  • We visit one of our favorite malls at LaLaport in Shonan Hiratsuka to explore and see why this mall seems to thrive when others are dying.

    Thanks for taking us along on your shopping adventure! There's Daiso in the states, also, but no where as cool as the ones in Japan. As for Muji... I think there's one store somewhere in New York, but no other physical locations. I think Muji is mostly online for American patrons. 13:00 I think Hands was formerly named Tokyu Hands. Shopping is still totally a thing in Japan. I wonder how much of it has to do with malls and train stations being an important part of daily life. I think the reason why shopping works is because it's also about lifestyle. When I was in Japan for vacation, when I wasn't quite sure what/where to eat, I would just hop over to the food court or food floor and that was a great way to find something I was comfortable eating.
    I actually did go to Ginza on NYE (or the day before) and that was... interesting... Even in the flagship floors, it was PACKED! Uniqlo and GU are awesome! I tell my friends... don't overpack clothes. If you forget something, or need something, Uniqlo has you covered! And they are everywhere!

      There’s like 10 Mujis in NYC alone but i believe it’s the only place in the US that has physical Muji stores. It’s quite interesting!

      I think you're right - lifestyle is a huge part of it. All the major train stations are intertwined with shopping malls that the train stations run :)

    _ Hahaha … well put! Yeah, shopping malls in JPN are shoppers’ paradise!! You can easily run short of time … and money (of course).
    While I was still in JPN about 30 yrs ago, Muji was popular and Uniqlo was just budding. I’m kinda glad to know Muji is still a big name there. Thanks for the update. Kia Ora from NZ

    Looking at how huge the mall is and able to find something you like to buy then most malls here in the states is hard especially for short people like me my closet mall only has a couple stores now I have to drive an hour to do some shopping or having fun I can’t wait to be able to visit Japan some day

  • @tpatrickl9539
    @tpatrickl9539 8 дней назад +10

    I think the mall succeeds in Japan because they don’t have wide open spaces like they do in the USA. They need to compact their shopping and retail space. It makes them all still desirable to visit. There is no push to decentralize shopping.
    I found a Daiso in Mesa Arizona. They still haven’t gotten to Colorado. It’s so fun to shop and see what little treasures I can find, things I know in my mind that I would like. I found a Magnetic hook that I can use on the side of my refrigerator to hang a Teflon frying pan. Get it out of the way and be able to see where it is. And of course, the petite blocks, lol. Back to the snow belt next week, yuck!

    Yay. Life In Japan. I forgot it was Friday. It really is interesting to see where malls are doing well. On vacation last summer we found a thriving mall outside of Philadelphia. Bring that our malls in the midwest aren’t doing so great it was a fun day! I think the malls that actually have hood foods courts and fun activities rather than just stores are doing better. They had an escape room, among other things, and that was really fun. Congrats for baby Zoe!

    American Malls needs to see WHAT THAT MALL in Japan 🇯🇵 and also The Philippines 🇵🇭 (They have 2 BIG Malls) are doing right and American Malls doing wrong. Maybe the American malls only attract the locals. For the Japanese malls, I can see it may attract the tourist. BTW - Like seeing the Toy Stores. Wonder if they sell TOYS from the Super Sentai series known as Power Rangers in The United States.
