful.
It's good project furniture..congratulation.
Great video and project Laney, it's always great to look at your video's.
Thank you for all your time. Henrie. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Nicely done on the table Laney. Great video as well.
Looking very nice
When carrying a small amount of short boards like you are in the video, just leave the tailgate up and rest the ends of the boards on it. Then throw a tie down over them to hold them in place. This secures the lumber way better and safer with no chance of it falling out the end of the bed.
Glad to see you back with another project, Laney!!! Love this table! Can't wait to see Vid #2! As always, thanks for sharing your "WWW" (wood working wisdom)! You're one of my "trusted sources".

Great video as always, Laney! Good to have you back!
Great job Laney,
Nice to see you back, I'm looking forward to part two.
You are the man Laney!
Here is a suggestion for all build videos. When cutting parts at the start flash up a sketch / model in the corner with the current piece being worked on highlighted. It would make it much easier to follow along.
I saw you on Izzy's show, good workmanship sir.
Hello from Palm Coast!!!! 14:30
really good work !
Just in time for summer!
Good job
Laney...Nice to see you back...
nice table , i plan on makeing a deck on my house an this be a great table to put on it, did i miss where you have the mesurement plans Laney
So nice to see you back and getting sawdust in your hair. Poor spiders will have to leave. Maybe bugzilla will visit. I'll bet you measured 5 times before cutting once since you have an audience (haha). Thanks for sharing the build.
MRrwmac Yes got all of the spider webs cleared out..lol
awesome video Laney .your going to have a lot of nice BBQ at that Table mate ...oh and ...you happy Making saw dust again man .
I'm already excited for Part 2!
Love your stuff and that you are doing it again :-) (And I told you to your face in NC :-)
Great work Laney!
Great video can't wait for part 2
Holy crap. I used the same blender effect with a similar saw sound on my video which I posted pretty much at the same time as this one. That's pretty freaky!
Mario Cappellano Nice effect..I like the wood floor in yours..lol
:-) that was an extra few hours work, so NOT worth it! I think it's pc upgrade time for me, it was around a 4 hour render time for that tiny clip.
this is really cool man,wow
+StreetKingz4Life Thank you
Great job as always my friend. Good to see you reclaiming some of you time :)
Great table and vid. I do have a question though. You said to make a 60 degree cut on the mitre saw but I saw no jig. Can you explain this please.
looking good
Hi.
I'm José Masri from Mexico city. I'm following your channel and trying to build these picnic table. Congratulation for your videos and explained details.
I want to ask you if I should use after finish the assembly linaza oil mixed with wax bee? Or what I should use?
Nice to see you back. Now go make a mess :)
Love this table!!
answered my own question. Googled magazine issue and up it popped and the pattern was available for download
Great design, I just finished up building it. After sitting on it for a few weeks, I was wondering if you have any thoughts about what it would take to add back rests to the seats. It would make sitting at the table for longer than an hour much more comfortable. I'm not that experienced so I don't know if this design could support backrests. Any thoughts?
Hello, can this be achieved with only a miter saw for all the angles? I know you used the table saw for the perfect angle. I was just wondering if the 23.5 degree angles will be fine with the miter saw.
Thanks again! Great tutorial.
Laney, This plan is so cool thanks mate. Do you by any chance have this plan in a metric conversion?
Great table. Cannot find the plans
ugh, as a beginner I was trying to follow you and it was impossible. I see this is from 2014 but gosh I wish I could do this table
What kind of glue are you using and why?
In your intro you mentioned you used pressure treated pine. It is my understanding
(right or wrong) that pressure treated lumber has a certain amount of toxicity. Can you comment on this for a picnic table? Thanks.
+usaeagle7 Do not use pressure-treated wood for making cutting boards, or for any food preparation surface.
Picnic tables made of pressure-treated wood have become common, and are fine to use for the purpose they were intended... to serve food on (or play cards on), not to prepare food on! They should be coated as needed with an oil-based wood preservative (not paint or opaque stain) to seal in the chemical preservative. As long as one is not chewing on or eating directly off the table or preparing food directly on the surface you are pretty much ok to use it..here is a great article that goes into more detail about pt wood www.naturalhandyman.com/iip/infxtra/infpre.html
I appreciate the response. Thanks.
Do you have plans and a build list?
very good~
I just love it how u Americans say u can do ur projects for less $150 dollars in the UK it probley cost anything up 2 £200 pounds wood so expensive here in the UK but I love watching the wood work u do
I cant find the plans for this project, not even in the link provided. Can someone help?
I really want this round picnic tables
Come back every body mis you kaboooooom
what is the size of your chop saw? I dont have one and I am looking into buying one
Hi. Thanks. Pal, are the sketchup plans and cut ready by now???
Hi, is measuring unit given by cm or inches ????? Octagon Picnic Table
Norm Abram (who?) was always concerned about the chemicals used in pressure treated stock when sawing etc. Will the surface have a Polyurethane/oil or similar finish eventually, considering food will be on it eventually?
Will Ford Great question... after it was built I let it dry out in the sun some before putting a finish on it and just ended up using a Thompson's Water Seal on it... No Poly/oil or any other type of finish.. most food will be on a plate never making direct contact so I am not too concerned about this issue.
Looking good...
Question: green clamps, what brand are those? I liked the bright color:)
Vicks VapoRub The color in my video must be off a bit.. The Clamps are actually Yellow and Black. They are JackClamps Made by Lowell Thomas Tools..Great Clamps.. I use them throughout this build.
do you have any plans for a fish aquarium stand I would like to have one for my 55 gallon tank.
Just found this and it is exactly what I want to build. Is there a pattern and material list available anywhere?
+Karen Andersen Yes there is..www.asimpledesignofocala.com/Store
Very Nice...!
do you have the plans on how to build that table saw tool to cut angles?
It's an older video but I'm sure you have the designs, I can't locate them?
Hi Laney,
Do you have a sketch up plan and cut list available please ? Thanks from Dan in the uk 😀
Hello
In about an hour I will be building this table and thank you for the video and plans. Also I did download a copy of woodcraft magazine issue 10 but i did not see the article for this. Anyway, wish me luck. :-)
+Warren Randall excellent....the woodcraft magazine has the table on the front cover....I no longer have the magazine, but I am almost positive it said issue 10
Not sure if I sent you a pic, hope you can see this? facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10159059350060607&set=p.10159059350060607&type=3&theater
I've never seen pressure treated pine with square edges.
How long and wide is the total project finished? Just seeing if I have enough space to put this on my patio haha
about 90" Wide x 90" Wide
thanks broo i made it happen 100%
The link to the website doesn't work. Is there another way to get the plans?
Have these plans been posted anywhere yet?
