I joined as soon as I graduated highschool. I was a sophomore when 9/11 happened. If I could have joined right there I would have. Love my country even though people don't love her the way they should.
Very enjoyable story bedies the reason for his mission. I'm imagine a year later he's not gonna see this but I wanted him to know that the Ranger who missed the rope fast roping and fell out of the Blackhawk (Todd Blackburn) he didn't die as Tony had said in this interview. He did get medical discharge and he went on to become a cop and i believe he retired not too long ago. That movie had a huge impact on my life as I'd did on Tony so I'm hoping he will find out Blackburm didn't die.

Small correction, Todd Blackburn was the Ranger who fell off the rope in Mogidishu, and he did survive as far as I know. Great story love to hear about the Regiment, would love if you could get someone from the Haditha Damn mission on to talk about that experience.

As a combat vet and having served 3 tours, I know some amazing folks with amazing stories. One in particular is my son-in-law’s father, 1SG (R) Pete Lara. Pete was a team leader in Mosul in 2006 with the 172nd Strykers. During his tour, Pete and his team were involved in a fire fight which resulted in multiple casualties, one being Pete. It’s a long, amazing story. Pete is a bronze and silver star recipient as well as the Purple Heart. He was also the 2007 Amy Soldier of the Year. He and I still keep in contact and I believe he’d be a great interview. Very mellow and fun guy, considering what he went through. Also an amazing warrior. 💯 Again, I appreciate y’all and, Ryan, please continue to do your good work, Sir! Awesome stuff! 💯🇺🇸

I'm no fan of Newsweek, but about 5 years ago they did have a very good article about Op Red Wings, Luttrell, etc. Hearing the comments of some of the Marine officers who were very familiar with that AO was very interesting.
Also some added facts. Ahmad Shaw was a MPT (Medium payoff Target). He didn’t become a HVT until after Jun 28th MH47 Shoot down. #1: HVT (High Value Target) #2: MVT (medium Value Target) #3: LVT (Low value Target) #4: HPT (High Payoff Target) #5: MPT (Medium Payoff Target) #6: LPT (Low Payoff Target)
From most soldiers experiences and mine 2010 was by far the worst year of Afghanistan war for US soldiers, in number of casualties and Taliban attacks. Taliban had all bases under surveillance and all roads as well. Every move was watched and daily troops ambushed all over country. Paktiya was a hot bed in 2010 few miles from PAK border where we were. We stirred up the Hornets nest as unit leaving was literally never outside the wire. We went out daily and got hit at least 4 times a weak on patrols and our COP took mortar fire during whole summer every f day.

Hey llisten man we had tan Ops almost every other day after missions. we had the containers set up and at the top of the 2nd level of containers we had them make it into the little clubhouse for us, and yeah tan ops are very important standard to keep on deployments.
These are the stories Americans need to hear. All the sacrifice, Blood sweat and tears shed for one another and for America. Experiences may vary but if you deployed to war you did your part. That’s more than most Americans who have no clue what it takes to even get there much less getting shot at by the enemy.
So the 4 man SR team was to be inserted to LOCATE THE ENEMY BUT #1 job was: PROVIDE SNIPER OVERWATCH FOR THE ASSAULT FORCE insertion. So Mh-47s / Uh60s. But the SR Team was intended to buy down risk to the assault force via inserting snipers to provide cover for the infiltration via MH-47s . In vietnam CCN MacVSog had 100% casualty rate when they ran 4-6 man teams into Laos and Cambodia. So it’s been a known fact if you get compromised in a confined area with steep terrain. You will lose the 4 man team. When the helo was shot down. All these assets were very close proximity. Within a very short distance of each other. 2: Mh-47D (originally 16 seals per helo. Due to terrain they had to drop 8 seals off each bird because of Lift/Weight) 2: AH64D (From bagram-Jbad-sawtalo) 2: A-10 Warthogs 6: UH-60 blackhawks (Marine QRF) this was the official QRF for the 4 man SR Team.

