Same character different animals. Apples and Onions. Perfect showcase of of subjectivity and objectivity. I like both figures and they have completely different strengths. That’s why I’m keeping the MT seekers in addition to the Takara units. No losers here in my opinion. If you have the MT and don’t plan on getting the Takara, you still win. Great showcase!

I just don't see why so many people think the head on the Takara is too big. I think it's perfect, and the MT being so small just makes it look bigger in comparison.

I actually agree, I've been watching the cartoon just to make sure and even though they sometimes represent Starscream with a smaller head (nothing close to the Maketoys size) they normally give him a head with the exact same proportions Takara gave MP-52.

Good evening from me as well. Very good work in this comparison. I just wanted to mention that, if you see the g 1 cartoon, the bottom of the jet is exactly as presented by takara in this particular starscream. In general, however, I did not like it very much as a figure, since I consider it very expensive and with serious problems in the paint job. Also, something that concerns me as for the figure's head, is that the neck is not visible at all, leading to the fact that the overall picture is a bit strange. Probably my favorite is still the starscream of Yes Model. Deformation Space (DS-001) also looks very good. Keep up the good work!!!

The Maketoys does a couple of things better, but the Takara is unmistakably Starscream. And mine doesn’t have any major QC issues (just a small stress mark and tiny nick in the die-cast.
    Overpriced? Maybe. But no regrets.

I received the gifted MP-52 earlier this week. As I figured would be the case, your original review of it was off. The only problem I have with MP-52 is the price. I have zero QC issues. It is an awesome representation of the G-1 Starscream. Waaaay too much made out of his head size when the Maketoys head size is the real problem. Maketoys mold was the best for a few years. It is still really good based off of your 7-5 score and I agree with the majority of your points. It holds up. But I would suggest for yourself since you own both SC molds for the moment... stand both the Maketoys and MP-52 next to TT Megatron. Pose them out fairly. Don't half @ss the MP-52 poses and toss him around because of your TT vendetta. Take photos. Compare. There is no competition there. Maketoys fades to the back to MP-52.

What’s so bitter sweet to me about both of these guys is that it almost feels like they’re both doing too much, while having many shortcomings. there is so much engineering in both of them but neither feel as solid as something like the NewAge seekers. Idk judging by the images of the new 3P deformation space Starscream, which seems to be using a lot of newages engineering, I think the best mp Starscream may still be to come. Either of these are fine, but for me these both seem like lateral promotions, rather than an upgrade from one another.

With aircraft altmodes enjoy stylized robot modes more especially when the altmode looks like the actual aircraft. The aircraft altmode has to be as accurate as possible for me. The original masterpiece Starscream altmode looks the best from the underside but I think that the second one is the best overall.

It's just chance but 9 times out of 10 when BSF gets a bad copy I (and EmGo) luck out with a good copy. Most of the time if I didn't watch BSF I'd never know about supposedly wide spread QC. As someone who has done a lot of customer service and someone who has studied human behavior people who have a negative experience tend to shout it from the mountain tops and people that have a positive experience stay quiet because they assume that everyone else has had a positive experience. And people who are vocal both ways tend to be louder about the bad. Yes there are exceptions, I'm talking about the masses.

The gaps in the forearms and the delicate, folding tail fins always bothered when I owned MT Meteor. Not to mention the empty undersides of the wings. It’s why I was immediately drawn to the new MP Starscream from Takara-Tomy. The prototype looked better than the final product, at least to me. As long as a collector doesn’t mind spending the money, then I guess they’re getting the better toy from MP Starscream 3.0. Having bought every version of the previous mold, minus whatever clear variants there were, I don’t have any love lost for that one. Nice comparison as usual, but I do not understand why you keep calling it "version 3.0" when the box has a "2.0" clearly printed on it, so that's what takara wants to call it (they obviously consider the mp-11 as a 1.5 version, which it in fact was as it was not a complete new figure). I am saying cause it might cause confusion, especially for people new to this world.

