Trevor Horn started small and became huge. He spent his early career as a session musician, playing bass on cheap and nasty albums of hits covers, before producing mostly forgotten sides by John Howard and girlfriend Tina Charles. But his massive success as one-hit-wonder Buggles, “Video Killed The Radio Star,” gave him entry to the big league and before long he was producing landmark records with ABC and Malcolm McLaren.
Renowned as an early champion of then-new electronic technology, Horn traces his story to the brink of his superstardom with ZTT in his 2011 Red Bull Music Academy lecture.

Trevor used to be my boss. I worked at Sarm as an electronics engineer, servicing everything from SSL desks to tape machines. This was at the time of Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Grace Jones. Trevor is one of the nicest guys you could meet. Great times, great period of my life.
amazing times, i bet. chapeau. cannot say im not jealous
Wow! Such an honor. You're one lucky engineer
Firstly Trevor Horn is truely a music producing legend, full credit to Trevor for suffering being interviewed by the living dead of interviewers. Thank god for Trevor's Horns sense of humour and personality, as the interviewer totally killed the conversation throughout this footage.
Not prepared at all. Not engaged at all. That interviewer did not deserve the chance to interview with an icon like Trevor Horn. Thank god for Trevor Horn telling all those interesting facts about his career despite the sloth of an interviewer.
Worst interviewer ever, agreed.
Horn was great. Not so much the interviewer.
'It's pretty painful' says the interviewer. That was easy for him to say.
the interviewer is well informed, understands the context of the time periods when the music was made, lets trevor speak and doesn't interrupt him. he was a well equipped moderator. mind yourselves.
@@kenwhohe asked him for a 3 minute Cliffs Notes answer. that’s disrespectful and ridiculous.
The guy that made me want to be a music producer. Art of noise/FGTH f'n blew my mind to bits
Totally inspiring! I'd not known about his McLaren and ABC connections before watching this either 🙂
@@mightyV444 - I knew ABC but not Malcom.
too long? not long enough! I could listen to him dropping that wisdom all day. legend.
I am totally excited about this video being that long! 😀
If I was in that room, I'd be the first to shoot up at the end to ask questions. Sad crowd, poor interviewer, amazing genius who want's to go!
Been following Mr. Horn for decades and this is hands-down the best interview with him I’ve ever come across.
GOOD GRIEF!
I read some of the comments here about the interviewer and I thought “that’s a bit harsh, surely…” but I’m less than an hour into it, and it’s a tribute to Trevor that he didn’t just walk out (if there wasn’t an audience, maybe he would’ve?!)!🤯
I really appreciate that he took the time to tell the all the stories in detail.
Fantastic interview considering the interviewer comes across as quite rude and uninterested most of the time. Trevor Horn, one of the greatest producers/arrangers going!
A genius of monumental proportions.
Incredible stuff. Horn is such an inspiration. Shame he’s sitting next to a freshly painted wall out to dry. Liven up and appreciate the company you’re with.
Great interview. Particularly loved all the anecdotal stuff about Malcolm. Still laughing that someone stole Bowie's bag just to freak him out. Hats off to Trevor for giving us The Buggles, The Art Of Noise, Propaganda etc....
"Being singer in Yes was an amazing experience, never to be repeated" he says - And I just discovered the remake version of Yes' 'Fly From Here' album from 2016 with him on lead vocals! 😄😉
Grace Jones album by Trevor and other great musicians. Marvellous sound . Great videos also .
Horn is such an elite tier producer and sonic visionary, that only Phil Spector or George Martin can be cited in that same league. He is also a warm, witty and wise human being, who constantly during the interview references his late wife who was a huge influence. They clearly were made for one and another. Despite having a total idiot interview him he imparted a lot of his craft to the audience and told some great stories....
Well said. You have to give Horn credit for 90125 and Seal’s best tracks, among others. He made that.
Jesus, can the interviewer be more humourless?? Horn was funny.
Yeah, it's amazing red bull don't see it.
yeah the I'm not sure why that guy was doing the interviewing
Yes, terribly stiff and not very responsive a lot of the time. But man, Trev' is more than making up for it! I would've imagined him to be wayyy more serious! And what amazing stories! Am very grateful for stuff like this 😊
looks dead inside. even his hair didn't want to stay
Nevertheless, a very fruitful interview.
Man, Trevor please write a book about all these experiences ! love it
He has: Adventures in Modern Recording: From ABC to ZTT
The Lexicon of Love is the best Produced album of all time . It’s also my favorite album of all time . Thanks Trevor .
It's more consistently amazing than Trevor Horn's other peaks, only 90125 is as good throughout. Welcome to the Pleasuredome is too sprawling, Duck Rock only has a few great tracks, Slave to the Rhythm is just remixes of the greatest single ever.
