You still need a pen & paper to learn this. If you count the carrys on your hand then you could just write the unit number in the total. But for accuracy I quite like Trachtenberg's method of subtracting 11's from the running total as it allows you to carry out checks on all the numbers & total. However if you want speed the dot method is quicker.