  • @iamtheomnimonkey

100% fair considering that you got a bad copy of Takara's version and you don't like the "overly clean" super toon look. I love that Takara won despite you liking Maketoys better. This proves that you are working hard to be impartial. Well done.
Now some personal notes. Food for thought.
    1. Takara can also do the strangling Starscream without swapping out a part. Takara does it with articulation. There are pics online demonstrating this.
    2. Some copies don't have the loose joints that yours does.
    3. I totally understand that for presence your family is unanimous with Maketoys being better and therefore it wins that category for you, however other people's families disagree. My point is that presence is too subjective.
    4. I personally disagree on some of your points, but that's awesome because your opinion is equal to mine.
At the end of the day I say thanks for your time and passion!

Great breakdown of everything, seemed pretty objective. When it comes to the original 1984 bots in the MP line, I think Takara has made the best version of all the ones they have released so far compared to the 3p options. I was so ready to get Meteor until I saw MP-52 and never looked back. Meteor is an excellent looking figure, but I can't get past that head and opaque canopy. Interesting and a very well-balanced video.
I don't want to be pedantic but the Maketoys does have a double jointed knee. Had it taken articulation, that would have been 6-6! I don't recall how much MT lost by but tie-ing this joint up on top of the importance of a waist swivel would, in my opinion be a fair victory in articulation.
I do think the Takara is better but my Maketoys are very good and I'll be sticking with them. I'm in for the full set so already have wing fillers on my Starscream. The coneheads also have replaced the C-clip with a better solution. I think Maketoys could persuade me to pick up an upgrade kit. Replacement C-clip joints, maybe a coronation set. If they could retrofit angle-able should vanes, that'd put them over-the-top!

But definite downfalls for Takara... especially in the legs and posing... it can be balanced easy enough but not as solid as I would like. and as much as I love the jet mode of the Takara ... the clean underside of the MakeToys is so.... sleek. Have you thought about weighting? Nothing complicated, but on a per-case basis. In my opinion the maketoys waist should add more than just one check mark in their category. A figure with no waist swivel simply should not win overall articulation unless the waist is literally the only joint on the other figure. No waist swivel is utterly inexcusable

I think the Takara Tomy Starscream looks so much better that it doesn't even seem like the Maketoys one is competing on the same level.
If you don't like the look on the Takara one, you don't like the look on the original cartoon Starscream... which is completely fair even though not a reason to say that the Maketoys is objectively better unless they were trying to make a figure that was inspired by the original cartoon design, not trying to look exactly like it and if that is in fact true they shouldn't be compared to one another because Takara Tomy set out to be as close as possible to the original cartoon Starscream which they did spectacularly well.
The only two things that the Takara Tomy MP-52 Starscream has against it are the price point and the fact that for that price point the tolerances should be perfect to a fault.
I can't understand why ppl hate the Takara Tomy MPs so much, unless they're mad because they're too expensive and even though I can agree with that I don't think they are worst with each release be it in terms of quality or look. In fact I think they never looked better then they do now and until today I was never disappointed with the quality on an original Takara MP, quite the opposite, normally they feel like they are a bit above almost all the other companies in terms of both look and quality. In my opinion and experience not even Fans Toys or MMC, my two favorite 3rd party companies, are better then Takara Tomy, they some times get very close but never better.
Thanks for the comparison Mr. Skullface.