Great job by Tony and yourself. Bad way to get your first taste of battlefield. No real way to prepare for gruesome sites. Luttrell story is baffling. Opposite views on his account by very respected operators on both sides. I’m not going to ever judge anyone on their battlefield actions if I wasn’t there.

It's well known that piss poor planning by the SEALS is the root cause for why things went awry. ORW was likely the worst black eye in modern SOF history. A lot of people also don't appreciate the pruned, Navy approved puff Piece that was the book and movie.
The Lone Survivor story is a lie. The video of the ambush is actually online. They hot hit by 8 to 12 guys and Lutrell was found with no rounds fired. Look into it.
This is how you treat anyone in the war zone who is found..there were no circumstances making this something different. They didn’t say he was under the influence, they were being weary of him possibly being under the influence of the enemy since he had been in captivity. This is standard SOP
Negative things have been said about Marcus, not from any of the tier 1 community..it’s from commenters looking for someone to blame when they themselves never served. 😊
So private Blackburn that “Fell” in Somalia. A lot of people don’t know the real story. Which is the pilots flying his bird were extremely rusty on brown out conditions. So the pilots were hovering 20-40’ higher. So the tail of the 90’ rope was hanging 20-30’ in the air still. I’m not sure how long the rope was but I do know the tail of the rope was 20-40’ Above Ground Level. So poor Blackburn ran out of rope and fell. Of course they then blame it on him and say he let go of the rope. The truth is the pilots were out of position, hovering high. He got to the end of the rope and it was still 30’ in the air. This is why he survived. He only fell 20-40’. Had he fell all 90’ he would’ve been dead.
This account of how Marcus was found is different than how Green Beret Travis Osborn claimed that they found Marcus on the Team Never Quit podcast. Travis said that Marcus was walking upright with a group of Afghans when he was first located. Here, Tony says that Marcus was in a hole in the ground when he was first located. Why would these two accounts of the first point of contact with Marcus be that different?
The difference is that Travis Osborn was together with Luttrell on that podcast while Tony Brook has no ties with Luttrell. Nicholas Moore, another Ranger with no ties with Luttrell, has said Luttrell was unable to provide them any details regarding the location of the other SEALs. Again, this is very different from Osborn's account, where Luttrell apparently marked his teammates location on his GPS which helped the Rangers find their bodies. No mention of this from Brooks or Moore. Interestingly enough, Moore is the only Ranger who brought up Luttrell's injuries, claiming the Rangers found him with nothing more than scratches, bruises, and a single gunshot wound in the butt. Not trying to completely discredit Osborn but being on a podcast together with Luttrell means he's not going to say anything that contradicts the selling story of the operation.

Wouldn't a better idea instead of punching him would have been to help him learn and see what he need or what he wasn't quite gettin? Yes you would think that everyone that made it that far did for a reason but we still never know whats going on with people. A lil bit of help goes a long way in team building and bonding. I didn't didn't say do it for for him or cut him slack but just a lil help and encouragement and a lil bit of razzing andnjust being a good human goes a long way
Ehhh......first off, video, taken from Surveillance Drones/Helicopter, showed that Blackburn just missed the rope...plain and simple....still a mystery as why. But also, he survived......
Does anyone know whether it was the explosion from the rpg,some guys falling out of the back of the helo or the ultimate crashing to the ground of the helo that caused most/all of the deaths?? Was it even possible for any one of those guys to still be alive after the crash,even if it was just for minutes/hours?? I'm assuming because of very little remnants of the helo being left at all,the explosion likely killed them all before anything even hit the ground or side of the mountain.I was surprised to see that there was even any flat/level ground at all where the helo,or what was left of it,ended up coming to rest.A picture was taken of the men lying beside one another after the team recovered them all and it was flat.Not sure of the type of injuries one sustains when being subjected to that amount of damage in a helo shoot down?? I haven't found info about autopsy results of those poor guys or if any were even done.That shows the bravery of both the SEAL's and Night Stalkers aboard and also the pilots to be willing to enter an AO that hot without Apaches clearing it first.I saw a FLIR video days ago of what Apaches can do to the enemy and it was bad ass.I understand why they were in a hurry to get there asap,it's just too bad they wouldn't/didn't slow down for the Apaches.I assume they were only a few minutes behind the Chinooks,but I know that minutes can seem like hours to both the 4 guys on the ground and the entire team on the helo,it was just a terrible outcome is all.Luttrell was probably the only guy left still alive by the time that the Chinooks even arrived,but the guys on the helos didn't know that.They likely would've slowed down if they were privy to that info.RIP to all that perished both on the ground and on the helo.Theyre all heroes in my mind.

