Gunpei Yokoi was taken from us far too soon. His game development philosophy is still being used by Nintendo to this day: Lateral Thinking with withered technology. not everything has to be bleeding edge, sometimes you just need a stable game engine and a fun idea.

My grandmother used to work at a thrift shop and she never me a Donkey Kong Game and Watch as a kid. I played the heck out of that system, and it still reminds me of her. I played the emulated version and it brought back a ton of memories. She passed during covid and Donkey Kong Game and Watch is one of my treasured gifts from her.

I was there as a kid in 1982-83 for the handheld craze...it was exciting. Game and Watches came out all over the school at break time. First having a no-name (Tiger?) LCD game and then eventually getting a Donkey Kong Jr. Had a PacMan game watch (actual watch) in 1983. At the same time, going to the arcade on the weekend and playing Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, Galaga, Moon Patrol...

This channel is quickly becoming my favourite in youtube. Really handy tips, good reviews on consoles, and this video is just divine. I’ve heard of these game & watch devices but I grew up in East Europe where we had the soviet copies of these, but personally I’ve never had one of those either. I’ve never known that there were compilations of these or the romset which even has the picture of the original console while you’re playing, and without this channel, most probably I would have never come across these. I’m getting these and try them out asap, this is charming as heck.
    Thanks for the interesting topic!

I had (still have, in fact) Mario Cement Factory when I was a kid. I never understood, as a kid, what Mario was doing in a cement factory, but I remember spending a *lot* of time playing it on long car trips.

Same, I think even down to the game it was. Was that the one with different levels and levers?
I was too young to even know what a factory was or what I was supposed to be doing in the game.
I think i was so young I just sort of figured out what it was that made the game keep going, and kept doing that. But I had no idea what it was supposed to be or what I was supposed to be doing.

Makes me feel old that my first hand held wasn't lcd, it was Mechanical. Tomy created a series of mechanical hand helds in the late 70s.
1978 racing game Digital Derby was my first. You had to steer a car to avoid other cars on film that rolled down the screen.

The problem with the Tiger handhelds was they tried way too hard to make their games more complex
and modern in spite of using outdated technology which made them more convoluted.
Game&Watch worked because the games were simple and easy to get the hang of within a few seconds

I imagine a cool fridge with root beer in there, some consoles to try out. And of course he'd donate a lot of his income to families in need and stuff. Oof I have so many ideas for that little vision.

G&W are deeply rooted in my childhood memories.
The first time I saw the Gameboy, it first appeared like a step back to me: compares to a G&W the screen was dim and blurry, without colors and the device was far bulkier. That’s when I understand It was usine game cartridges allowing more diverse and complex gales that I understood how good it was.
But G&W are really a beautyful and fun piece of tech.

I grew up with G&W in the 80s. Discovered them when I was accompanying my dad to a bar where he used to occasionally drop by to have a drink on the way home. This is why we were living in Cairo at the time. They were chained to the bar. Perfect distraction for a child. I own 8 and most of them are boxed and in great condition. The real challenge is to get the score past 999. After that it just goes back to 0. I challenge myself to go past that on game A & B before I move on to the next game.
