- How to test the thermostat on your refrigerator. This video will show you how and why you should check the thermostat or cold control on your fridge.
If you refrigerator is not working at all, no compressor and no evaporator fan is running, this is what you should check.
First you want to make sure the refrigerator is not stuck in defrost. Then you want to go ahead and check the thermostat or also called cold control.

Yo dude, I can't thank you enough for this vid !! My Dad has cancer and is in pretty bad shape. His house is falling apart around him and I'm doing everything I possibly can to keep him in it. It's where he wants to be. His main sewer line recently backed up and I had to dig up his whole front yard to fix it. He was devastated at the condition his yard was left in so I landscaped his whole front yard for him. Well don't you know, 2 days later his fridge died. He was overwhelmed and extremely depressed at the same time thinking he was going to have to buy a new fridge. Thanks to you and your video, I was able to fix it for him. The relief that came over him was awesome. So again, thanks to you and your video, you helped me and my dad out tremendously. You have no idea. I wish there was something I could do in return for you helping us out. I can't thank you enough. God bless ya man and take care
Dan.

OMG!! I just got this fridge (used) last week. I LOVE this fridge! I was so bummed when I came home from grocery shopping & it was off! I thought it was the fan in the back, pulled it all apart & nothing. Found this video, put the back back together, did this and HALLELUJAH!!! I was on the verge of a BREAKDOWN trying to figure this out!! I frickin love RUclips and people like you who are willing to post videos to help!!! Thank you so much!!!
Dude....you legit saved my gf a minimum of $120 in repair bills. Fixed fridge...thanks to you!!.
My fridge was not defrosting. I had a warranty repair man out and after diagnosis he ordered a part. But then after he left my refrigerator didn't come back on at all. He said it would "restart" in 20 minutes. It was after 5PM on a Friday night. He had, from my assumption, put it in defrost and left it there. After an hour I was very upset. Finally I went to the internet. Watching your video I took a flat plier and inserted it as instructed and "voila" the unit came back on. I can't thank you enough. My refrigerator will remain on life support until the new part arrives. My food and sanity survive.
I'm a female with little money therefore, I have to learn to do things on my own. Thanks for the tutorial. I wished I would have found your tube sooner because I lost a good amount of food.
You saved my life man. Just bought $200 in groceries and though my refrigerator died. Defrost timer trick fixed it. Thanks!!
Thank you so much for your video!! I cannot believe I reached the age of 60 withouit knowing that my refrigerator goes into defrost 3 times a day!! I put some fresh groceries in my fridge and I decided to turn my dial to a bit colder and nothing happened, and then I tried to push it to even colder...still nothing! So I decided to sit down and have some pudding and found your video. Just at the end of it as I was deciding that i could, in fact, follow your guidelines...my fridge came on....it must have been in defrost!!! What a relief as money is really tight these days. Thank you again so much. Now I know what to do if it ever does really stop working!!
Sheri Venezia 😂 your comment made me laugh, but I'm happy your fridge is fixed!
Thank you so much, I've been so upset and overwhelmed all morning, because my refrigerator fan wouldn't work, and my brother and father just kept telling me to vacuum underneath it and figure it out myself... it's been so hot all week... I just want some cold water!!!!!!!!!! .... I stuck the screwdriver in and twisted it and it came back on.... Seriously, in tears, right now, because I'm so relieved.
You just saved me hundreds in groceries, and who knows how much in repairs. Thank you, sir!
He passed away right after this video. I just read your message because this is the only way I can see him and wanted to say thanks. He was great and even now he’s helping people. It makes my heart happy.
I would like to tell YOU thank you so much. My mother(disabled) called me last week and told me that her refrigerator was not working I been worried and praying about it cause I didn't have any money to get her another one. I went to go visit her today and found your video. Thank you for the simple walk through with instructions. I'm glad to say I was able to fix the refrigerator thanks to YOU. God is good
Great video!!!! Just as we were starting a party at my house I noticed the fridge in the garage was not cooling.. I watched your video and as soon as you showed how to get fix the defroster, I paused the video and ran to my garage. I found a flat head screw driver and turned the thing.. It worked!!!!. I will be having the defroster timer replaced.. thanks for your help buddy!!! Cold cokes and cold beer is a must for a party...lol
Fixed a fridge a couple of days ago. I checked the defrost timer after watching this video. I got a screwdriver, turned the timer and sure enough the fridge works again. Apparently the timer got stuck in defrost. It works fine now. It turns off to defrost like it's supposed to then turns back on after about 30 min.