One thing that has always both baffled & enraged me about Luttrells was the fact that eventhough he was a sniper just like Axelson,Luttrell was found to be carrying almost his entire stock of ammunition when he was rescued which also included a couple that Murphy unselfishly gave him either before he went up on the peak to make that Sat Call or after he crawled back down to his previous position where Luttrell was.So it appears as if Luttrell was doing more fleeing than shooting to both help himself and his teammates. Im aware that snipers are usually stationary when they're taking shots at the enemy and their accuracy will be much better while stationary,but Axleson didn't appear to have a problem firing back at the enemy while eluding,plus to make things even more difficult,midway through the fight, Axelson had to start doing this after being shot in the back of his head which actually turned out blinding him in his left eye which was depicted in the movie.BTW,Berg used the autopsies for Axelson,Deitz and Murphy to create the same wounds each Seal endured their fateful day.Axelson likely had very little to no ammo left by the time he took his last breath,which shows he truly done & used every last thing he could until he could fight/breathe no more.Murphy may be the one that was labeled the hero that day (& he deserves the label for giving his life to reach help) but IMO,Axelson was the one who truly took the last stand and that's likely the reason why he was quite a bit always from the other team members,& by team I'm not including Luttrell either due to the weakness he showed during that fight.Other than the fact that Murphy likely suspected he didn't have much time left due to his already incurred injuries plus the ones he was likely expecting to receive once he reached that peak that gave him the Sat Call signal,Ive always been curious as to why Murphy even handed Luttrell what ammo he had left anyways,seeing as how Luttrell still had most/all of his own ammo left which Murphy must have known eventhough he still gave it up?? There's no doubt in my mind that Murphy 100% sacrificed himself to get help to try to save his team,but I also feel like he done what he did to try and say he was sorry for ultimately being the one who made the decision to let those herders go.Theres truly no way to know whether any other decision he may have made would have kept Shah & his men from finding the team later on anyways, but it may have given the team a little more time to move further away and get help there sooner than it did.We'll never know though.IMO though,the herders were sent out to both help pin down the Seals actual location,but to also act as a distraction/diversion to give Shahs scumbags time to strategically position themselves in the optimal locations to do the most damage.If this is the way these things truly happened,not allowing the herders to go free wouldn't have mattered anyway since Shah had likely found them around this time & no amount of time would have given those Seals a fighting chance when they were surrounded on 3 ellivated sides. RIP to the 3 Seals plus the 16 Seals & Night Stalkers onboard Turbine 33.
It is odd to think about how certain circumstances can possibly change things so much.Although it's not related to Redwings or this video,& for the purpose of quick discussion,just think about the time you were in an accident that if only you or the offending driver would have literally left their last location just 10 seconds sooner or later than they/you did,the accident would likely have not happened or the same thinking can be applied to any type of situation.In the Redwings Operation,if Luttrell would not have been on that team,would a vote (about the goat herders) that was different than Luttrells, swayed Murphy to make a different decision than he did,eventhough his vote was really the only one that truly mattered since the team's officer has that bear to cross meaning his decision/choice on the subject will be the one that the team has to abide by.If they didn't have flex cuffs/zip ties,other options could have been used.The decision I would have made would be to ziptie the hands of each herder to the ankles of each herders so that they would have had to crawl on their hands and knees for their entire trip back to the village.I can guarantee you it would have taken them several hours when forced to use this method,but no matter how much none of us have the right to sit here and armchair quarterback their decisions,I would imagine that almost 100% of the people who have posted comments on this portion of the compromise,would all agree that just up and cutting them loose was the worst mistake that team made,especially considering that one of the herders tried to escape numerous times before the team actually cut them free.

