Kenny’s lyricism and depth of tone on “Someday We Will Be Free” is incredible. This set is of the highest of possibilities one could achieve in the jazz small group context. Junko’s maturity as a pianist on a lot of these tunes is superb. She knows when to be subtle and really dig in and explore textures with the group. Her ability to build a solo up from humble beginnings also cannot be overlooked. Three act structure. Brian Blades drum work is right in line with what’s need in this kind of style. He knows when to push and pull like the tides of an ocean going in an out. Very natural, no ego just let things play out no need to steer the ship - incredible musician. Chris Thomas is on point with this performance. Again, no ego and so much communication going on back and forth. Such humility is why it elevates this whole performance. The visuals, demeanor of the musicians, aura of the venue and sounds produced in this Blue Note set are in my honest opinion what the jazz art form is all about.
Wait...shorty straight bodied that piano solo on Jarhead? That was beyond ridulous. That was Iwakuni, Japan. And she was leaning into those scales with her shoulder - Suzuki Method. Classically trained, clearly, with composer cameos in her solos. That's called Virtue.
Because most people don't know or I guess hear the real thing when they hear it. Why is the other KG all over youtube for his pre Xmas ad for himself saying he is the best sax player. Just the richest. Most listen but do not hear the real thing when it presents it's self. Nobody makes the alto sound that good; period. Every player chasing old horns for 12K and wanting the same reed mouthpiece setup should know Kenny gets 90% of his sound from his head, not his horn.
So this the greatest sax player of today not that other skinny white guy all over RUclips with his bull skit. HA I can still see Miles after one of KG's amazing solos holding up a sign saying Kenny G." "That ain't nothing man, I can do that every night", and laughing. Around the world live from the 90s. Miles new the best and hired Kenny Garret.
Sometimes I wish filmmakers would just "focus" on capturing the performance instead of making their own little statements. The spastic camera stuff is annoying. The music already has all the energy needed.

@@rinahall Immanuel Wilkins, Braxton Cook, and countless others actually moving today's alto scene ...all count KG as their predominant influence.
