How to Be Anything in D&D

- Flavor is free. In D&D and really any TTRPG, "reflavoring" is one of the best and easiest ways to make new characters, monsters, spells, really - anything. So to help get you going, here are 3 brand new characters for dungeons and dragons, created by reflavoring old ones. Homebrew is great. Believe me. But man, you'd be surprised how often reflavoring does the trick. And is a lot less work.

How do you guys like the new style? What are YOUR favorite ways to reflavor D&D mechanics? Let me know in the comments!
This was top-notch! Very funny! :)
(Edit: Also good ideas)
I wish I could like more for the drunken Beast Barbarian rant. The bit becoming real is a thing I live for.
But to answer your question, I tend to reflavor based on just changing one small bit of the tone of x or y thing and usually that can get you a ton of mileage. My favorite ones so far are Armorer Artificer as a venom style symbiote (making the armor organic), Battlesmith as a Tribal Hunter with a power I call The Old Power. Which is effectively a rift on the Marvel ability of the same name that was here used as "echoes of the voice of creation" and thus allowed the user to enchant objects (infusions) and command the forces of nature (an iron elemental), and the one I love most...Eldritch Blast as effectively gunslinger.
The artillerist spell list is great for "special bullets". Fireball is a perfect example.
I do like the format overall, and would love to see more of these. Maybe from different elements, like backstories or flaws...
Happy birthday
I just realized…Ben 10 is literally just a moon Druid…
with a watch
Probably at least lvl 10 to get those elemental wildshapes, but def not 20, cause he can't shift at will. Or at least he couldn't last I watched. Maybe he leveled up
This is literally my next character, imma have a blast
@@Cinderblocksally Depends if he has access to master control.
When Ben gains Access to master control he can turn into any alien and shift between them at will by simply thinking about it. He doesn’t get this ability permanently, usually when he does, he screws up the watch for using it too much and has to “fix” it during some free time.
So I guess level 20 would mean he Got Master Control. Neat
@@gustavomarcondes3908 lvl 20 druid can wildshape at will. Sounds like master control to me!
Reflavor Tasha's Hideous Laughter but instead they scream uncontrollably for the duration
Tasha's Horrifying Caterwauling
So a recent character I got to begin playing(literally the Sunday before I wrote this)
Is a Warforged Wild Magic Barbarian. My DM liked the concept, but when I gave them a look specifically at one of the aspects of the Wild Magic table, we worked together to make an unforgettable experience of me joining late.
Meet Number Three: a terraformer bot designed to be self sufficient and make a habitable ‘normal’ zone in the feywilds that’s blocked and harmful to creatures of the feywilds, yet helpful to the creatures that sent my character, a Tolossian. He, the DM, got the idea from seeing the D8 roll 7 on the wild magic table, and we reflavored the difficult terrain effect as me beginning to terraform.
Where things go wrong? Annihilator trap got sprung before I could get a system update that would’ve hardwired my warforged against the magic of the feywilds, and I became Fey-Liberated. Came back to my own world sentient, and was dragged screaming to be shut down because I was defective. Time jump 1200 years, and my character is now an antique statue in a field, standing guard over the crops of an old woman:
Until the parties elf, wearing artifact, priceless gloves from that ancient empire, touched me, and turned my characters software back on.
Aannnnnd that’s how my barbarian woke up in a rage, and had to be subdued by the party while teleporting 30 feet every turn!
this sounds so fucking awesome! Did you get any inspiration or did you come up with it yourself?
@@janpolansky9668 more so I just always loved the concept of a “engine of war growing sentient and struggling with the philosophic issue of, ‘if I was made for war, am I ever able to do more?’” And so far, it’s pretty good. Any direct inspiration… not really-
A giant spider that's actually a goblin that's four-legged and four-armed and wallcrawling and casting Webs.
This video made me think of a haflings sorcerer who’s whole spell casting thingy would just be him having insane luck.
For example a foe tripping over while he’s just standing there in fear.
Every fireball is just a shooting star conveniently landing on the enemy
@@raph3699 amazing idea
@@raph3699I might use this for a npc
Drunkard's Luck is just your Spidey Sense.
