@45thnewsbrigade19An advanced species would wipe humanity out so be careful. Those who do not know this end up as willing girlfriends in prison, you overestimate yourselves but get humbled quick. You look good in a bra?
Makes perfect sense if you think about it... if the TV signal was sent in 1936 and their answer is received in, let's say, 2000, then the answer took 64 years; if they sent it back, let's say, 2 years after receiving it, after studying it a bit and thinking, it should be 64 - 2 = 62 years signal travel time (to and from); so the signal would travel at the speed of light for 62 / 2 = 31 years: Signal sent in 1936, received by them in 1967, sent back in 1969, arrival on earth in 2000. So their system would be 31 lightyears away.
Most of the General public does not understand physics, or the speed of light, or the time it takes for a radio signal to travel across a vacuum of space. But doing the math is correct. I attended a college program in avionics and learned light trig and electronics math and antenna math theory, 300, 000 meters per second or 186,000 thousand miles per hour is a light year.
The transmission from the aliens came from Vega, 25 light years (they say 26 in the movie) away, so if we use 26 years, that leaves the aliens 9 years of diplomatic decision making to decide if and what kind of message they would send to us. Probably less time than it would take us to do the same
The opening sequence of the movie foreshadows this plot point, showing us leaving Earth and travelling outwards, as our own radio and TV signals get older the further we travel, until no more manmade signals are present.... just the background radiation of space. BTW, their reply was received in 1987. The machine they construct took 12 years to build and was to be started on Dec 31, 1999.
Interesting fact: Jesse Owens, the african american who won most gold medals in the Olympic Games in Nazi Germany, said he was treated better in Germany than at ANY other time in his life while living in the US!

The opening sequence of the movie foreshadows the reason why this message was encoded in the signal from Vega. So many people I've asked about the opening shot simply missed the concept. We are "shot" into space from earth, as our POV travels outwards through our solar system, the Milky Way, our Local Group, cluster, supercluster, and onward, **accompanied by the sounds of earth radio and TV shows getting older and older** until they completely vanish, and we ultimately reach the background noise of space. The time vs distance traveled aren't scientifically accurate, but it is intended to show that we have been sending radio signals out into space for over a century.
Steady on, we haven't even gotten 100 light years out yet. The galaxy itself is 100,000 light years across and you're going on about superclusters. We don't even know if Hitler's speech is still going or has been obliterated by whatever is out there.

Or quite a century. The 1936 Olympic broadcast was the first powerful enough to penetrate the Earth’s magnetic field into space.
Steady on, we haven't even gotten 100 light years out yet. The galaxy itself is 100,000 light years across and you're going on about superclusters. We don't even know if Hitler's speech is still going or has been obliterated by whatever is out there.
@@matthew8153 I hate to think about what's out there now.....
"Fegelein, Stalin!!!!!!"
I’m coming home, Vgvrthv…
The reaction of most audience members would be similar to that of the Angela Bassett character in the next scene.
James Woods is trying so hard not to heil
"I declare open the Olympic Games of 1936 in Berlin , celebrating the XXI Olympiad of the modern era."
Yes Germany is SO much better off now without that man running it...
Tom Skerritt’s reaction at 0:12. Gold lmao
Oh great. The aliens are nazis.
@jshepard152
At least they have their Priority straight, no like us down here... Complete Mediocracy/Plutocracy.
(Aside from that, I don't believe in Intelligent Aliens;
Either there is nothing yet* and we will become the Aliens literally; Or its mostly bacteria and maybe giant fungus and Insects and even that's pushing)