This video saved me from having to call a repair person.
Bill, you were right! The defrost thermostats was the problem. Thank You so much. Its great having a working refrigerator again.
Steve
Bill passed away in 2016.
Ur a lifesaver! Ours went out today and didn't know why and almost ended up going to buy a new fridge ..... The defrost was on 🙁. Fridge is back in business cause of you thanks buddy !
Wow. Seriously thank you so much for this video! My fridge has done this three times in less than 3 months. I was worried that I needed to just get a new fridge. I turned it and it immediately started working and now I know what my next step is. I can definitely say I am subscribed. Thank you!!
I recently got a job as a maintenance tech for apartment communities and I had no experience at all in appliances. Your videos have helped so much. Fixing this type of simple refrigerators is a piece of cake now. Thank you!!
Bill Newberry is no longer with us sadly. He died in 2016.
As soon as I turned my defroster switch, everything kicked back on. Very informative video. Thank you!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I ordered a compressor fan and relay kit before I watched this video. On a whim I thought I'd go check the defrost timer as recommended. As soon as I turned it just a bit the fridge suddenly started running! You just saved me $100! Thank you so much!
You just saved my day!! Did what you said and my freezer/fridge is working again! Thank you for taking the time to show this video!God bless you!
Ms. Davis, Mr Newberry passed away. May God keep him in heaven and bless his wife, children and family.
How did Bill die?
Almost went out and got a new fridge, did what he said and fixed the prob in a few minutes and just one parts, saved hundreds.
legit almost just bought a new fridge! but tha ks to bil my fridge was in defrost mode somehow! and now the compressor and fan are back on and my fridge is back to cooling!! wish i could gove u a two thumbs up bro!!! tha ks again
Awesome! Glad I could help!
Bill Newberry Thank God your video was the 1st I came across, I just saved myself some money, my frig was definitely stuck in defrost mode. Saved by a pair of tweezers lol bc I couldn't find my screwdriver. Thanks
Bill Newberry
Hey Bill are you still around mate
Ditto! Thanks man.
You're an angel... my fridge temp went from 4c to 8c suddenly and I didn't want to callout maintenance as it's expensive, so I figured it shouldn't be hard to troubleshoot as I have a modern fridge. I came across your video clip followed the instructions and fou d it was the defrost problem... My fridge is back to 4c.... have a fab day..
This is a great video! Discovered that my problem was a faulty defrost timer. Thank you so much for your clear explanations.
As n extra test I fo is use a jumper wire to poke down in bothe wires by bypassing the timer if it comes on then thats a nother proof its a bad thermostat. I really enjoy your videos Bill you help me a lot
I AM SOOOO GRATEFUL TO YOU! You helped me find out exactly what happened to my fridge! Thank you so much!
Holy Cow. I turned the screw on the defrost mechanism until it clicked and I immediately felt cold air flowing out the vent for the first time. Someone a few doors down moved away and left it in their driveway and I rolled it home with a dolly and darn it, it wasn’t getting cold despite its newness and cleanliness. Crossing fingers while I type this heart felt thanks. Peace, man.
thanks boss for simple and very helpfull guide you share, i just got my fridge fix more cooling godbless.....
Having the same issues with my refrigerator, getting stuck in defrost mode, and leaking water. I turned the dial below the timer like he did and everything came on. I will order the the timer and the thermostat and change both part. this guy saved me expense from a new refrigerator and a technition. THANK YOU FOR THE tips tho.
Thanks! I was ready to go buy a new fridge and after watching tour video I am pretty sure its the defrost timer or maybe the thermostat. I feel like I could fix this myself but at least now I know it would be worth having someone come look at it. I have an appointment with someone I trust set up for tomorrow. Thank you
Awesome, let me know how you make out!

can you help me please
The frosting is running and cooling is not cooling what's the problem with it.??