Intoxicated Frenzy is just the point that Andrew Garfield's Spiderman reached once he stopped pulling his punches because he got jaded and stopped caring about being the friendly neighborhood Spiderman
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to you
Happy birthday dear cinderblock
Hope a tarrasque won’t unalive you
I kinda can't do a character without reflavouring, but here's my latest one
_"As you gaze into his eyes, time seems to stand still. Hairline cracks start to form throughout your reality, stretching and spreading like eyes to expose the gear-like mechanism that makes the Material Plane tick. Clockwork tendrils slowly reach out from the void, pausing for a moment before thrusting violently forward to skewer every square foot of your body. As you feel the life drain from your body, go ahead and give me an Intelligence save.... When you come to your senses, you appear to be fine, with no signs of the horrors you face. Was it an illusion? If so, why are you 1d6 points weaker?"_
~The Clockwork Soul's Mind Sliver reflavouring the disorientating spike as a illusionary flash of horror.
I was already looking at creating a wind style ranger for a oneshot with wind wall and zephyr strike and you helped me picking a subclass, thanks
🙌
Character reflavouring *can* be done, but only to an extremely limited degree. Because in a roleplaying game such as D&D, flavor ARE mechanics. If you reflavor a cloud of insects into wind, you can no longer justify the swarm biting an NPC just to annoy or scare them. Situations like this are most common in OSR games but can happen in D&D as well if you ever start doing things outside of the verbatim rules, and may allow players to do some really overpowered stuff if you don't think them through very, very carefully.
Always always ALWAYS love your content and I can't wait to see what you got cooking in the kitchen
Call me chef boyardee
What about Spores Druid? That feels like being a plague eldritch horror...like in a Nurgle sort of chaos god.
Sure! That could work really well also
Really a good point. I would go so far as to say when it comes to spells like fireball you reflavor, you could even change the damage type without a problem, just for a little reinforcement to that flavor. There are certainly other situations where this kind of thinking could apply too. Those lateral mechanical changes are totally fair game imo.
The Bloodhunter Lycan IS the skyrim style Vampire Lord mechanically. Use Dhampir lineage on a flying race and that Con based bite attacks.
A player and I recently built a creepy Frankensteinian undead wandering knight. Mechanically, they use Kobold Press's Antipaladin rules (Divine Smite is replaced with necrotic damage, bonus die against celestials and fey), but in all other mechanical respects they're an Oath of Glory Paladin.
Peerless Athlete is renamed Somatic Overdrive - they're a stitched-together artificial Reborn with the ability to supercharge their body for a limited time. Inspiring Smite is them literally ripping the life force from their enemies to share with their allies. Lay on Hands consists of them sharing a bit of their own animating energy to quickly stitch wounds closed.
The player also likes Final Fantasy's mechanics for healing magic against undead. I figured that would be too unbalanced for 5e, so we reached a compromise where magical healing works normally, but is extremely painful to them.
This is great stuff. I absolutely ADORE your editing style
Yes! This is exactly the kind of thing I love about D&D 5e! I’m not sure how well this would translate to other systems, because 5e is much simpler than previous editions, and in many ways it’s contemporary systems. It’s the simplicity of the mechanics that enable this range of flavor. You can
separate the mechanic from the spell/weapon so easily and make it what you want!
Something I do to incorporate a “modern” feel to a game is to reskin bows and crossbows as firearms. A short bow is a 9mm. and arrows are bullets. A quiver is a clip, and you don’t have to “reload” until the clip is empty. Though, I don’t track that because I don’t usually track ammo.
Well people the most important thing about your character is backstory and synergy.
See by establishing how your character got something you make it iconic.
Example one I made two monks who rival each other. Both got the same subclasses Way of the Dragon. However what made them different was Alignment and Feats.
I gave one the Crusher Feat Chaotic Evil & the other Fey Touched Lawful Good.
By playing the same class it’s easy for me to remember. Yet by playing different characters makes it thrilling.
The Crusher Monk just merc a Cleric and stole their holy relics to make into Holy Brass knuckles. Now their punches deal radiant damage.
Whilst the Fey Touched is learning from a Paladin how to do Lay on Hands. Allowing them to turn their into healing ki.
