one of the things that makes me really sad is when Jo says :
"when people say 'i'd watch anything you do' i get upset, because it's not about my content anymore" (or something along those lines)
i would absolutly watch anything Jo does BECAUSE it's his content, i just like the way he does things : the humor, the animation, the cozy and friendly vibes, these things are in everything he does, no matter what it is

I think it's that he wants to be appreciated for his art, and that expression is appreciation for his person. To him, it's like a parent saying to their child that they'll love anything they make. No doubt it's true, but it's being appreciated for the wrong reasons, when he's striving for quality
What I think he might be missing is the intrinsic implication, in this relationship of fan and creator, is that the person is saying, in different words "I'd watch anything you make, not just because of your qualities as a person, but because you have made such things of quality in the past, that I have complete faith that no matter what direction you choose, you will execute it with such quality that I will enjoy it."
Not blind adoration of someone cared for, but complete faith in the direction of their leader; a crew following their captain, because they're certain the captain will make a good choice.

One video that really explains the whole experience of Content Creation is Super Eyepatch Wolf's "Influencer Courses are Garbage." He talks about the whole experience of it and why these courses can't secure anything due to how much of a luck factor it is. But the most interesting part to me is when he recalls his journey and what it was like for him. It's a fantastic video if anyone wants to know more about the whole RUclips process.

I found the crap guides BECAUSE of your Klonoa video which I loved, without ever having heard of Klonoa before. One thing I miss about content on RUclips is helping to spread the videos to a wider audience with Community Subtitles. I'm really sad that I can no longer help my favorite content creators as yourself to reach my friends, as they don't understand English very well. But at least I got the opportunity to make the subtitles of a couple of D&D videos of yours, and now they're happily playing the game with me as their DM. Thank you JoCat for the crap guides, and I hope that I can buy a Goblin plushie in the future once the opportunity arises.

  • @kirafleur9870
    @kirafleur9870 Год назад +190

It's fascinating to peek behind the curtain and get a peek at what's going on inside the mind of a creator.
To my mind, you've already found a *genius* solution to the issue of "What my audience is interested in" and "What I want to make", JoCrap and JoCat.
JoCrap is more formulaic, he does the same moves over and over but everyone loves him for it. JoCrap represents the "What my audience is interested in" side. The Crap Guide series especially. He's like a sweet treat, or a special seasoning only used during special occasions. Rely on him too much, he'll get stale.
Meanwhile, JoCat is free to do whatever he wants. He's not limited to any one thing. While I fell in love with the character during the "I like Girls" song, having him be a more personal representation of you sounds like a great idea. He represents the "What I want to make" side of things. You can stick him anywhere and he'll never get stale... because he's YOU.
*If I were you, I'd lean into that.*
JoBattle was a lovely interpretation of the battle between expectations vs creative freedom. They aren't always gonna mix... and that's ok! The last thing you wanna do however, is back yourself into a corner. If you ONLY make one type of content and that's all you're known for, the moment you burn out, it'll be less a spiral and more like a whirlpool that's also inside a hurricane. Not only from the disconnect with your audience but from the RUclips algorithm shoving you down a hole.
You're a genius mate, you just don't realize it. Lean into the world you've already created for yourself and through your personas you can freely move all over that Venn diagram without any restriction! The best of both worlds.

"The spiral" as joe called it is exactly how i feel when trying to make content. I'll make a video/stream and upload it, watch it do poorly then get stressed over it and then put nothing out for week or months before im able to stop the cycle and put something else out. It's a vicious beast to be trapped by and to this day i still haven't found anything that helps break out of the sprial easier. If anything it feels like it gets harder every time with the gap between content growing each time. Props to any content creators who are stuck in this and are able to break out with content that helps aleviate the struggle rather than add to it because the internet is a fickle beast these days and getting any momentum at all can be a challange.