Thank you so much! You are very good because you don't babble on about non-important issues. You get right to the point but do not miss a thing. I used your video and knew my timer did not work. I ordered it first, and installed it as you suggested. The heating rod went on, I heard the sizzling when the water dropped on the rod, the thermostat stopped it when the frost was off the coils, and the timer kicked back into cooling mode in 20 minutes. Thanks again!
Very informative, and you really know how to teach, the subject. thank you
I've gotta tell you, that you have the best videos out there on fixing a fridge. I've fixed all kinds of appliances, washers, dryers, fridges and YOU are awesome, this video in particular is just the one I need. I've watch a bunch today, yours are clear and very easy to learn and watch from. Thanks so much for sharing them!!! Much appreciated!!!

This works - I was afraid to do it myself (and couldn't bend into fridge) so I got a repairman anyway. He was impressed and said I really knew what I was talking about and only charged for coming out.
Thanks! This just saved me from calling the repairman!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! 2 mins in and immediately checked that defrost area and it was in fact, stuck! I’m back in business! Such a useful video!🙌🏽🙌🏽
Thank you so much brother. My defrost timer was stuck.
I really appreciate your patience and detailed explanation. I checked my fridge for both possible problems and I followed your instructions step by step. My fridge is healthy again. I feel so proud of my self. Muchisimas gracias, Bill.
Sadly Bill Newberry is no longer with us. Bill doed in 2016. He was 38 years old. I will continue to watch these videos on his memory.

Well done for the good job. Please my refrigerator compressor is working but it does not supply heat to the condenser coil and it makes the freezer not to cool at all. What could have happened?
Lol 🤦♂️
Woke up this morning to a dripping refrigerator. No compressor, no fan but lights were working. I cleaned the coils and assumed the compressor had overheated and was looking for A reset button (if there even is one). I searched for "refrigerator not cooling" and found this video. Checking the thermostat and the continuity were not in my realm of handyman expertise. I turned the thermostat screw like Bill said and every thing kick on. What a relief. I'm off to the parts store for a new themostat. Thanks a bunch Bill! PS: My wife said I'm a Superman but I said I'm much more - I'm a REPAIRMAN!
FOLLOW-UP: I may just be a lower case "repairman". I had not turned the thermostat screw but the defroster timer screw. When the refrigerator came to life after turning the screw, I assumed the defrost timer was bad and replaced it. However, the refrigerator is still not cooling and the freezer is not freezing, i.e., everything is still getting warmer even though I hear the fan running. I can't say if the compressor is running. I did the continuity check on the thermostat and the test was good since there was a beep from the tester when the temperature setting was in an ON position (1 through 6) and there was an "open line" (OL) when the temperature setting was in the OFF position.
For the moment, I am at a loss.
Paul Martin Put your hand on top of the compressor, if it's warm or hot it's running. If the compressor is turned on an off quickly, it will not fire up right away. Leave the fridge unplugged for 30 minutes then plug it in.
I don't know how long the fridge was running when you say it was still not cooling.
Let me know how you make out!
Bill Newberry Here is what I did before reading your email above. I watched your video on testing the refrigerator compressor. After unplugging the refrigerator and accessing the compressor area, I checked the continuity on each of the three prongs where the relay plugs into the compressor with an ohm tester. The top middle prong was giving readings all over the place and in the hundreds. I thought my connection between the tester prong and the compressor prong must be weak so I rub the tester prong back and forth across the top middle prong and got a reading in the range mentioned in your compressor video. The top middle prong appeared to have a dark, crusty, corrosion that I cleaned off with a small wire brush. I reinstalled the relay, plugged in the refrigerator and the compressor started humming (like normal I assume). Within an hour or so, water stopped dripping from the freezer and the next morning everything in the freezer was solidly frozen.
I think my original suspicion that the defrost timer was bad may have coincidentally been when the refrigerator was doing a normal defrost mode but since everything was thawing, and I had not checked or heard the compressor, I assumed the defrost timer was bad. I replaced the defrost timer and still had no cooling. Then I went to your test the compressor video which lead me to the crusty compressor prong.
So do you think the problem was the crusty prong (which is located just under the evaporation tray so it is a humid area) or is the compressor on borrowed time? I just texted my son and he said the refrigerator is still working and this is about 18 hours after I discovered the corrosion and cleaned up the prong and the refrigerator started working again.
