    The F-22s' callsign "FRANK 01/02" was a homage to American World War One ace Lieutenant Frank Luke Jr, the "Arizona Balloon Buster." Between September 12 and September 29, Luke was credited with shooting down 14 German balloons and four airplanes.

    This intrigues me as I am at a loss on why this audio traffic isn't encrypted as per military traffic during a mission? Would be interested to know how you obtained audio on a guard channel? Just asking if anyone who might be a bit more informed as my MOS was Crypto tech in the Marines (Back when they had such things and didn't dissolve my MOS) I can't fathom that this mission is public domain...at least not yet?

      @@mattz1230 Quite simply the military uses their own systems that are typically frequency hopping and then encrypted. It's been a minute since I have been working on this equipment or even in the military but the codes for these radios systems "were" updated no less than twice a day.
      In a mission like this, It is more likely that all involved with this mission contained a proprietary security key which allows only those involved to be able to transmit and receive each other. They are capable to go to civilian channels to talk to traffic controllers as well but wouldn't be on civilian traffic to perform a military mission. As this is the first time a Raptor has engaged a Air air to Air target with a AIM-9X missile, let alone any, I find it hard to believe that they were sharing that data with the general public...Hopefully I can get info from someone that understands military communication that could collaborate how someone was able to monitor and record what should have been at minimum a high level voice transmission.

      @@repaid1 22 years in the Army. Familiar with comsec keys and loading.
      Again though- WHY would this be encrypted? What's the point?
      This is NOT the first time firing a Sidewinder-X, they have fired dozens at maneuverable drones.
      There was nothing classified here. There is no reason to use encrypted comms at a range that would give a intelligence device plenty of chance to scoop up the signal.
      In fact, it makes MORE sense NOT to use encryption. Everyone in the world conducts ground-controlled intercepts the same. We gave up nothing.
      But if we used encrypted comms, that balloon could- WOULD - intercept the signals. It WOULD relay those off-board to a satellite immediately.
      China couldn't listen in to us shooting down a balloon, but they would get our signals. And then, they'd have all the time they need to break them- and understand HOW we do encrypted comms. And THAT IS classified.
      So, I ask you to use your brain and come up with a legitimate reason to let china intercept our encryption and break it.

    • @repaid1
      @repaid1 Год назад +1

      @@mattz1230 As I said encryption is updated at least 2 times a day, not the protocol of how it is encrypted (That isn't possible with the transmission). It would take the worlds fastest computers two days (+) to decipher the code of a single message Which is now 3 encrptions old and no longer used ever. That is randomly generated encoded, along with tracking and putting all the message together in the correct order as it jumped multiple frequency. I did go to Signal school at Ft. Gordon for my final crypto classes though.
      As for why it would be encrypted. I answered that somewhat. It was a military mission and was "Secret in intention" nobody knew of it till it was over. And as far as the Marines all our communications are encrypted even in training. The only time you would go to Guard/plain transmission is a emergency if your comms went down as a last ditch.
      As I said times may have changed as it has been 30 years since I served, But I was depot level repair for all Crypto at the time. I got out just as SINCGARS was coming in which I was trained for as well. Have a good one brother. Chemical payload? You need to drop a lot of chemicals to be lethal. If you look at historical chemical attacks, single payload attacks just aren't useful, because people don't tend to stay in an effected area long enough to absorb a lethal dose. A single balloon just isn't enough.
      That just leaves a nuclear payload. A single nuke wouldn't exactly be useful either, since it leaves the rest of the US intact to retaliate.
      The only payload that's worth slapping on a single balloon would be a nuclear EMP attack to disable early warning and other defenses in preparation for a larger invasion, and for a nuclear EMP attack, hugher is better, since it gets you more range.