This was an incredibly motivating video to watch. I constantly struggle to fulfill my personal needs creatively to the point that I almost feel stuck. I never wanted to try new things because I didn't want to dedicate time to something that would either be unfulfilling(which I don't know how I would know if it wasn't *before* I did it) or end up not meeting my standards for what I want to make.
After watching this, I'm motivated to actually...try, I guess. The knowledge that nothing is guaranteed to succeed is oddly comforting. Because now I feel like I can just try random stuff and see what I like doing and see what I despise. Point is, this video really helped with a lot of my worries about making stuff. Thanks :)

I think Jocat nailed exactly what I came to the channel for. The crap guide series basically set up the tone and format that's become the 'brand', and while variety is good it generally needs to follow this 'brand', else it struggles to feel like a part of the channel.
That being said, I wish there was more video essays and overly edited videos. I think Jocat really has a talent for it, and it's a shame that we won't see any more content like that.

    tl;dr: thumbnails are real important
I started to realize halfway through this talk that there's a lot of videos on your channel that I really would've enjoyed, but I just never clicked on them. When I tried to figure out why, I usually realized there was something about the thumbnail or title that gave me the wrong idea about what the video would be like.
For instance, your Halloween animation was just as cute as your gobboventures animations, but I didn't click on it because I didn't know what to expect. That's why recognizable characters help: they give people like me a baseline expectation for what the animation will be like. I didn't know if the animation would be spooky or cute or laden with meme references or whether it was even a proper animation or a Crap Guide-esque slideshow. With the gobbo on the other hand, I knew he was cute and he didn't speak, so I could guess that Gobboventures were short animations of gobbo doing cute things and making cute noises.
As for the J-Overly Edited videos, I really wish I had clicked on them earlier because they are right up my alley. Somehow, despite having "Edited" in the title (and often the thumbnail), I still thought of them as low-effort stream clips. I think a big part of that is that the thumbnails followed a template (often with a number), and the titles were standard. That communicated to me that the videos were part of a series (which increased the commitment required), that they were all pretty similar (so there wasn't as much to get excited about), and if the number was anything other than 1 then I needed to watch the other videos first.
Something I've seen other youtubers do is take one particularly funny (and easily compressed) moment from a video and showcase it in the title and thumbnail. For instance, if instead of "J-Overly Edited Worms W.M.D. part 1" you had prefixed the title with "GORB Will Never Die!" and the thumbnail showed a worm named "I AM GORB" surrounded by explosion holes, that would've prompted me to click. It may seem cringey, or like you're pandering to 10 year olds, but it communicates that not only is this something more special than just another standard episode from a series, but that it has at least one entertaining moment that requires no context from other videos.

1:50 I don't wanna be annoying (but already being annoying), the full quote is "I have five lessons to teach. What lessons they learn is entirely up to them" (so it's less about intepretation and more about acceptance - Nanny McPhee's five lessons were no fighting, share, work together, be brave, and have faith). By the way, the panel did have (harsh) lessons:
8:42 "Hard work, passion, dedication and quality don't always pay off"
11:32 "Sometimes people just aren't going to care about what I make"
14:20 "It is not the audience's responsibility or obligation to be interested in my work"
    Also,
16:30 "There's only one problem: capitalism" I think this is the thing that encompasses all the other lessons: it's all about supply and demand, not how much passion and effort you put into something. You need to try and marry demand with passion, or at least find a balance between them (if you want to play the capitalist game, that is).

FWIW, I did find out about the channel via the D&D Crap Guide boom, but I do enjoy your long-form content like your analyses and J-Overly Edited. On top of all of the difficulties with what your audience wants, there's the fact that The Algorithm can just decide that it hates you; Loading Ready Run is just one example of passion + quality + consistency just...not being shown to people. That, and despite the fact that I've subscribed-and-hit-that-bell, YT sometimes just doesn't show me when you've uploaded!
I hope you can continue to thread that needle between making things that do well and make you enough money, and things that you actually want to make.

