舞台は20XX年のクーデターで沈黙してしまった世界。元正規軍の兵士であるマルコとターマを操作して、捕虜を救出しながらクーデターの首謀者モーデン元帥を倒すために、武器とアイテムを駆使して戦っていくアクションゲーム。タイトルにもなっている味方戦車の「メタルスラッグ」が活躍する。ゲーム内容は非常にオーソドックスな戦争アクションゲームだったが、当時は既にインカムの良くないアクションゲームというジャンル自体が絶滅寸前となっており、その存在価値は高かった。開発は業務用から撤退してしまったアイレムの元スタッフが立ち上げたナスカが担当。全6ステージ。
ストーリー:
20XX年、モーデン元帥は、軍事クーデターによる覇権掌握を実行に移した。世界の主要都市はモーデン元帥の計画発令より、170時間でその統制下におかれ、抵抗力を失ってしまった。壊滅状態におちいった正規軍であったが、生き延びたメンバーはレジスタンスとなり、反撃の機会をうかがっていた。そんなある日、レジスタンスの秘密工場が襲われ、新型万能戦車『メタルスラッグ』が敵の手に落ちてしまった。正規軍特殊工作部隊ペルグリン・ファルコンズ、通称ＰＦ隊のマルコとターマの2人に元帥討伐の指令が下った・・・。

A scrolling 'run-and-gun' platform game for one or two players, Metal Slug is a humorous parody of war and specifically of World War II and the Nazis.
The game features six enemy-packed levels, referred to as 'missions'. Players start the game armed only with a pistol, but extra weapons can be picked up and used for greater firepower. Also, at certain points during a level players will find an unused 'Super Vehicle-001' - or Metal Slug - tank which can be entered and driven. The Metal Slug is slow-moving but has very powerful weapons. If the Slug takes too many hits it will break down and start to flash, the player must then quickly exit the vehicle before it explodes. The enemy troops also have vehicles at their disposal, such as tanks, boats and helicopters.
The levels are littered with bearded hostages who, when rescued, award players with either points bonuses (in the form of medals) or weapon power-ups. Available weapons are Heavy Machine Gun, Flame Shot, Rocket Launcher and Shotgun. Hand grenades are also available.
Each level ends with at least one large enemy 'Boss' vehicle that takes many hits to destroy. Once the boss has been destroyed, bonus points are awarded for each prisoner rescued. Further bonus points are awarded if the player's Metal Slug vehicle has survived the boss battle.

In the anthology for PS2, there's a story about the making from the devs, where the machine where they were testing the game actually caught on fire due to all the shit the cpu had to process at once when testing the game.

One of THE BEST run and gun games ever made, so much animation and background detail. The amount of destructible objects in this game is insane, not to mention secrets (hidden prisoners, alternate routes in MS3), great pulse pounding war music (I even like MS4, though not many care for it), this series really pushed the Neo Geo. MS 6 and MS7/XX weren't Neo Geo, but they continued the grand tradition of pulse pounding action that the previous games had. Thank you Metal Slug on Saturn, Metal Slug X on PS1, Metal Slug XX PSP, and the PS2 Metal Slug Anthology, for ensuring I have plenty Metal Slug for years to come (these are the games from the series that I own)

そしてノーミスプレイはすごい！！
ドット絵で 火炎放射器で焼き尽くされたり ショットガンで跡形もなく吹き飛ばされたり粉々に吹っ飛ばされるモーデン兵(ザコ)と何発の銃弾を食らっても死ななかったのに、
最後に「ワアアアアア！！！！！！」
と悲痛に絶叫して最期を遂げたラスボスモーデンに衝撃を受けました(デビルリバースモーデンは生きていたけど)。
これを観て世界的な有名な本作のNintendo SWITCH版をダウンロードしました。
かなり面白いですね！
ちなみに私の近所にかつてあったスーパーにメタルスラッグ2がありましたけど すぐスーパーがなくなると同時に消滅してしまいました・・・。
でもこの世界的に有名なメタルスラッグがNintendo SWITCH で できるようになったのは本当に素晴らしいことだと思います！！
主が上げた動画のプレイヤーのようにメタルスラッグ全作のノーミスプレイが出来るように私もがんばります！！

懐かしいな。2以降はクレームが来たからか、敵兵を火だるまに出来なくなったりとギャグ方向に走ってしまったのが何とも。
爆撃で吹っ飛ばされた敵兵士やギリダの砲台がもぎ取られたなど、なかなか面白かった。
ちなみに、第3ステージの中盤で便所にいる兵士がびっくりして隠れたシ―ンと、第５ステージのバイク通行禁止の標識付きゲ―ト上にミサイル発射台の兵士とゲ―ト前の警報を鳴らす兵士が破壊された時にかなり笑い受け易かった。
Metal slug 3 is the pinnacle of the series but I always thought the simplicity of the first game was gold

Fantastic game even to this day. The graphics just look FUN. The sounds / gameplay are perfect. Spent hundreds of pounds playing this in the arcade and you always got your moneys worth.

Plus two more characters, new slug vehicles and new enemies arrived on the following series.

No Morden = No Mars people = No MS 2,3,6 and 7. MS 4 might happen because the rest of the rebels might have joined the Amadeus army, and MS 5 would still happen since the enemies are from another army.
And if the Mars people appears, the regular army will just end them.
MS4 gives the impression that the rebels were following orders from Morden replicas, despite when at the last mission they're grouped with them being revealed as robots by the Players, so wouldn't they find that suspicious there are multiple Mordens in the base?