I enjoyed listening because it brought back the memories of the movie and both of Marcus' books and a documentary of op redwings.

. In vietnam CCN MacVSog had 100% casualty rate when they ran 4-6 man teams into Laos and Cambodia. So it’s been a known fact if you get compromised in a confined area with steep terrain. You will lose the 4 man team. When the helo was shot down. All these assets were very close proximity. Within a very short distance of each other.

So private Blackburn that “Fell” in Somalia. A lot of people don’t know the real story. Which is the pilots flying his bird were extremely rusty on brown out conditions. So the pilots were hovering 20-40’ higher. So the tail of the 90’ rope was hanging 20-30’ in the air still. I’m not sure how long the rope was but I do know the tail of the rope was 20-40’ Above Ground Level. So poor Blackburn ran out of rope and fell. Of course they then blame it on him and say he let go of the rope. The truth is the pilots were out of position, hovering high. He got to the end of the rope and it was still 30’ in the air. This is why he survived. He only fell 20-40’. Had he fell all 90’ he would’ve been dead.

This account of how Marcus was found is different than how Green Beret Travis Osborn claimed that they found Marcus on the Team Never Quit podcast.
Travis said that Marcus was walking upright with a group of Afghans when he was first located.
Here, Tony says that Marcus was in a hole in the ground when he was first located.
Why would these two accounts of the first point of contact with Marcus be that different?
The difference is that Travis Osborn was together with Luttrell on that podcast while Tony Brook has no ties with Luttrell. Nicholas Moore, another Ranger with no ties with Luttrell, has said Luttrell was unable to provide them any details regarding the location of the other SEALs. Again, this is very different from Osborn's account, where Luttrell apparently marked his teammates location on his GPS which helped the Rangers find their bodies. No mention of this from Brooks or Moore. Interestingly enough, Moore is the only Ranger who brought up Luttrell's injuries, claiming the Rangers found him with nothing more than scratches, bruises, and a single gunshot wound in the butt. Not trying to completely discredit Osborn but being on a podcast together with Luttrell means he's not going to say anything that contradicts the selling story of the operation.

Yes you would think that everyone that made it that far did for a reason but we still never know whats going on with people. A lil bit of help goes a long way in team building and bonding. Ehhh......first off, video, taken from Surveillance Drones/Helicopter, showed that Blackburn just missed the rope...plain and simple....still a mystery as why.

Does anyone know whether it was the explosion from the rpg,some guys falling out of the back of the helo or the ultimate crashing to the ground of the helo that caused most/all of the deaths?? Was it even possible for any one of those guys to still be alive after the crash,even if it was just for minutes/hours?? I'm assuming because of very little remnants of the helo being left at all,the explosion likely killed them all before anything even hit the ground or side of the mountain.I was surprised to see that there was even any flat/level ground at all where the helo,or what was left of it,ended up coming to rest.A picture was taken of the men lying beside one another after the team recovered them all and it was flat.Not sure of the type of injuries one sustains when being subjected to that amount of damage in a helo shoot down?? I haven't found info about autopsy results of those poor guys or if any were even done.That shows the bravery of both the SEAL's and Night Stalkers aboard and also the pilots to be willing to enter an AO that hot without Apaches clearing it first.I saw a FLIR video days ago of what Apaches can do to the enemy and it was bad ass.I understand why they were in a hurry to get there asap,it's just too bad they wouldn't/didn't slow down for the Apaches.I assume they were only a few minutes behind the Chinooks,but I know that minutes can seem like hours to both the 4 guys on the ground and the entire team on the helo,it was just a terrible outcome is all.Luttrell was probably the only guy left still alive by the time that the Chinooks even arrived,but the guys on the helos didn't know that.They likely would've slowed down if they were privy to that info.RIP to all that perished both on the ground and on the helo.Theyre all heroes in my mind.