15:08 i like this expression.. because it allows you to channel the Frustrations of the lows, into something, wither it by in a hopeful context, or a spiteful one.
the problem is that, this doesn't prevent the cycle... you can still lose momentum or grow frustrated with your self... i've a couple times done this loop, but i often have to wait, to be not Frustrated in my self, this way i get back that hope/spite again.
a trick that kinda helps, is understanding, if you want change, are disappointed in something, this means you see a flaw, real or imaginary, you see something... there is always an answer in something... and no matter how unconventual the question, saying that the answer is pointless, is defeating yourself at the starting line... and you won't know until you hold that answer, actually holding the answer may not even tell you everything. Intelligence is a never ending loop of Doubt, Wonder and Pride... things fall apart when you are missing one of these, but each of us has trouble with at least 1 of these, there are those that have all 3, if we understood this better, we could realize something
if you have 2/3, just find someone who has the missing 3rd... a group of 3, each having 2/3 is perfect, just enough 2nd opinions. while covering each other

Seeing your personal view on Zero Punctutation's content is where I think I'd have to disagree. "Making the same thing for over a decade" specifically.
Just because the format of the videos share a genre likeness, it doesn't ever mean they're the same content. While they are all indeed reviews, seeing this content as restrictive and inside guard rails is far from the truth.
The component to each review is a completely different videogame played after all. This would likely keep it never feeling stale, as the scriptwriting would vary greatly depending on a game's quality and how easily you could riff on it, or praise it.
The review of current day content is where a newcomer sub is hooked on the video, while the established subscriber base goes directly for the personality behind the review, and its comedy. With jokes, you can't afford to just do the same thing, unless you want to be labeled stale.
The crap guides are not your double edged sword. The format and character charm isn't some crutch for when revenue is down. You forged a quality product through and through, and people enjoy consuming it. If you think the guard rails is that they have to do with videogames, then tear it down. Crap guides to more hobbies, crap guides to cooking flavors that synergize, crap guides to why furnishing a home is absolute hell.
Deep down, the persona people wanna watch is you after all. The art, the comedic aspect, the brain space.
If your take-away from RUclips is that you can't make what you want, then make what you didn't want to make, resemble what you WANT to make as close as the border allows.
PS: Seeing that DnD is a large part of the downtime content, using a crap format to show or shed light on weird creatures, lore, realms of the game you love would be a smooth transition. That or even a retrospective to the headaches of picking which RPG system to play, and why X or Y system could be someone's bread and butter.

    • @JoCat
      @JoCat  Год назад +8

I know what you mean and in some ways agree, but at least for me it's not a matter of subject, but the format itself. I could make a crap guide to anything: music, pop culture stuff, everyday slice of life scenarios. The issue is that the Crap Guides themselves - that style of humor, fast talking, joke writing, rapid presentation - it's just not creatively fulfilling for me long-term, and is actively taxing on me creatively. It's just not something I want to do anymore, and the struggle is feeling like I HAVE to in some form in order to make that smooth transition.
Should I do it even though I dont want to if I wanna keep the audience? maybe, but that's not as big a priority for me anymore personally

@@JoCat I wonder then if you can try to use the Goblin or other animated characters to find a personality or set of personalities you like writing for. Like a naive goblin filled with wanderlust excitedly telling the audience about the thing they learned, or some of the DnD characters explaining areas of interest they've looked into. You could even combine both.
The best part of having this "Crap Guide Universe" you created with gobbo and the other characters is that now you can explore that content free of Jocrap while still fulfilling some of the characteristics that brought success.
At the end of the day I'm an internet idiot throwing 2 pennies to someone I like watching, but I hope something in here gives you some inspiration.