Bill Newberry yeah i checked out but that's compressor warm and hot ,but its problem is that its working only 10 second but its keep silent 2 mintue i don't what problem can you help me
Bill Newberry plz can you tell e what i do ??
Very Helpful. However I have a question... Mine isn't cooling. Fan is working at the backside bottom of refrigerator. I did the click thing on the defrost timer. Noticed it either turned fan on or turned it off. Still no cooling. So I went to check the thermostat. I'm not sure how you tell on that. You said open close circuit but I can't tell that apart on mine. Sorry if I'm not making sense. I've never had refrigerator problems before. All new to me :)
absolutely wonderful advise!!! I had an old fridge in the garage and wanted to use it for labor day bbq and it wasn't working. I was devastated..turned the defrost timer and BAM it went to humming. best sound ever
Does this only apply to the freezer? Because my freezer works but not the fridge
Yes exactly mine is the same freezer works not the bottom part
same here freezer works but not the fridge
usually it is low on gass needs a top up.
Im assuming from what he said some models have 2 temp sensors and maybe 2 defrost timers
Hey Bill same as the rest of the folks on this thread. Freezer's fine, bottom's not cooling. Would replacing the piece that opens/closes the circuit resolve this issue?
Where have you been all my life when all the fridges we owned went kaput?! Thank you for this very easy hands on tutoring video. Fridge NOW works, yay!!
Bill Newberry died in 2016. That is why he is no longer on RUclips. He was a great teacher.
Hi Bill
I have a Whirlpool Fridge Freezer, freezer is working fine but fridge compartment is not cooling at all. Please tell me what i should be checking! My dad is away at the moment..and mum and i are puzzled with the situation!
Thank you in advance!
Tell your father to get back NOW!
Amy Tsang boy I have the same problem I don't find any air flow in the back of the fridge coming from the freezer into the refrigerator there's something wrong with my spinning motor fan in the freezer. maybe my 16-year old fridge the fan may be slowing down therefore it's hardly a trace of air blowing through the air duct in the fact so my temperature is going up in the fridge specially doing this heat wave the past 3 days New York go to the other videos free my fun in answer to your question it may be ice accumulating in the air flow duct or your fan may not be blowing as fast as it used to. so check the other videos on RUclips with the same question "cold freezer warm fridge"
Amy Tsang .check your timer
Hello Amy, Try defrost your freezer and plug it back in. It worked for me. Cheers!
See this.... ruclips.net/video/45fPPzee364/видео.html
I'd bet it's the damper. Common with this issue.
Dude this video is amazing. I have a used fridge that runs some days, doesn't run at all other days. Was about to go buy a brand new fridge when I found your video. Going to wait for its next 'lazy day' and see if this is the fix. Thanks for helping with the diagnostic journey, this is the best video on it I've found.
try this again ,in back of freezer temp dial is not working,,and hearing a humming sound.when humming stops everything works properly again
You're the man. came home to thawed meat, etc in the freezer. Tried the defrost timer and that did the trick. Put a cup of water in the freezer for a couple of days to keep an eye on it. May just replace the defrost timer just in case.
what if the compressor and the fan comes on once you plug it in and it's still not getting cold?
I have the same problem. Anyone can HELP?Thanks
u need to deforst freezer. its blocking the gaps to that go to tge fridge
I have the same problem,has been off for 5 months now....no blockage..lol

Thanks Bill! I heard a ticking noise in the refrigerator, and things seemed a bit warm. I tried your screwdriver trick, and HUMMMM! The timer is cheap, and I can keep this old reliable beast a bit longer. Thanks from a believer in the old style fridges.
man you save my life from my wife from killing me lol =D
Wives can be dangerous sometimes.
Wow, I can not believe how easy of a fix that was. Knowledge is power.
What if it's running, but not cooling?
my fridge also run only with the fan but didn't cooled. i ask the techncian and he said that the engine is broke and advised me to buy a new fridge. is it true ?
Obviously not true. There is no "engine" in a refrigerator freezer. Educate yourself.