One thing that has always both baffled &
enraged me about Luttrells was the fact that eventhough he was a sniper just like Axelson,Luttrell was found to be carrying almost his entire stock of ammunition when he was rescued which also included a couple that Murphy unselfishly gave him either before he went up on the peak to make that Sat Call or after he crawled back down to his previous position where Luttrell was.So it appears as if Luttrell was doing more fleeing than shooting to both help himself and his teammates. Im aware that snipers are usually stationary when they're taking shots at the enemy and their accuracy will be much better while stationary,but Axleson didn't appear to have a problem firing back at the enemy while eluding,plus to make things even more difficult,midway through the fight, Axelson had to start doing this after being shot in the back of his head which actually turned out blinding him in his left eye which was depicted in the movie.BTW,Berg used the autopsies for Axelson,Deitz and Murphy to create the same wounds each Seal endured their fateful day.Axelson likely had very little to no ammo left by the time he took his last breath,which shows he truly done & used every last thing he could until he could fight/breathe no more.Murphy may be the one that was labeled the hero that day (& he deserves the label for giving his life to reach help) but IMO,Axelson was the one who truly took the last stand and that's likely the reason why he was quite a bit always from the other team members,& by team I'm not including Luttrell either due to the weakness he showed during that fight.Other than the fact that Murphy likely suspected he didn't have much time left due to his already incurred injuries plus the ones he was likely expecting to receive once he reached that peak that gave him the Sat Call signal,Ive always been curious as to why Murphy even handed Luttrell what ammo he had left anyways,seeing as how Luttrell still had most/all of his own ammo left which Murphy must have known eventhough he still gave it up??
There's no doubt in my mind that Murphy 100% sacrificed himself to get help to try to save his team,but I also feel like he done what he did to try and say he was sorry for ultimately being the one who made the decision to let those herders go.Theres truly no way to know whether any other decision he may have made would have kept Shah & his men from finding the team later on anyways, but it may have given the team a little more time to move further away and get help there sooner than it did.We'll never know though.IMO though,the herders were sent out to both help pin down the Seals actual location,but to also act as a distraction/diversion to give Shahs scumbags time to strategically position themselves in the optimal locations to do the most damage.If this is the way these things truly happened,not allowing the herders to go free wouldn't have mattered anyway since Shah had likely found them around this time & no amount of time would have given those Seals a fighting chance when they were surrounded on 3 ellivated sides.
RIP to the 3 Seals plus the 16 Seals & Night Stalkers onboard Turbine 33.
It is odd to think about how certain circumstances can possibly change things so much.Although it's not related to Redwings or this video,& for the purpose of quick discussion,just think about the time you were in an accident that if only you or the offending driver would have literally left their last location just 10 seconds sooner or later than they/you did,the accident would likely have not happened or the same thinking can be applied to any type of situation.In the Redwings Operation,if Luttrell would not have been on that team,would a vote (about the goat herders) that was different than Luttrells, swayed Murphy to make a different decision than he did,eventhough his vote was really the only one that truly mattered since the team's officer has that bear to cross meaning his decision/choice on the subject will be the one that the team has to abide by.If they didn't have flex cuffs/zip ties,other options could have been used.The decision I would have made would be to ziptie the hands of each herder to the ankles of each herders so that they would have had to crawl on their hands and knees for their entire trip back to the village.I can guarantee you it would have taken them several hours when forced to use this method,but no matter how much none of us have the right to sit here and armchair quarterback their decisions,I would imagine that almost 100% of the people who have posted comments on this portion of the compromise,would all agree that just up and cutting them loose was the worst mistake that team made,especially considering that one of the herders tried to escape numerous times before the team actually cut them free.
They set themselves up for failure at literally every possible way. Should have listened to the Marines that the SEALs yanked this mission away from.