      @@JoCat
Your second few points kind of shows the hard truth people don't believe from long time youtubers.
Creatively taxing, something you feel a struggle witch, long term fulfilment.
That's a job. All these things are the same description as any first year in a 9 to 5 I've had. RUclipsrs don't lie here, there is indeed a struggle to find the best rhythm to produce what you think is best, and also what is best for its stability. A channel's analytic plummet is very much the same graph as a bad sales chart.
You are as free to toss away anything of the old video format you produced, as a storeowner is to throw away the racks of most sold produce. This leads to the store downsizing or straight up closing.
I think what leads to feeling disheartened is seeing youtube as a type of livelyhood but not a job if its to be taken seriously.
While this one is me assuming. The clear goal of a content creator is to do what they love, while getting payed in return to live in stability, and produce more of what they love, correct?
If that's your goal, it's a clear and great one, but it isn't some straight line. Most of the channels that started to steer away from their 2010 or 2015 formats, had an audience big enough, and a creator with a low spending habit (funny but a must), to survive a large scale content transition and carry over to foster a new audience. To have a buffer does not come easy, but it came with the trust of an audience that was usually 6 to 7 years strong in the making.
Last thing I ever want to see is a creator ghost out like Etalyx. But if that's the rocky path to finding your happiness and fulfilment in live, it's not my choice to make!
Just remember that whichever audience you want to foster in your new runs also depends on video runtime. Kids and Teens are made out of time, 1h+ videos can be easily digested by them, while adults don't have the same available time. This means that the viewer base will not be the same every 4 to 6 years, since teens grow up and lose that available time. I love XPto3 for instance, but I don't watch their long DnD formats, busy playing my own.
Yet short form content might not create a dedicated or attentive viewer base (unless contantly produced; i.e. SolidJJ or guides), but can by casted as an extremely wide net.
Think that will be the double edged sword, fulfilment vs career. They can happen together, or only one could.

Several things i like about jocat in terms of videos: becoming clear and straight to the point in topics being discussed. Humor and creativity with references and puns. Explaining processes simple and clean. Their passion to games whether its boardgames or video games. I really liked how the pokemon video explained the process of character creation. Lately I been noticing processes of creation is getting a trend rise on youtube and twitch rather than the final product. Maybe do videos on how video game industry whether games or merch came to be. Or how players transformed creation processes. I apologize if this doesn't help. Tossing ideas early in morning. Im sure you will find something in comments to what you are looking for jocat. Please dont give up! Fight!

Of course they're long, not easily digestible, and not too many people are there for that kind of content/have the time to watch it. Still, I just wanted to say that despite all of that I really do adore that content and hope that you'll continue making them for as long you still enjoy it.

These longer videos are great to watch during commutes or even just on the couch like an actual show rather than a short video watched on a PC or mobile device. You might not see this but I think its important that you know that what youre making does effect other people quite a bit, and it wasn't the crap guides (even if thats how I found you and learned Hunting Horn) but it was this video
I'm a content creator too, and I started through Twitch but I always wanted to do RUclips. I've recently started to really hit my stride as far as scriptwriting and editing goes and I've put together some videos I'm rather proud of, and they don't do very well. I can have a killer thumbnail, title, video, whatever, and sometimes it just doesn't hit.
Recently, I threw together a stupid little video with some jokes about a game that was very much meant to be a funny thing that gets like 100 views and I forget about it and go back to making "good" things
That video has almost cracked 100k now.
I'm not proud of it, the 2 videos immediately following it haven't even hit 1k, and I am absolutely struggling on a much smaller scale with some of the things that you mention in this video, so I wanted to say that it was refreshing to hear someone who has "made it" dealing with the exact same kinda issues that us little guys deal with sometimes. Its also worrying that the feeling of always wanting to be as good as other creators never goes away lol
I'm still not sure what I want to do but I do find it funny that your response to the crap guides doing well and not wanting to make more was a video essay on something you loved, as that is what my response is and I'm already in the process of doing lol, I am fully prepared for it to bomb o7
    Thanks for posting this talk

I've been going through a massive burnout and its made it so difficult to go back to my streaming. I'm only 15mins in and already this is so so helpful. I've realised that at some point I slipped far away from the much healthier mindset I had when I first started streaming, and that as a result its put a truly unreasonable amount of stress on myself which is bogging me down even further. I know this wasn't intended as advice but even just that reminder to take a step back and really evaluate why you are doing something, or certain content, has completely changed my perspective on the last few months and the cause of my burnout and is undoubtedly going to help me even more going forward.

I got to know your channel when I was starting to get interested in D&D and found your crap guides, I think they are a great and funny introduction to a great game that seems to have a scary steep learning curve. I played with a couple online friends but we only got 2-3 sessions in because of time zones and schedules, just when I was really getting invested. I try to watch your sessions, but my big issue is time. I feel like if it was cut in smaller chunks, it would be easier to keep track of.
