I had to stand on my head to plug my boat trailer in and then I couldn't even plug in my utility trailer.. the harness wouldn't reach! Ran home without any lights on the trailer but thankfully my husband was following me. Came home and immediately started searching for a fix and found your video. THANK YOU!! I got the bracket you linked on Amazon and just knocked this out. Looks so much better and is actually visible and accessible now! So again.. my HUGH THANKS for sharing your solution to this issue!
Wonderful! Ya man, talk about an annoying thing! There were many curse words uttered trying to figure this out, lol. I bought several different things until I could find what worked. So glad I could help save someone else the frustration! :)
Just installed one on my 2023 4Runner. I was almost touching my spare. It is a full size TRD tire. I ground off the corner to get more distance between edge of this mount and the spare. It ended up working great using an existing bolt that held the plastic on, and one of the enclosed self tapping screws.. Very stout and like the slight tilt towards the hitch to not bend at the connector. I used wire loom over the wire, and then taped over the loom. I kept the plastic wire connector on the frame, and left the old socket mount. Good video.
@@MrEmersombiguns2002 Sounds good, I’m glad it worked. I lowered my spare a bit then held it pushed away while I raised it back up. It helped with a good bit of room.
Just bought a used 4Runner and was shocked to see how stupid was the location of the trailer plug! So glad to find your video! I will fix this Toyota screw-up immediately! Thank you, thank you!
OK, I got it done on my 2010 T4R LIMITED! It was slightly different, but I had enough wire to reach nicely, and as you noted, it is back where you can actually see it! THANK YOU!
Thanks for the video! I will be doing this soon! At 6:50 I'll use a loose zip tie through the old bracket to keep those wires away from the spare tire. Just enough to restrict them but loose enough so they don't touch on the bracket.
Thank you! Just ordered the bracket through your link. Overall I like my new 4Runner, but there are definitely some questionable design decisions on it. Whoever located the plug in its original position obviously never had to hook up a trailer at night in the rain. I literally have to lie down on the ground to plug in.
It will do fine. Mine was 4500 and I took up the mountains of Tennessee. You’ll learn where the transmission shifts. Use manual shift for downhill especially and most of the time just for more ease of control. Get a good weight distribution hitch. I highly recommend the WeighSafe to know exactly what is right. You’ll hit some higher RPMs, but nothing bad. Don’t worry about it. Use manual downshift coming to stops if you want to give the brakes a break. Get a good brake controller. Redarc elite works like you’re not even towing.
No issues really. Expect to be in higher rpms. I used the manual shift option a lot. It helped on grades to maintain speed going down and prevent extra high unnecessary rpms up hill. Just have more control over the trans. We love the camper. I’ve got a Jeep Gladiator now though. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Enjoy!
Looking for vids on T4R towing, thank you for posting this tip. That 166FBS trailer dry around 4100 as you mentioned. Realistically, you'll be at the 5000 pound tow limit at times. 55 gal water tank and 30 gal holding tanks, you'd have 500 lbs of water alone. Add propane, food and tools in the trailer, etc, ugh. Heavy on the T4R. I'm looking for a 3000-3200 pound trailer and 4000 max tow weight. And even that scares me given western states trailering. But as trailer shoppers know I'm sure, going below 3000 on a trailer gets into the world of wet baths, small tanks, uncomfy small package for two, etc. Hard to balance with the T4R's not stellar towing capability.
We just purchased a Gulf Stream 19ERD to tow behind our 4runner. 3090lbs dry wight 4384 GVW. Perfect for a couple with options for Grand kids or another couple to tag along.
Thanks for your video! I’m wanting to tow a 19 foot airstream with my 4Runner. Can you tell me how well yours does towing? How much weight do you tow? Thanks!
My camper is 4599 and tongue weight is around 550. It does the job but I would go over this. It’s maxed out in my opinion and this is with a very good and precise weight distribution hitch with the WeighSafe. 👍
Have/did you experience any problems with your REDARC system using the tph-021 harness? The REDARC website recommends to use harness tph-025 and splice it with the factory supplied jumper harness on 2018 and newer 4runners due the tph-021 harness not allowing the unit to calibrate properly.
I was not aware of any issues. It seemed to work fine although it did take longer than expected to do the initial setup. I no longer have the 4Runner but we towed the camper on several 4-5hr trips and I never felt anything that grabbed my attention to any issue. I’m quite obsessive about my vehicles and I’m pretty sure I would’ve noticed. That’s the best I can tell ya. I bought a Redarc for my new Gladiator also, because I liked how smoothly it worked in the 4Runner.
@@OrganizedMud I can't for the life of me get this figured out. Lol. I seem to be the only one that's experiencing this issue for some reason. Preciate it, man.
@@two_legit1832 tell me what it’s doing? Did you watch the REDARC calibration video? I found it very helpful. You have to maintain the correct speed on a flat road for long enough for it to do its thing.
@@OrganizedMud Yea, I've read and watched everything I could find. According to the manual it's calibrated. Says if calibrated you'll have a solid blue light once connected. Which I do. And trailer brakes operate fine. But I keep getting the yellow/red fault codes on the REDARC knob. No warnings or alerts on Runner dash. And the fault codes are intermittent. And I don't see any problems with any of the wiring. 🤷♂️
Hey, sorry to hear that. Hmm, I didn’t do anything extra not described in the video. You know what, I wonder if your spare is off center. They’re on cables and it send the list likely scenario. I’d recommend lowering it just though that it will move and seeing if it wants to ride a little further toward the front of the vehicle. See if you can make space that way and crank it back up tight.
I highly recommend getting the larger WeighSafe weight distribution hitch. You’ll need to lengthen your security chains, but you’ll be able to lift the rear hatch in transit and everything will be maximized to work together. The 4R handled the camper well, expect high rpms, but it’s fine. A good brake controller and a proper weight distribution setup though and everything else won’t be an issue. I love the camper, but I wish we would’ve bought a GeoPro 20fbs. It’s basically the same except lighter, longer, a walk around bed and a larger shower. I highly recommend checking it out before you buy. If you’re really interested in the Jayco though I’ll sell you mine and buy the 20fbs 😎 👍😊 lol. The Jayco is a great camper though. Great quality. When you’re staying in it you don’t feel like you’re roughing it.
@@OrganizedMud Thank you for the info, our last set up was with a tacoma and winnie micro minnie. We loved it but moved on. We are also looking at the other model you mentioned. I was concerned about the tow capacity of the 4runner but it sounds like you are doing fine. Thank you sir

All 2010+ 4Rs are 5k. This camper is about 4600 loaded. The 4R is not the best tow vehicle, with only 5 gears it likes to stay in higher rpm, but it does fine. I wouldn’t worry about anything under 4000#. 👍
I understand why you did that. I always have to knee down for connect my trailer to my 2019 TRD pro. But you dangerously getting close to wheel. At least the way I see it in video. And I use wireless break controller without messing with wiring.
FYI for Limited owners, this won't work. The rear fascia is too low. Figured that out after ordering the part.
Sorry to hear that. I didn’t realize there was a difference. Were you able to return the part to Amazon?

Exactly! Happy to help😎👍
Thank you! I tow with mine 5 days a week and this is one of the best mods I’ve done haha
I just installed the same bracket. Worked like a charm.
I understand Toyota put the plug in the OEM location for off roading, for approach and departure angles.
If they did, it makes no sense and is unnecessary because you’ll be on the spare first. But either way, horribly inconvenient.
For the wires that are exposed after relocation, I used black spiral wrap to cover and protect against rubbing. Much better access!
