  • Complete instructions for turning a package of clothes line rope into a decorative basket to hold a collection of sea shells.
The rope is 100% cotton 3/16 inches by 100 feet long.
The paint colors are from the Apple Barrel brand. I used Bright Blue, Key West, Caribbean, Tan and White.
Both the rope and paints were purchased from Walmart.

Love this!! I was getting excited from other videos about wrapping my clothesline with my fabric strips scraps (I'm also a quilter). But I never thought about painting these clothesline projects!!
A couple years ago, I bought a 33 color set of acrylic paint made for fabric, glass, wood and metal. I haven't used any since I made the grandkids' tree ornaments. I love beachy decor.

Thanks for another great idea! I have dyed some of the baskets I've made but that is quite an ordeal. I have also painted quite a few but never watered the paint down. I want to try that next. I think that will work better. Love the beach theme idea. I lived in Myrtle Beach for years and have a nice collection of shells and shark's teeth scattered around the house.

It is an easy process and I hope you give it a try. I’m not far from Myrtle Beach and we love to visit the Grand Strand. Hope to go in a couple of weeks to celebrate our 42nd wedding anniversary! Let me know how your basket turns out!

@@mimitodd8781 Have a wonderful 42nd anniversary! We enjoyed our years in Myrtle Beach. We lived a mile from the ocean at the south side of MB. We enjoyed hunting for shark's teeth and found some awesome ones. I usually pull my very old sewing machine out to make the rope bowls, but I see you are using a new Janome. I would probably make more bowls if I used my Janome. The old one I have is very heavy but I'm so afraid I'll mess up my Janome 6600P. It's a solid machine but I use it nearly daily and worry about using it for bowl making. Your basket shape was perfect!!

I happened upon a spray can of Mod Podge. Could I use that to finish the bowl instead of painting on from the jar?

I was in Walmart today in the craft section and overheard a lady talking about Mod Podge spray. That is something new and I haven’t had a chance to try it yet. Will give it a try and let you know.

Can you share how much rope you used to achieve this sized basket ?

    • @mimitodd8781

I used a 100 foot 3/16” wide clothesline rope from Walmart. The base of the bowl is 4” across.