You just saved my xmas, no one is working today and we bought food for tonight but the fridge was not working I was worried until I saw your vid thanks😀
Just used your video, worked very well thank you. My defrost controller didn't have a slot for a flat head screwdriver. It only had a button I had to hold for 6 secs to reset the defroster. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
holy shit you are such a savior with all of these fridge videos!! thank you for being so concise, showing what you're talking about, and being overall helpful!
Bill Newberry died in the 2016!
Thanks for explaining tasks such as this in terms the typical homeowner without experience can understand.
Your efforts are appreciated!
This is good info. I did as instructed, and then disconnected the control to check for continuity with a voltage tester. Got no reading, but just to make sure I took a piece of 14 ga wire and put a jumper between the two leads (unplug first!). Then, I plugged the unit in and the compressor started running, so it's clearly the temp control. 11 year old Amana. $70 for the new part.
DUDE YOU ARE THE MAN!
Just got a bunch of farm fresh chicken and beef, and I was panicking as it's late and the fridge went out. This fixed it 100%. YOU ROCK
Thank you!! You are awesome you have a video for all the issues I have. I'm a single mom and can't buy new, thank you for helping me fix what I have. Life is rough enough without taking away appliances. You explain things very well and talk everything out. Thank you. Thank you! This is what I think the internet truelly was for to help each other by just Sharing good vibes and what we know. God bless and I loved the roosters in the other video felt like I was home. ;)
You just saved me hundreds of dollars 😃 my fridge had gone into defrost mode. THANK YOU!!!💕💕💕
Bill Newberry died in 2016.
This video was dead on what I needed to figure out what was happening as my fridge non-freezer section would be tend to be warm while the freezer seemed to be going thru thaw freeze type cycles.
From prior researching I had started to think was frost build up/melt cycle in the auto defrost section located behind the freezer. But from this video I learned to test the DEFROST TIMER. Sure enough I did as shown in this video, turning via screwdriver, and the compressor and evaporator kicked right on. Boom, problem identified, stuck in defrost cycle neediing new defrost timer..
Bill, Thank you for your video. Very concise and logical in order in which to test things. Have book marked it for future reference. Much appreciated.
Thanks for the informative video. I just got a job as a service technician for a large apartment company. This was a lot of useful information!!
I watched this video yesterday, as our fridge stopped working three days ago; freezer working fine. I did what you said; nothing changed. Called an appliance repair man. This morning I woke up to my refrigerator working again. Cancelled the repair man. Thank you so much. Even a girl can do this!
Thank you for saving my refrigerator. You are a legend Bill and i will continue to use your videos for all my appliance issues RIP 🙏
you are a credit to our species.....teaching for free, you're a great guy Mr. Bill!
Hi Bill, and Thanks for helping me out with my Whirlpool. Mine was stuck in the defrost mode cycle. I had no idea there was an adjustment to forward the cycle. Once I did that , and turned it, the refrigerator started to work again like magic. I was ready to go out, and by a New Refrigerator. Thanks for your expertise. James
Many Thanks. Just a while ago my wife calls me telling me that the fridge stopped working, coincidentally on a very hot day in the tropics.
Will definitely do all the tests. Wish me luck.
Thank you so much for posting this video! My refrigerator stopped working didn't cool at all and I turned the defrost dial just like you explained and sure enough it started working again.
Thank you so much! This fix worked for me on a weekend when I had a work deadline and not time for a fridge problem!
thank you very very very much....I LOVE YOU :D ......saw other vodeos before this.....checked everything at the back and everything is ok.....then a video from SEARS said check the blue and red wire inside....they are ok...then the guy in the video said could be the control circuit...that made me so sad....THEN FOUND YOUR VIDEO!!!!!!! after turning that defroster thing my fridge is now working again....if somebody has a problem like this it would be best to try the defroster first since its the easiest....again thank you very much!!!!!!!!!!!!
Much thx for posting the video! I have this exact problem with my Frigidaire frs262zth with the defrost timer. Lights on but no fan and no compressor humming. After watching your video, I look for defrost timer and its location is on the bottom left corner of the fridge for this model....not an easy find. After adjusting the defrost time, all the fans and compressor are running again. Great job in explaining the problem.