I think the negativity towards official MPs just comes from the bad ratio of price to the level of "fit and finish". When I pay 300 bucks for a Fanstoys figure, the paint will almost certainly be pristine, the joints are almost always tight and the pieces will snap together perfectly, and hardware faiure is rare, and usually isolated to single part that is easy to get a replacement for. With Takara, I usually see tons of blemishes and imperfections in the paint apps and molding, the joints tend to be way more dubious, the figure is way more likely to break or have compromised plastic, and if it breaks it's difficult or impossible to get a replacement.
Like, I've got both MP-36 and Roadking in front of me right now, I can't see I single flaw on Roadking, I imagine someone at the factory pored over him with OCD level of scruitiny. MP-36 has paint imperfections and gaps where panels don't fit together great, I imagine he was pumped through the factory much more quickly and without as close of an inspection, which is to be expected because Takara is a bigger company producing figures on a larger scale whereas Fanstoys makes figures more as a passion project on the side that blew up and became super popular
And this goes for all my figures. Looking over at my MP Ironhide I see a little paint spotch on his head crest, some scuffs in the pastic on his legs, etc. Looking at my MP Rodimus I see this scuff right on his shoulder and his face won't sit flush in his helmet. Looking at MP Prowl his paint apps are just pitiful, and that's after I did my own touch ups to the worst parts. Looking at MP Shockwave he's got this weird little dent right in his chest piece. Meanwhile looking over at my Fanstoys figures I can't see a single flaw, except occasionally a paint chip caused during transformation (which also occurs on Takara figures).
Obviously everyone has their own threshold for what bothers them when looking at a figure, and a lot of collectors wouldn't even notice the flaws that irk me, but the point is there's a reason Fanstoys is pulling so many people in lately while Takara is pushing so many people away.

@@BingBong67489 I've had absoloutly the opposite experience. My Fans Toys figures have more QC issues than any other company: paint chips, loose joints, and a LOT of breaks. I have absolutely never had a single paint chip, break, or other QC issues with Takara.
I only get Fans Toys because Takara hasn't made those characters yet.

I love my Fans Toys TF action figures but I don't think they are better then the Takara Tomy ones.
Up until the release of MP-32 I completely ignored the MP line (with the exception of MP-1) but all the releases following MP-32 have been the best representations of those characters and excellent TF action figures. I own them all and I will hardly ever substitute them unless there's a real breakthrough in technology that allows the paint, engineering, hardware and materials to achieve the next level.
The way ppl describe what they feel when dealing with an original Takara Tomy MP gives me the impression that they must have dealt with a KO instead because I get that same feeling when I'm messing with a KO myself. The funny thing is that ppl who deal with KOs normally say they are as good as the originals and I think they are either saying what justifies their purchase better or they have no notion whatsoever about what they are talking about.
I never dealt with a KO that felt close to an original much less improved on it and I never dealt with an original Takara Tomy (I''m talking about MP-32 forward) that felt like a KO.
Human beings lie, they lie a lot and they do it to not only to achieve a certain goal but mainly to hide the truth from themselves.
I believe that most ppl (notice I said most and not all) that trash on an original Takara Tomy are trying to justify why they aren't going to get one.

Absolutely. If they can knock at least 70 dollars off the Takara price with the same toon aesthetic, a clean transformation, and decent build quality, they are going to be the ultimate winners here (or should I say, we are going to be the winners). I have very high hopes for that figure, in fact, I've got all my chips on him! I personally feel like 3rd party is always going to make the best figures because there are so many different companies competing to design the same characters. Really looking forward to that release!

Seeing them together side by side I knew the takara was winning but that I was winning cause I like the make toys better. I feel like there were a couple times where you wanted to slam takara but backed away from that can of worms. I don't think it would've changed the out come. For me the make toys cockpit looks really good, has the waist swivel and isn't over engineered too be covered in seam lines. The seams on modern takara are my biggest problem, they look like they're made with Legos. The null rays, his most defining feature look bad because it transforms. For my eye I wish the maketoys head was lighter color, didn't have the forearm gap and had better hands. But I'm happy, just wish I could get the rest of the seekers from maketoys.

Depending how you count, theres 3 versions of Starscream realeased. 1 way of counting it is that MP-11 is just a retool of MP-03. In my humblest of opinions thats what Igear did with their Seekers, and i dont think they look even the slightest similar to what Takara counts to what they did with MP-11. So to to me theres 3 versions of Starscream, V1 V2 and the latest V3, a simple counting for a simple mind. But according to Takara theres V1, V1.5 and now V2. So knowing when its gonna count as a Version X.5 and when its its own digit, thats the real question. Only Takara knows for sure, im just a shmuck with some cash to spend