Trevor Horn always was my idol, it makes me sad to see these young people not even knowing who they have the honour to listen to .... another writer is a bit strange, almost rude at times .... I would’ve had a ton of questions for trevor
Always nice to hear Trevor Horn about music, but really people, when all the music has to be trimmed/edited out that means there should be a change in copyright laws.
considering he produced it all - but hey, maybe red bull didn't want to pay the licencing
The Malcolm and Buffalo Girls stories are a hard act to follow.
"does that mean we cant smoke this" i adore this man.
The interviewer has the charm of a dying plastic plant! 😂 Great Injustice to Trevor Horn, who is not only a great music legend and a very funny and engaging speaker.
Great interview even though the interviewer was as warm and congenial as an iceberg.
Yeah I hate this fraud. Hope they fired him lol.
The interviewer (and I lose that term loosely) is a d*ckhead. Enough said.
@@linndrumfan1959 eh- he had his research down pat for charting a very long interview about a very long career - but - ya, he was pretty stiff.
@@mgabrysSF I've seen him in various other Red Bull interviews and he's been exactly the same. Then again he is German! 😉😂
it´s possibly a pathologic cause, something like autism, where the people seem to have no entrance into feeling humor, never laugh and make the people think they are just unappealing. but i can see your point. btw these copyright horror which makes it impossible to play entire songs even in such a discussion really sucks. it´s awful and has to get nullified.
The interviewer is totally uninspiring, wooden & uninterested considering he's talking to a legend. How the hell do people like that ever get that job? Looks like he doesn't want to be there & it's impinging his time.
My thoughts exactly; does he even know who Trevor is?
@@benjamindenton I agree with you both and it's not the first time at RB Music, they often have condescendant, even history and discography ignorants dickheads as host. It's a shame and I often wonder if that isn't simply due to a dumbed-down generational problem. He did the interview as a hobby, he actually works in IT.
I was just happy to hear Trevor talk . I would have asked way different questions . Trevor is the missing link between Prog Rock and New Wave . He is a legend.
Couldn't agree more. He killed the vibe more than Malcolm did with The World's Famous Supreme Team. Could listen to Trevor all day, a legend, the interviewer I hope I never have the misfortune to hear ever again. Charisma vacuum and terrible interviewer.
@@II-jv9yx I've just watched that part. 1:58:13 I can't believe the embarrassment, I'm cringing.
TH the real gent, continues unflustered for another 35mins?
2:04:56 Yet another friendly hint ignored?
2:20:28 I think he's losing patience now!
2:28:28 He's getting hungry!
2:33:19 Let the poor man go! Cring.
Trevor is the best !
A legendary producer, and seminal DJ.
Horn produced some legendary albums, great stuff this
what an idol. not only as a producer
LEGEND
22:05 Noooooooo!! We want to hear it! Why've all the good bits been removed?! 😞
AM ENJOYING IT LOVELY STUFF....FROM NAIROBI WITH LOVE
Ah Trevor Horn...I love the cats who make the record THE RECORD. Some individuals have that thing where you must buy what they produce, then listen on repeat and treasure their projects over time. I dig Seal b/c of the genius production work of Trevor Horn. Their calob might 've been bumpy but how incredible are Seal's albums. Fierce!!!!!!!
Lot of unneeded hate at the interviewee here. He's just a chill dude asking questions and letting the other guy do the talking. We need chill people in this crazy world
totally ! he gets the answers out. It's not meant to be about him after all...
Absolute Genius of Vibe! 🔥
He is such a gr8 & funny guy!
wish they did not cut all the music out of this. would have been nice to here it all.
Great guests, but my heart always sinks whenever I see this interviewer. What planet is that guy on?
❤️ from Canada 🇨🇦!
That was great man.
I don't believe for a single second RedBull couldn't arrange the rights to keep the music in this.
From now until Forever, when I hear that gun blasting Jon Anderson's eagle out of the sky, I will be L(aughing)M(y)
F(ucking)A(ss)O(ff)😂😂😂
I say hats off to the interviewer who was well prepared, had a great historical roadmap, didn’t get in the way, and enabled 2.5 friken hours of great music history, culture and knowledge.
Stop using alt accounts, we know it's you.
Trev' reminds me a lot of Jack Black in 'School Of Rock' singing about 'The Legend Of The Rent' when he's imitating Trevor Rabin's original 'Owner Of A Lonely Heart' demo! Classic! 😄
The Frankie Goes to Hollywood is the best album of the 1980's
Such a Genius
MASTER!
The man.
💚💞🌲SALUDOS THE BU👀LES PRESENTES🌳DESDE ES ESPAÑA🌳❤️
49:35 I would love to hear the World Famous Supreme Team outtakes. Have they ever been leaked?
@Red Bull Music Academy, please provide a list of all 52 tracks that Torsten Schmidt assembled. The vjdeo description has some, but even the linked lecture page doesn't have the full list.
Capo Trevor!!!!
Horn, Absolute gold. The guy interviewing should never ever do an interview again. Dreadful.
What an impressive guy!
Trevor Horn that's some CV this man has....