Oh my god, turning that little dial to take my refrigerator out of defrost turned my bad day into a good one! I thought I was going to have to get a new compressor or a new fridge! Thank you so, so much for your videos!
Thanks! Your are da Man. I had just cleaned up around the fridge, plugged it back in and it was Dead. I was in Panic mode, already to throw out the food, buy a new fridge then whatched the video, turned the timer switch a tweek,
and back on... Great Thanks
Dear Mr.Bill thanks a lot as my refrigerator fixed because of your video, hats off dear, you are the real Hero.
Excellent! Verified the defrost switch and motor were working. Turns out the plastic evap fan impeller had popped off the shaft.
Thank you! This was it, the defrost timer! I heard weird clicking noises for a while (which i now know was the timer), and when the noise stopped, so did the fan and compressor. Only lights were working.
Thank you so much! I'm not sure if leakage is the only problem with my Frigidaire, but following the first steps of cleaning the condensation tray stopped the water leak and I think food in the main area is cooler than it has been over the past few days. The tube coming from the tray was loaded with gunk and nothing was getting through.
Hi Bill. I've had ongoing issues with an old used Kenmore fridge that looks very similar to the one behind you. The fridge and freezer have been cooling, but not getting cold enough. Somedays it seems to work slightly better than others, but neither ever get as cold as they should. At first I tried simply unplugging the fridge, taking out the panels in the freezers and getting rid of all the ice. Several days went by and the fridge/freezer still weren't getting cold enough, so I replaced the defrost timer with a new one I ordered. The new defrost timer seems to be working properly, but the fridge/freezer still aren't fully cooling and the frost ice in the freezer piled up once again. I'm currently melting the ice out of the freezer again, hoping that once I do that with a new defrost timer in, it will work better this time. I'm not experienced as a handyman, or with appliance repair, so I'm using advice from videos like this and trying anything out... The fridge is running properly and not spending too much time in defrost, so I don't think the thermostat is the problem, but could it be?... The coils are behind the fridge, and they are clean and look good (no dust/ice build up). Not sure if the root of the problem is in the freezer or the fridge and I'm kind of stumped on what to check next... The fan seems to be working because there is cold air blowing in both the freezer and fridge, just neither getting cold enough... Sorry to the long, confused message, just trying to see if you have a pointer on what to check or try next. Thanks!
I cut the power off and did exactly what you said, i had noticed that little small hole at the bottom of the cover, but didn't want to mess with it, and then after i took the cover off, and put it back on I noticed the refrigerator light bulb wasn't on when i cut the power back on even i didn't turn the switch back on in my Frigidaire refrigerator, so i cut the power bff to take another look at it again, the refrigerator light bulb still wasn't on, so i turn the dail and it came on Thanks for the step by step video without skiping over anything now i know what part to replace 👍
Great video, thanks. The coil in my freezer is frozen. Thanks to your video, I was able to troubleshoot all of the parts you mentioned, and found out that the defrost thermostat is bad in my unit.
Thanks for an easy to follow concise directions and explanation. Saved me repair costs and lost food!
Hi Bill, awesome video. I have an Inglis and the switch was fine. The defrost unit is solid state with no dial so I took it out and tapped the relay with the handle end of a screwdriver. Also noticed a capacitor looked a little swollen so I shorted it then put it all back together TADA! It's working! Thanks!
Wow if I found your video sooner would of saved me some money. I changed the fan and relay and even the defrost. But last one is the thermostat hopefully it works.
Thanks , just turned the timer out of defrost and everything started working, just need to order a new one , thanks for the great simple to understand help.
Another great, helpful video. Clear, concise and to the point. Thanks
Thanks Bill. Video and explanation very clear. Estate Whirlpool refrigerator/freezer hardly cooling after a few issues with puddles on the floor. Is it possible the combination of both these issues means a bad defrost timer?