Great video! (Smolder would have done it better though)
Lol, maybe we’ll let him take part in one.
I'd like to get your input on this magic item I'm working on
Amulet of Spell Negation (working title) - spellcaster only
Once per long rest, you may cast Counterspell without expending a spell slot. When you do, gain 2 levels of exhaustion and take non-lethal damage equal to the level of the spell you're countering. You may use this ability even if you have already used your reaction this turn. If you do, take an additional level of exhaustion.
The command words (which ideally should be spoken out loud at the table with great dramatic flair), are, "I Don't Think So!"
Reflavoring seriously overlooked.
Happy birthday!!! (She says in giant speak)
Love the X-Men opening!
My friend made Billy Bonkas Candy Confectionary (just a bunch of traps) and I reflavored my eldritch blast as a gun
This is like that episode of Rick & Morty when he removed his all his toxins and his toxic side was just a dick
Happy Birthday Cinder!
I'm doing a weird swarmkeeper, monk, rogue dhampir. I just reflavour stuff like Entangling Strike or Hail of Thorns as being my bats (my swarm). Cunning Action and expertise in perception and stealth from rogue and all the mobility and Unarmoured Defense from monk help sell being a vampire by representing heightened senses, reflexes, and speed. The dhampir bite counts as a monk weapon as well, allowing me to use DEX instead of CON and replace the d4 with a larger Martial Arts die, giving me more potent bites.
So if this is cinderblocksally on the left, is that sassyblocksally on the right?
And smoulderblocksally was thankfully missing
Brill! Let's have some more!
Why did he hum the X-Men intro before introducing spider-man? That's a retcon, not a re-flavour 😭
Great video tho. I really liked the reflavours you did. Although i didn't really dig the condescending second personality, it might just need a reflavour lmao
SmeagolCinder needs a whole series reflavoring subclasses! Great vid 😂
Finally a stream that fits in an EU schedule🎉
Not a stream exactly. a live watch along as my new video comes out, where chat can hang/react live. But I promise to do some earlier streams sooner than later.
@@Cinderblocksally so glad to hear that,
@@CinderblocksallyIt appears I've been scammed by a quick glance :(
Yes please do streams that fit CET, I rly like your content but I can't watch streams that start at midnight when I have to get up at 7:00 the next day :(
Happy Birthday!!!
Happy Birthday!!!!!!!
The drinking the glass of water at the end really solidified the last clip, so real
My warlock has an entire council of patrons dedicated to the same purposes. They communicate with him on his plane in the form of multicolored spectral hands that pantomime and gesture. In fact, one of his languages is sign language, which he studied to better speak to them.
As a result, a number of his spells take the form of hands and fists that will punch, chop or claw at enemies to deliver their effects.
I also have a gnoll bard who's hideous laughter is replaced with hyenas cackling. I was permitted to rename a lot of spells to make them sound more Musical. Shatter became "Bass Drop Bomb".
Happy birthday! Zac sends his love 💕🎉
My ranger/druid has been influenced by Bahamut. So her nature spells are dragonish. And she never shape shifts because her animal forms have scales and dragon characteristics.
Great video
Thank ye
Happiest of Happy Birthdays to you 🎉🎉🎉
I knew it was beast barb right when you were talking bout it... 😂
I am a new D&D Dm and i hope that this will help in my upcoming campaign

I'm not crying, you're crying
Okay, but can I have what I consider to be Ang's most powerful ability; however, I don't think the writer even thought about physics at all: cavitation bubbles?
I tried and failed to make a reflavored Jediesque character for a campaign. I tried it out by using a Sword Saint build, which kind of took care of the martial ability at their level.
However, recreating the limited taxtical telekinesis was impossible.
Any ideas?
Non youtube short? Wtf??? (Good video tyyyy)
I'm playing a Rogue and I do not have a disguise kit, a forgery kit, or a poisoners kit. All that I'm proficient in. How would you go about acquiring these in a pretty Lawful world (ie. Playing dice, also proficient, is illegal) I wouldn't imagine going to a general store and asking for a forgery kit would happen. It would more likely be acquiring the contents of the kit over various purchases. Any ideas on how to acquire.
Is smolder in here???
You OK bud?
dont usually do this in long form videos but