In addition to this, it's really quite interesting to hear producer Hugh Padgham talk about his experiences around working with Trevor Horn and YES on their 'Drama' album, in this recent interview and from 13.35 onwards: ruclips.net/video/SQMhhhQhpak/видео.html 🙂
what about his work with McCartney on flowers in the dirt??
Mc Cartney said T.Horn likes clean sounds and 'corrected' all the little accidents. But that's what makes music 'alive' for P.McCartney. He likes the ''one shot session'' giving a raw material. The corrected version wasn't was he wanted.
Great producer, love Trevor Horn !! Fab interview / TREPANIC :)
What's with the interviewer and the audience? Have some respect. It's Trevor Horn ffs.
Was it at Hans’s studio? The Lilly Yard.
Does anyone know what "Crazy Sounds" is? Trevor mentions it at 1:11:42.
Pretty sure he's referring to the Fairlight, you can read the full transcript here for better context www.redbullmusicacademy.com/lectures/trevor-horn-buggles-in-the-bassbin
@Andy JS Well, he mentions "that Malcolm McLaren tape", bits of which he fed into the Fairlight. I'm pretty sure the horn stabs and sampled drums heard throughout the track (in the intro, or especially the build-up before the guitar solo) come from a track by Funk Inc. called 'Kool Is Back.'
1:23:58 - i’d love to hear the blockheads version of relax!
Well it's on RUclips
@@kutzak236 😳
Ps the original frankie goes to Hollywood demo of slave to the rhythm is also on RUclips
@@kutzak236 any links please..?
Come on people, just search for them on RUclips with the terms you're looking for and you'll find them right away.
I remember those "not so memorable" Police re-recordings.😊
Interviewer is a smart a$$
at 25:10
what are your opinions on this?
i disagree. unless he’s talking about midi syncing across different instruments.
I find midi in the box to be pretty stable.
Horn was great. Not so much the interviewer.
'It's pretty painful' says the interviewer. That was easy for him to say.
Fankie goes to hollywood❤
Who ever said German's are dry and have no sense of humour!?!?
ZephyrCrypto I think the interviewer could be Spanish, since this interview was done in Madrid
I hear a Germanic accent also; "dis", "dat", "de", ...
@@biancachristie There's no way a Spaniard would have that kind of accent. His name's Torsten Schmidt.
daily.redbullmusicacademy.com/author/torsten-schmidt
It's really good they got the shittest interviewer going for this. Sort of balances out the genius of Horn.
41:30 actually Buffalo Gals was not the first British Rap record for sure. Wikka Wrap by Evasions came before Buffalo gals in 1981. Even Wham - "Wham Rap" came out 6 months before Buffalo Gals.
Rap death Mc Beth came out a few hundred years before that .
@@douglasbatley Yeah and Lil Jesus came out over 2000 years ago rapping
@@MediaBuster Jesus was not a rapper . He was a palitoy punk.
Where did this take place?
What year is this from? Trevor looks a lot younger than 2019.
2011
the interviewer? honnestly get a job dude! and btw smiling doesn't hurt
Great interview. Great interviewer , I don't think a lot of the people posting negative comments about the interviewer appreciate what a difficult gig this was . The type which would ask what's your favourite colour trev.
Stop using alt accounts, we know it's you.
Wardrobe clash or planned?
The youngsters are lost and not interested.
The guy interviewing him looks like a clone of Daniel Myer from Haujobb.
He put in a shift there, didn’t he? Blimey!
Trevor sounds like Joe Strummer when he talks
No. Joe Strummer Sounds like Trevor.
Great Producer! But I missed more about Propaganda Trevor did also?
Really love Trevor......but one point about melodic bass players......EVER HEARD OR WATCHED JOHN ENTWIHISTLE???.....THEN U WILL GET MY POINT.....❤
Nobody found a normal chair for Trevor ?
I am a camera.....................
Bloody hell what crawled up the interviewer’s arxe?
Once he realized how long he had been there @ 1:58:12, it felt like he just wanted it to end. I hope they paid him well.
A music academy that has no lapel mics!!! Really! Trevor worked so hard in this interview. Not a great advert for the Academy.
A Trevor Horn interview, ...without the music he made ?
The interviewer has all the charm and charisma of bacteria.
When Art of Noise came out I thought they had invented a new genre of music and would launch a thousand imitators, but alas, it didn't happen, mmm...White people.
Trevor Horn kept trying to leave after the first 90 minutes
Fek me...play the tunes...whats the point...copyright bollox...music is meant to be played !
Good interview, terrible interviewer and crowd.
The interviewers reactions to the Buffalo Gals stories are increasingly unbearable to watch, also his rather meh opinion on the song is not something I care for. Next time put someone there that is actually interested in hearing stories like Trevor's instead of this spoilt millennial.
Trevor was very gracious to this horrible host.
The interviewer is horrible,,,
Fantastic stories and story teller. Mindlessly boring interviewer. And leave the music in.
Get a new Presenter guys. This bloke doesnt have a clue.