Previously called repairman for the water issues. He initially stated that I must have "dropped ice" or "spilled some water" without noticing. Duh! On the 2nd call, he stated the water catcher was crooked and the water must have spilled out. He blamed me for that too and said I must have "moved" the refrigerator. I was not charged for the 2nd visit because I complained to his wife. His visit fee is $50 plus parts/ labor. ^_^
At least now I am more informed and can ask questions and see what a repair person is checking or not checking i.e. check coils in freezer for frost build up and / or possibly bad defrost timer.
thanks a bunch Bill! our kitchenaid (spare fridge) needed the defrost thermostat, and before this our freezer was barely 28 degrees and fridge 50--now after a Major defrost and this fix its minus 20 and 36 degrees like it should be. looks like our $150 twenty yr old craigslist buy has a few more yrs left in it after all!!
Thanks! Very clearly explained. I am going to check this myself today. My fridge is not getting as cold as it should, and my freezer section is not freezing but staying in about the 36 degree range.
Mine is doing the exact same thing.!
Hi Bill, Thank you for the video first of all. I have changed the thermostat 5 months ago after I found your videos. My Sanyo SR-1030S was not cooling enough but the freezer works fine. Now I have the same problem again. I am not sure where should start now since the thermostat is changed, I also tested the defrost timer which works fine.
Thank you so much for your help
Oh also fan is running fine and no ice blocking the cool air from freezer either.
I know this is an old video but I am so thankful to have watched this b4 a company came to troubleshoot y my fridge/ freezer wasn’t cooling. I put the screw driver and all came on. Tech did the same and all turned on. They want $165 to do all and I need it fixed ASAP so I know for a $20-35 part I’ll eat the $165 cause I saved all my food in the fridge plus the price of a new fridge
God bless RUclips and people that we never met who help us
Thanks for taking the time to make this video.... You are working on what looks like my model.... Very helpful!
Hi Bill,
i have a Fridgidaire also and had freezer issues wherein the ice cream melted and meats thawed. So i did these tests for the defrost timer and the thermostat. I wound the timer to defrost and after 30 minutes it did turn back on but its still not cold enough to freeze the meats and ice cream.
You. Are. Awesome. Was about to replace compressor or maybe starter relay. But you helped me determine that it's the defrost timer. Saved me time, money, and frustration as I wouldve ordered the wrong part(s). Correct part now ordered.
Thank You for the informative video. Our refrigerator quit working out of the blue. Ten years old Frigidaire top freezer. No compressor, no condensor fan motor running. Started to take the top shelf out and going to disconnect power next,,,tapped the thermostat housing and started running compressor and cond fan!! Sidenote Our ice maker quit working and just ordered a new icemaker 'kit'. wonder if unplugging this (yesterday) from back panel ,,not unplugged,,,I know,,,not very smart may have tweaked something. Anyway working fine now after watching your video. Barry
Thanks man! Your simple video help me fix my problem in less then five mins
It's as simple as that (most of the time). Great video and explanation. Anyone with a little bit of mechanical aptitude can troubleshoot them
Thank you for making this video. It is very helpful in diagnosing issue with no compressor and no fan with warm fridge.
Bill, you have great videos, very easy to understand and helpful. Thanks for taking the time to help people. I have a Frigidaire that looks very similar to the ones in this video. about 10 days ago the refrigerator was not cooling well but the freezer was ok. I found the freezer to be all iced up so I thawed it out completely, put everything back together. It seemed to be ok but the icemaker would not cycle. I could get it to make one tray at a time by manually cycling the gear for a couple of days. Now about 10 days after I melted all the ice out of the back of the freezer, it has warmed up gradually over time to where the freezer is not freezing. I keep a couple items in there to watch but they are completely thawed out. Just now I noticed some frost on the back panel. The refrigerator (lower) compartment is just marginally cool. I turned the control all the way to coldest setting hoping to not lose my food. Can you help me?
+Jeffery Moon OK so the day I wrote the above statement I looked again inside and the frost I noticed was all over the coils blocking air flow to the fridge but the freezer is still not freezing. That's what bugs me about this unit: I don't understand why the freezer is never cold enough to freeze water plus the coils keep frosting up.
+Jeffery Moon Ignoring that the freezer is not freezing, I went ahead and performed the checks you suggested: manually cycling the defrost timer into defrost mode (heater never came on), checked heater with meter (about 35 ohms), then the thermostat in ice water and wouldn't you know it- I actually left it in the ice water for like 15 minutes and it tested wide open...
This video worked !! I literally just fixed my fridge buy watching this video, and probably saved tons of money. thanks !
